Lineage OS breaks video playback on 20170810 release - anyone else? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I've had my M8 for some time now which started life as a GPE bought directly from Google. I got it second hand and shortly after getting it, loaded Cyanogenmod on it. When Lineage replaced Cyanogenmod, I switched over and have been taking the weekly builds without many issues.
When I installed the 14.1-20170810 nightly build, video playback with VLC stopped working. - I get a grey screen. when trying to playback any video file. If I go back to 14.1-20170803 nightly build, VLC is back and working properly again.
I have tried all of the builds from 20170810 up to present and none of them will allow VLC to display video. I even tried the unofficial Oreo build on the device which seems to run well but VLC still doesn't work.
What am I missing? I am able to play youtube videos without a problem on any of these versions of the ROM.
Is anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions?
Thanks, I appreciate the help and support of this community.
Steve

Hi, yeah, vlc player and 321 Player are not reliable now.
I am using MX player, which I actually like now, and have no problems playing any formats.

Thanks for the suggestion. MX Player does work on build 20170810 although I do prefer VLC. Strange thing is that VLC works on the latest Lineage builds on my Galaxy S3 - different animal I know. I think something must have been left out of the build or changed in some way that VLC doesn't like. it. Would love to find out what the issue is.
Steve

Yeah, like I said, I don't mind MX now. I used to use it a long time ago but stopped when it became unreliable and switched to vlc, hmm, :cyclops:

[Q] Not able to play video on Mildwild v2.5

Is there anybody else who is not able to play video on new Mildwild v.2.5? I tried latest MX Video player, Vplayer, Mobo player, but no success. I also went back to Mildwild 2.1 and there is no problem to watch video with at least MX video player.
It looks like the only problem I have with this ROM so far.
Many thanks.
Checked the Rom thread for this problem?
Yes, I did, but didn´t find anything about video issue. Also to be sure that my Desire doesn´t have any hardware issue I flashed last available nightly CM 262 and with this ROM and MX player worked without problems. Fortunatelly I had backup of Mildwild 2.1, so I had to go back to this older version and MX video player works for me fine.

PLEX Media Player Playback Issue

Is anyone running the Plex Media Player successfully on the A100?
I am on the latest 1.12 ICS leak and when attempting to play a TV show from my library over my LAN I receive the following:
"We're sorry but there was a problem attempting to play 'TV Show name here'
There was a problem with media playback."
For a song I receive:
"We're sorry but there was a problem attempting to play 'song name here'
An error occurred (error 0x 17: UNKNOWN)"
I can connect to the server just fine and the content shows up as expected but playing the media results in the above errors.
I have tried all different combinations in the settings and think this may be an ICS issue. Unfortunately I never tried it on HC before I upgraded so I can't be sure if its the device or the android version.
I pretty sure it's not a codec issue because the content plays fine in PLEX on my other android devices and I believe the app itself installs the codecs.
Anyone have it working on either HC or ICS?
Thanks!
Well I guess nobody use this application?
As an update I have researched the issue further and through the PLEX forum's have determined that ICS Rom's in general ARE experiencing problems with this app. Some users are saying that if the device has received an "official" ICS (Ex. Galaxy Nexus, Moto Xoom, Etc.) that the application is working fine while users on "custom" ICS rom's are having difficulty.
The general belief is that the official ICS Rom's offer built in hardware acceleration and the custom rom's do not because they were not built from the official source.
This worries me because the ICS we are using is a leak of the official and I would assume hardware acceleration was already incorporated. Perhaps not and they will add it last minute prior to the official release but I'm doubtful.
Again, if anybody uses this app, posting your experience would be appreciated.
I have never even heard of this app before, try using more widely known/supported apps like MX video player, TTPod, and PowerAMP.

Thanks for the advice however PLEX is way more than just a "player". It is a complete media content system that is running throughout my house. It consists of two separate applications. One is a media manager and the other is the "player". Players can run on all different platforms and access the media being served up from the manager.
I currently run the players on a minimum of 6 different devices. Using a simple player like you have referenced (no matter how good they may be) is not an option for me.
I either need to downgrade to HC or wait (and hope) that the official ICS release will fix this issue. Or use another tablet.
For those interested see this LINK. Unfortunately the Android App is not free but the local media manager and players for Linux, MAC and windows are free.
Hi, did you manage to make things work with Plex?
I can not even log in the frakking server...lol
At first I thought Firewall was playing around after an update, but even diable was not able to log.
Any ideas? It is a really lovely app that one.
Do you know any other with similar results?
Tks brother!
It works fine on Cyanogen. Once I went to that ROM all issues disappeared.
Yes

Yes. I was having the same error as you and many other ICS users. There was an update to the server this week, and now it works. I am on stock 4.03.

[Q] terrible MKV playback?

