GPS Issues - Huawei Ascend P6, Mate

Sounds like I am not the only one having GPS issues with my HAM. I have tried pretty much everything to improve things but with little or no success. Just to be clear I am talking about GPS locking and accuracy not AGPS (mobile tower) or WIFI based location which seem to work fine.
Hopefully this thread will get noticed by HUAWEI and they will fix the problem which in my case is :
Inconsistent GPS locking, sometimes it locks on pretty quick < 1min other times the GPS icon in the notification bar just keep flashing.
Inaccurate GPS location when it does lock with the position jumping around.
Location and heading changes when stationary which are probably related. Looks like internal compass maybe buggy or is not getting used.
I very dependent on GoogleMap and its Navigator which is where the above issues have been identified. I tried Waze which seems to dampen the location and direction jumping a bit but the initial lock was still a problem.
Same issues in B906 and B907 roms, haven't tried B221 (trying it next but it looks like others experienced the same with this rom)
Tried:
GPS Status and Toolbox - no difference
GPS Fix - no difference
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1563226 - Used Method 2 and with SSL as suggested by member svvv - Improved AGPS and WIFI based location lock but didn't help with the GPS
Never had this problem with any of my previous 4 Androids and even my old Windows Phone worked flawlessly. Maybe its something to do with my HAM being a Chinese model and it also having GLONASS which has better coverage in the northern hemisphere. Will see if I can set it to just use just the US GPS system in the build.prop.
Its a shame that Huawei stuffed the GPS on the HAM, it would be my perfect phone otherwise, if I can't get it going reliably it will be the Galaxy Mega for me as much as I hate Touch Wiz......
Location Access enabled with both and wireless networks enabled.
Google account Location settings enabled.
2GB no NFC International Model, rooted.

If ur AGPS is working fine eventually ur GPS should work fine. AGPS will use network to locate the GPS satellites.
try changing AGPS settings in the Ascend Mate secret menu *#*#2846579159#*#* under backgroundsetting

Thanks Svvv, will see what options come up. GPS usually eventually locks but it's never that accurate. Will A GPS improve this?

AGPS wont be that accurate as GPS...but whenever mobile cant fix a position with GPS satellites it goes for AGPS until GPS becomes active. U will not see any difference in the navigation.
Also try using GPS in the open skies mostly u wont get a fix inside a house or closed areas.

Thanks Svvv, that's what I found. Still can't believe Huawei couldn't get this right, even my wife's $50 ZTE's gps works like a dream. Searching through the P6 forums shows similar problems, not surprising given the similar hardware. I'm starting too suspect it's a hardware problem, maybe antenna related so I'm not confident of a software fix. Spent far top much time on this and I need accurate navigation so it's so long HAM. It's a shame, great phone otherwise, going too miss the battery life.....

GPS update. Tried B221 for a week but GPS issues were the same, positional accuracy was seemed slightly worse.
Rom was more stable than b907 though, no random reboots or system freezes bit b907 has better functionality. Very jealous of my wife's nexus 5, can't tell you how good the hardware and software is. A absolute bargain!
Can't go back to a small screen though, fingers crossed we see a nexus 6 to bridge the gap

since i dont quiet use gps in phones (i'm using other gps only gadget) i'm sure there must be something missing in the HAM that prevent it having good GPS signal/system.
well, if you ever wanted to replace the HAM, still wanted the same Batt Power, big 6.1", why not go for the HAM 2 which is LTE version with many improvements over the first HAM, heard that they improve GPS too.

It is the same problem with Huwaei MT 7 - I can not believe the this company did not discover this issue in their product yet, this is what is bad about the Chinese products

Strange, all of a sudden Yesterday, it seems all the people I know with Huawei phones have no GPS (Mate 2 and P8 Lite). I checked 6 phones. Worked fine Sunday, then BOOM Yesterday (Monday) no GPS no matter what I do. Any one else having this issue? I am on Android 5.1 B322.

Wow so im not the only one that's weird I just did the upgrade to b322 Saturday so I though something screwed up there. have you seen any devs come up with a cause or solution?

