Let me know what you guys think!
Update 7/25/2102: I released a new version today guys. I added a fullscreen mode and a bunch of custom frames. Enjoy!
Update 8/4/2012: I pushed out another new version today. I added Non-Mirror Mode and made a few tweaks to the layout of the menus. There is now the ability to choose themes and I also added a dedicated link to NexusTablets.net in my info dialog. Snapshots coming soon. Hope you like it!
Update 8/25/2012: Two new versions up on the market, free and paid. I added control settings for exposure and white balance. Made a whole slew of custom icons. Rearranged the GUI a little. Try it out on your other devices!
Update 9/9/2012: Tweaked the code to better handle resizing the camera preview. It should fill the screen on most if not all devices now. Please let me know if it's not. I also improved the way the app handles error and also added a button for reporting bugs in the developer info section. Unfortunately, these updates won't improve the experience any for Nexus7 users, but it should work on more devices now so give it a try!
Update 9/22/2012: Added snapshot mode to the paid version, Unlocked all frames for free version, Added Spanish and German language support, Improved bug reporting. Enjoy!
Update 10/14/2012: Increased supported languages. German, Spanish, French, Korean, and Japanese.
Update 11/2/2012: Photo booth mode, zoom controls, improved zoom and exposure controls, camera settings saved, help screen and more!
Update 11/14/2012: Black/White screen on launch issue fixed, 4.2 supported
Update 1/18/2013: Amazon Appstore version added, Kindle Fire HD supported
Update 2/1/2013: Frame Add-On Packs, Portrait/Landscape Mode, Ability to use front or back camera, Smaller app size, Bug fixes
Update 2/28/2013: Images on Google Play Store and Amazon Appstore have been updated. All supported languages have accompanying appstore imagery.
Update 5/4/2013: Pause Mode, Pinch to zoom, Added more localized app screenshots in various screen sizes
Update 9/21/2013: Changes to info dialogs, New themes, Flip Mode (Vertical), Adjust snapshot size, Added Arabic translations
Update 8/17/2014: Added max brightness option, Double tap to pause, Extra widths for low-light frames
Great job! (Damn I look good)

Yes! I'm thinking kaleidoscope patterns. Wacky mirrors are definitely in the works. I pushed out a new version today! Check it out.
App works great, THANKS!
I installed this app out of curiosity if it exhibited the issue with the stock camera being very choppy under not ideal lighting conditions. Unfortunately, it has the same issue. I was hoping it was just the camera app but it must be something with the software. I doubt it's a hardware issue. I've seen others complain about it, but just to confirm, everyone gets the low fps in non bright light right?
Regarding your app, you might want to add the ability to change the lighting type. Seems to be auto, which is fine but users might want to change that.

Yeah. I noticed that as well. Strange. Thanks for the suggestions. I think the lighting can be easily implemented.

What I'd like to know is if custom roms have the same issue. If so, it may be hardware (but I still doubt that) but if other roms exhibit this and it's not a hardware issue, it may require an update to the linux kernel. I'm surprised google released it as is with them promoting google hangouts.
Hope this is resolved soon.
Hey guys. I put out a small update that increases the resolution at which the image is displayed resulting in a much clearer picture. I also made an adjustment to the positioning of the image to closer replicate a mirror. Enjoy!
Put out a major update today! Name changed and supported on all 4.0+ devices now!!
How about some more advanced things like iso and shutter speed control. That'd be cool to have but I don't know how hard it is to implement.

Updated! Enjoy!
its a very nice app.. thx..
Forgive my ignorance, but I don't seem to understand how this differs from the camera app itself... the image in the camera app is inverted the same as the image in this app.
Can anyone explain what I appear to be missing?
I would actually be interested in a way to have the image appear correctly on the screen. The inverted image makes apps like Google goggles virtually unusable because words/barcodes are backwards.

there is mirror mode and non-mirror mode, so u have both choices..
and which camera app were u referring to?
for this app, its advantages include, imho, simplicity and minimum permissions required..

