Might be bricked - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Ok first let me start off by saying that I'm an idiot and did something really stupid. I was rooted with an unlocked bootloader on Android 8.1 preview was trying to return to stock and stupidly I locked the bootloader before flashing a factory image. Now I'm stuck on the bootloader screen, if I try to boot it flashes the white screen with the Google logo for a split second then starts going into bootloops. When I tried fastboot oem unlock it says "remote oem unlock not allowed". Does anyone know if there is a way to recover my phone or did I make a very expensive mistake?

From what I know across all devices, a very expensive mistake. :/.
For future reference, yet again, for everyone. PLEASE READ. If you want to relock the bootloader, only do so after you actually boot into the new OS.

Reboot into recovery and factory wipe it. That is your only chance, and it's slim.

RMA

Sideload ota through your recovery.

lollipop OTA fail

Hi guys I got the lollipop OTA for my nexus ( completely stock), never tinkered with it and the OTA installed but now its stuck on "google" screen and constantly bootloops. I have done some reading and I tried to unlock bootloader via Wugfresh toolkit and normal fastboot oem method but no avail, it gets stuck on the "yes" option.
Basically I have a locked bootloader which fails to unlock, and nexus stuck in google logo, any guidance will be much appreciated. Plz point me towards the right direction. :crying:
Try to unlock the bootloader from adb with OEM unlock command. The steps are posted above the factory images on Google's dev site.
yeah I tried that and tablet gets stuck on the yes option at unlock bootloader screen and nothing happens for 20 minutes , i have to restart it. I've read around and it seems like my emmc might have corrupted. Any pointers?

Well I can only think of one thing. Buy a new nexus. There aren't any listings for the Wi-Fi version and the LTE on Swappa. However there is some other devices on Swappa.

Relock bootloader without wiping?

Is it possible to relock bootloader without wiping data? All my previous devices didn't require wipe, but I received such strange warning when tried to relock bootloader on Z2 Force Sprint

I believe you're not able to relock the bootloader until Motorola release a signed bootloader. I had the page once before I'll see if I can find it again and add an edit if I do.

Don't relock your bootloader unless you want a brick. Technically you can relock it, but everything has to be legit. You've already voided the warranty, relocking won't reinstate that, all that will happen is you'll be bricked with nothing to do about it because you've locked the bootloader.
Why do you want to relock it?
I would like to relock my bootloader and wondering the accuracy of this last post. Will relocking my Sprint Z2 Force bootloader brick my device?
I'm running completely stock via OTA 8.0.0 no root. The reason I want to relock my bootloader is bringing my phone to out of box status and pass SafetyNet. I don't want to root to get this done and I want to continue receiving OTA's.
I understand that my warranty is void when I unlocked bootloader originally and I understand relocking my bootloader will wipe data (factory reset).
Will this brick my phone?
Can I relock anymore?
What are the fastboot commands to relock the Z2?
Thanks!

I would suggest flashing one of the flash alls for sprint before doing it to ensure being fully stock. The command is below. Also i f you ever have any issues and want to reunlock, you always can with your original unlock code.
"fastboot oem lock"
You'll get a "are you sure" message. Type in the command again and poof, relocked status.

So, I did a "fastboot oem lock" and it re locked the bootloader. Restart bootloader, shows locked. Restart phone and still getting a splash screen similar to the one when your unlocked but this time it says "Device has loaded a different Operating System". Continues to boot normally into the system without issues. This was odd so I unlocked again did a Flashall w/ "XT1789-03_NASH_SPRINT_8.0.0_OCXS27.109-48-6_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip" and "fastboot oem lock". Both times said the lock was successful. But I'm still getting this boot splash screen with test reading "Device has loaded a different Operating System". System boots but still fails SafetyNet.
What gives? What am I missing?
From what I can muster up on XDA I can see that "you need a signed boot.img". Does this mean something and how can I find this?
Can anyone who has unlocked and then relocked their bootloader report on the behavior of your phone? Do you get the same "different OS" splash screen? Has anyone been successful at making it go away and passing safetynet?

