I was so excited when I learned that the Fire TV would play XBMC (now Kodi) that I bought two units. I followed a forum guide that I lost the link to, but the guide got me to root and mod the units, install the Xposed Framework, Google Framework and Play Store, TowelRoot, SU, etc and his modded XBMC 14.0-alpha2 apk so it was set for launcher intent, and ever since, I've been pretty happily using the boxes to just stream my mkv's from my Windows SMB shares (like the WDTV boxes did that I replaced with the AFTs) but now I can't upgrade my Kodi to the latest release, and I also can no longer run the Amazon App Store from XBMC, which means I can't the Fire TV optimized apps (Facebook, Youtube, etc). Can someone recommend a way out of this mess? I want to save my paths from xbmc, but other than that, I don't have a lot of personalization on either box to care about, so I could just factor reset and start from scratch.
My needs are:
1. Need to be able to run Kodi and update whenever available
2. Need to run the Amazon App Store
3. Need to change the boot to launch into Kodi
What's my best bet? I'm very confused about what the right direction would be.
Thanks,
Jesse

So what's your question? You said you rooted the device & installed Kodi etc on it.. Not sure why you are asking what direction to go with?
Unless your first paragraph is some sort of typo..
Follow this here if you need to root the device..
Update to latest rootable FW.
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-setup-a-new-fire-tv-without-blocking-root/
Root
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-root-the-amazon-fire-tv/
Block updates
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-block-ota-update-for-amazon-fire-tv-and-keep-root-access/
After that point, you can install the Google play store if you want, sideload Kodi apk onto the device. Use a custom launcher to load right into Kodi and bypass the default Amazon home screen. Once you do install Kodi and a launcher you can always go back to the default Amazon screen but just launching the KFTV launcher within Kodi.. So you never really lose access to it.
All that kind of info can be found here

Sorry if I was unclear. My issue is kinda buried in my first post. When I wrote "modded XBMC 14.0-alpha2 apk so it was set for launcher intent", I"m not using a straight vanilla Kodi release, but a modded apk which appears to the unit as a launcher, and thus replaced the launcher on the unit so that it would boot straight into Kodi. What I need to do is upgrade the version of XBMC/Kodi to the latest. Should I scrub my boxes back to stock and use a different method to launch Kodi without the Amazon launcher? What is the preferred method of running Kodi as a launcher? Is there an alternative launcher replacement that I should be using instead?
Thanks and sorry for the ambiguity.

Just upgrade the current version you got using the below instructions. After that, just do the launcher mod from the wiki page I linked up top. No need to wipe your box, might as well maintain some of your XBMC config/setup.
For the cleanest launcher.. use Xposed and rbox module (Requires root). Which is described in the wiki page I linked.
XBMC can be upgraded through ADB without losing your settings. To do this, you must use a newer version of the package already installed on the machine.
Download the package to your machine
Make sure ADB is connected to the Fire TV
Run adb install -r <apk-file-name>
Installation is complete when it reports the message "Success"
XBMC will still go through the "first run" screen the first time it is launched but your settings will remain intact.

Hey guy's im haveing trouple finding 14.0 apk and above can you please help...
So I side-loaded the 14.0a3 and restored KFTV Launcher. After that, I side loaded the FiredLauncher and rbox module and now it boots straight into the updated Kodi release without losing settings so I guess this is as good as its gonna get but I'm a little confused. It looks like the KFTV launcher is still launching first before the FiredLauncher, which means KFTV is still using a ton of memory before Kodi starts. Can I prevent that from happening and boot directly to Fired?
I finally managed to get spmc to show up on the home screen of my fire tv stick and it will open the app when i click the icon. But if I click information it still acts as if i did not purchase it and when I try to purchase it says this app is not compatible with my device. It also does not show up in the app menu so if it ever disappears from the main screen i have to go all the way to settings etc. Is this how it is supposed to behave and will it still get auto updates?
This depends on how you did this, there's a variety of options I've seen on getting SPMC on the homescreen, using llama or even the deregister/register method. But in either case, no sideloaded apps will not be auto updated, you will have to manually update them. infact SPMC released an update yesterday 13.4.0.
Amazon has yet to officially mark SPMC as compatible with FTV, and at this point it looks like they may not ever do it. So if you used the deregister/register trick, it showing incompatible is what I would expect to see as normal.
I just updated to the new version I was worried I would have to restore my whole xbmc backup but when I installed the latest apk it just overwrote the current one, cleared the cache and did the initial first time run thing. Then it loaded straight back to my setup. Out of curiosity I have just been installing the launcher version on all my devices ftv or stick, does it make a difference?

