Advise: LG G4 - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear All,
I am planning to purchase LG G4, but I don't know which version is better to have a Stock Nougat, and a custom ROMs, so would you please advise me in this matter.
Thanks.

Steer clear of the g4. Bootloop issues and if its not the rite model no bl unlock no twrp or root.
Good device but can shutdown and bootloop and day. Like a ticking time bomb.

Good device
Don't play games and you won't bootloop
Although at this point you can probably do better

Its got nothing to do with playing games. Well kinda the added heat from gaming does induce bootloop faster But I vred on mine and snes roms all the time never suffered the bootloop. But I also thermal pasted.
I Do agree is a wonderful device but that one issue alone is enough to stear clear

My device is over 2 years old has never bootlooped
I have a pre release
So I don't know
I don't let my phone get hot...don't let it charge in bed....play games...leave it out in sun etc
Only issue I have is when developers start playing with voltage...my phone will reject the ROM. It will start looping...I take out battery immediately....specifically LG modified roms

I'd say get another phone if its in your budget or aim for a newer manufactured model G4

Mine was rite at 2 years old I ended up shutting down the big cores in the end for the heck of it but about the same didnt leave it in the sun didnt use to much while charging. Tried to keep an eye on the heat.
Mine died of a bad tempered day I threw it and cracked the MB changed screen It lived for about 4 more months and just killed over one day. but like I said the Mb was split pretty bad up by the main camera

I use it while it is charging all the time
The problem is allowing heat to build up. Leaving it on ur bed while it charges causes ALOT of heat...so does playing games.....
Charging it in my hand while I use it does not
I don't really keep track of the HEAT
If it is hot it is HOT....time to pop out the battery
I'm still on 6 cores I also have 1gb ram less than everyone else

Avoid kernels and any ROM that has modified voltages and you should be good. Try to get a G4 starting with a 6 or 7 serial number
You will need a g4 h811 or 815 for custom roms

id say go ahead .. but get one that is unlockable. if you in the USA get a h811 tmobile and make sure it is some places sell as h811 but motherboard is another locked bootloader variant.. if in other country get the one that can be unlock research on that.. h815 european
also for bootloop get one manufacture after 2016 or 3 digits of serial number 601 upwards 605 702 ect.

Hi Guys ..
Thank you so much guys, so what is the model now to purchase (H811 or H815 or H818)?!! to have the ability to unlock the Bootloader and root.
Thanks.

How do i make the big core disable work for me before mine bricks too

I just want to be prepared if and when mine bootloops there gotta be a way to adapt it. if it dont already work for ls991 and other varients
Simple, you don't fix something that's not broken. Use your phone until it bootloops then RMA it.

your answer seems kinda rude. I dont know if thats how u meant it. But i have no waranty. Ive dismantled my phone and cpu pasted for one. Im rooted. And my screen has a crack. No rma for me. Plus i make backups but still i cant afford another phone. Id like to have a method to make sure im down for as little as possible. Seems like other people have a perma fix by core disable. Id like to too.
And please dont lecture me on thats what i get for dismantling my phone.
Thats what i do. Hell ill put a mother board in it Myself. But i still would like to see this happen. Again being better prepared than your solution.
I would also like to know how to disable the cores if such thing happens ....there is another way to save ur phone mad scientist if the phone ever bootloops go to recovery factory reset from there...some people have reported this is temporary fix for bootloop ... U can also avoid the bootloop by nt using heavy games or app not rooting running in stock n most important no over charging the phone use only stock geniune charger..hell even in my G4 i dont even have a facebook or viber app ...use
Ur G4 as a second phone

I know the issue is a heat thing. I do some vr and ps1 emulators but only for 20 min maybe 30 max. Like i said i also have thermal paste on most of my chips inside wich works well in keeping my phone about 5 to 7 degrees cooler than most.
I nust know other varients have claimed once they get back up and running that they have to enable the 3 other small cores and thats it basicly fixxing there phones permantly just slower.
Thats what my goal is here too.
I dont know my serial number but i have a 1.1 hw revision number and i was manifactured in oct 23 2015. I havnt heard of many of these bl but better safe than sorry.
i paid to much to have a paper weight
Can i unpack my tot and wHt do i have to modify to make this for my g4

Suposedly sept 15 and before were the time bombs. But there unsubstantiatied claims of many models after doing it.
I just hate change im used to this phone and hate trying to get used to somethin new. Just dooms day preppin for ic and when the bomb does go off. I found one new mb for 991. 120 bucks the rest of them are close to 200 and im not paying it if i dont have to.
Any one know whT was modified in the core disable tots that maybe can be incorporated to others.
U can always buy cheap used cell phones like huwai honor 5x,moto G 2nd generation or asus idol ...they arent that high end performance but still gets the job done at end of the day...hey did u bought the G4 used or new .. Cuz if its used it may already be repaired u check the back where the screws at if it matches ur model number

I already stated that i have no warranty. Either way like another post says lg should be held accountable for this device.
The whole g4 project is one big lemon.
Theyre not fixxing half the devices that are bootlooping finding ways out.

