Automobile Quick Charging Solution

What is the best solution for quick charging the Galaxy Nexus in an automobile?

I have started to use 12-220 volt converter so I can use wall chargers.

I have bought a few of the low profile car usb chargers but they were never recognized as an AC charge. Come to find out, it was the USB cable. I bought a usb charging cable from Amazon last week and it goes in the USB charger and the phone does not think it is a USB charge. I have not timed it but it is recognized the same as the wall charger.

+1 .. this solution has been working great for me, as well.

I've been getting 2.1A car chargers (look for ones for the iPad), most of the ones I had prior to this were 700mA or so and they can't keep up with my 1A phones. Be careful of dual port chargers advertising 2A, they may only be 1A each and may be "optimistic" about that rating. And don't worry about getting one rated for too much current, the Galaxy Nexus won't pull more than an amp no matter what the charger rating.

I'd really hate to use an inventer in my car just to maintain a clean install, so that really isnt an option for me.
Was really hoping to be able to use a off the shelf car charger with the correct pins to trick the GNexus into thinking that it was charging from a USB port, but the above solution should work well with using a socket USB charger.

I've never run into a car adapter that looks like a USB port, including the VZW charger with a spare port or the cheap 2.1A chargers I got from Amazon. My guess is that a charger not built correctly and leaving the data pins open only supports ~500mA anyway. Even if that's not the case I have a moral objection toward buying a cable to fix a design flaw in another cheap product - but that's just me

All I had to do was undo the screws at the top, put a bit of solder between the middle usb pins, and my phone recognises it as a AC source rather than USB.

There has got to be a standard car charger on the market with the middle usb pins already soldiered!

Make sure the charger has the IC (rapid) chip. I use this one:

I've heard that Motorola one mentioned a lot as a good one.
The nice thing about having the low-profile usb plug is (a) it is low profile, (b) I can use it to charge other devices. The charge-only cable is only about $4, so I had no issues buying it to work with this to charge as an AC charge over a USB charge.

I have this one and it charges just like it does from the home outlet and its says "AC" charging. I bought another 8 for family and friends and they all love it.

I think I've figured out the disconnect, I've run into chargers that appear as a USB host which limits the charging to 500mA on previous phones I've had.
You guys are concerned about USB vs. AC charging mode. Of the chargers I've got, this one lists as AC while the rest as USB. However, the fact that the other chargers all work just fine keeping up with GPS+streaming music indicates that the USB vs. AC really has no bearing on the charge current delivered. I'd stay away from charge-only cables just because they'll get mixed in with your standard USB cables and you'll knock yourself out wondering why they don't work. On the other hand, if you really want AC in your battery info order the one I linked.

I keep it in my car... i think I've heard on other threads that USB charging doesn't keep up with GPS (for Directions). Any verify?

What's much more important is the rating on the power source. The GN can pull up to 1000mA, if your charger is only rated for 800mA (like many car chargers) it doesn't matter if it's in AC mode.

makes sense.. the one I use has dual usb (1.0 and 2.1)

You went and gave me a project for the weekend, and once again science prevails over anecdotal evidence. I took each of my 5 chargers and hooked them up to a 12V power supply that measures current. I then recorded whether the charger reported AC or USB, for the ones with USB I modified a right-angle adapter to short out the data pins, and I measured the current. The contenders:
Verizon Wireless Dual Charger
XTG Dual Port Charger
Griffen Powerjolt Dual USB Charger
Griffen Portjolt Micro
CostMad Dual USB Charger
The VZW model was USB out the external port as I had tested before, however AC out the built-in cable which I hadn't bothered to test. It pulled 0.25A @12V via the USB port and 0.59A via the cable. Hmmm... A hole develops in my previous observation. While I had used this on a long car trip with no issues, it was via the built-in cable.
The XTG was new, I hadn't used it before as it's in the car I rarely drive. It reported USB and 0.22A. With the adapter to make it report AC it pulled 0.48A.
The pattern was set. I had expected the Griffen adapters to be built more appropriately but the dual charger reported 0.22A without the adapter and 0.42A with. I had used this without losing charge in the past so this was surprising to me, but it's possible I just wasn't drawing as much current because the screen was dimmer or something.
The compact Griffen adapter (which is great for a laptop bag, BTW) pulled 0.21A and 0.47A respectively.
The cheap CostMad adapter was the only one that performed well out of the box, both reporting AC and pulled 0.57A.
In theory, a perfect adapter should pull 0.42A. Anything more is waste, anything less means it's not keeping up. I have doubts about the Griffen 2x allowing for a full amp, but the VZW and CostMad chargers are pretty lossy. What's even worse is that I'm pretty sure the VZW charger is rated for 800mA (but I can't find an actual spec on it) which would mean that it pulled the most power for the least current. Not that this really matters unless you've got an electric car.
Sorry for misleading you earlier, I should have checked the other port of the known-good VZW charger and probably doublechecked the numbers on my other "known good" charger. Still hating cables that work for charging but not for data, I ended up modifying each of the chargers to short the middle pins (except for the VZW one). If I didn't have the soldering iron for this, I probably would have gone for some of these instead.

