Wall adaptor stopped charging - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

The wall charger that came with the pixel 2 xl no longer charges my phone. I received my 2xl on the 24th and it has been working flawlessly but this morning i woke up with no charge after being plugged in all night. I tried with an anker type c charger with the 2xl cable and it charges so i know the culprit is the wall adapter.
Has anyone else experienced a malfunction with the wall adapter or charging in general?
I have no problem using my anker charger since i bought it for the 2xl as another room charger but i dont find it acceptable that the stock charger stops working a day after 2 weeks.
Any ideas on how fix this? Would google possibly replace the wall adapter?

looks like this is an issue with the November security patch.
Same thing has happened to me on my Pixel 2 XL and i have three different official wall chargers and they will not work (all Type C PD), however it will work with the qualcom quick charge connector in my car.
reviewing the internet other people have the same issue and all seem post November update.

Motorola OEM chargers only?

Last night, I decided to use my HD2 charger, since it was already in my drawer. Charged it around midnight and woke up around 4 and it only charged 10% So I decided to use the Motorola charger, and when I woke up around 6 it was fully charged in less than 2 hours. So my question is, are we only suppose to be using the charger that came w/ it or is my outlet possessed
The actual cable doesn't matter, but the charging port seems to. My phone doesn't charge as well when hooked up to my HTC Aria's usb charge vs. the one that came with my Atrix or even the old Motorola Z9 charger I have (like this one since it's longer than my USB cable and it reaches my bed so I can do "Sleep as a Droid"
I tried using my Nexus charger last night and the phone didn't like it at all. It started FC'ing all over the place and I had to reboot it. The voltage on both chargers are the same. For a moment I thought I f'd it up but it's been fine all day.
I'm using Blackberry's micro usb chargers with no problem. I bought a few of these for my N1, and they work fine with the Atrix. The N1 charger from Google/HTC does not work like you all have said.

Check the amp output of the charger, a good one will be at 1amp, where most are around 500ma or less.
If you're having charging issues, it's probably because the charger isn't supplying the required 800ma draw. Most USB power adapters still only output 500ma max. Be sure your 3rd party charger can output 800ma or more. For example the Apple USB adapters can output anywhere from 1000ma to 2000ma and they work great charging the Atrix.
Hope this helps!

Yep to both. I tried my N1 charger last night, and the Atrix wasn't having it. Tried my BB charger at work and it charged up quickly. It's weird. On the plus side, a second usb cable is only 6 bucks from at&t ... which is fair.

The Atrix must be a little charge sensitive (maybe it has a rapid charge mode or something). We have at our counter a surge protector that also has two built in USB ports for charging. We've charged our iPhone 4 and my Captivate at the same time for months.
When I plugged in the Atrix, it starting chirping (like switching the charge mode on/off/on/off) and the iP4 _also_ started flipping out (again, like the power was being interrupted).
I wound up plugging into the same surge protector, but used a regular AC outlet and the supplied USB>>AC adapter. Everything ran/charged just fine.
Mine seems to freeze up and force close often whenever I charge it with my blackberry cord. The same cord had been charging my Backflip fine for months.
Need the Amp rating
I don't have an Atrix yet (I will soon).
The Blackberry charger that I have puts out 700mA.
But I have tried to use other micro USB chargers with the BlackBerry (BB) and if the charger does not put out the right amps, the BB keeps flipping into/out of clock mode. If you then plug in a BB charger....works great.
A USB-Port is only supposed to deliver 500mA by norm.
So, to charge the phone it hast to be >=500mA.
That explains why the Atrix charges really slow hooked up to a PC, since the battery is ~1900mA/h
You do the math
I'm using a Samsung wall charger right now with no problems.
Has anyone tried using an apple charger/aftermarket apple chager on their Atrix yet? I have an incase combo charger that can feed 2 amps (necessary for the ipad) and I'm worried it might cook something.

Yeah I use a cheap generic CELLNET wall charger and works perfect no problems

$39 for a usb combo charger ?
does it give me a bj everytime i plug it in ?
Thanks for all the help everyone. I decided to just stick w/ the Moto one for now. Sure does take freaking forever to charge via usb on your computer. Lots of juice power
I just got this charger from Amazon fro $5.99 with 2 day shipping (if you have Prime)and it is OEM !

