Introduction
Just like most Chinese brands, also CUBOT entered the market of the so-called “Battery Smartphones” starting from the CUBOT H1. The CUBOT H2 is entirely based on its previous model, but with an upgraded CPU, increased RAM and a Better Chassis and some other minor differences. Somehow they have removed the IR Trasmitter but this is something that, in my opinion, almost no one uses nowadays with the diffusion of Smart TVs & Home Appliances.

Hardware
The CUBOT H2 Smartphone features a mid-range SOC, MT6735A, that is able to handle every daily task without major issues. It is supported by a plenty amount of RAM, 3 GBs, improving multitasking and device’s reactivity while running heavy apps. Also, just like the latest Xiaomi MI5, it features a screen supported by an ultra-bright 16-LED backlighting, but its resolution is just HD (1280x720), the maximum officially supported by this SOC. Battery Capacity is just a bit lower than the CUBOT H1, 5000mAh instead of 5200mAh, but it doesn’t mean that battery life has been impacted. Follow my next paragraphs to know more.
Unboxing
Packaging comes with many accessories: 1x Screen Protector (Tempered Glass) with Wipes, 1x SIM/MicroSD tray Eject Tool, 1x OTG Cable, 1x Micro-USB Cable (really nice quality), 1x 5V/2A USB Charger, 1x Quick Start Guide and the Smartphone (of course). No Headset included.
CUBOT has focused its attention on the design, the device feels extremely solid (much better than my Galaxy S4) thanks to the Zinc Titanium chassis, there is no Keys Rattling at all and it is Slim enough considering that there is a 5000mAh Battery inside. Sincerely, this is the best-built Smartphone I have ever tried. Well Done CUBOT!
It is just 15.0x76.5x0.9cm, compact enough and it weights 232 g, not so lightweight but with a Metal Chassis and an Huge Battery inside you can’t expect something lighter.
On the front side there is the 2.5D Curved Display, that makes the usage of the device much more ergonomic. The Glass is enclosed in a Metal Frame, which increases the device’s toughness.
The upper front side of the device features a Front-Facing Camera, an Earpiece, a Notification LED and the Sensors hole that includes Light, Proximity and Gesture Sensors.
Just like many other devices, also this LED is an RGB variant, so it supports multiple colors and you can customize them via the Settings app. It is used as for Notifications and Charging status.
The lower front side of the device there are the Soft-Keys Navigation Buttons (not retroilluminated), and an almost hidden Microphone Hole. A nice idea to keep the whole design the most clean possible.
On the back side there is a Curved Plastic Cover, with a nice texture that makes the whole device feel Premium. This cover isn’t hard to remove, making any future battery replacement much more easier that devices with Glass/Metal back cover.
The upper rear side of the device features a protunding Camera supported by a Dual-Flash (Single Tone) configuration.
The lower rear side of the device features a noticeable Brand Logo, some little words about the Device and a big Speaker hole.
As you can see, CUBOT take care of many details, especially regards the Metal Chassis. It is absolutely perfect, without any little defect. Thanks to the CNC treatment, the whole chassis is made to be the most comfortable possible. I’m really impressed, I hope that CUBOT won’t abandon this extreme attention to the details.
Unlike some other Chinese Smartphones, the SIM Card/Micro-SD tray has been well designed to allow the usage of a Micro-SIM and a Micro-SD without having to replace your SIM with a Nano variant. So you can use a Micro-SIM and a Micro-SD in the same time.
Device
Screen
CUBOT choose to include an innovative IPS screen on this device, I still need to find the brand and the model, but they declare that it has an ultra-bright 16-LED backlighting, just like the Xiaomi MI5 then, and I must admit that under direct sunlight I was still able to see the screen without any issue at all.
Under normal usage, the screen is almost everytime bright, even if brightness is set to low-medium. It’s a pity that its resolution is just HD, but Quality is just awesome, you won’t be able to see any pixel at all, it is really sharp and white reproduction is perfect. Comparing the screen with my Galaxy S4, you can see that CUBOT H2 screen looks much better as regards white reliability.
I have used my Galaxy S4 Light Sensor to measure CUBOT H2 maximum brightness. I don’t have a professional Lumen Meter, so this (Lux) is the only value that I can provide you.
About Viewing Angles, the screen doesn’t suffer any kind of issue, it behaves perfect in every single condition.
As you can see, Image Contrast is accurate while Saturation is a bit too high, so Colors look pretty vibrant, similar to Super AMOLED Screens. This is something pretty personal, so I won’t express my opinion about.
Camera
Back Camera performs pretty well, even if I’m not sure that the resolution is interpolated to 13mpx or not, but, just like almost all Chinese Smartphones, the noise level is a bit high. If CUBOT works a bit more on the Camera software, I’m pretty sure that Photos Quality will be improved.
There are no major issues with low-light photos, HDR makes Photos just a bit brighter.
Under medium sunlight Photos looks pretty good, detailed and with Vibrant colors.
Thanks to the Dual Flash configuration, low-light photos gets improved pretty well. As you can see, my cat looks much detailed here. Even without Flash, quality isn’t too bad.
Auto-Focus speed is decent, nothing extremely fast (no PDAF here), but neither extremely slow. It is as fast as on my Galaxy S4. Under low-light conditions it tends to be a bit slow, but I think this is software-related so it can be improved a lot in the future.
About Videos, there is no Optical Stabilization here, but Software Stabilization (if enabled) does its job (but producing that famous fisheye effect), and there are no major issues here too. Maximum Supported Resolution is 1080p (named as Video Quality – Fine). I can say that this is enough for standard medium quality videos, do not expect ultra-high quality.
Front-Facing Camera is much better than what I thought, Brand and Model are unknown yet though. Again, I don’t know if resolution is interpolated to 8mpx or not, but Photos are pretty good. Here you can find a comparision between front (left) & back (right) camera.
Maximum Supported Video Resolution is 720p, and Quality is just fine as you would expect from a Front-Facing camera.
Audio
Speaker’s Sound lacks a bit of Bass, but it is loud and with a nice clarity.
I have measured its loudness using my Galaxy S4 Microphone, here you’ll see its maximum power.
Unfortunately, it is positioned on the back, so if you place the device on a table you could experience volume issues, but this doesn’t mean that it is a bad thing. What matters here is the quality.