I'm using the same one and it works perfect. Charges even when GPS navigation is running.
Make sure you select Amazon as the seller though. I heard there are a lot of fake ones.

+1 to those recommending this one. I have this exact model and it does indeed charge at the "AC" rate, about twice as fast as the "USB" rate.

The Motorola one will charge even when using GPS. I have a friend I bought one for that uses his GPS all day and loves the Motorola charger.

[Review] CHOETECH QC 3.0 6-Port USB charging

Just wanted to post a short review on the CHOETECH 6 Port charger. Model Q3-4U2Q
For full disclosure I received a discount on the item if I would post an honest review of the item on Amazon. I still paid a fair price and there was actually no guarantee for them I would even post any review let alone a positive one. Fair enough... It was well timed for me having just gotten my HTC 10 so I thought I would share some of my findings.
I'm currently using it with the Belkin USB-C usb 3.1 cable that can be found at walmart. This charger has 6 USB ports (2 QC 3.0 and 4 smart sensing ports). With my aforementioned cable I get the same if not better charge time than I did with my HTC provided qc 3.0 charger. No heat. No warnings. No funkiness. Which is big given some of the recent hot phone posts I've been reading. One other non-HTC thing that surprised me is that this charger also plays nice (even though they posted a warning it might not) with the Moto X pure 2015. I was able to quick charge both my Moto X pure and my HTC 10 at the same time off the same charger!
I had been wanting to replace my power strip full of chargers with a single block on my night stand for a long time. No longer have trip lines all over the place. Also have a single efficiency power supply now instead of 5 different ones all burning juice whether used or not. If you are looking for this type of solution to replace your many chargers, this one I can recommend.

I just want to follow up on @dottat's review. I got my 6 port charging dock over the weekend, and am extremely happy with it. I was able to clean up my mess of cables for charging all of my devices, and the QC3.0 ports work great with my QC2.0 and 3.0 devices.
I was lucky and received a USB C cable with my dock, but that might have been an abnormal case, since most people have been getting micro-USB cables instead.
If you don't have any qc3.0 chargers already, I would highly recommend this over a standard wall plug, as it is well worth the price difference.

To add to @dottat review I was sent a charger from Choetech at a discount in exchange for my unbiased review.
The adoption of QC 3.0 in flagships this year (aside from the S7/S7 Edge) has created a market for accessories to meet this standard. My HTC 10 supports QC 3.0 thankfully, so this hub will allow my phone to take full advantage of that capability while still allowing my S7 Edge to charge via QC 2.0 over the other QC port due to the backwards compatibility Qualcomm has.
Each of the two QC 3.0 ports are clearly marked with a signature blue to make the easier to find. Choetech also has them on one side so you know exactly where to find them if you need. Along the front you will also find a nice softly lit blue LED indicator light that turns on when the hub is plugged into the wall.
I was able to quick charge both my HTC 10 and S7 Edge via the hub while also having both my Nexus 6P’s charge at 5V/1.5A over the standard smart ports. This is about the limit of the hub given how each QC port can output 18W max, while the smartports each can offer 12W if the device can pull that much power over the 5V port. Given the 18W per QC port while the two phones are charging and 7.5W per Nexus phone from the smart ports that would be about 45W if all of the devices were pulling the maximum amount of power from each port simultaneously. In reality the devices will fluctuate the amount of power, so you shouldn’t have any issues charging multiple devices fast with this hub.
On the build side of things Choetech never disappoints with their solid construction, soft feel finish, and compact design. I own a QC 2.0 version of this same hub that sat on my TV stand for a while before being replaced by the Type-C hub I also reviewed. This particular one is sitting on my desk powering a wireless fast charger for my S7 Edge, my HTC 10, Logitech MX Master mouse, LG Tone Platinum headphones, and anything else that I need to charge.

