Hi. for anybody that is using Google Voice as their voicemail on Verizon Pixel 2 XL, are you getting double notifications? This is what is happening to me when a voicemail is left.

Why not just use Verizon visual voicemail? Works much better and is only 2 bucks a month

No need to pay extra for that when normally Google voice works perfectly. It was working fine with my pixel xl

I have yet to receive a voicemail since setting up my Pixel 2 XL, but I did start getting double notifications a week or so ago on my original Pixel XL.

It doesn't work better for my needs. It's a substantial step down actually. I can funnel multiple numbers to Google Voice as well as have different voicemail greetings for different callers along with great access to messages via the web and other devices.
I have a brand new Pixel 2 XL (Unlocked on AT&T). I've been using Google Voice for Voicemail (Google Voice "Lite") for years with no problems (OG HTC EVO 4G, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 5, Nexus 6P) . However, when trying to use it with my new Pixel 2 XL I not only get the double voicemail notification per the OP - BUT also my custom notification sound for Voicemail that I set will not sound despite it "sticking" in the GV Settings listing. My Voicemail Notification insists on playing my "Default" sound and also plays it twice (double)! I have tried to fix this by rebooting the phone, disabling Hangouts/Hangout Dialer, changing Voicemail Settings in the Phone (Dialer) App, all to no avail. I have never ported my number to Google Voice. Can someone PLEASE test and see if a custom sound (WAV File) works as a GV Lite Voicemail Notification? Any Double Notification? Any ideas for a fix? A bug in the GV App? Any ideas? Thanks!

I want to say this may be something to do with the GV app. I'm seeing the same behavior on an N6 since the last(? ) update.

Could you PLEASE test and see if a custom sound (WAV File) works as a GV Lite Voicemail Notification on your Pixel 2 XL? Thanks!
I'm also having the double notification , the app itself is showing me to notifications
Annoying
I'm getting the double notification too on my new Pixel 2 XL. Anyone figure out if there's something we can do or just have to wait for another app update?
Same here. Double notifications, was driving me crazy. Glad to know I'm not alone. Bad to know this has been an issue for sometime!
double notifications here as well

I use Google Voice exclusively. It has visual voicemail and it also lets you text/call from your computer which is a huge time saver.
I was trying to use google voice but I couldn't get it to validate.
google voice is great, I had issues getting it to work until I created a new google voice number instead of just a fowarding/voice mail number and then added the device through the web platform. It has worked ever since.
There is no build in visual voicemail for android afaik. Apple came up with their own protocol for that. As for 3rd party options, there is google voice like everybody mentioned but if you can't/don't want to use google voice then there are some apps on the market which require you to forward your unanswered calls to their number. There is always the privacy issue though which is why I do not use them.
I use Google voice on Verizon there's a YouTube video that I followed and work very well. Just go to your Google/voice.com and get a Google voice number and set it up like that.

To use Google Voice for voice mail you have to enable conditional call forwarding. For Verizon this is as easy as dialing *71 and then the 10 digit number. For Sprint I don't think it is that easy. You may want to call their customer care. Hopefully you can get it working, I'm not sure I could live without mine.

Thanks for the info. Will try gv again.
PF Voicemail+ it's free on the market and I've been using since the OG Droid days. It's perfect. I like the fact that it'll let you play the voicemail either over speaker or through the actual headset. Try it out :O

I use google voice. It is not the best at transcribing the voicemail, but you can play, pause, and delete right from the app.

Yes, I know, rebooting an old Thread. But it's better than starting a new one, right??
Based on reading this thread, as well as some other looking around I have done, it seems the only real options for free VVM are Google Voice, Youmail, or Visual Voicemail Plus.
I cannot use Google Voice. Not that I don't like it. I love using GV. However, my cell number is tied to the GV account that I use for work, so that I basically have a dual line cell phone (my VZW Number for normal stuff and the GV number for work stuff). With that, I cannot give my cell number to another GV account to get VoiceMail.
The market reviews for both YouMail and Visual Voicemail Plus leave much to be desired. Seems that for every review that says it is great, is a review that says it is crap. But, most people just review the app when it is causing issues, so it is not always a great idea to put stake in reviews. Wondering what the opinion is of people here.
Im not even sure where the problem is, but my phone rarely is able to call my wifes phone, I have the gn2n she has a moto photon, she often times gets a busy signal, before a call goes through and when I call her it just rings and goes to voice mail, she never even gets ac missed call. everyone else's phones seem to work done as far as I know.
Any one have any insight to what causing or our problem?
I have the same problem as I have the note 2 and my friend has the s3 and he says when he call me it always go to voice mail
I have this problem as well, but it started before the GN2. Sprint really is getting unusable.
Do any of you guys use Google voice? I couldn't call out to many numbers, just got a busy signal. Had to disable the Google voice integration and the tech told me she had to disable it on her end too.

Did the fix the issue once disabling the google voice integration? If it didnt then im getting this phone on tmobile cause i think its a sprint issue.
Sprint tells me that this phone "might not be compatible" with Google voice. I don't buy that, but I haven't reenabled it since the issue I had.

Anyone else having issues with their Verizon Voicemail on the 5X? Whenever I get a voicemail, instead of the regular notification that I have a new voicemail, I'm getting a text message with a bunch of gibberish, like this:
Code:
//VZWVVM:SYNC:ev=NM;id=4;c=1;t=v;s=xxxxxx;dt=27/10/2015 09:30 -0500;l=7;dev_t=5
Of course I just got off the phone with Verizon level 2 technical support and they told me that its my phone and it isn't compatible with the way their voicemails are handled in their system, which is just their way of passing blame to someone else.
Anyway, I'm still able to receive and check my voicemails, I just don't get the proper notifications anymore, just a text message with gibberish. I've tried the default google messenger and also Textra, and both do the same thing (thinking maybe it was my SMS app).
I also don't have visual voicemail, and told the verizon rep i just want basic voicemail, and they told me their free voicemail is some sort of basic visual voicemail now, which I think is part of the problem.
Any suggestions, or can anyone verify their voicemail notification icon is working correctly??