Also in-call, it is pretty loud, sound tends to get distorted a bit at maximum volume, but this device doesn’t support VoLTE (Voice Over LTE) so Call Quality is just the standard AMR-WB (16000 Hz) on 3G Network.
Earpiece is absolutely perfect, its sound is much better than my Galaxy S4, it isn’t extremely loud it produces a clean and high-clarity sound. Probably the device i have ever tested as regards in-call quality.
Device’s microphone is perfect too, I have tested it with many calls, and every single person I have called said me that he/she was able to hear me perfectly, better than how my Voice was recorded using my Galaxy S4.
Summarizing these results, I can say that the Audio Sector has been accurately developed by CUBOT.
Telephony and Mobile Network
Thanks to the 4G Band 20 support (some other Chinese Smartphones don’t have it), I’m almost always and everywhere connected to the 4G Network of my Mobile Network Provider (TIM Italy).
Also 3G Signal Reception is accurate, actually I never managed to get connected to the 2G Network of my Mobile Operator because there was always some 3G Signal available. A good quality Antenna has been used.
4G Network Speed is decent, it highly depends on your Mobile Operator and mine isn’t pretty good. While 3G Network Speed, is just fine. (MT6735 supports maximum 21.1mbps)
Battery Life
When you’ll first charge your device, you’ll find more or less 50% of Charge, I recommend you to charge the device completely before you start to use it. That’s to improve battery calibration accuracy.
Battery Life is just awesome, I managed to reach more than 9 hours of Screen-On Time, with Wi-Fi, 4G, Location & Sync ON. I have also turned on screen-off gestures (double-tap to wake), and during the night I have lost more or less 15% of battery so I don’t recommend to enable them if you are interested in improving battery life.
My second full-charge wasn’t pretty accurate, I have charged the device measuring current with a USB Tester and it recorded just ~4750mAh instead of the 5000mAh declared. I’ll measure this value again after more charging cycles and update this review. I know, declared value is always higher than real value, but nearly 300mAh of Battery Capacity is missing here.
For Daily Usage, even if stressed a lot, this device won’t have any issue regarding battery life, it will be able to reach the end of the day even with some residual charge left.
Also, this device support 5V/2A Quick Charge, so you won’t have to worry about charging time. I can confirm that this is working because the USB Tester measured more or less 2A of charging current.
Software
Even if this is a new device, CUBOT choose to use Android 5.1 release instead of latest Android 6.0 for some unknown reason. Anyway, all seems to work fine. They customized some parts of the software such as Lockscreen, Notification Bar, Launcher and Phone/Contacts app.
Lockscreen reminds the old Android Kitkat, with a Ring to unlock the screen or open Phone/Messaging app.
Launcher is similar to MIUI variant, without App Drawer and with some nice possible customizations.
Notification Bar seems to be similar to TouchWiz variant, with many useful toggles. It is pretty smooth too.
The Phone/Contacts app is something that probably you have already seen somewhere. This is extremely similar to the MIUI v5 variant, just with different colors.
The last customized part of the OS is the Recent Apps screen. It included a Task Killer button and a Used/Free RAM Indicator. It works extremely well.
Just like other last-gen Mediatek Devices, there are some typical features such as Gestures (Somatosensory), Scheduled Power On/Off, etc…
The pure and clean Android Experience hasn’t been impacted so much, only some parts of the OS are not like Stock Android, but nothing that can make its usage harder than usual.
Something that I have really appreciated is that CUBOT doesn’t install any third-party app (except Clean Master, removable), and there are no Chinese words anywhere, so the software has been properly developed for foreign markets. Really nice Company Policy.
Also, the UI is always responsive and smooth, with no lags at all. It’s nice to see that a Chinese company focuses its attention on the software, and I can confirm this because they are also providing frequent OTA Updates for their models.
Benchmarks
I have used 3DMark, Antutu Benchmark, Epic Citadel, GeekBench 3, GFXBench, AndroBench, PCMark (Work) and Vellamo (Browser & CPU Tests) to stress the device to the limit. I won’t test Games or Video Playback because there are already some related tests included in these Benchmark suites.
3DMark – GPU Performance isn’t extremely good, OpenGL 3.1 & 3.0 tests require lots of power, and this is where the GPU falls.
AndroBench – eMMC Performance seems to be pretty high, especially as regards Reading Speed. Pretty good considering that this isn’t the last-gen of eMMC (4.5 instead of 5.0)
Antutu Benchmark – I won’t say a lot about this benchmarks, this isn’t as reliable as others. I’m providing this just for benchmarks lovers.
Epic Citadel – As you can see, Gaming performance isn’t extremely low, there is enough power to handle games without major issues, you just won’t get ultra-high framerates.
GeekBench – CPU Performance is as good as other CPUs with the same configuration (4x Cortex-A53), decent for daily tasks.
GFXBench – Well...GFXBench score is low, really low. This benchmark suite is even more heavy than 3DMark, so you can’t expect a better score here.
PCMark – As you can see, only Video Playback score is a bit low. Pretty good.
Vellamo
Browser score tends to be a bit lower than expected, but Chrome score is just behind another device with an Octa-Core CPU, so this isn’t something that should be ignored.
The same for the CPU score, the device is just behind others with Octa-Core CPUs.
Summaring all results, I can say that this device provides enough power to handle daily tasks and light gaming. You can’t expect more from a Mediatek MT6735 CPU.
Conclusions
Unlike most of all Chinese companies, CUBOT publishes CE, FCC & ROHS certificates about each device, so if you’re interested about CUBOT devices safety, you can just go here: http://www.cubot.net/support/ and read them. This is something rare to find in China, and it makes you think how much a company is interested in foreign markets where Safety comes first. This doesn’t mean that China isn’t interested in Safety, but there are many users that want to know SAR Values, Certificates and so on about a Smartphone before buying it, so this is something pretty useful.
Summarizing all results, I can say that this is one of the best mid-range device available on the market. Great Quality Chassis, Bright and Sharp Display, Superb Battery Life and Excellent Call Quality are the major positive features about this device and I can really recommend it if you are searching for something that satisfies these qualities.
Price is pretty low, the device is sold by almost every shop that sells Chinese Smartphones and it has been certified to work on other markets than China.