Overall I think Choetech took an already great charger, and made it better by adding QC 3.0, and a stand thus fixing any small issues people might have experienced before.

I'm very happy with it. There was a coupon when I got it. I just wish I would have purchased one more sooner with USB C port. When I'm charging in the HTC 10 nearly dead battery It's saved me several times and the quick charge 3.0 is very very quick. I like have spare ports. Solid build quality. Excellent product. It's a great hub. I charge my phone at fasted speeds but mostly I use it for gaming. I have my ps4 controller being charged as I play and phone stay charged with it.

Just received my unit today and it couldn't have come at a better time! First off the build quality is great, and it has a very nice weight to it. You don't have to worry about it sliding all over the desk either. I only have the HTC usb type C cable right now and it works flawlessly with it, and I have another cable coming from Amazon so we will see how it works with that. It charges the HTC 10 just as fast as the charging brick that it comes with. This desktop charger is perfect for my desk and all of the gadgets I have and although I received it at a 70% discount I wouldn't hesitate to buy it at full price. If you have a HTC 10 and are worried about buying a charger that won't take advantage of the quick charge 3.0 on your HTC 10 then this is exactly what you need. The only con I can think of is that it doesn't come with a USB type C cable but it does come with a nice quality micro usb cable.

I received this charger, and it works great. Small and compact, and charges by devices very quickly. I recommend it highly.

I'd also like to add to this review. I received this desktop charging station at a discount for an honest review. I've gotta say I've been really impressed with Choetech products, and this is no exception. It comes in a clean minimal looking box, open the cardboard and you get the 6 port hub, the power wire, a nice, thick micro usb cable, and even better a nice hub stand, which is a nice thought for those of us who hate having things topple over.
I've tested this on an LG G5 and the HTC 10, the hub has quick charge 3.0, actually has two of them, while the other 4 ports are nice smart ports capable of 2.4A output. It charges at quick charge 3.0 no problem, even using both ports (highlighted by blue ports) at the same time. Meanwhile the other 4 ports can easily charge other devices at basically max speed (2.4a) for those with iPads/tablets and/or other phones like iPhones.
I took this with me on vacation with my family, and it was super convenient being able to basically charge all our devices at the same time no problem. It never got hot, and the stand was a nice touch. I highly recommend it.

I have ordered the CHOETECH 6 -port desktop charger for my devices and specifically for the HTC 10 because it supports the latest Quick Charge 3.0 technology .
The unit has a nice size . It is small and does not need much space . It has an output power of 50 watts. Thus, several devices can be charged together easily . By QC3.0 slot it charges my HTC 10 in about the same time as using the supplied AC adapter from HTC . It has 2 Quick Charge ports and 4 normal USB ports to charge the device . Moreover, it remains a USB Type C cable included .
It helps the clutter and the vast amounts of network devices that you already have to be replaced by a single one .
Can recommend to others !

Here is my review for the CHOETECH QC 3.0 6-Port USB Charger that I also left on Amazon.
I tested this Quick Charge 3.0 CHOETECH wall charger with my new HTC 10. I am happy to report that so far this charger has charged my HTC 10 at the same speeds (if not better) than my stock HTC 10 charger. This charger is MUCH better than my stock HTC 10 charger though, because it includes 1 EXTRA Quick Charge 3.0 port and 4 Auto Detect ports! I now have this as my main charger for my HTC 10, work iPhone, N3DS, and Power Bank. I highly recommend this charger!
Pros:
- 2 QC 3.0 Ports + 4 Smart Ports = 6 Total Ports!
- Small enough to carry while traveling
- Frees up space on my power strip now that I can plug most of my devices into this wall charger

I have received this product for free or discounted price for my unbiased review. This does not affect my review score, as I try to review each item honestly.

