Anyone has Microphone problem since October patch? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Well so I have the issue where microphone would not work sometimes, yeah I know Pixels have the hardware microphone issues but I am not sure! For me suddenly the mic would stop working! No sound in videos, no sound picked up from audio recording apps, no google assistant response etc., but the good thing is phone call audio always works! So I let a sound decibel metre app run for half an hour to see whether the audio is breaking in middle, and no, there is no breakage in middle, so when it works it works, it doesn't stop in middle, but when I wake the phone up after say a one hour standby then it stops responding. Sometimes a reboot fixes it, sometimes it simply starts working after a while!
I am on stock ROM, rooted with SuperSU and using suhide etc., could this be a software issue?

My mic stopped working in Sept or Oct. Also connect a headset and audio still plays from the speaker. But phone somewhat knows a headset was connected, the music will stop playing from the speaker when I unplug the headset. After Oct update I a reset, issue persist.
Oh, and I can't use the phone as a phone. If I answer or call, the phone hangs and reboots.

No issues here, since it works sometimes, means that no hardware issue, try a factory reset.

I'm having the same problem with mine. I have to reboot and let it settle for a few min after then it seems to work fine for a while until it happens again.
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk

Are you using the call recorder app ? I find that to be the culprit.
Next time, it stops working, just ls -l /dev/snd, and see whether one file is with permission 600. ( I could not recall the detailed filename now ).
After changing the permission to 660 of that file, everything will work once again.

Major BUG with GPS and audio playback possibility

I was using GPS navigation on google nav and playing music through the HTC media player and GPS signal wouldnt stick if i was moving, only if i was standing still. Something is preventing this multitasking. I need someone to test if it is just me or my ROM or these specific apps. I am running fresh .2 ROM btw.
UPDATE
GPS breaks when playing music through the external speaker. The signal will be lost, or really spotty until you stop playing music. HTC has not commented on the issue. Does anyone know why this is happening? Is it possible to fix?
yep i am using stock unrooted evo and i get same problem i was playinf music thru stock player and go to google nav and it wont find gps signal after pausing music it finds signal them i turn the music bak on and it looses signal
Haven't tried the stock music player, but I listen t
o podcast all the time while using the gps.
i think its a bug in the htc stock player i tried same thing with doubletwist player and get no issues
edit
i got lost signal on gps also with doubletwist now seems like a bug with google nav
Could you post your ROMs if rooted and also has anyone tried Sprint Nav? I will go and grab a sprint nav apk and test when I get a chance. This is very inconvenient and I am curious as to why it isnt working.
Uhhh, no problems here, playing mp3 from SD card using stock music player and got a GPS lock in a matter of seconds.
Latest radio
fresh .2
-Edit- Mine works sometimes but mostly doesn't, so yeah bug is present
anyone hear anything from htc about this, posted on their site and twitter and didnt hear anything, maybe i should call about this issue.
I don't use the stock music player app for anything but I experience this exact issue when trying to use pandora and the GPS. As soon as i shut pandora off it picks up signal again.
NEW FIND, any app, GPS and MUSIC through the speaker causes GPS signal to be lost. It works while using headphones but not the speaker.
Wow, is this a hardware or software issue?
You know, I actually forgot about this for a while, there has been no official word on this bug, and I havent heard anyone knowing why this happens.
I never even thought to try running my gps without music, I just thought it had a very crappy gps antenna or something. I have yet to try it without music to verify this as well, but tomorrow I probably will test it out.
Just a wild stab at the dark, but maybe the magnet in the external speaker interferes with the GPS antennae? Not too sure about that though....
Hmmm, would be interesting if the placement of the speaker and the GPS is the actual problem, I really hope not though. The problem doesn't occur when the GPS app uses the speaker or you get a notification playing on the speaker though, maybe the duration is short enough to not loose the signal? I emailed HTC about this issue, didn't have time to call them about it.
I can verify this, did a two hour trip last night and didn't lose the signal once with the music not playing.
Yes, it's because of the speakers
This is a funny problem. Something about the speakers is interfering with the GPS reception. It's not just that the speakers are on, but how loud it is. The louder the sound, the worse the reception.
I'm running the stock ROM. I used GPS Status and the stock music player. I played a song that is fairly constant in loudness, and noticed that as I turned up the volume, I would start loosing GPS satellites, and then as I turned the down the volume, I would get more GPS satellites.
Update: I tried the same test out on my Hero, and it definitely doesn't have the problem.
Ha, HTC already knows about it. And it doesn't look like they're gonna do anything about it, and this guys reply probably explains why my car charger takes forever to charge my phone.
Dear "My Name",
I understand that the GPS Signal will be lost is you use your device GPS with Music playing. As the device pulls more resources from the battery, the phone may become warm. The device has a built in sensor that registers the amount of heat the phone is generating and will shut down some features as the device heats up. Normally the Charging port will be turned off first, then the various radios will be disabled such as GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. If you are experiencing an issue while using multiple features of the device at the same time, I recommend that you stop using one or more of the programs and see if the problem persists (As you have). I do apologize for any inconvenience that you may have experienced.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number "My Ticket Number".
Sincerely,
Jeffery

