Gps issues - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Ok so this started today, gps is constantly losing lock, then gaining it back. Happening in Google maps, Waze and Pokemon go. I booted up gps status, and it's constantly going from double digit satellite lock to 0, then jumping back to double again. Phone wasn't dropped or anything. Is this thing defective now?

No. But I recently found out that if I turn off high accuracy and instead use device only mode, it works a lot more consistently. Received my RMA Pixel today, will report back if anything changed.

Any luck? im having issues myself.

I don't typically use GPS for long periods of time. Mostly just in an app that's trying to get my location once instead of continually following my location like navigation does and in those cases I have not had any issues.
In the cause of actual navigation, in the 5 weeks I've had my Pixel 2 XL I've used navigation maybe a total of 2 hours. It's not a very big sample size but so far I haven't had any loss of satellite lock.

Try the following:
- Close all apps that use location.
- Go to Location settings, switch to 'device only'.
- Then turn off location/GPS completely.
- After that, open Google Maps. It will ask you to turn on location services. Click OK on both dialog boxes.
Following this procedure I could resolve my problems with GPS on 4 different Android phones.

So looks like I'm not the only one with this problem. I also realized that turning off high accuracy fixes the issue. However, I strongly believe that with high accuracy, it makes use of cell tower information for faster location lock.. and if your cell reception is not good, it screws up the device-only GPS signal as well.
The reason why I say this is because when I was on vacation for the past week, I drove long distances and was on roaming (drove across Malaysia to Thailand), thus having poor reception. That is when I had GPS issues. In Singapore where I reside, the cell reception is much better and I do not have such issues.
Now setting the GPS setting to device-only isn't a permanent solution. Apps like FB needs it to know where you are.
I think Google needs to fix this. Has anyone logged this yet?

Unfortunately not

Any update on this? I'm having the exactly same issue. Pixel 2 XL.

I finally resolved this issue by changing my carrier. Any other attempt to solve this failed in the long run.
I realized my carrier or sim-card was the culprit when I once enabled airplane mode while navigating - suddenly I got an instant GPS lock that stayed.

Changing carrier sounds a bit extreme but wouldn't everyone on that carrier have that issue? Which carrier was it?

Yes I know, maybe it was my sim-card which I have had for years. It does not make much sense to me anyways. It was "Drei"/"3", a carrier in Austria.
I really tried lots of settings and combinations of settings and at some point I figured out the following:
When I still had that carrier, GPS worked flawlessly only when I
- enabled flight mode OR
- when turning off mobile data OR
- when set to '2G only' mobile data.
So maybe if you have that issue you can try these settings to check if it's similar to my issue.
Ever since I changed carrier (and sim-card ofc), my GPS problems went away.

GPS Problem

Hi guys,
Trying to figure out if this is just me that has this issue. New nexus as of yesterday on o2. I do have the volume issue for what its worth, but I am getting off topic.
I have been having a problem with the GPS. I have tried it indoors and out. I have restarted the app, cleared cache, re-ticked all the location boxes, and nothing seems to help my get a lock. The closest it comes is about 4700 metres. This is with WiFi turned on as well as an active Sim card in it. My old iPhone without a sim instantly drops the pin on my house. So I guess I am trying to see if others have the issue, and if there is a fix or I have to send it back.
For the record I am pretty new to Android....as in this is my first one, so go gently! Other than this issue I love the phone!
Cheers,
J

That definitely does not seem normal. See if you can replicate the problem in a less built-up area. But at the moment, if I were having the same problem (which I'm not, I get great GPS reception) I would take it back for a replacement.
Hope you get it all sorted.