I had the same experience with my ascend mate 2. Mt2lo3. GPS is laggy to an extreme. Maybe the Chinese GPS Data connection. web.omwtoday.com???

GPS stopped working... any idea before i'll send it for RMA?

Hi all
Few days ago i realized that GPS on my Defy is not working anymore...
It cannot get fix in any location, and GPS status tells me that is actually sees few satellites - 3-7 but readings are not stable (they dissapear from time to time) and it can not get fix...
I am on Froyo - official.
Any ideas?
I just tried it out again - it got fix, but after 130 seconds..... ...normally on a cold start it used to get a fix in below 30 seconds....
Same issue here, stopped working Thu 21st or Fri 22nd. Couldn't get any fix. Restored to factory with no success. On Sun it was working, after a few days it got better, but sometimes the startup time is long, the signal fluctuates and the accuracy (with GPStest) jumps between 4.5m and 45 or even 98m)
Also the GPS indicator sometimes doesn't show up on the status bar while gps is working.
Official Froyo here as well.
Must be some conspiracy
Maybe to get us buy Defy+
Same problem, GPS was working until last week... On Motorola forum there are some other people, which GPS stopped working this month, what's going on? By "stopped working" I mean, that I can not get GPS fix ie. with data connection off or I need to wait 30 minutes until I get GPS fix. For those 30 minutes I see 10 satellites, but no fix. Before month I had GPS fix w/wout data in 30 seconds.
Also been reading about this on the Motor forums. I have not been having the issue (California). Bought mine in November US when they first became available. Official 2.2, T-Mo. Green lens, FWIW.
Same problem here. Bought it in January but around June it stopped being able to hold a lock on any satellites. It can see 10 satellites very easily, and it will lock for a few seconds, but then it drops all of the sats and starts over.
It stopped working on official Froyo, but no joy on CM7 either.
There are a number of article on the net about GPS jamming. In the US Homeland Security routinely cuts GPS and if you are a pilot you will receive an advisory. But there is this:
http://www.economist.com/node/18304246
May not be related. Also, on another pilot forum, they are blaming certain types of GPS antenna for being jammed by cell towers.
I have the same issue. It worked ok for me yesterday while driving a long distance, but lost GPS after about an hour.
I can sometimes get a good enough fix to check in on foursquare, but not often.
I'm on official tmobile us froyo and have done factory reset, but it didn't help any.

A link on a pilot forum tested (not sure if it was a phone or other device) a GPS drop-out the pilot was having consistently on the way to his airfield. He finally noticed that when he drove between two cell towers his GPS dropped signal. He retested this several times and with the same result.
John Deere is fighting a 40,000 cell tower development which would disrupt GPS on farm tractors which rely on GPS for movement. This is a Sprint deal with LightSquared.
Look around this site for more GPS woes: http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/GPS_Side_Issue_LightSquared_Broadband_204980-1.html
My gps actually worked today! Figured I'd try it going from hotel to water ski show, took about 2 minutes to get a gps signal. But once it did, it worked well and got us to our destination.
Nothing has changed with phone setup, so it's a bit inconsistent it would seem.
Will be trying it again in a few hours. Wish me luck.