I've been working on this all morning trying a couple different methods. But none have been successful. But the best I can figure, when in bootloader, there is a message stating that your system is "Modified". Somehow, that needs to get changed to what I can only speculate as "unmodified", or something alike.
I tried 3 different versions of returning to stock
First one I tired I cannot seemed to find now
Secondly, I tired:

Posted by Uzephi
I added the command "fastboot oem lock" 2 times just above the fastboot reboot command; thus locking bootloader.
But upon reboot, I still get the modified OS message.
Lastly, I tried this method
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76850077&postcount=6
I downloaded https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/nash/official/TMO/XT1789-04_NASH_TMO_C_8.0.0_OCX27.109-36_subsidy-TMO_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip
Followed the instructions (to some degree) and modified them for Linux since I am not a windows user.
After reboot, radio did not work. No WiFi, not data, nothing. Developer options was already enabled, but oem bootloader unlocking option was grayed out. Now I cannot unlock my bootloader and flash an updated OS.
Thanks for the reply! As of now I am stock latest Sprint 8.0.0 July update with bootloader locked. I get the "Your device has loaded a different Operating System" splash screen when I boot up with a "ID:" followed by nothing. I don't know what this "ID:" with nothing following this means. Also when I run a SafetyNet status app is says failed. But, everything else in the OS appears to be working. Google Play shows "Certified" status and all my apps that require SafetyNet is working (Banking apps, Netflix, Hulu, Google Pay, etc...). So I accomplished my mission in getting these apps working and everything else appears stock. The only thing that troubles me is this "Your device has loaded a different Operating System" splash screen and the failed status in the SafetyNet app. Would love to know how to fix this or an explanation on why.

That message appear because you've unlocked your bootloader before, I'm getting that message too and I can update my device via OTA. If you change that splash screen OTAs will fail.

Yeah, I was trying to find out if the phone could be reverted back to an out of back state. Another words, no splash screen saying "HEY! I HAVE BEEN MESSED WITH!" like you can on any other phone I have ever owned.
Thanks!
Yes you can

Yes you can , I already had this issue with my moto z2 force in Morocco , so what I did is I connected the phone to internet via bluetooth and when I added my google accounte the unlocking oem in dev option was normal , so I was able to flash roms again . Hope this will help you
I think there is no way to relock bootloader without wipe the device. Also you can relock the bootloader and you will not have any problems. I've already done it, at least with my sprint moto z2 force. the message there is no way to remove it, only flashing a logo.bin, "the boot splash" or replacing the logo.bin of the flash all package by the one of your preference.

So, which of the methods to re-lock did finally work? I was running on Android 8 before, OTA failes for at least 10 times, but suddenly it worked to upgrade to Android 9. Now I am weirdly not passing SafetyNet-check anymore (was working fine on Android 8, GooglePay etc).
Any recommendations? I just need the stupid GPay thing working

Hard bricked?

So long story short, my rom (nitrogenOS, great rom BTW) got corrupt (or so I thought) and I had to wipe all data to re-install it clean.
But now I'm in a position where my phone has no rom, no recovery (neither TWRP nor stock) and both my bootloader and bootloader critical are locked (Last time I had to lock and unlock them to prevent bootloop before flashing stock OS, I don't know why)
Now I can't boot into twrp or absolutely anything, and cannot unlock the bootloader either because it says "Flashing unlock is not allowed".
Is my device 100% unrecoverable?
Going to have to go back to JBHifi (Australia) and have them send it to google
Any thing I can still do to recover the device?!

you might be able to fastboot boot path/to/recovey.img like when you were flashing twrp but im not sure if that works on locked devices try it with a factory image with the recovery extracted and if that works you can sideload the full ota in recovery.
and possibly lgs flashtool can rewrite the phone with it locked but idk if there are imgs out there or if it works with pixel 2 xl
for next time never lock your phone on a custom rom really never relock once unlocked there is no need to and it only takes away your recovery options

How the heck did your bootloader get locked if you didn't do it yourself?? Do you get your phone ID displayed when you type in "fastboot devices" in bootloader mode???
You probably ended up switching slots when you reflashed. You need to use Deuces flashing script. Say yes to unlocking.
Try downloading and installing skipsoft tools. It might not see your device but try. If it doesn't see it, manually select your device. Have it install USB drivers. Restart skipsoft and see if it sees your device then. I got into a situation once where in fastboot it showed something like a corrupt bootloader and my computer could not see my device. After messing with the phone with skipsoft running, skipsoft could see it when my computer couldn't.