Battery Updates.
5000mAh Battery Capacity is confirmed.
About Battery Life, i used the device for two days without charging it, and this is the result. (4G On, WiFi almost everytime Off, Used as WiFi Hotspot, Medium/High Signal). I have rebooted the device 2 times, and starting for the first reboot it stopped recording the Signal stats, so don't worry about it. I haven't used Airplane Mode.

Would be really interested to see if it's possible, as it's had me tearing my hair out, and Cubot seem to think the notifications should be popping up with no solution themselves.

Hey everyone,
I bought my own Leagoo Alfa 2 too, in golden color. A few things and thoughts which you should know before buying:
Pro
- backplate Ion Touch Technology: you can turn it off at all, if it disturbs you, but its worth using it to shoot photos (selfies mainly). However, when using the phone for general stuff, it can be quite disturbing. Waking with double tap on it work crappy, it doesnt recognize double tap many times. I like the function however.
- front side LED flash: its not very strong, but it certainly helps a lot when you have low lights around.
- Leagoo Xender app: you can connect the phone with a PC, Mac, or WP in less than a minute. I dont even understand, why this app is not part of the marketing, it's one of the best apps, I've ever senn. You get a complete file manager through your browser on PC. I dont use cables since I found this app.
- Leagoo OS 1.1: based on Android 5.1 its quite fast until you download all your favourite apps, and pack a lot of things on the phone. Then it can start thinking quite a lot at more hardware demanding operations. For example, when you have more apps running in the background, and you press home button, first you see no app icons, then it starts loading them on the screen one by one. This takes about 2 seconds at most, but still. Otherwise the OS is quite nice, I like it.
- Nice screen, sensitivity and colors.
- No SIM-plate, so you can use 2 microSIM cards and a microSD card at the same time.
- 16GB ROM.
- its cheap
Contra:
- weak battery: screen on time is only a few hours at most.
- very bad camera quality on both sides. However there is a flash on the front side to make selfies, the cameras shoot quite low quality photos.
- Weak hardware, high consumption compared to this.
- Backplate feels crappy and weak.
Conclusion: I'd still recommend the phone, if you need a front side flash, or dont want to buy a more expensive one, or if you like new things like Ion Touch Technology, and the Xender app. Some photos of my stuff:

Introduction
Low-End smartphones are nowadays common in the Chinese market, but LEAGOO with the Alfa 2 managed to create a nice compromise by adding some features that almost all other low-end smartphones are missing.
This is the LEAGOO Alfa 2.
Hardware
The device features a low-end SOC, MT6580, that is just enough for basic tasks and for ultra-light gaming. Also the RAM isn’t high, just 1 GB, reducing multitasking efficiency. But, there is also something that can’t be considered as low-end. Rear Camera is a Sony IMX219 (13mpx), Soft-Touch keys are retroilluminated and there is a nice TouchPad on the back. Maybe we shouldn’t consider it a real low-end device, should we? Follow my next paragraphs to know more.
Unboxing