Am on the same roas as you... i see the KDZ to disable big core US cell phones are not there...so in order for us to use this file.. i read that we need to mod with hex editor .. like just the name of the variant... like h815 rename to what ever your variant is.. as if you dont do this LGUP will give you error.. to make it flash and make it think its a HXXX frimaware for your phone...
i heard from LG agent that phones have 15 months warranty from LG.

I'd like a solution along these lines as well. Ideally, the big cores would be disabled during boot, but manually running a script at any point would re-enable them.
@ezzony seems to be working on something similar, maybe he can help?

No. Your prolly thinking how far can one can ramp up the frequency where the device stays stable, right? I will reveal how that can be done later, but currently it can't be done with kernel auditor or script. Firstly I would like to see if my solution works on someone else's' device other than my own so when I get some feedback I'll discuss upping the frequency over on the other bootloop thread. In the meantime have a go with my solution yourself and see how you get on with it.

Really? You've replaced the processor in a smartphone? That's been an idea of mine for bypassing the lockdown on locked down smartphones for a few years (seems like you can order all sorts of "large-volume OEM-only" chips on Alibaba), but the posts on this forum about that kind of hardware modification are scarce, knowledge of low level details is always missing in some (or people just don't bother to answer my questions regarding that), and there is conflicting information in a few cases.

Wanting to Upgrade from a G3

Hey guys,
I'm looking to upgrade from a G3, the only problem I am unsure of is the obvious bootloop problem. Is anyone still using G4's that have been working for a long time? I won't be gaming at all, the most intensive cpu task I will be doing is probably skype video calls. I really want a G4, but the bootloop problem seems like a real let down.
I was wondering if there are any G4 xda members who have followed the whole development of the bootloop problem on the forums, reddit, and everything else. I have looked at lots of stuff, but I don't really understand the progression of the issue as well as if I was watching it unfold. If someone has followed it, they probably have a better idea than I do, of the overall current situation on the bootloop issue.
I want to get a G4 because the newer phones like the G5 are starting to look pretty gross and they keep getting bigger and uglier. The G4 seems like the last good step at the moment from my trusty G3.
Cheers

1. Buy a model which can be unlocked (like the h815 international)
2. Ensure that the serial starts with 603 or higher (604,605...) best is to ensure it was not refurbished (e.g. motherboard replaced)
3. Ensure you will have warranty for at least 1 year
4. Do a regular backup once you've received your device
I own 2 models with serial 60x since 1 year without any single problem and heavy usage.
I saw no single prove(!) that a non refurbished 60x serial device has got that infamous bootloop yet.
Guarantees.. you will get none. For absolute no device. That's why a valid warranty is important.

I see. So there haven't been any boot loop reports with 60x model numbers? I thought I read somewhere that LG hadn't fixed the problem at all?
I am planning to get the international version. However I don't know about the warranty, it seems like a waste of time. If my G4 ended up bootlooping I don't really think LG can truly fix the problem under warranty anyway. Either I get a 60x G4 without a warranty and it doesn't bootloop, or I get one and it does bootloop and if I also had a warranty it would be useless since that would mean that LG hasn't actually fixed the problem at all, and is unable to. It probably also means that at this late point with the G4 being an older device, they wont be trying to fix the G4 bootloop issue either.
I just want some more people who have G4s with later model numbers to give me some faith in buying one.
I know that fixed phones by lg with warranty still having that problem. But i dont know anything about 60x series

first i would either keep the g3 or find something else.
i havnt had a bootloop issue yet but locked bl and just the scare of knowing my device is unusable any day. puts me on edge
now i know some people arent as ocd or anal as I. but if u are any where near what i am you dont need the stress in your life. lol
its a great device i do have root just no twrp and it has lots of potential even like it is on stock rom.
im glad i got it but ive sold it 3 times now and have ended up with it back in decent shape so its most def a soldier
i dont and have never had a waranty i did a thermal paste cooling mod on mine and for all i know that paste is whats kept the solder joint from breaking.
never did actually figure out how to tel what serial num mine has but its not a refurb and it was manfacrd in 10 of 2015
some of the g4s have a flashable tot file to "fix the issue" by shutting down the damaged cores but essentially turning it into a mid ranged quad core phone which i have shut mine down and have tested iffrent lowered clock speeds and still ok. not blazing fast but works.
You could also just wait some days for the g6

Yeah I did read something about that core shutting down fix. So you have had yours for a year? I don't know how widespread the problem is, because most people won't go to the forums to praise a working phone. I really want to get one. But only if I can be reasonably comfortable that I am able to mod it or something to prevent a bootloop occuring. What is your use like? Do you game? I don't. It will be used lightly compared to most. I never install games.