Mine (UK stock Froyo 2.2) was the same, with A-GPS and data and WiFi all switched off it was struggling to get a fix, intermittently.
All GPS Status/Monitor apps showed that it finds many satellites but no locking.
Yesterday I got this app GPSFix from the Android Market and it locked in 1 min. After that all apps and monitors lock without any problem. I need to try more to be sure it was due to the app...
That's interesting Aeron_11. I'm gonna give GPSFix a try. Here's the market link if anyone is interested in trying it:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.androidlab.gpsfix
The reviews seem to be very good.
GPSFix doesn't do any good for me. It's the same old story. Sees lots of satellites but can't hold a lock on any of them for more than a couple of seconds.
Running CM7
Well, I did some more tests, and I think GPSFix wasn't quite as reliable as I originally thought !
Basically it is still very intermittent. Sometimes it takes 5min or more and sometimes 1min. I think it depends on many parameters:
- I would say weather is a factor, cloudy, windy etc.
- Standing next to a wall or a building - even if not tall it blocks the direct view
- Also I find if you are moving, it will be a lot harder. Stand completely still and not just stop walking but don't move the phone about too much !
- The latest I found is the direction you are holding the phone (and possibly angle) !? Experiment and you see it picks more satellites in certain angles !
All in all, I get a fix but it just takes a long time sometime. A good GPS antenna/hardware in a phone probably is much more reliable than this (my records is 9min, which to be honest puts it pass the practical use). Although this is with all the data and WiFi and other connections switched off.
The funny thing is once it locks it won't let go !? It keeps it locked and won't drop it - accuracy is so so.
By the way, the number of satellites found is not important, it's the strength of their signal (I think it might be called SNR - some monitors show the strength and you can see that until it finds 3 or 4 satellites with 25+ SNR it won't lock.)
I'm no expert, these are just my impression/experience, that's all....

GPS Problem

Hi guys,
Trying to figure out if this is just me that has this issue. New nexus as of yesterday on o2. I do have the volume issue for what its worth, but I am getting off topic.
I have been having a problem with the GPS. I have tried it indoors and out. I have restarted the app, cleared cache, re-ticked all the location boxes, and nothing seems to help my get a lock. The closest it comes is about 4700 metres. This is with WiFi turned on as well as an active Sim card in it. My old iPhone without a sim instantly drops the pin on my house. So I guess I am trying to see if others have the issue, and if there is a fix or I have to send it back.
For the record I am pretty new to Android....as in this is my first one, so go gently! Other than this issue I love the phone!
Cheers,
J

That definitely does not seem normal. See if you can replicate the problem in a less built-up area. But at the moment, if I were having the same problem (which I'm not, I get great GPS reception) I would take it back for a replacement.
Hope you get it all sorted.

Well I live in the country side, so that hopefully is not the issue. I turned wifi off and it made zero difference, so it looks like something with the GPS.......
I just tried the GPS app in the market called GPS Test
It says that GPS is on, but it can't find me. Bad sign.
I tried the GPS test app from the market too the other day and it didn't locate any satellites. I think it's a problem with that app itself. No need to panic yet.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I've been suffering from the same problem. I'm used to the GPS icon on the SGS2 showing me a (blinking) dot in the GPS icon. But now nothing.
GPS test app also shows it's on. I'm going to try the GPS out a bit more, but have the feeling somethings up with the GPS.
Using the Wi-fi it's working 'fine'. But I don't feel like sharing info while using this feature.
The captivate had a very similar problem when it came out. Not sure if it ever got fixed. But ultimately that's why I turned my captivate back in.
If you are in the country with no wifi around then I wouldnt expect wifi location to do you any good. Still though, it should locate much better than what it is. I'm in Afghanistan, in the middle of no where and mine locks while only using GPS to within like 30 meters.
original SGS line of phones were famous for their "awesome GPS"
no, it never got fixed because it was a hardware issue...
I'm having the same problem. I'm constantly unable to find my location using GPS. Wi-Fi and mobile networks work but this surely needs to be fixed.
GPS seemed to work after my little trip outside. Sadly as soon as I got back in, nothing. I'll be able to do some 'proper field testing' tomorrow.

GPS normally does not work well indoors.
I know but because I managed to get a location with the GPS on the SGS2, even if it took a while.
I was hoping for similar results (or better) with the GN.
GPS on my GN isn't working at all. Unless Wi-Fi and mobile network location is ticked, the phone can't find my location with GPS. Argh.
Have you tried any GPS apps to see if it's just bad reception from the satellites? That's one way to find out what's going on with the GPS on the phone.
My GPS locks almost instantly, and this is without a SIM card, and in Manhattan with tall buildings blocking most of the satellites. Much faster than with my N1.
no problems here.fastest phone ever with gps and i got 10 phones around 3 years with the function.
sitting in my room on the couch in the second floor.WiFi of only 2G network
and got within 5 to 7 sec a gps fix about 10 meters.
I reapeat,... in my house!not on the street or on the window!
sitting in front of my tv
never got a phone who can give me a signal in my house
my GPS also seems to work fine but during tracking it always goes off lock and relocks
and it bounces on corners like a gummybear