Curious
I was also wondering why there is no portrait mode for skype... From other posts I understand there should be a portrait layout for tablets...
If we show some interest in the Skype community enquiry, we might get an official staff response. I'm sorry, I cannot post links yet but the post I'm referring to is titled "Skype not respecting device orientation on Nexus 7" on the official Skype community forums.
I Skype every Sunday , it works Fab on my n7 . I'm not rooted with stock ROM . I have stock settings on both my n7 and Skype .

so no fix found yet? its really annoying when I keep my tab in portrait mode tap on Skype and goes on landscape mode!! I gotta notify them about this issue.
Uninstall the Skype app from the play store and install this custom version of Skype by theos0o. I found it a while back and have been using it since v12 as it features a lot of extra tweaks and fixes. It will solve your issue with landscape/portrait mode.

For v18, you must login once, then go into advanced options, scroll all the way down, enable rotation. On the first restart, skype will fc but after that, skype will work normally.

Linked v18.1 - if you're on v18 update via advanced settings menu or manually.

Today's Skype released version 3.1.0.6458 which is supposed to support portrait mode, but when I install it on my N7 it only displays in landscape mode and won't rotate to portrait mode. I looked for settings within the app, but could not find any. Anyone else tried this new release on their N7?
EDIT: Never mind... Once a video call is established rotation mode to portrait is unlocked.

This is not true in my case. When a video call is established, yes, it can start going in portrait mode, but it is not unlocked. After I end the video call, it goes back to landscape only.
Any other fix?

Brilliant thanks. Its was such a pain in the ass before this.
Again in my quest to achieve 10 posts (this is silly, but I see the point.)
Here's an APK of Launcher3 built from the android-4.4_r1 branch of AOSP. I have no idea if these work on builds that are not the ones they came from, but it works well enough on my build which it's based on.
Landscape acts just like Google Home for icons! There's no way around this outside of code changes somewhere. (Widgets are fine except they won't auto-resize. If you correct them to work in Landscape manually, that seems to stay)
I actually discovered something using a PA rom. At least for the google experience launcher, it is google search that is controling dpi, app layout and per app colors. Seems like it is an even tighter connection between the two than originaly thought.