Like others on here, I did receive this item for a discounted price, but had no real expectations of it beforehand. Having used it for a few days now, I'm very impressed. It's quite a small unit and only requires a small 2 pin power lead, so you don't really have many trailing cables being plugged into the mains. Been using it charge various devices at the same time and had no issue with charging on any of them. At any one time I've had a Nexus 6P, HTC 10 and an iPad mini plugged in to it and all have charged at relatively the same time it would on a normal charger.
My only downside is that it doesn't support rapid charging for the Nexus 6P, however that would be picking small faults with quite an impressive device.

Disagree with NONE of the above. Wonderful piece of kit.
It'd be perfect if the UK didn't use mains plugs the size of a small family car. Mind, I can hardly blame Choetech for that. Truth is, their UK mains plug is about as small as it can be. If I could find one, I'd attach a picture of a UK plug so those who aren't familiar with it can see just how big it is.

I too got one of those Power Stations for Discounted Price in exchange for review. I compared to other Chargers as a baseline in terms of Current Drawn by the phone.
For the purpose of Test, I used my LG G4 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 808) which supports Quick Charge 2.0. The technology is backward compatible. In order to minimize the variables in the Testing, I have used one Cable for all the Testing across Charges as well as both devices. I used the free Ampere app to measure the Current drawn by the Battery. Screenshots are attached. In addition, I kept the devices Idle for the purpose of testing. This would eliminate any In Use changes of current Drawn.
The G4's Stock LG Charger is Qualcomm Quick Charge Compliant. When I started to charge, the phone's battery was at 34 %. I typically let the battery die to about 5 to 8% before plugging in. But in this case I didn't want Android Battery Saver to kick in and throttle CPU. So I plugged in at 34 %. When plugging into Quick Charge Port, the Max Current was registered at 1000 mA. This was same as the LG Stock Charger. I also compared against another Charger that was not Quick Charge as well as a 4th one that was Quick Charge as well. The Non-Quick Charge charger registered 780 mA.
Conclusion - With the Quick Charge Port, the current drawn is in line with the LG Stock Charger. However the one one for Normal port predictably drops down in comparison. Also at lower levels of the battery, Current drawn from the Quick Charge Port is much higher, just like in case of Stock Charge. However it drops to lower values as Battery nears completion. The current from Normal port nearly remains the same irrespective of battery levels.

Just going to give my thoughts on this charger.
The charger seems to be well made, and has plenty of power to support multiple devices charging simultaneously.
Testing with my Nexus 5X and USB Doctor, I get just under 1.9A and just over 5V which about what is expected.
Tests on the QC3.0 compatible Axon 7 results in the much faster quick charging which is expected as well.
So overall, the charger does it's job.
What surprised me the most was the little things they added to make the product feel more premium then it's competitors. The charger is encased in a soft plastic that has a nice tactile feel. It also comes with a nice stand and a USB A-C cable. The LED on the charger is a soft glow instead of the blinding glare that you often see on other electronics.
Given the cost, it's probably one of the best bang for buck charging stations compared to it's competitors. I definitely recommend it if you're looking for a USB charging station with QC3.

I do have a CHOETECH 30 watt 12 volt car charger and when I plug it in my 10 does show quick charger connected but it does not for this 6 port 50 watt charger ? Anyone have theirs show as quick charger connected when plugging in to any of the 6 ports on this charger ?

So your htc 10 shows quick charger connected when you plug it in to one of the quick charge ports ? Mine does not and the same cable when used with my oem Htc quick charger it does show quick charger connected. Maybe mine is defective then ?

Small USB-C Battery???

So, I'm getting the Pixel 2 XL...
I like to carry a battery in my pocket that can give me a nice boost in case I get stuck somewhere without having to carry a charger and cable.