Well I live in the country side, so that hopefully is not the issue. I turned wifi off and it made zero difference, so it looks like something with the GPS.......
I just tried the GPS app in the market called GPS Test
It says that GPS is on, but it can't find me. Bad sign.
I tried the GPS test app from the market too the other day and it didn't locate any satellites. I think it's a problem with that app itself. No need to panic yet.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I've been suffering from the same problem. I'm used to the GPS icon on the SGS2 showing me a (blinking) dot in the GPS icon. But now nothing.
GPS test app also shows it's on. I'm going to try the GPS out a bit more, but have the feeling somethings up with the GPS.
Using the Wi-fi it's working 'fine'. But I don't feel like sharing info while using this feature.
The captivate had a very similar problem when it came out. Not sure if it ever got fixed. But ultimately that's why I turned my captivate back in.
If you are in the country with no wifi around then I wouldnt expect wifi location to do you any good. Still though, it should locate much better than what it is. I'm in Afghanistan, in the middle of no where and mine locks while only using GPS to within like 30 meters.
original SGS line of phones were famous for their "awesome GPS"
no, it never got fixed because it was a hardware issue...
I'm having the same problem. I'm constantly unable to find my location using GPS. Wi-Fi and mobile networks work but this surely needs to be fixed.
GPS seemed to work after my little trip outside. Sadly as soon as I got back in, nothing. I'll be able to do some 'proper field testing' tomorrow.

GPS normally does not work well indoors.
I know but because I managed to get a location with the GPS on the SGS2, even if it took a while.
I was hoping for similar results (or better) with the GN.
GPS on my GN isn't working at all. Unless Wi-Fi and mobile network location is ticked, the phone can't find my location with GPS. Argh.
Have you tried any GPS apps to see if it's just bad reception from the satellites? That's one way to find out what's going on with the GPS on the phone.
My GPS locks almost instantly, and this is without a SIM card, and in Manhattan with tall buildings blocking most of the satellites. Much faster than with my N1.
no problems here.fastest phone ever with gps and i got 10 phones around 3 years with the function.
sitting in my room on the couch in the second floor.WiFi of only 2G network
and got within 5 to 7 sec a gps fix about 10 meters.
I reapeat,... in my house!not on the street or on the window!
sitting in front of my tv
never got a phone who can give me a signal in my house
my GPS also seems to work fine but during tracking it always goes off lock and relocks
and it bounces on corners like a gummybear

GPS Issues

Sounds like I am not the only one having GPS issues with my HAM. I have tried pretty much everything to improve things but with little or no success. Just to be clear I am talking about GPS locking and accuracy not AGPS (mobile tower) or WIFI based location which seem to work fine.
Hopefully this thread will get noticed by HUAWEI and they will fix the problem which in my case is :
Inconsistent GPS locking, sometimes it locks on pretty quick < 1min other times the GPS icon in the notification bar just keep flashing.
Inaccurate GPS location when it does lock with the position jumping around.
Location and heading changes when stationary which are probably related. Looks like internal compass maybe buggy or is not getting used.
I very dependent on GoogleMap and its Navigator which is where the above issues have been identified. I tried Waze which seems to dampen the location and direction jumping a bit but the initial lock was still a problem.
Same issues in B906 and B907 roms, haven't tried B221 (trying it next but it looks like others experienced the same with this rom)
Tried:
GPS Status and Toolbox - no difference
GPS Fix - no difference
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1563226 - Used Method 2 and with SSL as suggested by member svvv - Improved AGPS and WIFI based location lock but didn't help with the GPS
Never had this problem with any of my previous 4 Androids and even my old Windows Phone worked flawlessly. Maybe its something to do with my HAM being a Chinese model and it also having GLONASS which has better coverage in the northern hemisphere. Will see if I can set it to just use just the US GPS system in the build.prop.
Its a shame that Huawei stuffed the GPS on the HAM, it would be my perfect phone otherwise, if I can't get it going reliably it will be the Galaxy Mega for me as much as I hate Touch Wiz......
Location Access enabled with both and wireless networks enabled.
Google account Location settings enabled.
2GB no NFC International Model, rooted.

If ur AGPS is working fine eventually ur GPS should work fine. AGPS will use network to locate the GPS satellites.
try changing AGPS settings in the Ascend Mate secret menu *#*#2846579159#*#* under backgroundsetting
Thanks Svvv, will see what options come up. GPS usually eventually locks but it's never that accurate. Will A GPS improve this?