If that's indeed the case, one can try underclocking to prevent the heat buildup.

Nope, HTC is just throwing something silly. What they describe may be true, but playing music doesn't instantly generate heat, nor does that heat instantly disipate once you turn down the volume, or plug in a headset.
As I tested above, you can slowly degrade your reception by turning the volume up slowly. This is clearly a different issue, and it is a reasonable inference that there is some sort of interference between the speaker and GPS.
Also, if HTC insists, you can prove them wrong by keeping the phone plugged in and showing that it is still charging the battery even when the GPS looses signal.
I experienced a series of reboots on my phone this weekend while driving and using the phone via a bluetooth headset. Simultaneously I was attempting to use Google navigation. I typically could connect to my caller and then would reboot within 10 seconds or so. This happened three times before I was able to figure out that the GPS connection was a culprit and temporally disabled GPS while using the phone.
Lamest part and this isn't the first time this has occurred! On the original firmware shipped from HTC I had a few identical crashes that I have only now realized were because of this combination of GPS+bluetooth.
Right now I'm running a simple OTA update + root using toast's method.

Bluetooth and/or Pandora problems?

Is anyone having problems with their bluetooth locking up? I am getting various issues that all seem to be related to the bluetooth. I routinely connect to a Jabra Cruiser Bluetooth speakerphone in my car and stream music, mostly Pandora but sometimes google music or other players.
This morning I turned on the speakerphone and immediately watchdog told me that bluetoothd and pandora services were both stuck at 40% each. I hadn't even launched pandora since the last reboot. Had to restart the phone.
Other times I will go to turn on the speakerphone and it will not connect. I try to turn bluetooth on and off. It shuts off fine but hangs turning on. Usually about 30 seconds later the entire phone becomes unresponsive and I have to restart it by holding power. Putting it in and out of flight mode does the same thing.
Still other times I will shut the speakerphone off or walk out of range and the bluetooth icon on the phone continues to show connected. Sound may or may not come out of the phone and the volume control says bluetooth audio. Again restarting bluetooth locks up the phone and requires a restart.
Lastly sometimes bluetoothd and/or pandora will randomly go haywire and hang with high CPU utilization.
Anybody else seeing any or all of these symptoms or have any ideas. I am rooted and have the 2.3.6 update. Pretty sure the problems were occuring before the update, not sure about before the root.
Thanks...
Yes I am having similar problems when using bluetooth to connect to my home based panasonic DECT phone system. A reboot of the phone does repair the issue. It seems to occur every 24-72 hours, if the phone is not rebooted. My blackberry connects via bluetooth to the same panasonic phone system without issue. I suppose it could be a problem between multiple bluetooth devices. I suspect it is a SW bug though, because a simple reboot has always resolved the problem for me.
Do you have pandora installed? I uninstalled it yesterday and haven't had the problem yet. Did plenty of streaming with Google Music.
One thing I forgot to add. When the device says that is connected and sending out audio over the bluetooth, such as music, but it is really not, I get a moment of audio out of the built in speakers before it turns off.

Yes....we do have pandora installed...and now that you mention it; I believe it is quite possible that we only have the problem when we run pandora after a reboot. Because for the past few days there has been no issue. And I believe during this time I have not been using pandora. If it is Pandora...hopefully a future pandora bug fix will repair the issue.
Since I uninstalled Pandora I have not had a single lockup in almost two weeks. I guess I'll message Pandora and see if they'll fix it.
Edit - Looks like they may have fixed it. Crossing fingers.
What's New
What's in this version:
The Search hard key now takes you to the Pandora station search screen

Audio playback stopping/muting?