You could just carry any USB battery then, along with a USB-A to USB-C cable, especially if you don't care about the charge speed

there's an anker compact 13000mAh that has a USB-C port. i would not worry about a built-in cable to the charger as that can severely impact on longevity.. get a nice battery and use your own cable.

That looks promising. Any idea about case compatibility? I'm concerned that the connector may not be long enough to clear a case.

I agree with someone's post about built-in cables. They can go bad and then you're screwed. I ordered this one.

I coach high school basketball and some of the schools we go to are spotty for coverage which kills my phone battery when it's searching constantly. I'd like something that I could charge it while I'm sitting on bus rides and it fast charges for an hour. Thanks!

Any battery packs that support Power Delivery (PD) will be compatible with the fast charging for the Pixel 2 XL. You can find several through Amazon in varying sizes.

I admit, I like the original poster, am having a hard time finding a small PD compatible battery. Most of what I see, I wouldn't consider pocket size.

Small ones are tough to find because PD is relatively new and right now is more prevalent in larger devices such as laptops that would require a bigger battery pack. But more options are on the way.

The Aukey I posted is 15w which isn't PD 18w but it should be close enough. I'll definitely compare it to the included charger.

I can vouch for that one. I got it during my trip to Japan recently. Worked great for my N6P!

The Amazon Basics unit has worked quite well for me.

So I FINALLY got to test my Aukey 10500 mAh Power Bank. Reason it took so long is that the battery life for the Pixel 2 XL has been so good I have never had to use the Power Bank on the go. LOL. I had to make an effort to use it at home instead of the stock charger.
Anyway here's my review:
Charging test times and percentages:
Start - 10%
30 minutes - 48% (Interestingly faster than I've gotten with OEM charger)
60 minutes - 79%
75 minutes - 87%
90 minutes - 92%
105 minutes - 95%
Pros:
- Charges my #Pixel2XL as fast as the stock charger.
- USB-C is output AND input so Power Bank itself can be fast charged.
- Pocketable yet can probably charge my phone 2.5 times.
- Includes a nice protector sleeve
Cons:
- Only comes with a 2 ft. USB-A to USB-C cable. I switched it with a spare USB-A to Micro USB if I have to charge non-C devices.
- Need your own USB-C to USB-C cable to get the most of it. Using my previous #Nexus5X cable which works but isn't very compact at 3ft. 3 inches.
- Not Power Delivery so you only get 5v/3a charging.
- At $29.99, it's pricey compared to comparable battery banks of the same capacity.
Conclusion:
Still worth it if you have a USB-C device. There aren't many quality USB-C battery banks that are both input/output AND compact If they are around 10k mAh, they're only input USB-C. If they're input/output, they're most like 20k mAh.

I've been using the same one from RavPower. I had gotten it a few months before getting the Pixel 2 XL. I fly frequently (typically out of town most weeks -- Mon to Thu routine), and I had found the 120v outlets on planes to be inconsistent, sometimes painful to find (as in down under the front of your seat and impossible to see once you're sitting), so I took to carrying a battery with me to provide extra power when flying.
This model turns out to be perfect for the Pixel 2 (and XL). The phone acknowledges immediately that it's "charging rapidly", and it in fact is doing so. I'll typically get on the plane after a full day of work, plug my P2XL into the battery's USB C connection (using an official Google USB-C to USB-C cable), fire up my bluetooth headphones, switch on airplane mode (and then reactivate bluetooth), listen to Google Play Music and do crossword puzzles (and/or sleep) for the next 2 or 3 hours on the plane. When I arrive, my phone is fully charged, and the battery only seems to be depleted about 20% to 25%.
At a hotel and sometimes at home, If I don't want to deal with two charging wall warts, I can plug the battery into the wall to charge using the QC 3.0 charging input and a QC 3.0 compatible wall wart (I've got a few left over from all the Droid Turbo 2's we had in the house until recently) so the battery charges at top speed, and simultaneously use a USB-C to USB-C straight into the P2XL. The battery and the phone both charge simultaneously. I haven't time this versus using separate wall warts, but all in all this has proven to be convenient -- and it works.
Excellent battery. Highly functional, and holds a pretty huge charge.

i recommend the 10000mah xiaomi type c one - really love it and it's aluminum design stands out as well

Try any type from Anker. As long as it has qualcomm fast charging, it is fast enough. Only a couple minutes behind stock samsung charger.

