I'm on 8.1 and it works fine for me. If you are rooted there is a magisk module that I've used before that will get it working. The google assistant apk is also available to download at apk mirror. I haven't tried it though so I'm not sure if it would work.

OK nevermind, found the problem, for some reason the voice activation was off. Probable turned off when I activated the squeeze function.

The actual app worked for me when I used the module but voice activation didn't. The magisk module got it working again.

I opened the app and set my SSID and Passphrase. When I hit connect I get this force close message every time. Any ideas?
You have to uninstall it and then reinstall it from the google code website. I can't post links but google "wireless tether google code"
i tried that and it still wont work

Strange, uninstall/reinstall worked for me. I installed the one from the market, I'm sure it's the same as the one from the google code page though.
I'll try it hopefully it works.

I had this issue and I realized that I accidentally forgot to turn off the wifi in settings. It sounds ridiculous, I know, but just in case.
I uninstalled it and re-installed the apk from the google code website and it works now. Thanks.
I use the Android Auto app all the time in the car. And usually (in the past) "ok google" commands work great.
But now, on my Mi max, Google tells me to unlock the phone before using voice commands.....but the thing is, it IS unlocked (android Auto is open, and the screen is ON).
Any ideas??
thanks in advance.
Btw....I love this phone.
In an update, I have sorted out the problem. All I did was update Google Play services and now everything seems to be working fine. Just thought I'd share the solution.
Hi..
Which Google Play services are you running?
I have this problem and Im running the latest version of Google Play and Android Auto on MIUI 8.2.2 but im still having this issue
Thanks

Hi. I have the latest Version. I haven't had this problem for about a month now. Seems to have settled down.

Here you go.
Still no luck for me.
Trying to narrow down the cause.
Can I trouble you again to report your MIUI and Google app(not Google Play services) versions that you are running?

Here you go.
Update Google services, mi sync, and then wait. There's a delay at times while most of the times android auto connects well.
Background apps also hamper the sync levels
Seen this with EMUI also
I have a pixel 3 xl with the latest December firmware, I'm on T-Mobile and I live in Florida. As I said everything is updated I have the call screen option in the phone app, I even have dark mode. Now when you go to change the voice selection in call screen, the voice part is greyed out and says "ACTIVATING CALL SCREEN REQUIRES WIFI " I connect to both wifi and hotspot and still not activating.I contacted Google like 15 times send bug report, still no help.

I'm wondering if it's my Carrier. It's greyed out

Are you a beta tester of the phone app? I was a beta tester and I had an issue slightly different than yours. I was able to activate it but it didn't work. I opted out of the beta testing and then uninstalled and reinstalled the app and it worked. Maybe try to become a beta tester if you're not one already. Just throwing some suggestions out.
Ok I will try that thank you

+1. You don't have any wifi running in that screen shot.
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Lately when I've been asking Google to set a reminder it ALWAYS says "sure, let me get some more information so I can help you with that" and shows the attached screen in my attachment
Hey Google, remind me at 3pm of my haircut. "sure, let me get some more information so I can help you with that"
Hey, Google remind me at 4pm to put on pants.. "sure, let me get some more information so I can help you with that"
Download the assistant app. I know it sounds dumb but try it. I had a similar issue when I had my pixel 3 the one that comes on it sux u need the full one from the playstore. a Few built in apps are like that and it's stupid to me.

I downloaded Google Assistant from the Play Store. When I say Hey Google it appears to still open the stock google assistant app and gives me the same result when asking it to do something.
If I manually open the Google assistant app that I downloaded as soon as I say Hey Google it just stops doing anything

Judging by the screenshot you didn't set it up fully yet. You're still showing the "GET STARTED" option. Did you go through all the steps to 100% complete the setup? That's what it looks like you need to do.

That getting started comes up every time. I've had this phone for almost a year and used Google Assistant all of the time. It's just recently that this issue has come up.
I'm going to uninstall what I can related to Google Assistant, clear data of what I can't and sign out of everything and then sign back in and see if that helps
EDIT: uninstalling and reinstalling, clearing data from some Google services, signed of my Google account linked to assistance and verything seems to be fine now
Back to doing it again...fml
You could try booting to safe mode and see if the problem persists. If not, there's an app interfering. If the problem is still there in safe mode, then that's something glitchy about the Google setup.

I haven't tried the reboot into safe mode yet. Sometimes Google Assistant gets its crap together and works fine and then other times it needs more information. At this moment it's working again. Once it acts up I'm going to do the safe mode way and see if that works.

Nope
I'm not sure why but Assistant voice typing and google recorder app's transcription features are not working. I tried rebooting the device, uninstall updates but nothing seems to work... But the features did work before so I'm not sure what is wrong now.
My device is rooted and has the pixelify module installed, could this be one of the reason? I did tell it to enable next-gen assistant but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Any help is much appreciated.

To be honest im not even sure if pixelify is causing it, I uninstalled it and restarted my device and still it refuses to work. But live transcript works flawlessly. Really confused why I'm having this issue.