LEAGOO choose to give to the device a nice and clean design, similar to devices with Metal chassis, but this is made of Plastic. It feels pretty solid though, even better than my Galaxy S4.
The Alfa 2 is 14.4x7.3x0.7cm and weights 149 g. A compact device that can be handled easily in your hands.
On the front side there is the 2.5D Curved Display. On 5 inches smartphones this feature is now becoming pretty common. The glass is enclosed in a Plastic Frame, while on the upper front side of the device features a Front-Facing Camera supported by a Flashlight, an Earpiece and the Sensors hole that includes Light, Proximity and Gesture Sensors.
The lower front side of the device there are the Soft-Keys Navigation Buttons (retroilluminated), and the Home Button (circle key) works as a Notification LED. Sincerely i love this feature, I hope that also other smartphones from LEAGOO will have it.
On the back side, there is the Plastic back cover. The upper rear side of the device features a slightly protunding Camera supported by a dual-tone flashlight, and a particular TouchPad used to interact with the UI.
The lower rear side of the device features a noticeable Brand Logo and a large Speaker hole.
Chassis is Slim and well-built with all keys on the right side. There is no key rattling here.
Device
Screen
The device has an IPS Screen made by Himax, and it seems to be pretty good. Screen Brightness is decent, good enough to be used under direct sunlight.
I have used my Galaxy S4 Light Sensor to measure its maximum brightness. I don’t have a professional Lumen Meter, so this (Lux) is the only value that I can provide you.
About Viewing Angles the screen behaves pretty well, one of the best screen I have ever tested as regards this area.
Image Contrast and Saturation are accurate, you can use the MiraVision menu to customize this values.
Camera
Back Camera (Sony IMX219) seems to work pretty good, but, just like almost all Chinese Smartphones, the noise level is a bit high. As I always say, if a company works a bit on the Camera Software this issue can be easily fixed.
With (left) & Without HDR (right), photos under direct sunlight aren’t pretty bad.
Flashlight works pretty well on both sides. Yes, this device has also a front flashlight.
Back Camera
Front Camera

Nothing negative to say about the in-call/telephony quality.
Telephony, Mobile Network & WiFi
Being a low-end device, there is no 4G support. 3G Signal Reception is accurate though, with no issues at all with Mobile Data speed or Signal Stability.
Built-in Wi-Fi supports 2.4GHz networks, and using my Home internet connection I managed to get decent speed. (I have a 100/20 VDSL connection, WiFi gets connected to 135mbps – probably not real -)
Battery Life
Battery seems to be enough to get at least one day of medium-usage, unfortunately PCMark crashes after a long while (probably due to low RAM).

Anyway, built-in Battery Real Capacity seems to be a bit lower than declared value (2600mAh vs 2313mAh).
Software
Almost everything has been customized. LEAGOO OS, based on Android 5.1, seems to have some nice features that help users to enjoy Android even better. (just like Xiaomi does with its MIUI ROM). I’ll show you some customized parts of the system with some screenshots.
Just like other last-gen Mediatek Devices, there are some typical features such as Gestures, Scheduled Power On/Off, etc…
The UI is always responsive, but there is a serious software issue. Screen Refresh rate has been set to 43hz, so the device doesn’t fell smooth at all. I have already asked LEAGOO to fix this bug, because using the device with this Refresh Rate causes headaches. It is like slow motion.
As regards the Rear TouchPad management (called Ion Smart Touch), it can be configured via the Settings apps and its configuration is extremely user-friendly.
Even LED Notification Light can be configured easily. You can even disable the Hall Sensor if you are using a Flip Cover.
Benchmarks

3DMark – GPU Performance isn’t too bad, but you have to consider that there is no OpenGL 3.0 support here so only OpenGL 2.0 tests can be executed.
AndroBench – eMMC Performance is much better that expected, pretty good considering the low-end SOC.
Antutu Benchmark – I won’t say a lot about this benchmarks, this isn’t as reliable as others. I’m providing this just for benchmarks lovers.
Epic Citadel – As you can see, Gaming performance isn’t extremely low, there is enough power to handle games without major issues, you just won’t get ultra-high framerates. Consider also that there is the screen refresh rate bug that limits FPSs to 43 maximum.
GeekBench – CPU Performance is as good as other CPUs with the same configuration (4x Cortex-A7).
GFXBench – GFXBench result is….ultra-low. You have to forget heavy games on this device.
PCMark – Except for Video Playback Score, it isn’t pretty bad.
Summaring all results, I would have expected lower performance but I was wrong. Device’s performance is good enough for basic tasks, and it can be used also for some light gaming without having to deal with major issues.
Conclusions
This is my first time that I have to express an opinion about a low-end device. LEAGOO managed to add some mid-range features on a cheap device, something pretty rare to find nowadays.
I can recommend it if you want a cheap, but complete, device for basic usage.