I'm not in the US so I would get a H815. So do you think the reason for less bootloops being reported is due to people not buying the device anymore? Less people have that model? Or less of the people who would come onto the internet and complain? Less of the phone geeks ended up buying later G4s because of the bootloop reports?

i use it like a high end phone should. im not a super big gamer got the ps4 for that i d.id a writeup a while back on coverting samsung gear vr for g4 and ive done my share of vring. i use a otg cable and or blueputdroid to connect ps3 control to it for vr.
like i said i got a sprint varient which is on older firmware rooted no twrp very few modified stock roms.
i like the phone enough i busted two screens the orig and a aftermarket. btw dont ever buy from fixez.com claim oe quality its just a sheet of reg glass broke 2 weeks after i bought it 6 months ago from a scratch no bull**** no drop i ended up putting the spidered glass back on it.
the way ive eased my mind is basicly i buy sell and trade phones all the time. i have a backup i keep put up just incase.
also like i said i did do a thermal paste mod that helps cool her down.
ive sold my g3 3 times and ended up buying it back cause the people loved it so much theyve all upgraded to g5.
when and if i could i would prob buy a g5 or g6 when it comes out against my better judgment of lgs part
the selling point of a g4 is the camera manual mode takes some of the best night shots ive ever seen. days shots are killer

like i said i got a sprint varient which is on older firmware rooted no twrp very few modified stock roms.
i like the phone enough i busted two screens the orig and a aftermarket. btw dont ever buy from fixez.com claim oe quality its just a sheet of reg glass broke 2 weeks after i bought it 6 months ago from a scratch no bull**** no drop i ended up putting the spidered glass back on it.
the way ive eased my mind is basicly i buy sell and trade phones all the time. i have a backup i keep put up just incase.
also like i said i did do a thermal paste mod that helps cool her down.
ive sold my g3 3 times and ended up buying it back cause the people loved it so much theyve all upgraded to g5.
when and if i could i would prob buy a g5 or g6 when it comes out against my better judgment of lgs part
the selling point of a g4 is the camera manual mode takes some of the best night shots ive ever seen. days shots are killer

So the hardware revision seems to have fixed it? I thought I read somewhere that it didn't fix it? Did LG at least make it less common?
Do you also know if this was happening to people across the board? Or was it just a few people? It's a bit risky I must say. How do you find the serial number?

people say the serial num is on the box but like i said never actually found it. they said hardware rev 1.1 was suposedly good which is stamped on the side of the box not on a sticker but printed
its all across the board all carriers.
thats what i was sayin killer phone but there is risk in it i gave up a non rootable note 5 note 4 and a rooted s6 and seem to take the g4 over all due to the features of ir blaster fully funtional . camera and knock on features

Thats really interesting. Have you heard of anyone else warding off the bootloops with thermal paste? It seems like quite a good thing to do. It would also be good on the G3. Thing is, if I get a G4 with a warranty. I wont be able to do that. Probably best to get a second hand one and do it.
Has anyone permanently fixed their phones by resolering the chip do you know?
Thanks for all the information mate

G3 is not a bad phone and G4 is not a big upgrade so I am not sure why would you want to upgrade. I'm sure there are better phones out there especially with 820 SoC released 808 is getting old. I bought my G4 1 year ago mainly because it was very cheap compared to similar models from other brands but now I don't see anything why would you buy it.
Orcam said:
Yeah I did read something about that core shutting down fix. So you have had yours for a year? I don't know how widespread the problem is, because most people won't go to the forums to praise a working phone. I really want to get one. But only if I can be reasonably comfortable that I am able to mod it or something to prevent a bootloop occuring. What is your use like? Do you game? I don't. It will be used lightly compared to most. I never install games.
Yeah I saw that too. I don't want to spend so much on a new phone. Who knows, could have an even worse hardware fault.
I'm not in the US so I would get a H815. So do you think the reason for less bootloops being reported is due to people not buying the device anymore? Less people have that model? Or less of the people who would come onto the internet and complain? Less of the phone geeks ended up buying later G4s because of the bootloop reports?

that is a good question.. if less units are beign sold. but i just read that the newer 6XX have a different motherboard it isnt like the old ones. better quality. what i know is less people reported tha issue.

