What does Nexus 7 hotspot do?

I have the WiFi only variant and under networking options in settings, I am given the option to tether. I tried it out, and it created a hotspot which I recognized with my phone.
What is the purpose of this? To share WiFi that other devices have access to already? Maybe as a network repeater?
Would really like to know the answer.
Thank you!

INNNNteresting... the Nexus 7 2012 has that feature removed on the 3G model - much to everyone's annoyance. I wonder if this means I'll be put back in on the 2013 model...

If the Wi-Fi only model has it, I don't see why not.
Still want to figure out the purpose of this though.
I have actually been looking for something that would allow me to tether from a wireless connection.
Not that I say that stealing WiFi is good, when I go to hotels, I can often spoof my mac address to gain connectivity to the network. Wondering if I can spoof address on my nexus, then tether to my laptop, even though this could just as easily be done on my laptop.

It extends the WiFi signal like a repeater

No. It doesn't.
I really don't know what purpose it would serve on a n7 WiFi. I use it in reverse, I will create a hotspot on my LTE phone so the n7 can piggyback on that when I don't have WiFi available.
you can use it to create a LAN and transfer files between devices...at very fast speeds...

I already use superbeam, which does a great job already. Not sure what other uses it could have.

LOL. This is turning into a 'what I would like for the hotspot function to do' thread

My hotspot worked this way two days ago but now when started then original wifi connection is lost by the nexus?
Any ideas what I may have changed?

It could be for remote wireless charging, via your Qi. A little known feature called Wi-Qi.
jk LOL

I have noticed this too. I remember it would maintain WiFi connection with tether enabled, now it doesn't. Not sure if its due to the JSS15Q update or that I recently flashed Bulletproof kernel.

Is WiFi really this bad?

Hey all. I'm temporarily using a galaxy nexus (man, I missed this device) but I've noticed some real flaky WiFi behavior. It constantly disconnects and reconnects. Not to mention the range ain't that great. Don't get me wrong--i know what a special device this is, I'm just wondering if b/c maybe its a few years old this is simply as good as it gets with the WiFi radio it has. I've been using the galaxy s4 for a bit but I just sold it and am waiting for the note 3. This nexus is my "back up" device.
Thanks.

WiFi isn't related to the radio. Its controlled by the kernel. And for the record my WiFi works fine.
PS- I am also looking forward to buying the note 3

I'm running paranoid android on 4.2.2. Can u recommend a good kernel for better WiFi performance? After a bit more testing yesterday I realize that the range is really the issue. If I'm close enough to my router I have no problems. But with my other phones I don't have this issue anywhere in my house. On this nexus tho, if I'm in my spare bedroom the WiFi goes in and out constantly.
Thanks again.

are you using 5ghz oder 2.4ghz wifi?
the range on 5ghz is really bad, but on 2.4ghz it has a average range compared to other phones.

I have it set to auto. Should I switch to 2.4?

give it a try, check if your router uses the 5ghz band.
my router is capable of 2.4 and 5ghz using the same ssid for both.
always had the problem that my phone connected to the 5ghz and lost connection to wifi through 2 walls.
after setting it to 2.4ghz only it got better.

Thanks man. I'll give it a shot. I'm also gonna try that fancy kernel. Any other good kernels you've tried?

big fan of stock image with stock kernel, especially since the 4.3 update.
i did not expierience a increase of wifi range with custom kernels, maybe a little bit more throughput.
but if you want to try a custom kernel its up to franco-kernel.

Go to your wifi settings and go to advanced. If avoid poor connections is checked then uncheck it

No release is bug free for me it fixed some anoying bugs like the data drops without bringing new ones.
And i have the impression it gave the gnex an other speed bump.

Oooh I'm telling, your trying to crack a WiFi network, bad, bad boy. Probably not or at least no method I have seen yet and I am constantly on the boards over at AirCrack. Your better off going with a Nexus tablet for that kind of thing, works flawlessly on my Nexus 10 and my buddies Nexus 7 v2. The LG G Pad is also a good tablet for such things, just make sure to get the Google Play Edition. If you have an old Samsung Galaxy S2 laying around they also make a really good phone for BCMON, use CM 10.1 or above on it and you won't have any problems.

[Q] Nexus 7 2013 battery life is really bad...

I have recently upgraded from the Nook HD to the Nexus 7 2013.
Everything is fine and good except for when I try to use it for a day. The battery life generally lasts for 6 hours, I have Android 4.4.3 KitKat, with root and CWM.
Do any of you have this problem?
I really dont want to go back to the Nook HD, its too SLOW.
Did you let your n7 get hot? Usually leaving a liion battery in the car on a summer day for even a short period of time will ruin it and reduce its life by about 40%

Depending on what you're doing, 6 hours on the stock kernel is about average.

Actually on experimental x I had 10 hours of battery... Even when over clocked to 1.7 GHz!

Why can't OnePlus get Android Auto working?

I'm being forced to use non-OOS based ROMs so I can use Android Auto without experiencing random and frustrating disconnects from my car.
Has anyone else had this issue, and if you solved it with OOS...how?

I've been using andriod auto without any issue on my op3 for the past 9 months. I'm using it on its own though not connected to a head unit. It's rock solid and rarely if ever hangs or freezes.

My mistake I should have mentioned I am connecting it to my car. I'm sure it works fine on the phone by itself.