The launcher version is made to function as the default launcher if you wanted that option. However it requires root and rbox's xposed module to make it work on fire TV. So you're just not see'ing any difference in it, if/when you gain root it will make a difference depending on how you want it set up.

Yea I have it on all my rooted aftvs and just out it on my ftv sticks as we. Just making sure there's no disadvantage to having it on a non rooted device.
So this thread will be about the general state of Xposed on our shield TV's. If you have any questions or need help related to Xposed on the Shield TV, feel free to ask.
First Things First, Xposed does work on the 2.1 firmware. (If someone on the Vulcan preview could chime in about 3.0 that would be great.)
Steps to install Xposed on 2.1 (Assuming you already have a working recovery)
1) Download xposed-vXX-sdk22-arm64.zip and XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk from this thread.
either adb push it to /sdcard/ or use a thumb drive etc etc.
2) ADB reboot recovery
3) Preform a full backup IMPORTANT (I did 2 backups, one to internal storage, and another to external usb, better safe than sorry!)
4) Flash xposed-vXX-sdk22-arm64.zip (Wiping cache after is optional)
4) Reboot to system, Booting will take longer than usual, it took about 5 minutes on my 16gb, but could take longer.
5) Install XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk (ES file explorer works great for this, you can download it from playstore)
6) Open up Xposed installer once installed, select framework, and it should show Xposed framework version 80 is active. If not, repeat steps 1-4, If you're still having problems, ask here. From the installer you can install modules, just make sure to activate them and reboot!
Steps to install Xposed on 3.0 MM (with a working recovery)
1) Download xposed-vXX-sdk23-arm64.zip and XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk from this thread.
either adb push it to /sdcard/ or use a thumb drive etc etc.
2) ADB reboot recovery
3) Preform a full backup IMPORTANT (I did 2 backups, one to internal storage, and another to external usb, better safe than sorry!)

I've only tried 2 modules so far, one works, one doesn't. If You have tried a module and it does or doesn't work, please comment with the version and I'll add it to this list.

Hi,
Have you tried with shield 3.0? Does it works with systemless root?
Change in install procedure?
Thank you for your feedback

Haven't tried it yet, been super busy with school, currently running 3.0 stock (not even rooted). If you try it, let me know if it works! I don't see why it shouldn't

Nope, did not work for me

Arf!
I haven't time to test now.
But seems unfortunate...
Hope there will be a workaround!

I installed Xposed on the 3.0 update. Had no issues. Also installed Xprivacy. Hoping to bypass mlb blackouts with mlb.TV.
I went through the standard process for installing it. Basically the exact steps of the OP but the newest version of the framework.

App Settings module works perfectly.
Xposed and root are working fine for me on 3.0 update, I'll write another guide maybe later today, but the steps are the same, just with the updated zip (SDK 23 for MM).
Brad, is Xprivacy working for you? Any problems?

Xprivacy seems to be working well, except ondemand doesnt seem to pop up for any, or at least some, of the storage restrictions..........im not sure if xprivacy has been updated for marshmellow, so im not sure if storage restriction is working, i will pay attention next time i install an app from scratch........

Andy can u help me.I have installed xposed and it says it is active.Than i instaled App Settings and when i try to change Dpi or other app setting nothing happens.(i have stock 6.0 ...3.0 rooted)
Installed root and xposed on 3.0 no problems, just needed to use pen stick because adaptive storage. Cannot seem to access the bootloader via hardware method (wait 3 secs then hold power button). I Tried many variations of it to no avail... Also I have to reflash the boot loader every time to access it. If I choose kernel recovery from bootloader it just shows the android with a warning / error.
Using Xposed mod Unbeloved Hosts and Lucky Patcher. Between the two I can filter 99% of all ads.
keep getting a error when tryin to flash with twrp on my nvidia shield tv whats is the corret zip for my device? Thanks all.
K I got Xposed installed MM 3.0 But when I use KODI if I have a stream playing it stops a few mins in, If I stop all of the modules in xposed and restart KODI Starts to work again, no probleems streaming. So it has to be Xposed or one of the modules I was using. Luck Patcher, App settings, Xprivecy, yourtube, MinGaurd (Not sure full name der) , YouTube AdAway.
Just installed the latest version of Xposed following the steps on the guide. I'm on 3.3 update, rooted. No problems so far. Will test some modules and report back.

