Dropping the phone - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Questions & Answers

I just ordered my Phone from gearbest. SHould arrive somewhere next week.
I watched the verge hands-on video and one of their phones cracked after a single drop, not very high even. Is the ceramic back that shatterprone? It kinda scares me. I really dislike covers, hardly ever use them. I do drop my phone sometimes, but so far I have never cracked a screen in 10y of smartphone use. I wonder if I'll have to invest in a cover for this phone or not.

my mix 2 arrived 2 days ago, and i must say that it is REALLY slippery, althought i won't be using any covers ( i hate them ) i'll just be extra careful when holding it...as far as cracks are concerned, i just think it depends on the drop dynamic

You need a case. Durability of phones seems to be on the decline as screens keep getting more bezel-less plus manufacturers know that most people throw their phone in a case as soon as they get it.

Hopefully replacement backs are available soon, just in case something happens.

Yeah, but I hate cases. Buying a beautiful phone, with great design and super thin, just to put it in a fat, thick and ugly case
I guess I'll try the included case for a while. Although it's probably not very good at protecting?

Clear silicon soft cases are my solution. Relatively thin and at least offer some protection whilst still showing the phone itself. I generally order two or three different types because of fit and quality but always get a Nillkin if available.

I have always felt the same way. I appreciate good build quality and hate covering it (which even scratches backs most of the time). That being said, I am not taking any risks with this phone because while it may be the most beautiful phone I've ever owned, damaging it would be that much more painful. It's also much harder to get and fix than the Galaxies I used to not mind fixing or even replacing. The case it comes with is also very thin and pretty nice for making the camera flush. I might pop it out while I'm at work or something though.

I ended up getting a clear matte skin for the back. Adds grip and reduces fingerprints.

I dropped mine on asphalt. It landed on a corner butter side down. Came away with nary a scratch on the aluminum frame and no scratches on the screen. I still go naked lol.

Mobile outfitters. It was pricey, but overall happy with it.

Can you post a few pics? Also does it cover the sides or only the back/front?
And did you get the clear one?

Video Review: SGP Ultra Thin Air case!!

Hi Guys,
Got my hands on the SGP Ultra Thin Air case, a thin snap-on style case that won't add much bulk/weight to your phone and is for those users that like to keep their devices slim. You can watch the full review below:
Capsule series is much better. No top and bottom part is big failure.

Looks similar to the $3 case from ebay, is sgp just repackaging these cases?
Look poor with finger prints.
All snap on style cases will look similar, cutouts are a little different and the Ultra Thin features a soft touch back.

I have the Thin Air case as well, along with the Glas, both are excellent products, thought a bit overpriced.
The Thin Air is a quality case, I am currently in Hong Kong, so I've tried on all the generic cases at the electronic malls as well. The cheap generic ones doesn't fit the best, there is always a creak or slight warp on the sides of the case that compresses as you squeeze the sides, which to me is annoying. The "better" branded ones are on par with the SGP, but the price is also similar to SGP, I rather buy from a well known brand.
I've had two cheap generic ones before I bought the case mate barely there and the SGP Thin Air, both cheap cases broke a few days after when I took the case on and off.
The Thin Air does leave finger prints, but I don't care too much since it is only the back, and it can be wiped away. The most important part for me is a super thin case with minimal protection that doesn't break easily. So far (fingers crossed), SGP has done it.

Thanks for sharing, I agree with most of what you have to say, however I feel the case itself just isn't for me. SGP however has been releasing some quality products for the GS2 (as expected) - and I'm excited for what they are bringing next.

I agree, this case isn't for most people, since the normal person that wants a case would want more protection than what the Thin Air has to offer, plus like your video mentioned, there is no top and bottom coverage. But out of the cases I have, I like this the most, the black color blends in with the phone.
Thank you for the review videos, you are doing a great job, very clear voice, smooth presentation, no "umms" or "uhhs," or any tongue smacking. Keep it up! It is because of you that I bought the Glas, which I love!

