FYI - Careful using our chargers on other phones!! - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

So my wife isn't so into the whole rooting and software hacking that I am so we upgraded her to the V30 a couple days ago.
Last night we're on the couch and she grabbed my p2xl charger to bump her phone. Neither of us thought much about it.
20 minutes later her phone is crazy hot!! Kinda freaked me out. We immediately unplugged and let the phone cool off.
I'd have been less surprised on an older phone but was kinda shocked that this happened with a V30. Kinda figured they'd be very similar in terms of how they took a charge.
Anyway, just a heads up. Apparently our chargers are more powerful than some other phones can handle.

Damn. Good on you that you were quick to notice.
And yeah "our chargers are more powerful than other phones" but it takes them FOREVER to fully charge the phone they came with. Fail.

i have been doing the Benson approved thing on amazon, if it doesn't openly state there is the 56k resistor for safety inline and most likely issues like yours, i will not buy. goto his site and see the list of cables and adapters hes tested. i will be making an addition device off my Rpi's to see what i can do for quick testing . for fun.
for now, invest in a label maker, where you have to read the cable type before you can plug it in. im doing that with my dongles...huh huh, he said dongles.

That's interesting. What's the V30 charger rated at? Because ours is good for 5v/3a and 9v/2a. I would figure the V30 would be one or the other too.

that's what i figured too... was pretty surprised with the heating issue.
EDIT: So Inlooked at the output of both chargers... the p2xl oem and lgv30 oem chargers have the same exact output ratings... so i have no idea why my charger made her phone so hot. maybe a cable issue?

Did you use the cable that came with the Pixel or some third party USB C cable?

you do know
that v30 uses qc3
and the pixel 2 uses pd
and they are NOT COMPATIBLE AT ALL that could cause big problems
so don't plug this into that ever
in the future all things include qc4 will work with pd
but not qc3

Is there any reason this car charger wouldn't work?

This OEM Motorola micro-USB charger is supposedly rated 4.75-5.25V 950mA. Is there any reason it wouldn't work for the Vibrant for a high-draw situation (in-car display-on with navigation)?

Should work. Some posters say that 1amp is not enough for in car nav and charging. They recommend getting the dealextreme 2amp blackberry charger.

I use that one - it works. It couldn't keep up with wardrive last night though - drained 3% during a 20 minute drive. Haven't checked the charge current yet, maybe it's not pinned out properly for high-rate charging.

Two meanings -- the app I was using, wardrive and the actual activity -- driving around, logging wifi access points with GPS. Very battery intensive, with the constant GPS updates and wifi scans. Here's the outcome -- https://wigle.net/gps/gps/Map/onlinemap2/
Anyway, probably a good comparison to running Nav and maybe some music at the same time.

Got it, thanks. So you're saying a 950 mA isn't enough.. hmm. I have a power inverter, which has a 5V USB output providing 1A. Wonder if that would be a little better.
I was going to recommend this charger, since when using nav and music at the same time, my battery pretty much stayed the same or gained a few percentage, but now I wouldn't recommend it at all since it started burning today. Just my opinion.
I'm gonna buy this charger from Amazon. It's basically the same one you posted, but from Amazon themselves. Since I got prime membership, might as well buy from them and have a piece of mind sine they got good customer service. Oh, there was one reviewer that had this charger with the Vibrant and said it was good, so yeah.

I was going to ask the same thing. Not encouraging for me, since I have that charger too... Bought from Amazon of course, but unless the ebay auction was for a fake then it doesn't really matter where it came from.
Anyway, it seems like a decent inexpensive charger to me. I'll have to try nav alone on it next time -- wardriving is very battery intensive, so not really a fair test.

Makes sense now... thanks
Regardless of what these charges are rated, my guess is the phone will pull around 800mA. 1.1A if the phone thinks it's a wall charger.
Open the file /sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_chg_current with Astro or some other file manager and you'll see the current being pulled.
In the same location, the file charging_source gives the following values:
0 - no power source
1 - usb power source (with limited current per batt_chg_current)
2 - wall power source with higher current in batt_chg_current)
The car chargers I've tried are recognized as USB sources only. Even when taping off the data pins and plugging into a USB port on a computer the phone will still recognize the source as USB. Which means the charge rate is lower, regardless of the charger's rating.