So I've been searching for about a day now for a solution to this problem. I've been trying to play MKV files on my phone, but every single player i've tried (mobo, mx, rock, vlc nightly, bs, dice, and vplayer) have been really stuttery and the audio desyncs massively.
It seems that most people are able to play MKVs but for some reason I can not get it to play smoothly at all.
Has anyone come across this and know a solution?
(the file I'm trying to play is a 720p h264 mkv with aac audio. I would put up all the file information if I knew how, so I can if someone shows me)
I'm really sorry if there is an answer to this somewhere, but I tried a search here and only got a thread talking about how everyone can play MKVs smoothly
Are you running a stock Rom or one of the aokp or cm roms? With stock I haven't had an issue with any mkv even on my previous sgs and sgs2. Are all mkvs having problems or is it just the one ?
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
dude i can stream mkvs without problem
mx player by turning the software decoding on in settings
or vlc player beta
It seems like it only happens on 10bit MKVs. MX Player is the best with software decoding but there are still some dropped frames. I saw a video of someone playing 10bit perfectly fine and a thread saying the S3 can handle 10bit so I'm not exactly sure whats wrong.
I'm running TuchMi 5.0 so I might try to go back to full stock just to see if that helps.
I would try the VLC beta but US can't get it from the play store and the nightly crashes constantly for me.
EDIT: full wipe didn't help
make sure you got the 1.7 update, for me the audio would get out of sync on any anime but with H/W+ that is now solved and i got back DTS thanks to custom codecs.
Software is horrible for me it plays fine, but everything gets artifacts and colored blocks etc. At first i though it was the device that god it wasn't
I have 1.7. H/W+ works for you? it keeps telling me that I can't play the video with it. Can you give an example of and episode that works for you?
Actually I'm curious about this too. Just tried to stream Planet Earth from my PC and I had huge lag because if you are streaming on MKV it uses software decoding...
To be fair I might have to push up my VSEL values...but I really doubt that's the case. Another thing I'm going to try is PS3media server which TRANSCODES (meaning your computer does the coding) for all media files...so it is streaming everything converted for your phone. The annoying thing about it though is that it won't automatically start with my computer
A third alternative is to setup a vlc media player server.

[Q] Google Play Music inconsistency with FLAC

i've just switched from i9023 to i9250. the crappy sound was a great disappointment but i've found some patched kernel with sound improvements, so it's acceptable now. it's still far from a voodoo'd crespo, but it's OK now.
the only problem i cannot tackle with is the inconsistency of flac playback. some albums encoded in flac play fine but some others are not even recognised by the GPM. so as to track down the problem, i searched for two albums i encoded with the same flac lib with the same encoder setting, exactly. But not; one is playing fine but the other is being constantly refused. as both albums play perfect on crespo, i must have concluded that it's something very specific to maguro.
both phones have the same player (4.4.811H), auto-updated from play store. on crespo i have 4.1.2 stock, on maguro it's just upgraded to 4.2.1 stock ota.
any help would be greatly appreciated
thx !
There's a few commits laying around in aosp/master about FLAC.
Try cyanogenmod.
Sent from my i9250
the stock Google Play music player is a mess. So many lags in the UI, aniamtions are slow, the transitions are laggy and painful. The whole app is messy as **** and should be recoded from the ground and put on a new UI.

thx, but i don't think to install another rom just because of this issue. i've tried aosp in the meantime, but besides the flac problem i've got gallery desynched; one by one it crapped all the apps synched with it (camera, talk, g+, ...) so i wont change to have more problem than i have now
would you, please, direct/link me to those sparse comments. i've made several hours search, but i haven't found anything about to this issue.

i don't really mind how a music player looks like as i use it for listening to music. usually it's run in the background, so i don't really care about such issues. anyway, i tried several other players but the problem is persistent, so, again, it must be an inherent problem of maguro and not specific to GPM. again, exactly the same player plays fine the albums on crespo being not even recognised on maguro.

[Q] Video playback issues - kit kat 14.4.A.0108

Hi,
I am having serious issues playing videos on the device. The stock players (photos and movies apps) won't play anything I get through whatsapp (mostly sent from iOS devices), many vids from YouTube, nor the sample videos which were pre-loaded on the phone (?!?).
I downloaded MxPayer and VLC, which mostly solved the problem, but I'm still having problems with the YouTube app. In case it helps, here is an example of a video I can't watch (my one-year old's favorite): http://youtu.be/VMl0GbiVEyA.
The phone is brand new, arrived 4 days ago. I'm running the latest firmware (Kit Kat, build 14.4.A.0.108), which the phone prompted me to install. It is not rooted and I hope to keep it that way, at least for a while.
Any ideas? Is anybody else experiencing this?
Thanks!

I use vlc as only videoplayer (deleted all others), vlc plas all videos for me. The video you mentioned I can't see here in Germany due to copyright issues.
Thanks, but what about YouTube? How do you force the YouTube app to use VLC as the default player?

i use firefox as browser and use youtube from there. I don't use the the you tube app.
Ah, ok. Well, if anybody has a solution, that would be great. I really like using the app, would be a shame to have to use the browser.
I'd do full wipe of the Phone and start over by flashing a ftf. Z1 Compact Resource Thread -|-Rooting-BL Unlocking-Firmware & More...
Thanks, but as I said, not rooted, and trying ypto avoid going down the road of endless tweaking and customization.
I downloaded a few alternative YouTube players, and they all work fine. I'll choose one and see how it goes. Want to know if I can go " average Joe stock" user this time around.

You don't need to be rooted to flash your Phone, the flashtool would be pointless otherwise. Install the flashtool, flash a ftf, done, it's as simple as that.