I was really excited for this case due to it's look and how minimal it is, but after just 3 days I need to stop using it.
The stickers you place along the sides are constantly moving. They slide up and out of the case somehow, so you need to slide them back down, which leaves a trail of sticky residue.
Also, there is one spot on the back my phone just above the battery
cover that is now damaged due to the case rubbing against it. There are scratches and an area where the color has rubbed off.
My phone is in worse condition after a few days in this case than from a week without any case.

I did not, but it was bought directly through their site, not a 3rd party.
Don't get me wrong, the case is beautiful and the damaged area is a lot smaller than the damaged area would be if you were to drop it on concrete without this case. I just want to let others know that this happens as others could be even more OCD about their phone condition than I am. SGP knows the inside of this case scratches your phone, that's why they include the stickers. Unfortunately this one spot was missed, either due to oversight, or it is too small of a location to place a sticker.
I had the Captivate before this phone using a Body Glove case. While it is the best case I have ever used on a phone, it also scratched up the top and bottom of my phone pretty bad. It's a pretty common thing with the harder cases.

Nope, just personal emergencies that required me to be out of town for a week. I'll get some pics after work tonight.
I received my Ultra Thin Air Infinity White today and I have to say I'm quite disappointed.
The case doesn't fit that well. If I lay the phone on a table and press down on the left or right side the phone sinks deeper into the case. Without pressure the edges of the case are almost even with the screen's surface, it's only if I press down on the phone that the edges rise above the screen.
Is this a flawed specimen or are all the Ultra Thin Air cases like this?

As I stated in the video, it's not as tight as I'd like it to be. It won't fall off but I feel a gap between. Seems like it's all cases.

No reflection on your review, I ordered the case before you published it.
It's a shame though, it looks good but I'm not sure I'll use it much.

Forgot how good this phone feels naked

I had to take my case off today and held the phone naked and forgot how freakin awesome it feels without a case.
I might just go raw dogs on this phone for a bit.

I agree. I have a screen protector on the front and I will be getting a vinyl skin soon to protect the back. I always thought cases personally made the phone look uglier.
I understand the purpose of it, since the phone is at least a 2yr commitment, but damn, I can't stop touching this phone again after taking the cover off. And I had a thin drizonic tpu case too....
Fack it, no case for you...thats y I have insurance right?
i've gone caseless and haven't looked back, now i have 2 useless TPU cases just laying around.
I like my phone like I like my wife. Naked. No case, except for my belt one and no screen protector.
The thing is cases will be effect on the future, I mean when u try to sell ur phone and get a good price. So I believe on the screen protector and cases. My phone on the way and already have the case and the screen protector ready
I've been going around without protection since I got it. It feels better and imo looks better. I don't even have a screen protector and I haven't suffered a single scratch (knock on wood). I haven't been overly careful with the phone either I keep it in my pocket allot I fall asleep with it and roll around all night and I leave the thing just about everywhere and it's dropped a few times onto hard surfaces.
Yea I agree with all the above except that all its takes is one fumble and your phone is toast....
I don't care much about scratches or looks. I want my GNEX to last. I've already dropped it once and can't image what would have happened without my otterbox.
I don't feel like treating my 700 gnex like a baby so I feel much better when using my case even if it is uglier and more bulky.
Test,
I knoowwww!! I took of my Gnex out of the case to clean it , and god this phone is soo slim and sexy. if Samsung could just use less plastic on their phones

I know what you mean. So sexy naked but I just can't afford to rock it that way. I have the incipio dual case and I love it. Very slim. The one thing I do not like about the case is all of the lint it contracts on a daily basis.