Yes, they are distributed in the same APK most likely because of how Launcher3 implements the Now integration. They likely have to be the "Same" app for security reasons. It's still a stand-alone app if you build it from AOSP though.
I own Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and now in 2016 its showing its age, especially when on touchwiz based custom roms. Its not their fault since with time simple apps become more CPU and resources demanding and older devices struggle to keep up.One solution is to install mods/custom roms, especially AOSP/CM based roms.
I am currently sporting Resurrection Remix -Marshmallow v5.6.8 with Agni PureCM Kernel v4.5.3 and yeh i am so much happy with my setup.
But i do miss touchwiz features esp. my S pen features and its capabilities.
So this thread is to help out all those who are running aosp/cm based roms and are looking to get some s pen functionality on their roms.
My goal here is to provide best and closest possible alternatives to touchwiz stocks apps/features. Please note that there are many other alternatives than those mentioned here.they do provide somewhat similar funtionality or maybe even more in some cases, but arent similar to stock behaviour.
so 1st thing first i am highly thankful to guys at this thread that help me get started with spen features on cm/aosp based rom. Please do check out there thread, you will find it useful. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611415
1) for s command replacement there is this paid app called spen command.it works very well, though needs some tinkering to get the best out of it. link to thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/app-app-samsung-devices-provided-stylus-t3000448
link to official website: http://www.emandt.net/Android/SPenCommand/Website/
2)for screenshot we have a couple of options:-
a) using spen command app listed above, you can long tap spen on screen to screenshot it and then annotate, crop etc it.
b) use screenshot ultimate app on play store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.screenshotultimate&hl=en
Once installed open the app and let it decide best method to take screenshot. You also need to select trigger to screenshot, saving location and other settings as you see fit.once properly configured ,this app works like a charm.see this thread screenshot ultimate section to properly configure this app (text around the screenshot in post) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611415
After setting up the app, head to spen command app>side panel>settings>quick menu>scroll down to application shortcut tab>press on any blank shortcut no:>select app activities from menu>wait for list to populate>select screenshot ultimate>select viewEmptySearchButton.
3) for snote replacement ,i found squid app to be best . https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steadfastinnovation.android.projectpapyrus&hl=en
4) for photo annotation (in stock touchwiz gallery, opening image and then option menu gives you this feature to annotate on picture),there is no perfect solution as touchwiz but Skitch by evernote (officially discontinued now) is a close match. you need to share the image to annotate via share button in gallery apps. http://www1.zippyshare.com/v/32aPQrWB/file.html.
5) for s pen attach/detach sounds, use spen command with sound in ogg format.
6) touchwiz stock camera replacement. there are many good option
a) Camera fv-5 = https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flavionet.android.camera.pro&hl=en. NO VIDEO RECORDING CAPABILITIES
b) Lenovo Supercamera,my favorite one. There are many version . link to official thread and the version i use are here.
official link= http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665714
version i use= http://d-h.st/ZYB
c) Snap camera v8.1.0= this one had better HDR output than lenovo supercamera, but i face storage and saving problem in external sd card. Also i dont like video recording in this app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055140
7) touchwiz music = i prefer playerpro. but there are so many i wonder if any audiophile actually use stock app
8) radio app= spirit fm 2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/spirit-fm/app-spirit2-free-source-real-fm-radio-t2951455
9) action memo= i cant find the link so i will attach the one i am using.
10) another spen command app(PAID APP) alternative is Note Buddy(FREE). it requires CM spen addon(FREE) to be installed first.
link to note buddy= https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.spen_helper
link to cm spen addon= https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.cmspen2
you can also use this app called spen launcher to get air command like menu= https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steadfastinnovation.android.spenlauncher
these are the latest to date replacements for spen and touchwiz features for aosp/cm based roms. These are in no way perfect solutions and thus i urge you to help spread the word and help me in improving this article. if you know any better solutions/replacements please post in here.
i am still missing certain s pen and touchwiz features like smart select, smart stay and some others, but well you have to compromise on something to get something better.

Spen command does tht
I dunno why this app is misses here,
Can be added
Note buddy - free (great app to launch apps on removal spen and other apps)
REQUIRES
Cm - spen add-on(enables all apps to access spen features..
For example post memo has a built in option to launch on spen removal, cannot open without spen add on.
Cm Spen add-on does this.......
Great app....

Yes I am aware of that, but spen command doesn't require these addon to install first. Also it's provides a more stock note 2/note 3 like command functionality,
Building spen gestures and screenshot annotate is another feature.
Other features include spen pointer, spen detection, clipboard manager etc.
Overall I found spen command to be much better than note buddy

Very true but it is a paid app.....
There should be at least one good free app listed
Ive been using GMD SPen Control for a while now (paid app) and seeing that SPen Command is not even in the play store (looks a bit fishy to me)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34085846 (A Mod removed the play store link there so i wont post it here, just search for it)
Also for showing the S Pen Pointer at least CM has an option to enable a Mouse Cursor for the Stylus, i quite like it

well i have provided a direct link to official website for spen command app.so its not fishy or anything. there is also an active xda thread for spen command app(Link in OP).And just because it not on play store doesnt mean its fake.
I have tried GMD Spen app.although it provides a good funtionality ,it cant compete with feature set of spen command app and given both of these are paid app,i personally prefer spen command.
for pointer ,yes cm has mouse cursor for stylus, but a small dot for spen provided in spen command app is more pleasing
yeah i started reading a bit in the xda thread and i see the reason why it isnt listed on the play store. Too bad there is no trial Version, i would like to test it more extensively than for 48 hours to see how it integrates into everyday usage and how it compares to GMD Spen Control, but the developer made it pretty clear that he has no plans for a feature reduced trial version.
Also cant say that i like the automatic change feature for SELinux, for most of us its already set to permissive but thats a choice we make before flashing a rom or if we change it ourselves later on, changing it within the app feels kind of wrong (the way it looks without this feature the app would still be on the play store)
With fishy i didnt mean fake, its just strange to publish an app solely on their own website and only accepting paypal payments, maybe fishy wasnt the right word

i understand you. 48 hours in enough to get to know the worth of app.besides you can always get refund if you dont like.
just try it.i know you will like how closely it simulate air command in touchwiz rom.
many developers dont publish their app on play store either due to one reason or other. As long as there is an active xda thread and a complementary website, its good enough to trust that app is okay.