Would also like to hear how you experienced the RAM issues, say if all a user will do is take photos, calls, text and really not much else the RAM will be fine? Thanks for feedback.

Unfortunately no, it seems that it has been abandoned leaving more space to new devices such as the T1.
RAM Issues are here while running benchmarks or using heavy websites with Chrome. Normal usage doesn't seem to be affected too much.

Huawei honor V8 has made some change in its appearance. First it abandons past ID bezel-less design and then uses the traditional ultra narrow bezel. While it keeps the screen to body ratio, it controls the black border of the screen. Even though it's white version under the screen on, it doesn't make us feel uncomfortable. In antutu test, Huawei honor V8 has reached 9,9000 score, although it has some distance with Snapdragon 820 and Apple A9 processor, but at this point the practical experience and the system basically have no difference.
In Geekbench3 tests, Huawei honor v8 has won the mononuclear 1916, multi-core 6616 points, multi-core performance is particularly good, beyond the Snapdragon 810 and Samsung Exynos 7420 processor. Now Xiaomi mi5 with Snapdraon 820 only has 5,000 score. So Honor v8 with Kirin950 has its advantage in multi-core performance.

of course they have different in camera, Huawei honor V8 has dual camera both with 12MP Back and front, but huawei p9 just has 8MP front camera, 12mp back camera.
Does it have 3 mics as it has Mate 8? Does it have stereo speakers?

Thank you for your answer. I use Mate 8 at the moment, and I'm interested if I change Mate 8 to Honor V8, will I have better audio quality. First of all I use phone on the loudspeaker very often. I like to work on the keyboard and speak without headphones. If V8 has 3 mics as it Mate8 has and V8 has 2 speakers (as you mentioned) instead of one on Mate8 I think it will be a good change.

No problem . Some chinese description remain in the rom. It will update successively to nougat 7.0. There's no risk because it's a chinese phone for chinese market ONLY so the rom is only for this phone and area. No mistake is possible. i got Al10 and Al20 and they are now on Nougat 7.0 and <EMUI5.0.

Identification
With Xiaomi's plethora of variants under a same model, it is important to start by identifying the product in order to set the expectations right.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A Prime
Redmi: regroups the low cost phones as opposed to the Mi, which is more middle range to flagship.
Note: indicates a 5.5" size device (although I've seen 5.5" Mi phones without that denomination).
A: indicates the entry level phones.
Prime: The sample I'm reviewing here is actually the 32GB ROM version of the Prime variant (120€/140$). That suffix is not always mentioned by the shops but has its importance.
The Prime specifications are a notch above the bottom-of-the-low-range with a better chipset (Snapdragon 435 vs 425), more memory (3/32GB vs 2/16GB) and a 16MP selfie camera (vs 5MP). The Prime version also adds a fingerprint sensor. A higher spec. version with 4/64GB is expected soon.
The cheapest non-Prime 16GB version is at 100€/120$.

Unpacking and Design
The compact box is just the size of the phone, with some extra depth for the accessories: a charger, a USB cable, a SIM tray extractor pin and a leaflet.
The 5A has a classic design and yet, looks nice, slim and well finished.
Its light weight (153gr) and thinness (7.7mm) makes you regret that no hard case in the box. At least, there quite a good choice of accessories to choose from already.
A long 3-in-1 tray takes 2 nano-SIM's and one MicroSD together.
The micro USB is still used and there's no quick charger although the technology is supported. Using a spare one from Doogee, it took about 1 hour to full charge.
Cameras: "Only" one per side...and that's great news!
Xiaomi does not make any fuss about the camera sensors inside, and honestly, I don't mind if they are from Samsung, Sony or even Omnivision!
The result is far better than most manufacturers trumpeting the latest IMX on-board while ruining it with sub-par software.
The front camera features a LED flash, a resolution of 16.0MP, an aperture of f2.0 and a Phase Detection Auto Focus.
If the advertising illustrations of the product were not clear enough, this phone is targeted at the selfie and ussie takers!
All the expected options are present, including advanced "face beauty" settings, some funny filters, and a face detection that tries to evaluate the gender and age (not always accurate with toys...).
The back camera is "only" a 13MP, f2.2, and (shock horror) there is only one!
And still...it makes all those double-camera models look pathetic in comparison!
For those who expected a double camera just to improve their blur background shots, Google Camera can use the embedded gyroscope to achieve a similar effect, as well as the 360 Photo Sphere shots.
The camera is fast in all aspects: launching, focusing, shooting.
With the appropriate option activated (under Lock screen & password), launching the camera app and taking a shot takes no more than a second!
2x optical zoom means no loss of pixels up to that level, with the digital zoom kicking in afterward, effectively zooming on the existing pixels. The shots below show different level of zoom (0x, 2x and 4x) in low light. (see original review for full size view)
There is a decent set of options, even if they are not always grouped in the most convenient way between options and settings menus.
MIUI 8 and bloatware
The phone came with MIUI 8.5.4 and an OTA update to 8.5.8 was available. It is based on Android Nougat (7.1.2). MIUI 9.0 is due soon after the Golden Week (黄金周) holidays with hopefully, a global ROM.
I used the option to select an alternate home screen to install the excellent Yandex launcher, tried previously with the Bluboo S1.
Where is Google Play?
There is no global ROM yet for the Redmi Note 5A, and since the Chinese ROM does not include Google Play, a bit of DIY is needed to install it and configure the permission and battery saving options.
I first tried a certain Google Installer 2.0 which didn't work for me.
The easiest way has been to restore one a backup made available on miui forum.
As always, MIUI is generous in bloatware, although there's a few worthwhile Mi applications in the lot. A good deal of them can be uninstalled but some useless services, considered as system apps, will remain active.
Fingerprint scanner: lightning fast!
I found most fingerprint scanners to work well and fast enough...until now!
This one reacts just... instantly!
I would have prefered it located at the front, but I'll get use to it. There's simply no way I return to the slower ones!
Performance:
Snapdragon 435 Octa Core 1.4GHz: This chipset is aimed at the mid/low-range market. It may not the fastest one around but it's certainly not sluggish.
The "only" HD but nevertheless excellent IPS screen is a perfect fit for the Snapdragon 435 and the phone works smoothly through any task.
The phone feels much faster in general than its Mediatek counterpart with similar benchmark score (MT6750T).
Geekbench: single core:675 / Multi-core: 2581