Hey believe me, I'd much rather use it without the case!
I just don't trust that it could take a fall from 3 feet without one.
The screen may not crack or break or even get scratched but the innards are my concern.
To me its like traveling with a Gibson Les Paul without a case...lol
Test,
Get a Ringke Slim Metallic case, it's the same color as the body and it's really subtle so you won't notice the phone has a case.
I do agree though that the phone is plain sexy naked, had a TPU for a bit but couldn't stand how it uglified this piece of art. The Ringke case is a good compromise (got a few minor scratches on the case - which would of been on the phone if not for the case).
Screw that the phone feels good but its damn slippery.
Yes every time I take my phone off my case it feels soooooo sexy and I always think about running nekkid but then the nicks and dings sets in my head hahahah

KaysCase Slim Hard Shell Cover Case (Clear) [Super-Slim Minimal Flexible Design]

I normally hate cases, hate them. This thing is so thin and clear and minimal, it's great! It's the slimmest case I've ever seen. And it's not that hard plastic crap, its a nice flexible piece that is very durable. It snaps right in with ease, but also holds the phone in really well. It still covers enough to protect the phone from normal drops on the ground. I was tossing it around and dropping it just to test it out last night. When it lands on its face, the case has just enough of a raised edge above the screen to protect the entire front side. The back is completely protected, but it's super clear so you can see everything. The sides have really stylish cutouts that allow for perfect use of the IR sensor, headphones, volume, camera, flash, microphones, and charger. It covers the SIM port too, which is good because it rarely gets used, but needs the protection from elements. The case is perfectly clear and also has a slight glimmer to it that makes it looks really attractive. Like I said, I HATE using cases but I love this one. You can't beat under $10 for this...
I actually got a promotion, don't know if it's still going on, but it was $2 off and brought my order to $4.99!!! With $3.98 in shipping. Only paid $8.97 grand total. It was also conveniently located in Atlanta, so I expected to get it next week, but instead got it the very next day.

You honestly can't go wrong at all, given the price. I drop tested it 5 times last night on hard tile, it survived all 5 just fine, with leaving a small scratch mark on the back. But because of the aluminum silver color of the phone, it's honestly hard to tell that it's even there. I actually had to search hard for any damage. I really like that it's flexible, so that when it does have impacts it doesn't just shatter, it absorbs.

OtterBox Armor Review

Bought this case new from ebay knowing about its few problems being reported like the proximity sensor, call problems, and audio issues, but still preferred this over the lifeproof simply for its protection. When i first received it, my initial reaction was "wow, its here, and its HUGE!" But i carefully disassembled it and clean it out just in case, water tested it (passed), dried it off, and finally put my phone in its new suit of armor. It really made the phone huge, and i mean huge, but i honestly dont mind the added bulk because of its substantial protection and it still feels very comfy in hand and doesnt hinder the phones functionality at all. Speaker for music also plays very loudly and crystal clear unlike other reviewers have stated. I think its a great case to buy and kind of essential if you have a very physically active life. Now to the cons (although their aren't many): Unlike many other reviewers of the white version have stated, i dont have call proximity issues, only thing that happens related to proximity is when i turn the phone over to face down while playing music, it pauses, but thats expected because i had that motion option enabled. Next, phone calls work fine and i hear people just fine, but the caller on the other end may have a problem hearing you sometimes. But it rarely happens and most times they can hear you. Easy fixes are bluetooth and earphones. Lastly, the home button definitely requires more pressure to press and the menu/back "buttons" are a little harder to get to but you'll get used to it. Thats the only thing "wrong" with this case honestly and its still excellent to have. I would highly recommend it. If you dont mind a little bulk, get it. Again, great great case :good:
I have a brand new one in original packaging from otterbox if anyone wants, contact me through dm or 6785162209
Personally speaking, at that kind of bulk, I'd rather shove in a 7200mAh Anker. Protection is nice and all but severely handicaps the phone IMO. If you like bulk, might as well triple your battery life.
Furthermore, if it does get scratched/cracked/broken, it's fairly easy to replace (for most members here). For example, you can swap the camera lens for a few bucks if it does get scratched.
I've had my GS3 for almost two years now. Been completely nude the whole time. No screen protector, nothing. There are many surface scratches on the screen which you can only see if you look at it while the screen is off under a super, super bright light. Doesn't affect the image quality at all. Outside frame (the gray part) is a little cracked in few places. Not a big deal.
Runs flawless on CM 10.2.1. Undervolted almost 100mV across the board.
I used to be OCD, but decided to save my health instead.

