Inconsistent touch screen responsiveness on sides - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I've never had a curved screen so I'm just wondering if that's normal, I find that when typing mostly that any key right on the edge "backspace, p, ?123, capital, and q" for examples that if I don't hit it in the center or inner side then the screen doesn't consistently register the touch.
Now if this is normal for curved screens then I'll swallow the bullet and deal with it, but if it's not normal then I'll get the phone replaced, just don't want to go through the hassle if it's normal.
Thanks

I thought it was just me. Accessing window/menu controls is a pain, too, like tapping the hamburger menu in the upper corner of the Chrome browser.

I completely agree, and trying to use quick reply options in Boost for Reddit isn't any better. I'm getting the phone replaced, if it is something that I have to get use to then so be it, but i'd rather know for sure first.

It may br fixed in 8.0.1. I find "leaning in toward the middle of the screen" offsets the issue a little, if you know what I mean.

I know exactly what you mean, but it's annoying as hell and they already approved my rma so I'm hoping a brand new device fixes it.

Screen alignment with bezel off?

Hi all. Got my Note 2 and loving it. Got a question though. My screen is slightly off center with the bezel to the right just a bit. Theres more "black" space where the screen live pixel end in the left then the right. I know no phone is perfect and dont want to exchange and get one with bigger problem. You guys have same issue? Might be different side of bezel. Want to know if its a normal accurance. Thanks.

My screen is slightly off center to the right as well. Once you notice it you can't unsee it.
Sorry to hear of your dilemma. Mine doesn't do that. If it were me, I'd make them give you a new one. When you're paying 600-800 for a phone it'd better be perfect. Imo

Well, I did an exchange for a different reason, and yes, the new one has the same alignment issue too. Not as bad as the first one I had. After checking the stores display of different Note 2, they all had same screen alignment issue. Some more visible then others. Not a big deal to me with my new one. On another completely different thing, I find it kind of misleading that when you see the pic ad in Samsungs Note 2 site, you see the feather image covering the whole screen, not showing any dead pixels on the sides. Yes, $600-800 is a lot of money but there is not 1 device out there that is perfect. Either squeaky back or power button, blueish screen, loose buttons, speaker cracking,.... All have something.
Of course, if problem is really bad, exchange for new one. But as of now, I love the Note 2.

oh yes very common on Samsung 1st batch's but not talked about much.
My Sprint versions had off center so I swapped out second was perfect - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33473143#post33473143
From there I left 7 years of Sprint misery joined ATT
First ATT was perfect.
Second was pushed left with menu key backlight transparency jagged.
Third - my current has perfect center & menu key.

Get rid of these on screen buttons?

if they remove the buttons how will you operate it? It does not have capacitive buttons like the previous one, they were removed.

the thing you are missing here is... that area is not wasted screen space. it was never screen space, it isnt the screen down there. Yes it is black and looks like the screen but the screen ends right below the on screen buttons, above the HTC logo. If they painted it silver would that make you happy? You've posted 20 times about how mad you are and that this phone is a disaster etc... Why? it is by no means a disaster and your mis understanding of the display is causing you grief. Just buy the phone and enjoy it. There is no wasted screen space, that isnt a screen down there, its just a black bezel.

You can't completely remove them, the reasons are obvious but you could hide them while you're not using them... This will probably be implemented in some ROMs
Nugzo, that's nice of you to try and stick up for HTC. How come on the beautiful HTC one there is not bezel on the bottom? The truth is you don't know why so don't try and defend. I own many phones and enjoy them. Please don't let my opinion make you come up with fake explanations. Relax and enjoy your phone
FYI... IT IS completely wasted valuable screen real estate
There are very simply edits to framework-res that can change the navbar height. Stock height is 48dpi. 42 dpi on most devices is about as short as you want to go and have them still function. Set it to zero to remove it for that matter. Just make sure you have some other way to control your device. I know there are apps to give you that control.
Of course this will require root at the very least.

For me it's disappointing that they kept the logo at the bottom. If they were going to go with on screen buttons and all that's great but they should have removed that part.
Perhaps as development takes off one of the items that can be done is to remove the dock and shift the buttons down. I don't use the dock much and could live without it.
I am waiting a bit to buy mine just to see where the developer community takes this device. I am sure I am a buyer in a month or two but just not impressed enough to run out and buy day 1, week 1, month 1.

Who cares about the buttons. I'm sure they had a good reason, maybe space limitations, maybe they got on the band wagon, I don't know but...
We finally have a Micro SDXC slot. So go buy an S4 or better yet wait for the S5 which is going to be great according to all their marketing hype.

The space wasn't put there for capacitive buttons, it was put there because there is hardware sitting there inside the phone. Due to the hardware that's there, they weren't able to put a capacitive strip there, which is why the buttons have been moved to on-screen buttons. Of course, if you really wanted the capacitive buttons, they could've given you that, but then increased the bezel size and therefore, the entire phone.
I initially didn't like the setup either, but I've gotten over it and it hasn't hindered my enjoyment of the phone in any way.