Preview, Choetech quick charge 3.0 accessories

Hi All,
Got a car charger and multi port charger coming from choetech, I've used their stuff in the past and they are up there with anker as 3rd part cable companies go.
heres an early preview of them, They are looking for beta testers so you can sign up here: http://www.choetech.com/Support-review.html
Be interesting to see what these are like with the htc 10, i will let everyone know more once i receive the items.
@Phil750123, Thanks for sharing this information, I'll be glad to test the car charger!
I actually have the qc3 wall charger. So far it's charging pretty fast on my s7. Agree with other posters that the quality seems really good. Will know how it compares to stock when I get the HTC 10.
Yeah their quality is great. They were the first to come out with a good USB type C wall charger for the Nexus 6p
They're just a little bit logo happy.
RoHS eh idk. Fake CE.. And don't even get me started on that FCC logo.. Someone needs to tell them who/what FCC is..
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable.

Why on earth would a charger need that..
To me they just look like another chinese manufacturer.
Atleast have the brains to use appropriate logos so they'd be semi passable, like I don't know TÜV or UL and so forth..
And, of course, they're nowhere to be seen on Qualcomm's certified accessories list. Not even any QC2.0..
P.S. I did apply for testing, they sent me an email, I replied. Let's see if they send something lol. I'm not a liar so I'm gonna be honest if I do get their stuff for review
Yer they look decent I already have some of their usb c cables, I've just ordered the qc 3 portable charger from them aswell so il review them all and see how get on. But yer they make no mention of favourable reviews they just want a review, which means they are confident in their products which hopefully means they are good
Nice, I have some on the way, they look good.
I actually asked this question at qualcomm but they wouldn't answer, maybe someone knows the answer here, hopefully it is not too confusing.
I was wondering about the QC 3.0 technology chargers. My question is, say I buy a wall charger or a car charger that supports QC 3.0); will it charge my type C phone (say an LG G5 or an HTC 10) as fast with the QC 3.0 technology using a type A to type C cable? I know if I charge a type C device using only type c it will get me faster charges, but if I do type A to type C (with QC 3.0) with the right charger will I still get the best results?
Thanks.

type A to type c wil reduce charging times even with 3.0. I went with these cables and for a car charger I got this one both should give the rapid charging.

Thanks for clarifying, I wasn't sure. I think the HTC 10 charger comes with 3.0 quick charge, but it is a type A to type C.
I actually just got my QC 3.0 Powerbank from Choetech and I love it. Charges everything fast just like the spec allows for, and has a great build quality. One small thing I like is that when fast charging, the first light to the left switches from blue to green to indicate that. I just appreciate the assurance that my device is gonna be juiced up quick. The only thing that's odd about it is that you need to press the power button for charging to begin. I'd prefer it to just start when a device is connected, but that's my personal preference.
Overall I still really like the thing, great to have a powerbank that charges just as fast as my wall charger, before I was stuck with one that didn't have and QC capability. I'll include some pics below.
If anyone has any questions about it, let me know. Should also be getting a 6 port QC 3 charger from them soon too, will post on here when I do.

I was looking at this on Amazon last night, but they don't seem to be on Qualcomm's official partner list, which makes me a bit nervous for my battery (which I'm not super impressed with anyway so far - one of the reasons I was looking at the power bank). Do either the phone or the charger get hot while charging? The HTC QC3 charger seems to prevent overheating.

They aren't, but speeds have been up to par with what I'd expect from QC3 so far so I haven't had problems with it. The charger gets warm after a bit, as does the phone (warmer than with stock charger) but also nowhere near as much as the M9 would when charging. Don't know if you've used that before, but when charging regularly it would get so hot that it had to stop, and that's even with screen off. It was crazy bad at charging, which is a thing I never thought I'd say about a 2015 flagship....so I'm glad the 10 is better in that regard, at least. I'd imagine almost any third party charger is gonna make the phone hotter than the OEM one will, but I didn't have a problem with the heat it generated, overall.

Htc 10 burned me and powered off...?

So as the title suggests I had a bad experiences with my htc 10. I upgraded or should I say side graded from my nexus 6p. (I'm gonna do the captain 2 phones life for a while) I promptly put my htc 10 to charge over night with my nexus 6p charger. Stupidly thinking it's USB C so what could go wrong. I woke up to a freeky hot htc that actually burned me before powering itself of. Probably a safety feature.
So the question is : does anybody know if there is a real difference between the two chargers and technologys?and what that differens means for the regular consumers. And should I be looking for a special type of cable or something, as I had to do when hunting for a second USB c cable to my nexus. Remember the whole debacle of the bad USB c cables on amazon.
Have I damaged my new htc in any way?
Side note is that it's working fine now that I charged it up again with the included charger.
Note to self: Use the HTC charger for awhile.
This is exactly why I only use the HTC charger to charge mine. Figured something like this would happen.