That's true. The only problem is, I am not in it for the specs really I am more into it for the looks/feel in the hand and possible continued support on XDA for the device. The G3 does still have it yes, but I would like to slowly work my way up. What would you be recommending? I was actually looking at downgrading to a Moto X 2013 edition because it feels just so damn good in the hand. The G5 and G6 look vomit worthy to me. I just hate the look of all the new flag ships coming out.

Make my g4 great again

Hey everyone! I wanna introduce my g4,. I bought my g4 on october by second hand, its a free lg g4 h815, i love the phone for the since i touch it, i came from a Alcatel Idol 3, so the upgrade was big.
But 3 days after buy it my g4 motherboard died (i think it had the 500 motherboard )and i shipped to lg and the gave my back with the 771.
I´ve never had any problem since then, but nowadays (and this is the reason why im writting this post) my batteries lifes doesnt pass from 2hours of screen, i know is ridiculous... I have 3 batteries but anyway i need to fix this battery problem, what can i do? I need to change the rom? I have almost all the things that every post suggest to save battery.
PD: I wrote the first paragraph cause maybe some information could be usefull.
I hope some one could help me!!

my g4 just died

Got a Green screen wasn't quite Quick enough to see what was on it and it was to small to read anyway........now can't get it to boot it has a unlocked bootloader and was running twrp recovery can't even get it in to recovery either.....no download mode either. Any assistance would be much appreciated.
I didn't get any green screen but my h815 also died. I was browsing instagram when phone just turned off. Since thne when i tried to power on the phone it only vibrates and shows me lg logo and then screen goes off. If i plug in to the cragrer it only shows me battery with loading signe before charging and then sreen also go black. Also found this.http://thedroidguy.com/2016/06/how-to-fix-your-lg-g4-that-wont-turn-on-or-boot-up-1060712
guess i will just go for another phone. Thinking to buy someting for around 200€ and then wait for either new iphone or pixel.

It happened to me EXACTLY the same thing with the same app and everything, the problem is that i sent it to warranty and they didn't fixed it because there was "humidity" on it. 6 months now (and counting) with an old Alcatel OT 991D because i can't afford a new phone. I was thinking about buying a new motherboard for the G4 but it might not be worth it anymore...

Check on Alibaba site. MBs for LG are dirt cheap. You can convert your phone to G5 or V10 simply changing the motherboard. All other components are same as in LG G4.

Are you crazy. Nothing in the 3 phones are really identical. This would never work. So u can hook a g4 lcd to a g5 or 10 mb. But nothing else would work. The volume rockers and diffrent. U need to do some studying. What about the dual cameras. The g4s speker in rear versus g5s on chin. Wtf man dont tell people this crap. Now people will start buying other mbs and asking why they wont fit right.

Should I buy an LG G4 Today?

Hi, I was recently thinking about changing my phone so thought of buying the LG G4. A guy near my place is selling it. I have also heard about the bootloop issue. Although the phone was working fine on his shop, should I still buy the phone? Are there any special conditions under which the phone goes into the bootloop so I can test it either using a stress test tool or playing a demanding game before buying? Please, I need some help!
Thanks,
Asbaat

from with serial number on back starting with 601 are less likely to bootloop the higher the number the better. lower then be cautuious.
if you dont care LG not giving nougat officialy. and poor battery. go ahead but also make sure its one of the unlockable bootloaders
search for list of lg g4 that can be nootloader unlocked.
if all okey go ahead has nice camera and unofficial beta N its nice. but official would be better.

Thank you for your reply, can you kindly tell why buying an unlockable bootloader device is necessary? Also, if the device is 601 and it still goes into a bootloop, will there be any solution to this except repairing the motherboard stuff?
Thanks,

Read the bootloop fix it list in my signature.
Buying a device which can be unlocked is absolutely necessary to fully enjoy that phone plus you can do some adjustments regarding bootloop only when unlocked.

unlocked bootloader you can flash other roms stock based or aosp.
you can install kernek and tune it for performance or battery.
its unknown if it will bootloop but is less likely to happen. from 601 upwards.
also see wht my friend steadfasterX says read hes the man. he knows more then i do.
as long as it is 811 or 815...and 601 or newer serial number...its still worth to buy it
No. I haven't had bootloops on my 602 but have still had problems.
No knock on to wake. (replace screen to fix)
Micro usb port worn out and can only be replaced be re-soldering.
Random notification led blinking. (restart wifi to fix)
No updates.
Still could get a bootloop.
How to determine if phone bootloader can be unlocked? thx