I myself looked for waterproof. I too believe as you do and went naked on previous phones. But now with a toddler and my part time job in swimming pool service, waterproof was the selling point.

I personally liked the armor series for my S3. I only stopped using mine due to needing to put my phone in my pocket and the armor didn't quite fit the bill. I use my lifeproof nud for daily use at work but when out playing around or working at the house I still use my armor series. And you definitely can't beat the otterbox warranty.

LOL...I love my phone being slim and I can live with scratches. But after a few near misses with my toddler son and getting soaked a couple of times on the job, I decided I would have to give in. Bring without my phone even for a day would screw up my schedule. Amazing how much I depend on it.

I've also bought this case and it turned out to be just what I was looking for. Before I've had Griffin survivor which would be good enough for me except two things, it was not that easy to remove (I prefer naked S3 while not in a hostile environment) and it scratched my S3. After the latter happened I've immediately sold it.
But the reason to post is for everyone with menu/back/home buttons problem. After a proper inspection I've found out that the back cover of the case doesn't give enough support for installed phone. If the phone is fully pushed into the case there is approximately 1.5mm gap between the phone and the back cover. So after first push on menu/back/home button even if the phone is inserted all the way in to the case, the phone backs up a little and that gap moves from the back to the front. In order to solve this problem I've ordered 1.5mm thick silicone sponge to fill the gap between the phone and the back cover. One thing that bothers me about this is that waterproofness of the case might be broken if 1.5mm thick sponge is too much and even bigger problem is how test waterproofness as I don't want to sacrifice my phone. I'll report any pros or cons about my modification. If it solves this problem I'll post some pictures of modification.
I've had the Acase Superleggera Pro Dual Protection Case on my S3 since I bought it and I love it. I've dropped it so many times and not noticed any difference in performance. And it's not super bulky like the other 2 layer cases. It's also less than $10 at Amazon these days.

I tested its waterproof function without phone first and then finally just did it repeatedly with the phone and it hasnt failed me yet, hopefully never. And also ive noticed this gap, i wouldnt recommend filling it because it may compromise as u stated

I've had the Acase Superleggera Pro Dual Protection Case on my S3 since I bought it and I love it. I've dropped it so many times and not noticed any difference in performance. And it's not super bulky like the other 2 layer cases. It's also less than $10 at Amazon these days.

For everyday protection sure it may be good, but when it comes to 10ft drop, water, being hit, stomped on, and numerous other things, the armor case is the best.

As I've said if not in hostile environment in my case this is mostly dusty air and greasy surfaces, I prefer my S3 naked. So Otterbox Armor is needed.

I tried with 1.5 mm foam and it was just a little too much. Now I am waiting for 1mm which I think it should work. As I've already said, in my case waterproofness is not really needed but I wouldn't like to brake it. Will report again.

I finally got 2mm foam as 1mm is hard to get. 2mm foam goes into gaps between ribs on the rubber on the back cover of the case. So this just might do the trick as the case closes ok.
The for the review, I have an Otterbox Defender and love it to death, but I've been thinking of buying one of these.
i have the Acase Superleggera Pro Dual Protection Case on my S3 and it is great!
Just got my new otterbox armor today!! Love it so far! Any way to tell if it's legit and not a fake? Lol... Paranoid I guess?

RhinoShield CrashGuard Bumper Case worth it?

I've heard about the RhinoShield CrashGuard Bumper Cases. Apparently, they can withstand 11ft drops on concrete. Has anyone had any experience with them in the past? Do they hold up? I am deathly afraid of cracking my S8 Plus but also find the idea of covering up my GORGEOUS phone with a case to be stupid. Thoughts?