I've used my wife's captivate charger, and it seemed to charge just fine, will need to look and see the output.. I may need to try my Iphone charger and see the rating...
The B&N Nook charger works fine too.
i forgot to bring my charger to work today, phone died. then i found a charger in my desk for an old bluetooth headset i no longer have. 5v-550ma......seems to be working but i suppose we shall see
I have been using my HTC Evo charger without a hitch.

My biggest concern... USB-C

I've got a lot of devices that use micro usb, and several quick charge adapters and hubs.
From my understanding the OP3 will only quick charge when using the specific charger and cable that comes with it.
Now I'm wondering if I'll no longer be able to charge while driving and using GPS... only true quick charge seems to catch up to that kind of drain.
Anyone have an idea how this might work?

I too heard that only its own charger will charge it, but with root and custom kernels I can only imagine it'll get open to any usb-c cable
It would still charge with any cable but not at "Dash" rate!
OnePlus AMA on Reddit they say there are Power Management chips built into the Chargers so doubtful of it being opened up to any USB-C cable at Dash Charge rates.

Nope not true at all. Any charger with a USB-C cable will charge this phone. Confirmed by Andrew on Android central
I submitted a question on what kind of usb type C connector they used. I'm wondering if they circumvented the "official" type C connection in order to implement their dash charging tech.
Get the £25 Car Charger that will stop problems with drain.

Okay, reading through the thread, I feel like I can give you some definitive answers, and maybe solutions as well.
1) The Dash charging management IS offloaded to the charger. This means that only a charger with the built in functionality will trigger Dash charging safely. However, they WILL be selling accessories for cars, walls, etc. Might be available now. Keep checking, and if you're really curious you can call them and find out if they have any plans for the above.
2) ANY USB-C cable will charge the device, but not at QuickCharge/Dash speeds. This isn't a matter of triggering it in the device via software; the device is missing the hardware to make this work without the proper chargers. So it WILL charge, but at normal speeds.
(That being said, I ADVISE AGAINST using any charger that's not branded for the device. These things can and have caught fire and gone boom, and there's a reason they test the **** out of them before releasing them into the wild. The kid in China making $2/hr does not get paid enough to care if you die, so that's your responsibility.)
3) The inclusion of quickcharging means you can get to a destination with a plug and be reasonably charged within an hour. Unless you're a trucker, you'll probably just need to carry a charger around with you if it becomes THAT much of an issue, or keep one at your destination (I do this with my HTC 10, since i only have one plug. Works fine, lasts overnight and the 1 hr train ride to work.)
Hope this helps.
I have a nexus 5x that has usb-c with no issues. I use the stock power brick to charge and bought a respectable anker usb to usb-c cable for my pc. Can use that to adapt to my car charger to. You shouldnt have any issues. When my op3 gets here ill still use the same anker cable.
I've been using the Anker 4.8A / 24W car charger for at least a year and have (quick charged) my Note 4, LG G4, Moto G, and other devices without any problems. But I've never owned a USB-c device, so I'm weary about using it.
I honestly don't want to spend another $100 on an extra adapter, cable, and car charger just to make it a little more convenient!
Well, while it is type C, and can charge at 2.1amps, it is also wise to understand the factory charger and cable are capable of so much more. It is essentially OPPO's VOOC, which takes the heat out of the device into the charger and pushes about 20 watts, even while the phone is active.
The below video (i came across) has a great comparison.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAS76EZ87dc
I don't wanna start new theme. So quick question. Does this usb-c support any hub with hdmi, full usb 3.0 (or2.0)and usb-c charging?
Keep in mind USB-C is the new standard, everything next year will be USB-C. So whats the difference between spending $100 on new chargers now or $100 next year when it is the only choice you have?
Also a quick google-foo shows there are several USB-C to HDMI/USB/USB-C adapters

Thanks for that info. I have to look that article up. I just wonder will is have USB-C Power Delivery 2.0 to Rapid Charge. I now know that not every smartphone that has a USB-C port rapid charges. Neither my Nextbit Robin nor HTC 10 do, and I later found out they weren't USB-C Power Delivery 2.0 compliant.
Not sure why you refer to USB-C to HDMI or DP but OP3 does not have video out support.
Think I'll just take the hit on my wallet and buy a spare Oneplus dash charger. I'm slightly annoyed they went for a protected system, when Apple did it we were unhappy, so far I've not seen the community complain about this new Oneplus 'feature'.

