Anyone had issues removing the nav bar? I've rooted with magisk and added the qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 to the build prop but the bar won't go

Yeah but we talk about to completely hide the softkeys and not only the "auto-hide" one mean when we swipe up there should be not show up the bar.

Aokp ROM has this feature implemented into their ROM.
It seems like it has gotten bigger.

Hopefully it shouldn't be too much different?
FNV also has it. I knocked mine all the way down to 0, and it's gone. I'm also using GMD gesture control instead for navigation purposes, getting the most out of my nexus 4's screen

I used to do this on the Galaxy Nexus but I used LMT launcher instead. How easy is it to use GMD? I only use it for launching my universal search app

flash the aokp rom. it lets you completely customize the nav bar. you can add buttons change buttons and edit things like height.
check it out here
What about the status bar on top. Is there a option or mod to hide it all the time til you swipe down or something. I know the hidebar app hides both the top bar and the bottom bar at all time. But you cannot swipe down or show only the status bar without showing the navbar. Anybody knows

Lots of options open up when you get the bought app. I built my gestures to make triangles and it works really well. They explain everything and make it pretty straightforward.

I use ADW Launcher EX and it allows you to do that in settings. I believe other 4.0+ launchers have it built in.

Just add this line in your build.prop file :
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
Done !

Make sure to have an alternative for navigation before you do though

Don't use the "expand desktop" option in power menu/LMT/PIE.

i use all in one gestures from Google Play and dont need navbar for most of the time...
and no root or build.prop edit needed to hide navbar just do as it has been said here (best to do on fresh system)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2453926
or you can use "Auto Hide Soft Keys" app.
I bring you a small mod that will add the signal cluster to your extended status bar.
Backup in Twrp and/or backup the original systemui.apk
Flash in recovery
No need to wipe just reboot system.

Could you tweak the main status bar to hide the NFC/Bluetooth/Location icons? Or know of an Xposed module or some way to do it?

I can look into it. Have you tried using g4 tweaksbox? I think it has an option to hide icons, don't remember though.

Tried it. Nothing in Xposed has the ability to do it. I just wanna hide them without having to turn them all off, hah.

Didn't hide anything but Bluetooth and that seemed to just turn it off :/
Is there anyway to make the navigation bar smaller ? Like the same size of a Nexus phone would be great.

Installed this and it's great and works perfectly rcale however I've noticed since I installed the percentage of the normal status bar is hidden... I settings the percentage bar is checked but doesn't show. If I deselect and reselect show percentage it shows but then disappears again when screen goes off then back on just an observation
Are there any non-root Substratum status bar icon mods out there? I can't seem to find anything that works with Oreo/non-root.
Not fully, some icons can't be themed in the status bar without a custom rom