AGPS wont be that accurate as GPS...but whenever mobile cant fix a position with GPS satellites it goes for AGPS until GPS becomes active. U will not see any difference in the navigation.
Also try using GPS in the open skies mostly u wont get a fix inside a house or closed areas.
Thanks Svvv, that's what I found. Still can't believe Huawei couldn't get this right, even my wife's $50 ZTE's gps works like a dream. Searching through the P6 forums shows similar problems, not surprising given the similar hardware. I'm starting too suspect it's a hardware problem, maybe antenna related so I'm not confident of a software fix. Spent far top much time on this and I need accurate navigation so it's so long HAM. It's a shame, great phone otherwise, going too miss the battery life.....

GPS update. Tried B221 for a week but GPS issues were the same, positional accuracy was seemed slightly worse.
Rom was more stable than b907 though, no random reboots or system freezes bit b907 has better functionality. Very jealous of my wife's nexus 5, can't tell you how good the hardware and software is. A absolute bargain!
Can't go back to a small screen though, fingers crossed we see a nexus 6 to bridge the gap

since i dont quiet use gps in phones (i'm using other gps only gadget) i'm sure there must be something missing in the HAM that prevent it having good GPS signal/system.
well, if you ever wanted to replace the HAM, still wanted the same Batt Power, big 6.1", why not go for the HAM 2 which is LTE version with many improvements over the first HAM, heard that they improve GPS too.
It is the same problem with Huwaei MT 7 - I can not believe the this company did not discover this issue in their product yet, this is what is bad about the Chinese products
Strange, all of a sudden Yesterday, it seems all the people I know with Huawei phones have no GPS (Mate 2 and P8 Lite). I checked 6 phones. Worked fine Sunday, then BOOM Yesterday (Monday) no GPS no matter what I do. Any one else having this issue? I am on Android 5.1 B322.

Wow so im not the only one that's weird I just did the upgrade to b322 Saturday so I though something screwed up there. have you seen any devs come up with a cause or solution?
I had the same experience with my ascend mate 2. Mt2lo3. GPS is laggy to an extreme. Maybe the Chinese GPS Data connection. web.omwtoday.com???

Are GPS problems common on this phone?

I just switched our family over from Verizon a couple days ago. I got a Note 3 because I had one on Verizon and it works flawlessly. The GPS was wonky and took forever to lock, and after troubleshooting I exchanged it. The replacement is even worse. Loses signal for no reason etc etc. Is this a common thing? My Verizon one was flawless and T-Mobile seems gun shy to replace it a second time.
I have had uneven GPS service on Tmobile when it can to Samsung phones. Had the vibrant (worse GPS ever), S2 a little better, nexus (had to change GPS config files. Note 3 seems better in California, but I was getting bad GPS in Seattle maybe because it was lightly raining for 3 days.
Never had that issue
TWEAKED 1.0 NOTE 3
I have noticed very slow GPS locking on my note 3.
My girlfriends t-mobile s4 will lock much faster while driving. I honestly end up most of the times pulling her phone out and using maps if I am trying to find something quick and need a gps lock.
i got no problem here in nj with my note 3
Mine works great here but I'm using will03's build right now. It seems as though the stock software doesn't turn GPS on all the way.

I definitely would say it needs to be on your end. Did you set the GPS location to North America? What rom are you running?any map apps?
TWEAKED 1.0 NOTE 3
Something isn't right, mine is working perfect, maybe some settings. Under location services, there is setting to use wireless networks, I'm not sure if this affects the GPS settings, but GPS absolutely needs network assist to get rough location for faster lock. Also first lock will take longer to download all the sat. data and if you have GPS off and travel some longer distance, again will take longer as all sats are out of position. Metal casing could affect GPS reception and some particular locations have heavy interference, for example there was one place in DC I could not get lock, either on purpose for security reason or due to some heavy side band radiation. Right now I'm inside a house with aluminum siding, zero GPS signal and it still shows perfect location to within 10-15ft, (sat view shows me at my house door exactly, probably last time it got good lock). I do have my GPS on at all time.