Pretty sure all phones will charge ungodly slow connected to a computer. USB2.0 outputs 5V 0.5A while USB3.0 outputs 5V 0.9A. It will be slower than any slow charger.
I have charged my 10 every single time with my OEM Nexus 6P charger (albeit with a i-Orange 6.6ft cable) and have had zero issues.
You don't need to stick with the HTC charger. The phones today decide hope much and when they want power. If the OP's charger has been working fine with his 6P then i see no reason why it would cause his 10 to overheat.
To the OP. You most likely have a defective 10. I would exchange it ASAP before something worse happens.

Not yet... That's what I'm a bit worried about. I'm not super happy with the battery life so far. I've narrowed it down to three options
1. I'm coming from the nexus 6p so it could just be that I'm used to a larger battery.
2. The htc is still in its first week of use, so the battery life may yet improve.
3. The affair with the nexus 6p charger damaged the battery in some way.

Warm and relatively hot is in my opinion the norm when talking about a full Metal body phone. It was the same with the M7, M8 and nexus 6p.

Do you have the quick charge option on your computer. My experience is that most phones are freeky slow when connected to a computer, if you some how can't tell the computer that's it should charge the device not just power it
Yea, something seems wrong there with the phone. Exchange it if you can, like someone said. I use my HTC charger at home, and an Anker branded cable in my car with an Anker quick charge car adapter and no problems at all even though it isn't an HTC product.

Yep, definitely a problem that folks need to be aware of. Bottom line, only use the charger that was supplied with the HTC 10. In fact, a warning about using only the HTC 10 charger is etched on the back of the device, although the print is tiny, but it's there.

HTC uses their own custom version of QuickCharge 3.0 or something like that from what I remember reading. It cannot just plug into any standard charger and work properly. It is really dumb, but that is most likely the cause of this serious issue. The HTC 10 also goes out of spec with higher voltage than USB-C allows for because of this custom setup HTC uses.
i have used aukey and anker cables and chargers for my G2, G5, and HTC10 without any issue + the HTC10 native stuff... no issues.
no negative affects charging or maintaining are charge, however i am comparing it to myself only.

They aren't using a custom setup.. They're using Quick Charge 3.0. Which Isn't compliant with the standard usb-c spec. Which essentially means, dont use a nexus 6p or pixel charger and thats it. There are far more devices out that are quick charge 3.0 compatible, and those are the accessories you want to look for. Not the usb-c spec. Any standard charger will actually work just fine. It's only the usb-c standard you would want to ignore. Literally every device manufacturer other then the current nexus lineup uses QC. It's more of a standard then the usb-c spec.

You'd need to account for every app that could've been running over night and eliminate those from the possible troublemakers before you could say it was a problem with the 6p cable which is in spec for usb-c.
you really wont notice right now if the overheat damaged the device if it still turns on. But lithium ion battery's dont like to get hot. they will start to degrade and the battery will hold less of a charge. you could RMA it because its under the manufacturer warranty but you will end up with a "refurbished" device. (you might get lucky and get a new due to how new the device is)
edit:
this is from a personal experience. i RMA'd 4 rezounds all 4 were "certified like new" (crap) before i went with insurance and they sent be a different device.

I tend to stick with Anker myself, since they have gotten great reviews from Benson Leung (the google engineer that's been reviewing these cables):
https://plus.google.com/collection/s0Inv
Since crappy cables can hurt your devices, I'm sticking with what works. Not sure how the Spigen ones rate (heck didn't even know they made them).
Here's a great list of thorough and consistent reviews of various USB-C cables available on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A25GROL6KJV3QG/ref=cm_cr_rdp_pdp
The original Spigen cables were not compliant but after Benson Leung's review they have fixed their issue and have received his approval.

i've been using a third party cable and charger with my replacement Note 7 for a few days now, no problems. tbh, i used that same cable/charger with the pre-recall Note 7 too for a week until the recall notice happened (at which point, i swapped over to samsung's official charger).
i don't think it matters. the problem with the fire appears to be totally the fault of samsung's batteries, and nothing else.
I've been using this cable with no issues. A pack of 3 sells for US$11, and they appear to be well made and fully compliant. I don't have fast charging enabled on my (replaced) Note 7 ... not because I'm worried about a flameout, but because I think fast charging reduces the longevity of the battery.
I'm using the Aukey braided cables. No issues here.
I'm using these two :

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B014WVZX72/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Both are excellent quality I highly recommend them.