HD "only" screen:
The screen is not full HD but [email protected], and yet it's bright and sharp, ideal for reading ebooks, which I tried for a few hours.
There's even a schedulable Reading Mode to reduce the background glare at bed time.
This IPS screen is almost as good as an AMOLED with vibrant colors, deep blacks and excellent contrasts.
The Contrast and Colors under Display also allow to adjust the overall color temperature.
Communications
Phone calls / Sound quality
Sound quality is of tradition with Xiaomi products, and that's even true with their cheapest IP cameras, so no bad surprise here, the sound is crystal-clear during phone calls and the speakers are perfect for voice and can go quite loud without damage for music.
The in-call interface is functional with all the necessary options available.
Networks:
On the mobile data side, 4G is supported but I'm only getting HSPA+, and the easiest way to find out why is to visit frequencycheck.com. In my case, there's very little B3 (1800Hz) coverage in my area.
Wi-Fi reception is good but seems limited to 2.4GHz, although the 5GHz band should be supported by the Snapdragon 425 Processor.
Notification LED (I missed you so much!):
It rings loud (and louder if a call is not answered), it vibrates and, if you miss it, there's even a LED!
Kudos to Xiaomi for not ditching this essential option to spare a few cents!
Battery life
The advertised capacity of the 3080mAh battery is rather modest but probably the actual capacity unlike many competitors.
On the other hand, Qualcomm Snapdragon is well known for its power efficiency and the 435 Octa Core is not the most demanding chipset.
I achieved 24 hours of mixed use with some intensive sessions (all the de-MIUIzation, lots of pictures taken, frequent interaction, benchmarks, ...)
There are many clever optimization options under the Battery & performance menu but I didn't even use the battery saver.
IR Blaster:
The 5A can be used as an IR remote controller. The native Mi Remote application mostly supports the smart home devices from Xiaomi but also some popular brands of TV and set top boxes. However I could not get it work with any device, even my LG TV.
As an alternative, I've installed "Universal TV Remote" from Twinone which works great, even with my old X10 IR relay.
GPS: 20 satellites under 4 seconds...that should do the job.
Conclusion: so, who is that phone for?
On paper, the Xiaomi 5A Prime is inferior to its bigger brothers on almost every aspect: smaller battery, lower pixel density, slower processor, slightly heavier, a bit thicker, ...
My opening title "The schoolgirl selfie companion?" (just a tad bit sarcastic) reflects my opinion before testing this phone.
Now, I realize that the Redmi Note 5A Prime is a silent killer for the competitors in that price range!
The Redmi Note 5A Prime (in 3/32GB) turns out to be a high quality smartphone and if the components are not all the latest and fastest, there's been no compromise on the quality and the cameras are possibly the best available under 150€.
Unlike the very widespread trends amongst entry-level smartphones, the Redmi Note 5A Prime does not make false promises, but delivers exactly what's announced.
The current version is a potential source of frustration for those relying on Google ecosystem, and I can't wait to see a Global Version, with MIUI 9, hopefully very soon, so we won't have to put our hands in the grease anymore.
The 3/32GB Prime variant, priced 119€/139.99$ with coupon JSMTA (expiry date: 2017-10-7) is by far the most sensible choice in the 5A family.
The other variants are:
Redmi Note 5A (not Prime): 100€/120$
There are too many concessions (no fingerprint sensor, smaller front camera, smaller chipset, only 16GB of storage) for almost the same price.
Redmi Note 5A (Prime) "4/64" with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage: 220€/260$. There are not enough advantages to justify the higher price.
For that budget, look at the Mi 5X/A1 instead!)