I was going to complain, but then I did the research on DASH/VOOC and realized it is best in class, better than anything on the market to date. Quickly Charge with little heat... I'll pay 30 for a 2nd charger. And if I am in a bind, I'll just use normal USB C and suffer as I do now with my 1+1.
My only grr moment is seeing a car charger is $30.

sorry did not see this. the oneplus 3 charges at a much slower speed using the stock nexus 6p charger. i checked
I use the dash charger at home and a standard 2.1A Capdase Power adapter in the car and a 2.1A Capdase Wall Adapter at work. Obviously only the Oneplus Dash Charger Charges at lightning speeds. But to be honest.the other chargers also do faster than normal charging. Im comparing from my oneplus 2 that one used to take forever to charge. I get a full charge with the dash charger in say abt 45 to 50 mins. And with the normal charger in about 1hr 30 mins. Which is still quite fast IMO. Oneplus 2 used to charge completely in about 3 hours. Im using the oneplus 3 cable with the Dash charger. The Oneplus 2 Cable in my car and an UltraProlink USB to Type C cable at work.
Tldr. Dash charger works super fast. Other normal chargers work just fine.

Thanks for checking. Excuse my lateness. I had a feeling that would be the case because it charges severly slower with my USB-C Rapid Wall Chargers.

That's great, It takes me about 70-72 minutes for a full charge from 0-100%. On top of the speed, I really appreciate that it doesn't overheat. I feel more confident with any smartphone that doesn't overheat while charging.

Can no longer rapid charge with my PC

So this is very frustrating. I built a new PC in March that has a type C port on the back. I bought a Choetech C to C cable for it and zip tied it to my speaker wires so it would stay on my desk for rapid charging. I had a nexus 6p then and it worked without a hitch, I was able to get up to 3amps according to the ampere app and it displayed "charging rapidly" on the screen. Now I'm doing some stuff on my computer and decided to plug in my pixel XL, and I'm getting "Charging slowly" and its not charging faster than 480mah. Windows is up to date and my Pixel XL is on 8.1. Just tried the factory USB cable to see if that was the problem, and same thing, still doesn't want to rapid charge my phone. I don't know where to start to figure this out. Is this some weird oreo setting? Is it something in windows? BTW the motherboard is a MSI B350 Tomahawk. Thanks
Most USB ports are 5V w/ X amp - these phones use a higher charging voltage for rapid charging, resulting in slower charging from previous rapid charging adapters or ports.

Yeah but this is a type C USB 3.1 port, and it has rapidly charged my Nexus 6p I had previously on more than one occasion just like plugging it into the wall. A type C port on a PC is capable of supplying 15 watts I believe.
I just put a type C charger on my power strip. So freaking annoyed about this. About to RMA my motherboard. No one has any answers for me. The port is literally useless as I can get USB 3.1 slow charging out of my regular type A ports. Am I the only guy in the world that used his PC with a type C port to charge his type C phone? Sure seems that way.
The same happened to me. I have PC with a mobo with USB-C 3.1. When I got my Pixel XL, a few months ago, I clearly saw quick charge when I used it... but now (I don't use a lot charging over my PC) I plugged it to my computer and no more... any ideas?! Maybe February or March update ruined?!

I'm pretty sure Google disabled it on purpose because of the overcharging bug affecting the XL when using type-c to type-c charging .

Well, if this matters I tried today to charge via usb-c 3.1 on my computer, and for a fraction of a second I just saw charging rapidly on my XL screen !!! Then it fall to slowly charge... Fckv Google!!!

The only way I ever get rapid charging is using the original cable/google usb-c + original charger
I have usb 3.1 on my computer and don't get rapid charging.
I mean, if your computer works with your 6p, then you know it's an issue with the pixel xl. it might be software, it might be hardware - when you use original cable/charger you get QC?

well this is not so true... I have a car charger from anker, with 2 usb + 1 usb-c port and I get quick charge from usb-c port!!! And I'm using a usb-c cable from anker too.
I have the MSI Tomahawk B350 as well. The type-c port doesn't seem to recognize my Pixel 2 XL nor charges it at all. It's a new PC build so going to have to contact MSI to see what's up with that.
Guess what guys, the fast charge that I lost a few months ago, now with the October update, I finally have Charge Rapidly when charging via USB-C on my windows PC !!!! Yeahhh!!!

