Hi,
i'm using the shield model 2017 (16GB) with Shield Experience 6.0 (rooted dev-image).
I was getting rid of the OTA 6.1 update notification so i was looking for a way to disable ota on the shield.
Unfortunately i have only found a solution that freezes the system ota apk.
Here is another way:
block or modify the dns-request for the following fqdn:
ota.nvidia.com
Hope that helps someone

I bought my Fire TV early this year and rooted it. Now after a software update it's no longer rooted. I would like to reinstall an older (rootable) version of the OS and block automatic updates. Is there an apk available?
Can't downgrade without root... You may be SOL. One of the first things to do after getting root is to block updates. I've disabled the service as well as blocking the url's on my router.
Check your current version against the firmware page on aftvnews dot com and see, but I don't think you're going to like what you see.
Towelroot is the root method, it should still be on your box after a firmware upgrade.
Hi, I rooted my firetv out of the box and managed to block firmware updates after gaining root.
My problem is I haven't had time to manually update to the latest rooted firmware nor have I setup clockwork mod. Now I'm getting errors when trying to update sling tv to the latest version to use the app.
So what I'm asking is can I simply reenable over the updates with one of the remote apps and update to the latest version and everything should be fine?
Is there any reason for my to keep root considering my use case is kodi in home streaming and sling box? Would I be missing out on anything cool?
Has amazon modified the home screen to include something silly like banner ads since the launch of the fire tv?
Thanks for any advice!
Install clockworkmod and bootmenu, then update latest firmware. Sling will then update .
Could someone point out the steps for me to get my newly bought Firephone working without the fear of bricking it or loosing root?
I want to achieve:
- root
- block updates
- install latest possible Amazon Firmware
- ability to install CM11 later
If possible please point me to the relevant threads here in the right order.

Most of the info is here, you may have to check elsewhere for blocking updates though.
Latest firmware can always be installed via OTA or by downloading the update file from here http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201607550 and placing it in the root of your storage, then going into device settings and selecting check for updates, in which case it'll detect the file.
i recommend holding off on doing an Over The Air update as 4.6.6 seems to be giving users some issue, I've seen reports of not being able to root so it might be best to download 4.6.3 until things are clarified.
The walkthrough in my signature should cover all of that. Romario is right about 4.6.6 for now.
I just connected my FireTV1 with 5.0.5.1 on it. Since there hasn't been any real progress (that I know of) concerning the rooting of that device, I thought I might as well update it to the most recent version. Or should I just leave it like it is? Right now it does not get updates due to that adb trick that works up until 5.0.5.1.
Any recommendations?
Update it. I gave up hope for root on my fire TV1's. Last I knew you you could block updates on 5.2.6.0 via uninstall shell. My hope is that a new update will come out and have a easy vulnerability.
I searched the web back and forth but all I could find is people asking how to get root access or how to remove bloatware.
Sadly with no answers anywhere.
The TCL P20 series recently got an update to Nougat, the same file appearently is also valid for several other of their smart TV's.
From my experiements it looks the TV neither has a recovery nor any usable ADB access.
Firmware files are supplied as a PKG and although Binwalk can extract some of it the files can't be opened.
The bigger files all have the SIT extension, making me think it is Stuffit archive but version I tried is unable to extract them.
So I guess real custom roms are out of the question.
But shouldn't it be possible to at least gain root access so ad blockers could be installed or proper backup solutions?
Not to mention some nice apps that won't work without root access...
Is anyone here working on TCL firmwares or knows a way to provide root access without bricking the TV?

Click to collapse
install and use adguard for android it creates a vpn locally and filters out adverts
Yeah custom firmware would have been great. Shame TCL just don't open up bootloader s for their customers anyway.
Hey everyone, have a tcl 60p20us, are there any updates or firmware updates for this available. Still running version 9, kinda feeling left out as they have announced 12