There was alot of grumbling that the Redmi Note 4 had different sensors and from what I've seen from the sample pictures, the differences are significant. The OV version was the worst with some weird tint (maybe it was just with the on) but it shows that you cannot ignore the different sensor types. Xiaomi is taking a risk with these sort of low brow bait and switch marketing tactics.
Restore IMEI?
Hi guys, i have an Redmi note 5A which i got with China Rom, and in atempt to flash Global Rom in test point i accidentaly flashed rom from Redmi 5A which lead me to lose the IMEI of the device and i cant sign in into my mi account to unlock bootloader and restore it.. I have flashed the latest China Stable Rom and the China Developer Rom from in EDL mode but that didnt restore my IMEI neither i can log in into my Mi Account..
What can i do?

Poptel P9000 Max Review
Looking great. I like it because of 9000mAH battery capacity, 5.5" FHD screen, and 4 LED light for torch. I hope you will be add the review soon.

I ordered this from GearBest, and it's currently in the process of being shipped to Canada. If you guys have any questions, let me know. When it arrives, I can answer them for you. I will also post my impressions later.
This phone claims to be a "tough" & "rugged" phone. And I will put that to the test in real life situations. I work out all week in the gym, and my phone routinely falls or gets exposed to water.
My last phone was the "Leagoo Elite 1". Here were my problems with my Leagoo (and what I will be looking for improvement for, in the Poptel):
I routinely listen to streaming music, watch, & download videos on my phone. After 6 hours in the gym, with this media usage, my Leagoo battery drops to 5% to 10% battery. The Poptel P9000 claims to have a long-lasting battery...so I will be excited to see excited to see if it can survive my heavy daily usage.
Apparently, both the "Poptel P9000" and my "Leagoo Elite 1" utilize "Gorilla Glass 3". This claims to be strong. But my Leagoo suffered a crack on the left side from a short accidental drop on hard surface. Through that crack, the screen messed up due to small water exposure. So right off the bat, I am a little skeptical about the P9000 glass material.
My "Leagoo Elite 1" had terrible OS glitches. If you held the home button long to bring up the task manager, the entire OS would crash. This was never fixed in the two years I had the phone. Then an even worse problem was that the Leagoo camera or background service installed a program every anti-virus flagged as a trojan. This happened after the first year after one of their updates. It was very difficult to disable, and while installed it created many performance & internet issues. Speaking of updates, there hasn't been a single one in the last year for my "Leagoo Elite 1". So I will see how much Poptel supports their phone. But I am not so confident, because I looked at their FaceBook page, and it seems PopTel is already releasing a new phone...so I am worried they may stop supporting the P9000.
Poptel P9000 Max Quick Review
I am writing the review just after receiving the Poptel P9000 Max Orange version.
It’s available in three colors: Green, Orange, and Black. Let’s start, what I got in the box?
Unboxing
The Poptel P9000 max comes with a lot of accessories. The box is containing the phone, User Manual, Warranty Certificate, USB Type-C cable, OTG Type-C cable (Also for Reverse Charge), 9V/2A Quick Charger and screen protector. The earphone is here in the box too.
Design
Starting from the design, good use of rubber and plastic to protect the phone from shock and drop. The device feels really solid, probably one of the best-rugged phones in the price category, and overall the build quality is decent. Being a rugged phone, it isn't possible to expect the most compact device. Due to the huge battery and body cover with multiple layers of rubber, I feel it cumbersome and bulky (16.80 x 8.30 x 1.70 cm / 6.61 x 3.27 x 0.67 inches approximately for weight 320g); although heavy it seems to be balanced in handling.
On the front side, Poptel adopts 5.5-inch FHD 1920 x 1080p resolution, the glass uses Corning 3rd generation gorilla. The upper front side of the device features a Front-Facing Camera, an Earpiece, and the Sensors hole that includes Light and Proximity Sensors. As regards the lower front side, there isn't anything at all except a nice-looking Poptel logo, primary microphone, and type-c port. On-screen keys are used here.
The upper back side of the device features a big camera sensor and 4 high LED lights. On the right side of the LED lights, there is a little hole that seems to be for the secondary microphone. The fingerprint sensor located just below the LED lights. On the lower back side, there isn't anything at all except a stereo speaker grills and some words about the device protection certification.
On the right side of the phone, there is Volume up and down buttons. Another button located on the right side is for direct open the torch or use it as a camera shutter.
On the left side of the phone, there is one button for On/Off the device and card slot.
There is an audio port located on the top of the phone.
On the bottom of the phone, there is USB-Type C port.
Screen:
The Poptel P9000 Max adopts 5.5-inch FHD 1920 x 1080p resolution, As regards the screen, it is just perfect. It’s Bright enough for a decent outdoor usage. I found it pretty good, with excellent color accuracy and an overall nice viewing experience.
Camera:
An outdoor phone needs to be a great camera. Thanks, Poptel for not adding the fake dual camera. Its equipped with a 13MP camera, the manufacturer of the camera not mentioned. The autofocus works quickly, on-screen shutter button and physical button both work very quick. The pictures are usually sharp, the colors look natural and the contrasts are also great. Even in Low light, the Poptel can still deliver great images. It has a 5MP Front camera for a selfie.
Very good in daylight / good light, but in low light, you can't get the result.
Hardware:
It’s powered by MTK6750V octa-core processor; it can run at the rate of 1.5 GHz. With the support of the 4GB RAM, 64GB ROM, and a Mali T860 GPU, the processor can perform every task smoothly. That’s mean you can watch HD videos and play heavy games without any problem.
Battery:
As we know that, outdoor phone need to have a big battery with quick charger and it is a vital part of the rugged phone. Poptel p9000 max has 9000mAH battery with 9V/2A charger.
Software:
Poptel chooses to use a pure Android OS for this device. It runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with May 2018 security patches and no bloatware pre-installed. The OS feels smooth.
Audio:
Poptel added one stereo speaker system which provides pretty high and decent sound quality. It has Minor distortion at maximum volume. Overall there is no major problem in the audio section.
IP68 certification: it has IP68 certification that means it can survive in water, dust, and unexpected drop.
OTG: its supporting OTG function and it can charge your Android and IOS devices
Sensors: if we talking about the sensors than Poptel P9000 Max comes with all important sensors like an Ambient Light Sensor, E-Compass, Geomagnetic Sensor, Gyroscope, Proximity Sensor.
NFC: Thankful to Poptel for adding NFC on the device.
GPS: Excellent GPS result, too many satellites with strong signals I got outdoor and indoor as well.