Wireless charger charging very slow

Yes, I know that any other charger than pixel stand won't charge faster than 5W. But still, I've got baseus simple wireless charger (2A) and connected my pixel 3 xl for the night. It had about 45% before and about 55% in the morning. So it got about 10% in 6 hours. That's super slow. I've tested it in Ampere and it shown about 300mah. Charger itself is connected to rock wall charger with 2A power output. I'm also using Spiegen ruggee armor case. What's going on?
It seems that the baseus wireless charger is causing the problem
Try again without the case, a different charger block, and then again on a different wireless charger. I've been using wireless charging since the Nexus 6 and it can be a bunch of different things.
Generally I try to use a "matched" charging block to the wireless charger itself. For example, if it is a 2A wireless charging stand I'll pair it up with a 2A charging block not a QC 3.0 charging block. While this shouldn't make a difference it could be a problem.
I have multiple Itian wireless stands that I use for my iPhone X, Nexus 6, and Pixel 3 XL and I only have some minor issues.
One issue is that every once in a while I have to unplug and re-plug the micro USB cable into the charger because it just stops working for no reason. Other times it's something as simple as the phone isn't sitting in the stand correctly.
The way wireless charging works is through inductive coils and I bought the Itian wireless charging stands on purpose cause they have three coils reducing the issue of not properly setting the device in the cradle.
Unfortunately it's hard to say what it is exactly but try different things that seem logical as to why it isn't working for you. Good luck!

Similar here, I've been a wireless charger lover since Shamu and Nokia Icon. I still use the same Tylt Vue chargers. It charges slowly, but who cares, it's on the night stand and easily makes 100% by morning.
I have to say I've tried again few nights and it's working better. What matters is the position on the charger. If it's a bit off it charges slower. I guess case may be slowing it down as well.

2XL power bank charging issue – not the October update problem

2XL EU model, February 2019 (PQ2A.190205.002) installed.
I'm having charging issue with my power banks. The wall charger is working great and as expected, 60-70% charge in an hour. The problem is that both power banks do not charge the 2 XL at all. I've measured the charging current with a USB power meter and the charge is 5V at 0,04-0,07A and stays like this forever. And the same goes for the other QC2 power bank, <= 0,07 A and that's it. One of the banks is Baseus PPYZ-C09 and it's advertised as QC3-compatible charger. And it does have an orange USB socket, so I guess it really does QC3 as advertised.
I've tried three USB-A to C cables and it doesn't change, the charging current stays low. I use USB-C to C cable for the wall charger but I doubt it's the cause since it's a 3rd party charger and cable, am I wrong?
Now, anyone having the same issue with 2 XL and power banks?
The power banks seem OK, I remember that my previous phone, Nexus 6P, was charging quickly with QC2 one [haven't tried QC3 one since I gave 6P away to my family] although I've noticed that 6P was having trouble charging in the same fashion and it started sometime last year. But then again, it's not Android 9... May the issue be related?
NOTE: A "stupid", old, 18850-based power bank works flawlessly, pumping just shy of 0,5A at 97% charge using the very same USB-A to C cable I tried earlier and failed.
Just a small follow-up for those interested...
It turns out that the Baseus power bank I was mentioning in the previous post does deliver fast charge but only using the USB-C to USB-C cable. It charges my 2 XL using 9 V. I couldn't get this speed/voltage using variety of USB-A to USB-C cables thou despite them working OK with other devices [the power bank does charge at 12 V from a wall charger].
And I'm curious why is that and how does 2 XL differentiate between C-C and A-C cables?
Pixel uses USB PD charging, which generally only works on USB-C. I've never seen a non-USB C PD charger.
Yup, but the funny thing is that the same Baseus charger I was testing with 2 XL, can handle Motorola G7 Power's TurboCharge [which I belive is just a fancy name of QC3.0] with 18W [12 V] with no problem. And Pixel 2 XL does not recognize this setup.
I've read somewhere that 2 XL can handle up to 10 W of charge power and I can confirm this –*my Baseus Power Bank shows that 9 V is being used when 2 XL is connected with C-to-C cable. But then again, the same power bank, either with C-to-C cable or a standard A-to-C cable attached to powerbanks' PD outlet, allows Motorola G7 Power to "suck" current at 12 V.
So definitely there is some constraint in the 2 XL software regarding power delivery options.