GPS Issue on ColorOS V2.0.6i Beta

Anybody tested GPS performance on the latest build 2.0.6i beta)??
Well, gps performance regarding accuracy and TTFF ( Time to first fix) got indeed worse regarding find7 latest KK bases.
My good and old Galaxy Note 2 got better signal accuracy and faster fixes even if it's viewing less satellites then the Find 7.
It could be software related
Perhaps some of you could run some tests using GPS Status app or alike ( run tests always outdoors)
That's the only issue I am having so far with the stock 2.0.6i beta rooted and with unified storage.

I remember when I got the Find 7 a couple of months ago, still on JB, GPS performance was great
I am talking about offline gps apps like Sygic and coPilot or GPS tools like GPS Status...
Google Maps I never use ...
I did unify storage, but I don't think it's related.
Anyone?
.
Have you tried using fastergps to switch your ntp server
I always adjust the gps.conf file and stuff.
But the gps chipset on this device always performed well without the need of a-gps.
I re-installed the firmware fresh, with all wipes, which improved things and now gps is usable again, even on Sygic which requires strong gps signals but performance is not as good at it was on JB for instance.
Perhaps implementation is not as good, I will research further

GPS Issues on N based roms, please help

Since I installed the first N OOS build i have issues withmy GPS,
every few seconds it lost the lock and needed a few seconds to reacquire it.
Also sometimes it does not acquire ay lock at all and need a reboot to work again.
As far as I can tell the issue happens with every android N based OxygenOS.
And also with Lineage OS 14.1
I tryed clean flashing booth and it did not change anything.
Now I flashed back to the last MM based community build and it works no lost of GPS signal, reasomably quick fix.
Does any other users also have GPS issues with N based roms on the OP3?
How can I solve the issue or at least find out whaty causing the issues?
Funny you mention this. I use my op3 for my topo maps when I hike and I have found N based roms to cause the gps to require a relocking. Also, the gps is noticeably less accurate.
Anyone got an explanation/solution?
good to herar that I'm not the only one with GPS issues.
Now the question is how to fix those?
I am also facing GPS issues since Oxygen OS 4.x.x, before that I never experienced any.
Sometimes it take 5 to 10 minutes until it finally fetches a GPS Signal but it is still very inaccurate then.
Hopefully the new OOS 4.0.3 update helps, but I doubt it since there is no mention of GPS in the release notes.
I also have this issue, the only resolution I had is to switch on WiFi scanning. After turning it on GPS has been a bit better and locks to the correct location quickly.
Sent from my OnePlus3 using XDA Labs
Ok I found out something new when I set mobile data to 2G GPS works great also on the 4.0.3 OOS ROM.
And since people complained since the start that some have issues with GPS and 4G I guess the issue really is that if some particular frequencies are used GPS suffers. Apparently something changes in N ROMs that makes the issues appear for more users.
Interestingly is that flashing Modem Firmware has no affect so the issue is in a part that is in the android kernel itself.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/help/gps-issues-t3416544
Every time I turn location on, I get the "improve location accuracy?" prompt. Every single time.
How can I stop this? Never had this before, usually goes away after one enable.
Another strange thing sometimes the GPS cant get a lock and the only way to fix it is to restart the phone.
the bew Open Beta 12 based on Android 7.1.1 seams to have resolved my GPS issue really strange
Hi - I also do have heavy problems with losses of GPS- signal at the OP3 since months. Especially while using LTE the GPS gets often lost. Since 5 weeks I am working/struggeling with the OP-support a lot - but no changes till now. @David: "Open Beta 12" has solved your problems?? what is this concrete?
i do have the problem...... from 4.0.2 updated to 4.1.1 and now Beta13, the problem still there~!!
On my phone gps signal gets lost always at the same location and when lte is active. On any other location gps works perfect. When i disable lte everything works perfect. This has happend on any rom. I think this is a hardware problem and can not be resolved. The only solution is disabling lte or using a different provider. I am using o2 in Germany, the problem does not happen with other Providers. Different Providers have different frequencies, this might be the difference between o2 and the other providers.
I do have O2-LTE too and it is "under suspicion" in Germany. But in February I was for 4 weeks in Florida and travelled a lot using navigation. The provider was AT&T - and I had very often losses of GPS-signal too.
I can confirm, that the problem happens with different ROM, but not at only one location - it happens everywhere.
But what can we do? OnePlus is working at this problem since months without a solution - and the customer with this bug really have to accept it "for zero"??
Hello @OPFan , did you get help from the support? Or could you resolve the problem?
3 months of contact - lots of bubbles - no solution