Bootloader LOCK..No Recovery..cant boot..HELP?!!

After tried to install stock rom on my pixel2 xl, i locked bootloader.
Now, i cant unlock bootloader because i cant boot and check oem unlock.
When try to boot into recovery, and boot to android, just appear message "can't find valid operating system"
What to do?
I tried unlock bootloader from adb, and get the message that is not allowed in lock state
Everything i can is boot in fastboot mode.
Is there any possibility to unlock bootloader without check OEM unlock, because i cant boot anything?
Please help.

Why did you lock the bootloader anyway?? If you can't get to the OS to check OEM unlocking and USB debugging....your hosed as far as unlocking the bootloader again. And since you have no recovery now, you can't side load an OTA to get your OS back. Might as well RMA it I'm afraid
Please people, read this and understand me clearly...
Unless you have a very very VERY good reason to relock the bootloader. DO NOT. The risk is too great for no reward.
This is the second or maybe the third post this week alone where someone may have hosed their phone doing just this...
I'm not here to hammer the OP but folks gotta understand.

OEM Locked, and Device is corrupt. Unfixable?

So, long story short I recently decided to try and root my oneplus7t I unfortunately made some mistakes and somehow corrupted some files. I read elsewhere in the forum that I could download the stock rom which I did and then use flash-all and that would allow me to go back to the factory settings so I could lock the oem and just go back to normal because I was tired of the headache. Unfortunately, after using flash-all I locked the oem thinking everything should be stock and it would work properly. But it says device is corrupt and trying to unlock the oem says oem unlocking is disabled.
So did I just completely brick my phone? I don't know of anyway to fix it at this point :/.

Can you still boot into bootloader via the hardware keys, whatever that combo is on the 7t?
Boot to bootloader or recovery and factory reset it or so.

Try
fastboot erase userdata and
Fastboot erase cache
Let me know if that works or not we will move on. Probably won't work since it's bootloader locked
You may have to contact OP and while you're at it, get the MSM tool for us all :good:
It says erase is not allowed in locked state . I think this is probably all she wrote for this one. I think I'm just going to send it back tbh, the whole reason I was trying to root it was because it didn't work with Sprint like they said it would. and I was wondering if I could find a way too make it work with custom software. Thanks for trying

I unfortunately no longer have Twrp installed as I did a flash-all with a stock rom already . If I try and flash recovery it says "flashing is not alllowed in lock state". Sideloading wasn't functional back when I had twrp either as the functionality for it is still in progress. I'll probably try contacting support one more time and see if I can get a T2 who can unbrick it, otherwise I'm just going to send it back. Thanks for the attempts guys!
Edit: As to the flashboot roms I flash-all'ed one of them and that's how I got into this mess :/.

I ended up needing to flash the fastboot 10.0.3 firmware and was able to do a local upgrade to 10.0.4 that way, then flashing a patched boot.img via fastboot
I can't run any flash commands as my oem is locked. I don't suppose there's anyway around that?

How did you flash twrp with it oem locked??That doesnt make sense
I had twrp on it when the oem was unlocked, I was trying to reset the device to stock, so I did a flash-all and then oem locked it. But for some reason the repair was unsuccessful, and now it says my device is corrupted and I forgot to turn on oem unlocking in the settings on my phone after the flash-all before I did the oem-lock.

Looks like you will need the MSM tool to fix this issue. You'll have to contact OP support and they will remote in your PC, load their software and flash it 100pct back to stock.
Also, disconnect them before they can delete the MSM tool so we can have it here in the community

Press volume up/down and power, reboot to fastboot. Unlock bootloader again. Install update from settings, reboot and install it again. (local install)
Factory reset in setting, reboot fastboot, lock bootloader. Reboot and untick unlock bootloader in developer settings.
Don't know if it's too late but I believe there's a working MSM tool now