Mine just shipped today, hopefully it'll arrive by the weekend.
My 2¢
I like idea of a bumper frame, paired up with a clear or matte body skin on the backside.
Can I attest to the extremes of the protection, not even gonna try, but , from previous use on other devices, it should do the job as advertised.
They add a bit more width to the grip of the phone than one might imagine, but, I don't think that will be an issue with this phone, it has a relatively narrow grip as-is.
I'll post when it arrives & will decide whether it becomes my daily driver case (Other two are the OEM Clear Case & OEM Alcantara Case).

Waiting for it to come on to Amazon, still isn't on there:/
I have it, the power button is a little tough to push, but I like it a lot!! Skin looks great with it
^looks like the best bumper for us! Cool
I perorder mines (and one for me wife after she saw the videos she wanted it)
They said mines has been ship but no tracking number yet
I like the idea of not coving up your phone.
I went caseless back in the day with the plastic phones. But with the new all glass/metal phones its a bit different. The metal gets bend and the glass breaks.

That looks perfect, can't wait to get mine. Still no tracking number.
Looks good. Might get it with a skin as well.
Thanks.
Had one on my 6P. Dropped a number of times without any damage to the frame or screen. I will be getting one for my S8+ as well.
As for the power button being stiff...give it a week or so to break in. It gets easier to push.
My RhinoShield bumper arrived today & my 2¢:
Overall,it seems like a half-baked effort.
The sides do not cling to the phone well/gapping.
While I expected the case to add some width to the grip, they could have done a better job contouring the edges, the feel-in hand is akin to the S7 Edge, not good at all.
Buttons are extremely stiff to depress, should not be like this out of the box & require a "breaking-in" period.
For those that are planning on using a TGSP, the case may tighten up a bit,IDK,I don't use anything other than liquid sealers on my displays.
I may cut out the buttons & try using it like that. If it works out OK,I may use it on occasion, but, this case definitely falls in to the "occasional use only" category, I'll stick w/the OEM Samsung Clear hard case as a daily driver.
To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement, too bad Nillkin isn't making bumper cases anymore..........................

I'm really disappointed to hear this. I just ordered mine Monday since no one else seems to be making one. I've become fond of a good bumper and a cool skin.

I kind of agree with you. I was super excited for mine to come in, however, i was fairly disappointed when it arrived.
Exact same issues with it as you.
i also got one the other day and the fit is pretty bad, the sides of the bumper dont fit the phone well and for $25 i would have expected a lot better. I ordered a cheap spigen case off amazon for $11 and it fits much better then this does.

I've already boxed mine up,contacted EvoLutive Labs via e-mail & requested a refund.
I stated the reasons pretty much the same as we've experienced, hope to hear back in a day in a day or two.
I've been pleased w/their past efforts, but, this one is a fail. Perhaps those w/the S8 are having a better experience, probably not experiencing the loose fit as we are, chalk that up to the extra height of the S8+.
A tight fit is a challenge here, but,I feel it could have been better.
Forgot to post back.
I got my case a few days ago and been using it. It works for me so far.
The sides of the case does fit a little lose, but the phone doesnt slide around it. So all that is fine, its probably has something to do with the protection it offers.
The buttons are a bit on the hard side to push in.
The back have a nice lip so the camera and everything is lifted up. Same for the front.
The edges on the front are a bit exposed but it would have to be in order to use the phone. But it still seems like it would protect.
The phone feels great in this guard. there arent any sharp corners on the bumper.
I had a thin silicon case that had sharp corners on the ports and it would cut into my hand. This one doesnt do that which is great.
Also funny that my silicon case was suppose to be super thin but yet this bumper makes the phone seems alot thinner then the phone in the silicone case.
I got the black one and a blue on on the way for my wife. I doubt she will use it since i brought her a wallet case before she got her phone.
I'm still waiting on mine. I got an email with a tracking # finally, but it still says pre-shipment. So I guess it won't be showing up this week.

Yea therr shipping is weird.
Normally they email ypu saying your order is fulfilled.
Then a day or 2 later you get a tracking number.
It will say pershipment. Then a day or 2 later it will get pick up.
And then about 2-3days for it to make it to you.