I actually got it too from ebay and can confirm it works just like the original charger, I think it might be actually charging up to 45w.

The charger said 26.2V, 9.32V and, 2.75A and its able to support 15V at 3A and 20V at 2.25
Supplying 24V to the Baseus car charger, it only supplied 9.32V X 2.75A = 25.63‬Watts which is about the same just using 12V
My current cable only supports PD 2.0 60W, 3 Amps

Not all cables are the same. But i'm calling this as a good 25Watt charger with cable combo just untill it burns out

Its pretty crazy that Samsung chose the latest PD 3.0 variant with PPS, requiring the odd 10V at 4.5A. Clever heat management, but until now I came up empty finding the exact supporting charger other than the Samsung original who also seems to have its challenges. Any USB-C PD 30W charger should work. Check out Amazon. If you want you can get a PPS charger, but PPS is not necessary.
Please note the Pixel 6 only supports 22 watt fast charging.

That's absolutely false. If you have some random Quick Charge or proprietary charger at 30W or higher, it will not charge at 22W. Might only charge at 10W, not even 15W or 18W.
My Warp Charge 30 bricks can only do 10W.
Charger must have at least PD support.

To get the limited 22w charging that Google's put on the 6 Pro you do need PPS. The fastest PD will do is 18w.

It's not the prettiest solution, but seems to work well. No more cables to mess with. Just throw the phone on the pad and drive off. Probably not the fastest charger, but it's enough to run GPS and music, while still gaining charge, which is all I need.

Make sure the wireless charger supports the 15W Qi EPP (extended power profile) feature.
Otherwise you're stuck at 5W. Most no-name charging pads or cars with built-in wireless charging have been falling into this category but newer ones like the Tucson are 15W.
I'd like to know what the phone and Pixel Stand expect for 23W charging.

Received mine yesterday and was pleasantly surprised it came with a long, braided Type-C cable. I didn't actually read the description. There was a $6 coupon so I jumped on it. Will try to test and see how much current it outputs later this evening.

Considering I was at 36% the 4,148A charge current is pretty good. The highest I've seen with a PPS wall charge was 4400+.
I would've gained more in 28 minutes but 25 of it had YouTube running. Don't worry I pay attention to the road. The screen off %/h is right up there with my PPS wal charger.

I use my OnePlus 9 Pro car charger for my pixel and it does great!

This one? That would be interesting if it really charges well for you because everyone else I've seen has had issues with OnePlus charges because it's not even Power Delivery. This one in particular is either the Warp Charge 5V=6A max or old slow 5V=2A charging.

Not to mention warp charge is completely propriety, requires specific circuitry in the phone and a USB lead with non standard wiring.

Is this good for pixel 6 charging because it's 5v-3amp, I have it already but just want to confirm if it is good enough and will not effect battery health in long run since it is 15w while charging.

one thing I suggest, is don't skimp out on a car charger. many years ago, I messed up a few phones using crappy car chargers. the Zus Smart Charger is the best car charger I've ever used. the quality is incredible. its half price in the US at $16.99 (they should pay me or something!) -

it's not the fastest, it charges my 6Pro at like 1200mah or so...but the quality alone is worth it. I've been using it since 2017 and I've charged all my pixels and tablets with it.
this might be the best kept secret - just for the app, that anyone can use for free!
I just wanted to add;; their app is pretty cool, the car charger will show your Voltage level for your car battery and a ton of other things. Their app also connects to any OBD-II adapter via bluetooth and you can have a ton of cool telemetry appear on your phone (like revs, speed, engine temps etc , for those who like that sorta thing). and it will help you find your parked car if you forget where you parked ha! last year they were sending out free OBD_II adapters (but you can use any) and with their free app that anybody can use, you can use it to log your drives by mileage and a ton of other features. it's pretty slick !!
but if you want a crazy fast car charger, the anker that someone posted above is excellent - but in the car, which is usually really hot, I don't want anything fast charging. keeping things cool is what I'm all about//