Since the phone is new it is running stock. I haven't even attempted rooting or any of that because I dont want to trip knox and then have them not take it back. This is the third Note 3. I even went to a second retail location to get the 3rd one. I really don't understand it. I am using the same case that I was on my Verizon phone, which is just TPU, so no metal. I can go outside with no obstruction and still at most only get a lock on 1 satellite. I have never experienced anything like this, 3 phones in a row with a hardware problem is hard to believe. I have tried Waze, Google Maps, all the gps status apps and what not, tried recalibrating compass, resetting gps cache, you name it. It is garbage. I am speechless and don't know what to do. The store will never believe I have had 3 bad Note 3's.
Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I don't have any of these issues that should be getting in the way. At most I can only get a lock on 1 sat with no obstructions outdoors. Case is TPU, and have tried it without case. Running stock everything. Have factory reset many times.

GPS problems

Why is it that Wi-Fi is so tied to GPS. Ever since I launch day, GPS has sucked. But I notice even if I have no Wi-Fi to connect to or even saved at all, just turning on Wi-Fi than turning it off makes GPS work correct. Is there another solution?
I was having problems with GPS signal and call Sprint customer Service and they walk me to some trouble shooting steps with no luck. Messing around with my Note4 I notice that the Network mode was set to LTE/CDMA and I changed it to Automatic. The phone reboot to apply the change and GPS is working great even with Wi-Fi turn off. Hope this Help

Thanks, but I have it a try user now and it didn't help any. Still the only thing the makes it lock on is Wi-Fi.
My gps is horrid. Can't ever get a lock indoors. (I used to be able to get dead accurate locks with my S3 in malls.) When I'm outside I keep doing this floating thing. It makes GPS maps a pain as I keep flying off the road. I also use my phone to play Ingress which is a location based CTF game. It's so unstable I'm pretty much not able to play anymore.
I'm really hoping someone is able to come out with a heavily updated mod that will help with it.
My GPS is awesome! I've owned many HTC phones, and the Note 2 an 3. The Note 4 has the best GPS on any phone I've owned.

I play Ingress too, I hope you're Resistance! I'm level 12 with enough AP for level 14 but need 1 more Gold, so I'll skip level 13 when I get that Gold. I already have 2 Onyx/black Badges and 3 Platinum, so I just need 1 more Platinum for level 16.
Anyway, Ingress is better on my Note 4 than my Note 3, Evo LTE, and 2013 Nexus 7. I suspect an issue with your GPS
SwiftKey'ed from my Note 4 using XDA Premium HD
I've also noticed unreliable GPS, I'm using stock rooted NK2, no xposed or any other mods. I've found often I cant get a lock at all until I reboot the phone. Hoping this is a fixable software issue.

problem with GPS Offline

Hi all, I'm experiencing a lot of issues with my brand new phone using offline navigation.
It simply doesn't find any GPS signal. I tried 2 different apps for offline nav: Navmii and Here.
Using google maps under 4g signal it works but when I change country I use one of the 2 apps mentioned above (so that I don't pay roaming) and simply it doesn't find any satellite to connect.
Do you think it's an hardware problem?
I've also tried the application "GPS Test" and it's always on "NO FIX" status.
Usually my zone has a very good signal and I never had a problem with other GPS nav or smartphones, during 3 hours travel last week on an autoroute in north italy I never had signal.

I did 2 more tries few minutes ago using google maps offline (I set up the current location where I am now yesterday evening), and gmaps is able to locate me.
Why Here and Navmii are not able to use it? I've downloaded all the necessary maps on both the apps.
thanks a lot for your reply!

The strange thing is that even with "GPS test" application I was not able to get a stable signal...
I am running CM 12.1 on a Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, and also can't get Navmii to see the GPS info. GPSstatus, gmap, osmand, and some nautical apps all work fine. I found that Navmii has had this problem before, about a year ago, so that is where to become suspicious. Lollipop 5.0 and then 5.1 broke a lot of things with their changes so this is not too surprising - just disappointing.

I solved it 2 days ago. Problem was my metal cover which was causing a shield around the device. All other functions were working fine but the GPS.
Thank you anyway (do not purchase metal cases)
I have an M9 phone, exactly the same problem.
only he does not have a case.