I'm having issues with the playback on my N5X when using headphones w/ remote. Bluetooth seems to work without issue.
The problem is, randomly, and usually within a minute of starting audio and putting the screen to sleep, audio playback will stop. Once I unlock the phone, it looks as if the OS still thinks audio is playing. If I toggle the play/pause button, I can get it to restart audio, but it does not pick up at the point where I heard the audio stop -- as if it continued playing while "muted". This occurs in at least 2 separate apps, which is why i'm thinking it's either an Android bug or possible a HW issue.
Anyone seen this?
Well I guess that answers my question...

I've had a problem playing audio using Podcast Addict over bluetooth, but it's not similar to what you're describing. In my case, playback just pauses randomly for a second or two, then continues. This can happen after 1 minute of playback, or 20 minutes. I'm assuming at this point that my problem is with the app, android 6.0 is still very new and some apps may have problems (like camera apps flipping everything upside-down).
Exactly the same issues with my Nexus 5X... Deezer and Podcast Addict. Music starts but as soon as the display is turned off, approx. one minute later the sound stopps but when I turn the phone on again the player looks like still playing... Very annoying... Have you changed someting like the "lock when power button is pushed" option ore anything which is connected to the display?
Same here with Spotify... I find that I have to unplug and replug the headphones, hit pause, then play again. :/ Have you tried disabling Doze for your music player? It may have something to do with that, but I haven't experimented with it yet.

Yes I Had this problem. Mine did the exact same thing as yours. I rebooted the phone and it seemed to fix the problem. I can't tell if I would have had the problem again because I sent my phone back the next day for a replacement. My WiFi was terribly slow so they are sending me a new 5X.
I'm having the same problem when I use Google Music. I don't even have to turn the screen off. Did you have any luck figuring the problem out?

Yes, I did deselect "Power button instantly locks". I'll try putting it back to the default to see what happens. I know this has nothing to do with the "Smart Lock" state, because it happens even when I'm away from home.
Otherwise, I've found nothing that solves the issue. It's very annoying. The good thing is it probably only happens 10% of the time when I turn off the display with audio playing.
Yeah it's happening every single time I play music. Driving me crazy
Having the same problem. Seems to only happen when I'm doing something that would trigger the motion sensors. So when walking, all audio gets muted within a few seconds of me starting to walk, then stays muted. However, if I pause the audio, after 10 seconds I hear a pop (like the sound of a speaker turning off or something similar) and audio is available again. Exact same thing happens when I'm biking. If I'm stopped, music will continue until I start biking again, pause music, ten seconds later pop, resume. Everything is fine until I stop again, then repeat.
This isn't a problem when I take the subway, or a bus.
It's not just music that's muted though, all notification noises and alarms are also muted. The phone thinks the volumes are all where they're set, but won't play anything either over headphones, bluetooth or the speaker.
A reboot has not fixed my issue. System logs haven't revealed anything. Since this doesn't seem to be a super widespread problem, I'll be RMA'ing this one and hoping it doesn't happen on my next.
I'm not the only one
I have similar issues with mine, using podcast addict and YouTube with either wired headphones or wired aux jack.
What I find weird is that I am able to continue watching the video but without sound. I am unable to reliably replicate the problem but it always happens very quickly in the car using the wird aux input.
Sometimes the headphones will be fine for a long time while I'm sitting still and other times it will seem to stop even if I have no motion happening or have not touch the headphones.
Would be interested in trouble shooting this please advise.
Putting my phone away without turning off the screen seems to make this happen less. However, since this doesn't seem to be a super widespread problem, I've RMA'd my device. Not interested in starting out with a broken handset.
Been happening to me too - think since the MDB08L update. I just turned off Google Now 'Always On' and my podcast is playing fine (so far, lol). Not ideal because I do use OK Google, but continuous audio playback is way more important to me. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon. How can we report issues like this to Google?
Interesting. I use Nova Launcher and switched off Google Now 'Always On' in the phone settings, but left it enabled in Nova Settings 'Gestures and Inputs'. I can still say 'OK Google' on any screen and so far the audio is playing without stopping every minute or so.
Getting this too. Was out running earlier with headphones in, stopped playing randomly five or six times but found skipping track made it work again. At home, had it on loud speaker, got 5 seconds in but it froze, skipped track and got 3 seconds, skipped again and just got 1 second. Gave up after that..
But it works fine when connected to a bluetooth speaker or my car!