Its not fake dude lol. there is a schematic of the phone in another thread, the digitizer is where the black HTC strip and logo is. In order to change that design, they would have to lose the front facing speakers. and again it is not wasted screen real estate, it isnt a screen. it is used for the digitizer. In order for it to be wasted screen real estate, it would have to be part of the screen, It is not. maybe you can consider it wasted front panel real estate, but not screen, because it isnt the screen there.

I think this is what he, and several others, are upset about. The M8 has a lower screen-to-surface area ratio than something like the LG G2. I'm sure the area under the logo bar is being used for electronics, but would've been nice to see this area reduced because it is not functional space for the user like the screen or speakers. The M7 made use of this space by incorporating capacitive buttons to leave the screen more free.
On the other side of things, I still don't l don't like giving up any real estate on my screen. However, there's a relatively easy fix that I use on my Nexus 7: GMD Auto Hide Soft Keys. It makes the screen completely clear of the soft keys during normal use, but you just need to swipe up from the bottom to get them back in any app. You can even customize the area that you swipe up from (position, size, etc...).

Is the bezel as noticeable after using the phone a few days?
I personally hate the wasted real estate worst feature about the phone. I'm a massive HTC fan but it was a mistake to waste space with just logo.
Still prefer this over the other phones the only exception could be Xperia z2 just have to wait and see.

Screen clicking when pushed

Just received my replacement tablet and it has the same problem. When holding in landscape mode (power button on top left), you can hear a click on the lower left potion of the screen. Anyone else have this problem?
You mean when you push on the screen harder than you're supposed to?

Yes, i was applying a screen protector i had lying around and as i was pushing air bubbles out i could feel and hear a loud click. I let google know and they sent me a new one which has the same problem, just not as pronounced.
I have the same exact problem. I have never pushed 'hard' on my screen. I have a replacement coming, also. I'll post a follow up.
Edit: To elaborate on how much force it took to generate this issue. I picked it up with my left hand in landscape mode and I heard it. That small amount of pressure.
Honestly I don't understand why this amounts to getting a replacement?
It's just a click, does it make the device unusable? No.

You seem quite the negative Nancy, here. Telling people that they're pushing too hard, then telling questioning getting an issue resolved. Is it unheard of that someone get device without any issues, even IF it's cosmetic. Never mind that it might be something that could cause issues later when not within warranty. In my case, I contacted support, simply to determine if it was normal/expected. They processed my RMA immediately, I hadn't even gotten to asking for one. Chill out.

Because there screen is physically popping in and out. No need to be a strong fanboy but even my moto e is built better and i would expect a jesus device called pixel will have higher quality specs. I received my replacement and its still present though not as strong. I believe this is a manufacturing issue and others will soon notice.

People here are invested in the device, not only financially but emotionally, as this person clearly is. Saying something is defective with the device is like saying something is defective with them. In this case, both points may be correct.

I think I've just fed a troll. iPhone.
Same problem, but google seem a bit clingy to send me a replacement, I am in UK. I've heard UK support is pretty bad compared to US.
I have the same problem. I also noticed that the gap between the metal edges and the glass is wide in certain spots, and I can see right down the gap. When I push down on the screen, I can see a little bit of discoloration occur due to pressure from behind the screen. The discoloring is on the lower left side of the screen (when tablet is held sideways). I'm afraid it's bumping into a component or something.
My screen makes a clicking noise when pushing it on the left half. I really dont mind this issue.
No discoloration of the screen btw.

Maybe it's an strange question. Did you try smelling near the tablet when you did this? I try it and a strong smell like glue or some cleaning product comes out from the tablet. Hopefully I'm not crazy and is not hazardous. Please try it. Thanks!!

I just recieved my Pixel C today and I've got quite a large amount of creaking, clicking and sticking sounds in the bottom left hand quadrant of the device when held in landscape mode and it heads towards the middle of the screen.
There seems to be quite a bit of room between the screen and the rest of the device even when pressing lightly on the screen. It's almost like the screen isn't adhered properly somewhere and there's a gap causing the screen to creak and pop.
The screen also goes weird like its pressing on a component in this bottom left hand corner.
None of the other parts of the screen exhibit this behaviour.
I requested a call back from google and the rep acknowledged the issue and said it was normal and pointed me to a YouTube video with a slight popping sound which sounded very minor compared to mine.
The YouTube video I was directed to was this one https://youtu.be/k7aH00QRq5A
I was surprised I had to push to get a replacement and it was only when I made the creaking and popping sounds over the phone the rep knew my device had a real problem.
Coming from a Nexus 7 2013 I expected much more than this with the Pixel C.
Anyway I've now got to go through the whole rma process and organise a courier to pick up the defective Pixel C.
I have to say that I'll be returning the replacement Pixel C if it exhibits the same problem which is a real shame as I was quite excited about this device.
I fixed it by repeatedly clicking like 30 times. It finally got stuck. Lol
Maybe it has something to do with the glue used.
As Hazzo31 mentions above I too smelt a chemical citrus type smell coming from the Pixel when I received it.
Anyway my RMA is in progress so we'll see how the next one goes.
Same clicking issue for me.
French support arguing that it is normal, not a problem, the tablet is working fine, no exchange possible.
I'm returning the tablet and i'll have to wait for 10 days to get the refund...
I find it unbelievable :
This is the most expensive android tablet. An high-end flag-ship device, designed & built & sold by Google.
Yes, the device is usable, but how can I be sure that the screen or the touch panel will not break in 13 months?