Hey thanks for this! I actually picked this up and from the Pixel XL forum and applied it to my Pixel "L".
I've mentioned this a few times already in different threads, but I think if there was a way to type in the two URL's for the Pixel L and XL - kind of like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel+pixel-xl
that would be REALLY helpful because I've found useful info on each forum that wasn't on the other, and vice versa.
Also, great work! Thank you
So just for clarity, is this essentially a Tasker easy mode? What is the difference between using regular and pro? Just removing the ads? I've installed and will play with it more in depth tomorrow.
I like your app, I paid for the pro version, well worth the money.=)
I use it to enable sync so I can turn it on and off on demand without using a custom ROM.

Tasker is an automation app, so the general app purpose is different, but from a "fire activity X" point of view you are right (btw. you can easily combine Tasker and QuickTile via the QuickTile Broadcast activity)
Regular vs. Pro:
- Same Features, BUT the number of Tiles are limited (3 vs. 10) and the number of activities per tile (3 vs. no limit) are limited. So you can use each and every feature and test it via the regular version. I think, most people will never use more than 3 Tiles and more than 3 activities per tile.
- No Ads

Fantastic breakdown. I'm actually excited to give this a whirl.
@ascsa bro
Thanks alot for this fantastic app. Its works like a charm in my Unrooted One Plus 3 Nougat 7.0. U saved my Alert Slider button and volume button. Only two toggles missing is Screenshot and Reboot. I need root for that so no problem.. Once again thanks alot...
Thanks @ascsa,
I like this app a lot. There's one feature I would like to see or it may be more than one to accomplish it.
Sort of in line with the cycles part of the app, I'd like to be able to long press a tile and have it let me pick my action, say for instance in reboot, hold tile, select from list of options...Recovery,Bootloader,System, etc. Don't know if thats possible, but with the app long press menus it might be something to look into. The way the cycles thing works now unless Im misunderstanding it is that it will just go from one set of instructions to the other without giving you a choice.
Something else that would be nice would be the ability to convert any QuickTile to a widget so you could put it on the homescreen. Or a shortcut , that way you could put a few into a folder and pick your poison that way.
Otherwise a great addition to my Pixel.

Yes, you understand the cycles correct.
Longpress and multiple tiles does not work nicely together and the app long press menus are something different. Currently i am not aware of any possibility to implement such a solution, but the API is new (and could change with future releases) and sometimes you can hack around restrictions. However, the overall use case (let users pick some action) is interesting and I have one or two ideas how to implement it, I will have a deeper look at it, eventually.
Widget and shortcut support is on my to-do list, but it´s not the apps main purpose ....
btw. I use a QuickTile as container for some rarely used activities : put your rarely used activities all into one tile, deactivate them (so they do not all fire when you fire the tile) and then you can fire a single activity via longpress the activity (run) in the quicktile app .... not the most user friendly approach, but I use this frequently.

Update 1.5.1
Update 1.5.1 is out in the wild now (--> Google Play)
Usually the Nexus (now Pixel?) devices, stock Android and SuperSu (for root) are my baseline for development.
In the past, a lot of manufacturer roms as well as custom roms implemented a lot of workarounds, non-standard APIs and even changed some of the standard APIs. It was, and still is, a support nightmare. However, the 1.5.1 update contains a compatibility mode for non-supersu root apps and fixes some of the horrible custom rom workarounds (looking at you, CM ). I certainly can not fix all the workaround and bugs in all custom (and manufacturer!) roms but 1.5.1 should fix at least some of the common ones. Especially the root activities should now work much more stable on CM.
Update 1.5.1
- Advanced custom rom support
- Minor tweaks and fixes