I tried this - switched off the "Always On" option. Went for a 40 min run tonight with music on through headphones and it didn't stop playing once.
Even now, got the phone playing through loudspeaker and it's having no problems!
Exact same issue here .
Audio playback stops but device still thinks its playing ie speaker icon on top bar. Sometimes stopping app and restarting helps other times no joy. I have also heard the short pop sound when it stops.
So far has happened in Youtube, google music and in some games. Also intermittent loss of text alert tones too.
Only sure fire way to reset is to restart phone.
I shall give the switching google now always on off trick see if this helps and report back (never use it anyway but still it shouldn't prevent audio)
Try a reboot

I did more searching online and found enough other people are having a similar to think that there's something going on with the software. One post on a nexus 5 X subreddit had talked to Google support and went through a process of a safe mode boot as well as a reboot. I have not tried a safe mode boot but a reboot has resulted in the best playback experience I have had since owning this phone. No interruptions in audio for the last several hours . I'm on Verizon and have not received any updates as far as I'm aware. I am hoping that this will last.
My phone updated yesterday... I'm not sure but I haven't run into this problem yet with the new update. It has only happen 3-4 times before the update but we'll see

After updating yesterday, I had it occur again this morning with video playback and the audio muting. So wouldn't be too hopeful, sadly...

Both mic dead, please help determine software or hardware problem

Today I downloaded a dB meter app from Play Store, and I wondered why it didn't work, then I found out that it wasn't the app's problem but the phone's.
I tried other apps from Play Store that use the mics including Recforge, Sound Recorder, etc but still no sound signal coming from the mics, and yes, calling doesn't work. (Using headphone/earphone with plug-in jack works.)
An interesting finding is that when I tested with Shazam, after I pressed the turning Shazam logo, it almost immediately told me that no song was found, it was like whenever the app detects dead silence in the first 1 sec, it just gave up listening any longer.
I was using BlissPop so I switched back to stock-based SuperZen, suspecting it is ROM related problem but still no luck, still dead silence
Then I even switched to Latest WW Official Stock, but when I get into the test menu via the calculator app and performed the two mic tests, both of them failed. (I'm sure that it is not the speaker's problem)
So, I wonder if I can safely say that the phone's microphones are hardware dead now, if it is true maybe I will be sending the phone to repairment later next week. Or is it possible that it is some deep level software problem that I'm not aware of?
I have doubt because all other components are working except the two mics, and I think it is pretty abnormal for two components at two different side(top and bottom) of the phone to hardware malfunction at the same time. (Also because of the Shazam app's behaviour)
Thank you.
(English is not my first language so please forgive me if I sound rude or awkward )
Hi, have you resolved the issue?
Hi comcraizer,
did you find a solution to this?
Thanks.

I also have a problem with mic in Skype only when using speaker phone, regular phone works fine with speaker phone. This happens only with the mm bootloader on every ROM, worked fine on lp bootloader with any ROM. Anybody else have this issue?

Audio randomly stops working

So not sure what exactly is the cause but one thing that sometimes will cause all audio to stop working is Google play music. Sometimes when I start playing music (device speakers, not Bluetooth or casted), the audio will stop working in a few seconds as if all volumes have been turned down but they're not. Music playback is still going. Verified that when this happens no other audio works as well.
In some cases the volume slider does nothing when adjusting (slider can be moved but no change in actual volume output level) and playback is still going and then audio is lost.
Playback control buttons in play music become unresponsive and eventual play music not responding message comes up. Closing app doesn't fix and still no audio in other apps or system. Restarting phone doesn't help either really. Only workaround I have found is to cast to Google home, play for a few seconds on there (which does work) and then disconnect and audio on device is functional again. Sometimes cast workaround works without reboot, otherwise the reboot is necessary.
Anyone dealing with this too? Things I should look into for suspect causes? Any help greatly appreciated.
Edit: now when audio stops on device, things become a bit more unresponsive throughout device and eventually the device restarts on own without the play music not responding message. Power off and restart options via power menu are unresponsive at this time too.

Hi Jason, I have the same issue. When I play music, the upper speaker stops emmiting audio and the lower one suddenly lowers its volume (but the audio is at full volume in the UI). the problem is that is random and also affect the phone app. so if this happen and someone call me I cant hear it.
do you resolve it?
let me know,
thanks

I tested in safe mode and verified it was not a hardware fault. I suspected it was something that happened when I was using substratum and applied a theme to Google play music. Factory reset was my only way to resolve.
Same issue here with my Pixel 2. I notice this behaviour after using a Bluetooth speaker, and disconnect from it. Sometime i lost Speaker and Microphone access to the phone. If i connect back to a bluetooth device, audio/mic in the bluetooth device work's fine.
I i reboot the phone, i regain access to speaker and MIC... until the next time i use a bluetooth speaker. I didn't notice this behaviour until last week. I have this pixel 2 phone for 2 month now.