I finally unlocked my bootloader and rooted my Shield after using it for about a year. I use Xposed regularly on my Nexus 6P but wanted to know if anyone has information about Youtube Adaway Module working (or alternative). So far seems like it doesn't work everywhere.
Are there any other modules worth getting on Xposed for Android TV? Perhaps something for Xbox 360 Controllers?
Also would be very interested in Youtube HDR if anyone has a workaround seeing that it's supported officially by Youtube but their Youtube for Android TV app literally hasn't been updated since April so I take it we'll have to wait a few months. Not fun considering my 4K HDR tv has been waiting a year for this.
Thanks in Advance.

Well, Youtube Adaway Module it's working for me. About 1 hr of continuous playback and no one single ad. Xprivacy and Marshmallow SD Fix working too.
Now that Nougat has been out for months and Xposed not working on it, has anyone figured out a way to block Youtube ads? I know arter97 has patched youtube apks but nothing yet for the Shield.
Does Adguard work on Android TV?
Hi,
I just got a fire phone and I'm facing multiple issues. It updated to 4.6.6.1 once i started it. Now I want it to act like a normal android phone so I installed google now launcher.
Next thing i wanted to do is to customize the laucher. So I did research how to root it. Did it with kingroot and afterwards followed various instructions to change to superSu. Non of them worked. Neither via adb nor SuperSU me nor the terminal version. only rooted when on kingsroot. SuperSU binaries also would never succesfuly update. Anyways.
So after I got the root, I wanted to install Xposed Framework to finally customize the launcher. Now xposed is saying, that it is not (yet) compatible wit the ANdorid SDK Version 19 or my Prozessor architecture. (armeabi-v7a)
I'm running the phone on german language. Don't know what to do anymore with both. SUpersu and Xposed. Appreciate any help.
So you already bought Super-Sume-Pro? Good, because removing / replacing Kingroot was possible even with the (early) free version of Super-Sume (9.1.6).
Download this old version* of Kinguser.
Yes, like always, it's classified as a virus / exploit / PUP, because it uses very aggressive methods of achieving root.
"But Bingo, this is only Kinguser, I need Kingroot."
No you don't. I used this combo many times, it always worked, from the latest version down to Fire OS 4.6.1 when I first tried it.
Uninstall your current version of Kingroot / Kinguser and remove the leftover folders from the internal storage.
Install the old version (disable auto update within in the app, it can be quite annoying), let it "achieve" root, disable WiFi if you want.
Run Super-Sume. It will have no problem replacing Kinguser with 2 steps.
Download this compatible version of the Xposed Installer.
Install framework, etc. You know the drill.
For BusyBox, I'd recommend either Stericson's version or Meefik's.
I tested one of my devices with 4.6.6.1 and the above mentioned customizations (mainly to enjoy microG on Fire OS ^^), so I can say it definitely works.
* Had to use OCH, because the "good guys" like Dropbox and Google Drive won't allow hosting / linking this file, since it's a bad azz virüs.

Hmmmm...I don't know what to say. I just used it today after returning a phone to stock Fire OS for my niece. The only thing I can think of is I'm using an earlier version of Kingroot? I'm using KingRoot-4.1.0.524.apk if that matters. I can try to PM it to you, but I'm not sure it will work because, as Bingo mentioned, it is seen as a virus by most servers.
Yup, I also used the oldest version I had on my PC, this way I can avoid the cat and mouse game between Kingroot and Super-Sume ^^ ... well, for the Fire Phone and some "older" KitKat devices that is.
But since 'coolni' popped his Fire Phone cherry just recently, he naturally went for a current version of Kingroot and he's also on the latest Fire OS release; thought process = better bring the big guns so that root is guaranteed.

Hi guys,
I have an aftv2 rooted and using rbox pre-rooted 5.0.5 rom. I also tried pre-rooted 5.2.1 rom, and I would like to stay on this latest version, however I want to have the ability to click the home button and go directly to the homepage on SPMC.
As of right now, I tried pre-rooted rom 5.0.5 with firestarter but when pressing the home button it brings me SPMC but not on the homepage. (and it is glitchy, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't). So my understanding is that in order to achieve this, I have to setup SPMC as launcher. How can I do this? I already downloaded SPMC launcher apk, and read a lot of threads with no concrete answer. Right now it seems that the only option is to install xposed and rbox mods. Is this correct? or is there any other option?
And I assume the rbox mods to set up an alternative launcher still works on pre-rooted 5.2.1 rom?
cheers