Edge of screen touches not registering

Anyone else having issues where touching the edge of the screen but the phone not registering it?
Like in chrome or gmail or any other app that has the menu button at the top right of the app. I hit the 3 dots but nothing happens. I've even tapped multiple times in a row with nothing registered.
Seems I have to go further into the screen where the curved part stops and the screen goes back flat before the touches are registered normally.
I'm curious if this is normal or not, I'm seriously considering returning the phone for this so I want to know if it's just me or not.
Getting the same thing on mine. Only really noticed it on the keyboard trying to get characters on the very right edge. Already got used to it though and just changed how it tap those characters. Should really be fixed by Google though - even if it's just a software sensitivity thing. You're the first other person I've heard of that has seen this though, so....not at all sure how common it is.
I've noticed it to a few times, particularly in the top right corner.

Yep. Happens on the right side constantly.
Yes, a game that I play doesn't scale properly for the different ratio, and not only am I missing stuff hanging over the edges, but I also can't tap on stuff right at the edge. I am definitely remembering why I don't usually get day one phones (or 2nd generation phones, it seems like the 1st gen is always cool but lacking, 2nd has all the features but none of them work, and 3rd they finally fix all the problems... 4th and later are then usually boring).

Yup, I am having the same issues.
I have noticed the same problems as well.
And in Play Music when I try to touch the 3 dots on the album art to select download it jumps down thru the library?

No screen protector. I am using a case, but I took it off and tested and get the same problem without the case too.
Noticed the same thing here on both the left and right side particularly when using the keyboard.
I've noticed something else though, I can run my fingers along the edge and it will scroll. But tapping in the same spot doesn't register so I am thinking it is software filtering out the touches.

Same problem here... Notice it mostly on lower right. Keyboard and thumbs up in the messenger.
Same with me. I had extreme difficulty registering a key-press when typing a '0' on my keyboard earlier today. As on a normal keyboard, the '0' is on the right edge.

Question Pixel 6 Pro screen sensitivity issue, maybe?

I had the 4 XL from release until I got the 6 Pro a few weeks ago and all the styluses I have and even my finger will often click an item or link instead of scrolling the page up or down. Never saw this on the 4 XL.
No, I don't have a screen protector.
Yeah, have this too. If I want to go a page back it sometimes goes two steps back and the vibration Motor counts 2 times instead of 1 time. Very bad feeling. So if I'm in a Signal or WhatsApp conversation and I want to go back to main window I land on my desktop. That Happens a lot to me and I can't find an option for this. Sometimes on pages where I wanna get down I also click on links. Same thing like you.
Does not happen to me whatsoever. I love my pixel 6 pro.

Nope, no screen protector. I've been pretty lucky and never really scratched my screens. I've tried the hard class and the film type protectors in the past but I'm old enough now. I think I'll just get a new phone if I really scratch it. It's so much nicer using the phone without a case or screen protector. I just use the lens cloth pouch when I put it in my pocket.

I don't know what to tell you guys. It happens a couple times a day. I might be able to go a day without it happening. Maybe the rounded edges are touching my hand at the same time. I'm using my other finger or stylus or something. I don't know. All I know is none of the other phones I had and I've had basically every single Google phone, didn't do this that I can remember.
I'm having the same issue. Very annoyed how often it happen during games. Notice it most play Hill Climb Racing 2. I hope it is just a software issue.
Google support couldn't help. I recognize that I had enabled the dev. options Window animation scale to 0.5 to speed up things. So I disabled the developer options and set everything back to 1.0 . This helped a little bit because of the slow speed of animations. But I recognize the vibration motor often to count 2 times instead of 1. But with slow speed in animations its not so critical. But if you say u don't have it... Just join Gmail and swipe back, 20 times, I think u recognize maybe one or two times that the vibration counts 2 times, you will feel it. Just try it. But with everything on standard you will maybe not see this problem but you will feel it. I hope it's a software thing.
yeah I have the same at times although not that often, it seems to occur when you are clicking on something on the rounded edge, I was clicking on something the other day and it bumped me to home in the browser, and I don't believe I clicked near the home button, zoomed in on the page and then was fine
I see it when just scrolling in news feeds. It will randomly open the link where I totally clicked and dragged. My 4XL never did this and it had a screen protector. It did not work well with a stylus until using the Increase Touch Sensitivity setting. I tried it on the 6 Pro just to see and it did not help.
Same story, the screen is too sensitive although the setting for it is off. It's highlighting the text or hitting the links while scrolling in browser or Amazon or anywhere else. I have hydrogel screen protector installed. Very annoying.