I do not reckon or trying to claim anything here, but truth to be told, my family members and I, also many of my friends have been using 3rd party cables and chargers for years, no issue on battery so far... But when I have problem with the charger, it was when it no longer able to transfer consistent power to my phone. For cable, the problems that I faced so far were it cannot transfer data between my phone and computer, as well as it was inefficient in transferring the charge from the charger to my phone. Such behaviours can happened to original charger and cable. That said, I always make sure I picked 3rd party charger and cable which are not "too cheaply" made...

Looking for good wireless charger ~$20

Any suggestions? New to the wireless charging. 1st and last device I had that supported it was the Nexus 6 and with a case it didn't work so I gave up.

Best buy has a bundle deal with the pixel stand and it knocks the stand down to 59 dollars with a few other eligible bundle items.

Any suggestions? New to the wireless charging. 1st and last device I had that supported it was the Nexus 6 and with a case it didn't work so I gave up.

I've had good luck with choetech products in the past. they have several wireless chargers, haven't tried any of the newer ones but they've pretty much been my go-to since the 6p and switching to usb c
This will be my first wireless charger.
Do we need to buy a certain type/spec or just buy any old wireless charger off of Amazon?
I'd like to find a slim matt-style to lay on my bedroom nightstand to just dump my phone on top of when I go to bed.
So in that sense, I'm fine with super slow charging.

it can do 10w, but in that case the older 5w ones will do. that said, back in the Nexus days I loved having the phone at an angle as a bedside clock (in fact, that's what my n7 is still primarily used for lol) so you may want to consider a stand charger.
So look for a 5W or 10W charger (or something in between), okay cool, thanks.
seriously yeah, I know that little about wireless.
Look for fast charge support and decide on a form factor. The small circles usually have a smaller sweet spot and by being smaller themselves make it easier for your phone to get bumped off of charge by kids, the dog, whatever, bumping the surface the charger is on. I'd consider spending a little more and getting a more stable platform rather than go with the small stuff. As said above if you want to see the phone on charge then you're going to need a vertical charger and you're going to need to decide if you want it in landscape or portrait and get a charger designed for that. If you're looking for a charger for use at a desk or in a working environment I would certainly lean toward upright so you can used your calculator and other tools while on charge. If you just want to flop it down to charge without any use of the phone then the lay flat versions tend to be cheaper.
Just bought two to try out on Amazon. Going to test them out on my Pixel 3 Xl and my ladies iPhone xs. Both chargers were under $20 each.

Caseology has a fast 10w wireless charger for 50% off on Amazon with a promo code, comes to about 20 bucks.....check my Caseology thread in accessories (it's a circular charger though, not the stand type)
I've bought this one and their wireless car charger and they both work great! I'd recommend them.

I just bought a pair of Nanami wireless stands from Amazon, 10 watts. It does do a fast charge, phone says charging rapidly. $26.00 with the charging brick, $16.00 without. I'm using the brick at my PC desk, and it's plugged into a 45 watt charger in my living room. Runs icy cool and really works well.
I say icy cool because I have an older Qi charger. The pad and the phone ran pretty warm which concerned me a bit.
The stand puts it at a nice viewing angle and makes the phone quite usable while charging.
This is NOT a paid endorsement
Lots of positive reviews.
There are standup wireless dock stations??
I need to Google this!
I have this one, it works and since I use it at night I don't care how long it takes to charge my phone.
AP has an article that says the Pixel 3 won't charge at more than 5W unless you have the Pixel stand. That's pretty lame on Google's part. It says the phone reports "charging rapidly" but really isn't. See here .
All of you might as well save your money and just get a decent one limited to 5w because that's what Google limited the pixel to for 3rd part wireless chargers
For everyone with wireless chargers can you kindly install Ampere from the playstore to confirm if any of them are charging above 500Mah ?

I can confirm the pixel stand is charging faster than 500Mah.

I can confirm that the Pixel Stand charges faster, but not the other fast wireless chargers that I have. The Seneo wireless charger that I have at my desk at work is only charging at ~500mA in spite of the fact that the phone indicates that it is "charging rapidly". I sincerely hope that Google fixes this and quickly.