Same issue when setting up my sister's 5X. I had the issue initially when getting my Nexus 6 on Verizon very early. There will be an updated verizon visual voicemail app for nexus phones on Verizon in the future just as Motorola came out with one for the Nexus 6 IMO. There was one for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Verizon as well back in the day. Until then, your best bet is to use Google voice to handle Voicemail. Works really well once you have it set up. If you dont use your google voice number for anything else; set it to do not disturb in the settings on your desktop so that it goes right to voicemail once your Verizon line is not picked up.....

No, you will not need the google voice app. You will need to access settings in google voice on your desktop. You can create a greeting through there and set the google voice line to do not disturb if you are not going to utilize it for normal calls. You will need to utilize hangouts to access the voice mails. They will come as texts and you can also listen to them through the hangouts app. Works really well in my opinion.

Ah yes I remember I played around with Hangouts and Voicemail back when the Hangouts Dialer was first released, I remember now that I had the option of listening to voicemails through Hangouts.
I think I have it all set up now, just have to find another phone to call my number and test it out lol.
Thanks again for the help!
Call Verizon and ask for disable visual voicemail. Ask for standard voicemail and block both standard and advanced visual voicemail. Then the old school voicemail indicator will work again.
This is the same issue CM users have had on Verizon with their visual voicemail.

I was told that would work as well when on the phone with Verizon.....
Just did a test on my 5x (Verizon) and it went into my VM and after I left a test message and hang up, it gave me the notification icon and sound. I never had visual VM before, so I don't know if that is the reason. Otherwise, working fine for me.

That is correct. However, did you make sure you have advanced calling activated on your account so that you can do data over voice..... Voice over LTE? Call in and activate it with Verizon if you dont. Sometimes with the activation of that , it automatically enters you into basic visual voicemail which can then be a problem.

This must be what happened with me, I activated advanced calling and I'm guessing that triggered basic visual voicemail which is the problem.
And the tech I talked to told me there was no way to remove basic free visual voicemail and go back to standard voicemail. Maybe she is wrong, I'm not sure, but either way I'm content with using Google Voice for now.

Yes, do this, for now anyway, until Visual Voicemail catches up with M. I still have Advanced Calling enabled, as well as HD calling, so VoLTE should work. With the Visual Voicemail removed (by VZW via chat in my case), I just get the old school simple voicemail notification on the status bar and dial *86 to retrieve.
Verizon Wireless Fixed my Issue
I had this issue since I got my Nexus 5X 2 months ago, and Verizon Wireless just fixed it over the phone and now it works fine. I don't use visual voicemail or anything fancy, although I used to use Google Voice up until a year ago.
He basically reinitialized the voicemail, so I had to set it up again from scratch, re-recording my outgoing message etc.
I should also mention my texts didn't work sometimes either... some MMS messages would just say "Downloading" and never download, and this happened often on my old Droid Maxx HD. The workaround was to disable wireless and wait for it to download over the data connection. Anyway this started happening on my new Nexus 5X also, but they reprovisioned the phone and fixed that also. :victory:
You can turn this off yourself from the My Verizon app or the website. No need to call Verizon. It's listed under "manage features".

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you would choose to use Verizon Visual Voicemail over Google Voice Lite (that works with your carrier's phone# - without requiring you to use your GV#)?

I'm curious if it will work with Google Voice Lite without the Google Voice App. Having to use the app does get irritating when it stops running in background and causes delayed notification if you don't have Text or Email notification active. Also it does seem the app doesn't get updated much.
I have missed important messages in the past and now I check the Google Voice app at least once a day to make sure it had not stopped.

I haven't used the GV app on my phone in months (or over a year now) - had to check to see if it was still there To be honest, I don't think it is needed after the initial set up.
I get my notifications via an Email from GV to my mailbox, with the transcriptions and link to message - I also get a text message sent to my GV#, which results in a SMS on hangouts app.

Thanks for the reply but like I said before if you have Text and EMail notification turn off you just get a voicemail notification from native app and could use native app to check. But if the Google Voice App stops you don't get the Notification because messages do not sync with the native app.
Text and Email notification (icon) if you have a lot notification do not standout as much as the voicemail notification (icon). Would be much easier if Google would include Google Voice Lite in the native app without having the separate app for syncing.
Transcription has never worked well for me because everyone beside Robo spam that leave me a message have Spanish accents. (Funny to read and trying to guess what they really said) Google Voice Lite app has the transcription but would be better in native app.

Understood. I don't use the native app for voicemail notification, so I never ran into this issue. I just rely on the hangouts notification. Thanks for the clarification

Does anyone know if it works with AT&T? My vm number is being forwarded so I can use Google Voice or I would try it myself. I would like to not have to use Google Voice.
So I just flashed the Pixel XL dialer to my LG V20 and it works great but with one issue.. On my voicemail tab, it shows that I have a voicemail, but there is no option to listen to it from there.. Is this normal..?? I still have the native Verizon Voicemail app so I can hear it that way, but shouldn't i be able to listen to it from within the dialer/voicemail tab..??
Thanks.!
That may be a question for the V20 forum...