this was one of the thousands of tryings - but also with zero effect
I'm having a lot of GPS issues since I've been using OPO or OP3.
I sold my OPO because of the bad GPS. Now I have the OP3.
On both phones I used custom ROM Cyanogenmod.
I sometimes had bad GPS reception, but this was fixed under Cyanogenmod doing this: Disable GPS, Disable Data, Enable Airplane mode, Disable Airplane mode, Enable Data, Enable GPS, then wait for GPS reception and start navi app.
Last week I flashed my OP3 with another ROM (AOSP) but this only made it worse!
I use my phone as car navigation daily, and while navigating, it finds GPS and it loses GPS every 5 seconds (using WAZE app). It's incredibly annoying. Using AGPS or any other "fix" found online doesn't fix the problem.
When using another navigation app, like Google nav, it's works better (because Google also uses LTE). Clearing cache or unistalling and reinstalling the WAZE app doesn't fix the problem.
Conclusion:
It is totally not related to your provider because they are working on fixed standard frequencies and I've been using the same provider on both phones.
It's also not related to the hardware only, because it was working on my OP3 under Cyanogenmod. So it should be related to the hardware driver included in the ROM.
Maybe this gives anyone an idea?

I dont know why, but in past devices I have encountered the same behaviour in the first weeks of use, but fine some time later, odd
Mine works perfect, actually better than my older N8, no drifting, much less interference around tall buildings etc. probably due to dual frequency receiver. If mine had such an issue, I would leave it outside for about 10 min to make sure it has enough time and clear sat view to download all the required sat data, especially on first start. later on the data only gets updated and should be much faster Also there is some way to reset GPS, in case it gets corrupted and doesn't work well, but I don't remember how anymore.
Know issue from Samsung
I'm guessing you have the 5G version as I do. There is a major flaw in the software where the GPS location services are unable to handover when the device switches between the 5G chip and the 4G/3G/2G chip.
This is a know fault that Samsung are working on fixing and are yet to release an update. The most obvious time this fault shows itself is when you are navigating and pass from a 5G area to a 4G area (or vice versa). The GPS drops completely and no satellites can be found. Switching off 5G in the settings stops this issue as the device cannot handover to the 5G chip if it's disabled.
This is obviously not a solution and Samsung are sending me updates every few days saying they are still working on it and hope to release a fix soon.
Hope this helps!
T-Mobile Samsung Note 10 Plus 5G - GPS Issue
If you are using T-Mobile version of Samsung Note 10+ 5G you will experience losing GPS signal constantly. The only way to resolve this software bug is:
Settings > Conections > Mobile Networks > Network mode > and then disable 5G Connection
Technically 5G connection there is nothing to do with GPS but at this point you will find it so related as the bug stays at Samsung Software. Hopefully they will be able to come up with a solution.
Check Time Syncronization
The setting to sync time was turned off. I noticed my phone was 7 minutes fast.... checked the time settings.* Turned on auto sync time.* Once the time was synchronized my GPS stopped being spotty and my games and maps that needed GPS started working correctly again.* The March update must have turned it off by default and I did not notice until my phone was off from my clock and other devices.