Where are the SIM cards located and what size are they? What is/are the best US major carriers that support the phone? I have Red Pocket right now, paid like $220 for 365 days of service (5 GB data unlimited text/calls) using a Moto G5+. The P9000 would be to replace this phone. The card slot on the side is for a microSD card? - if so what is the max capacity it can handle? I went to the product page and these question are not answered there.

I disagree with this evaluation.
Your samples look pretty dark & rich. As if there's too much contrast.
There was another recent YouTube review - which compared pictures from the "Poptel P9000" & the "Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro" (at 5:00 in the video):

As you can see from this comparison, it's the same problem.
The Xiaomi's photos are more brighter and cleaner looking - while Poptel's colors look overly rich & dark.
More importantly...human skin looks much better on Xiaomi's camera - whereas Poptel's camera makes human's look ugly & pimply!

Coming from Xiaomi (with its custom OS that conflicts with many apps) & Leagoo (which installed a widely flagged TROJAN via their camera "beauty" app)...the fact that Poptel is providing a normal Android installation & no bloatware is much appreciated! :angel:

This is so unfair. I bought the P9000 thinking it was new...and they would at least support/upgrade it for one or two years.
Then all of a sudden, they release this new model.
What especially bothers me is that the "P9000" has Android 7...and they're saying the upcoming "P10" model will have Android 8.1.
To me, this sounds like they'll never update the P9000! :crying:

What is the status on rooting this phone? The bootloader is definitely unlockable (I just unlocked mine) but before I try anything else I wanted to check on experience with root.
Guys, I am having a crazy experience with this phone. :crying:
So a few days ago, this phone was delivered.
And now I discover the audio jack is defective :crying:.
When I asked them for help on FaceBook, they gave me a strange response.
So I own "Xiaomi Mi In-Ear Headphones Pro".
I bought this from Amazon, and it works in ALL devices I ever tried (laptops, phones, PS4, etc.).
But the support guy from Poptel told me it wouldn't work in their phone because "P9000 MAX can only match the headphone of 18MM pin".
I never heard of such a thing, so I asked for more information in a follow-up.
They responded: "3.5mm jack is ok, but the length shoud be 18mm".
I listen to music all day, and love Xiaomi headphones. And they tell me it doesn't work with their phones.
Okay, I thought, let me just use their stock headphones.
Then today...even their stock headphones stop working!
It's clearly a defective hardware issue. Something is wrong with their audio port.
So now is the big test. I asked them for help tonight.
If you are curious about Poptel's customer service...stay tuned.
I will let you know how they respond...hopefully, they have good customer service. :good:

Hey guys! Great news! I contacted Poptel via FaceBook.
I showed them video proof of my technical problem. They gave me no trouble.
We explored many options such as complete phone replacement or partial refund.
I chose partial refund (which was no small amount), based on typical cost for audio-port repair in my area.
This is because school was starting, and I had desperate need for a phone.
Poptel sent my Paypal account the exact amount discussed. I am now able to take my phone to a local repair shop for possible solution.
I have spent a few weeks with this phone, and set it up with lots of different media & workout apps.
I've used it for jogging and weight-lifting.
I've dropped it accidentally on hard tiles and carpet.
It lives up to its durable claims.
Later on, I will post some pictures of a great armband I found that works with this phone. It's especially useful if you use this phone outdoors & during physical activities like jogging.
The only issues I ever had was with apps. But those were app developer issues, unrelated to anything the manufacturer controls. One of the best things about this phone is the Android stock OS. This means you never have to worry that some strange OS issue is interfering with your apps. All my app problems were solved quickly after contacting developers & applying Play Store updates.
If anyone has any specific questions, let me know.
I'm a big expert in this phone now, and I can try to answer them in more detail.
But keep in mind, for me, this is more of a media device. I don't use this for phone calls.
So I can tell you more about performance & playback.
