Refurb replacement problems and questions - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

My original Pixel XL died completely with a hard brick, no power, no lights, nothing. The refurbished replacement arrived yesterday. It booted up in 7.1.2 and had an update notice to Oreo 8. I did that and was on OPR6 with another update notice to the September security patch. Even with my T-Mobile SIM installed, it installed OPR1 for Project Fi and Canada instead of OPR3. Is that normal?
None of my Play Store apps downloaded and installed. Is that normal or is it because I couldn't sync with my dead phone? Unfortunately all of my recent backups had been to the local SD card, so that is a lesson learned for next time.
I unlocked the bootloader and fastboot flashed OPR3 with no problems, but now my Play Store says it's uncertified. I tried clearing the Play Store data and rebooting, plus several other tips I found online, but nothing fixed it. Is that because of the unlocked bootloader and not being rooted? Rather than doing a factory reset and starting over, if I root with SuperSU and run suhide, will the Play Store be certified again?

Anyone?

It changed back to certified for me. I'm rooted with SuperSU and suhide. I cleared Playstore data, I blocked Playstore, Pay, etc. app's in suhide, then I hid SuperSU and suhide icons, Safetynet passed, and rebooted.

Thanks! I rooted with SuperSU, installed suhide, blocked Play Store, cleared Play Store data and then rebooting fixed it. I have seen that others have had to hide the SuperSU and suhide icons but I didn't have to on either my old phone or this replacement.

Did you require TWRP to root or is there a way to directly flash SuperSU and suhide from fastboot?

I don't know if there's a way to root without TWRP. I used the bootable one for Oreo with:
fastboot boot twrp-3-1-pixel-bootable-mod.img

Could you kindly provide a link to the Oreo compatible TWRP? Also what SuperSu zip did you use?
Thanks so much!!

You really should be searching and reading for yourself before you try any of this, but here is the TWRP thread with download link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel/development/mod-twrp-recovery-pixel-android-o-dp4-t3651896
I always use the newest SuperSU and suhide, which at the moment are SR4-SuperSU-v2.82-SR4-20170918204844.zip and UPDATE-suhide-v1.08-20170815171034.zip. I'll let you Google those yourself.

Haven't you read the threads about all of this? The instructions say to boot in between so that's what I did.

I have, including the line where Chainfire notes that it may be beneficial to not boot between flashing of these packages depending on how TWRP behaves, which is why I asked you.

Magisk on Nexus 5x

Is anyone using magisk and have Android pay working with root on the 5x ? I've been looking for a thread and can't find how to do it.
Unlock bootloader
Flash stock image
Flash TWRP
Reboot
Download magisk Manager and zip
Reboot ?
Will root apps work now with Android pay?

Do I need to flash SU or just magisk
Got it working. Shows Superuser PHH's not the SU by chainfire. Some apps are not working as well with superuser vs SU, but at least everything seems to be working. Every now and then Magisk Manager bug and it shows loss of root. I'll try Android pay sometime today if I can
Could you make a quick guide on how you got magisk installed correctly?
I had some trouble when i tried it after updating to 7.1.2 yesterday and ended up flashing supersu instead. thx

If you have custom kernel, flash the stock one or that came with the Rom from recovery. Then flash Magisk 12 zip file from Magisk Thread and flash it via recovery. Then reboot and download Magisk manager ....
Is there any reason why Magisk wouldn't work with a custom jkernel? I've installed Magisk on top of pure nexus ROM with ElementalX kernel without issues before.
I'm running SAOSP with Magisk and Franco Kernel and I have root and Android Pay works. That's all I flashed. It had a hard time passing Safety Net when SuperSU was installed. So just flash Magisk without SuperSU. And I guess Android Pay can detect if you have an unlocked bootloader so Franco Kernel is used because it hides that.
I tried Android Pay twice. First time didn't go through, said on the vending machine failed. Second time worked. I checked Android Pay and see 2 charges, does the one that didn't go through just drop off eventually ? Also both charges are much higher than what the actual price was, but I assume this is just a temp charge.
I have elemental X kernel. Works fine. I decided not to mess with SU. My other apps work, plus I've tried asking Chainfire before questions about his apps he's made and he never responded. Not cool, I did buy his apps too, not just freebies.

All of my Android Pay charges initially show up as a $1.00 pending charge. After a while, they post as transactions for the full value of the purchase.

Enable Always On Display on Pixel XL Android Pie - Magisk

This is actually relatively simple, and has worked with every update on Oreo.
Use at your own risk, while it's unlikely something like this will brick your device, I take no responsibility if anything happens. Always know how to get yourself out of a bootloop. The APKs and Magisk module posted by others should be fine, however feel free to extract the APK yourself from the Pixel 2/3 factory images.
Download the APK here (or extract it from the Pixel 2/XL's P DP1 factory image), install TWRP and Magisk (I used v16). Use a file manager with root permissions, I used ES file manager. Copy Framework-res__auto_generated.apk from here to System/Vendor/Overlay/ and overwrite (you could also copy the original somewhere if you wanted a backup). SystemUI will crash or the phone will reboot. Due to this, apps will constantly be crashing, to fix this, open up the file manager again and set the permissions correctly.
(Incase anyone is curious why I don't have a navbar, I removed it with a buildprop edit, I'm a bit nervous about burn in, and that way I can avoid it. Also, AOD moves around slowly)
Based on what I've seen with the leaks from the Pixel 3, it may be this simple to get the AOD with a wallpaper when we get the file from the Pixel 3 XL. But then again, I'm not a developer, so maybe not. But I'm glad this is still working for now!
APKs are posted by various users here, once I get access to my PC I'll be sure to post them in chronological order every time a update is put out.

That's what I thought, it seems it's just a Magisk manager issue, root works but not in all apps. Worked fine with a file manager for me.

Did you install Magisk via TWRP? Only other thing I can think of, is going back to 8.1, rooting and giving the file manager root permissions, then flashing P (as a update, without wiping data) then flashing Magisk again. Then opening the file manager, it will already be able to use root permissions. It seems like it's just the Magisk app that is broken, not root itself.

It's just a disclaimer they have, I have been using AOD since early December with no battery issues.
Tried this on Android O March 2018, extracted the file from Pixel 2 XL factory images, but I'm not getting the option in setting.
Do I have to do anything else other than copy file and set permissions?
Edit: Read your other thread, and did it through TWRP file manager as I don't have root. I guess it only works using a file manager with root while booted.

Yeah I'm up and running. I moved the file, rebooted, got into ES file (after a few tries) and was able to fix the permissions. I'm on Dev preview with magisk and a few modules + this mod now.

As long as you have a unlocked bootloader (which you should if you are on the first P preview, even though it is insanely stable) it won't wipe your device. Magisk was actually updated to work with P.

Magisk and Magisk Modules

I have Magisk installed and decided to try out some of the modules for it but could never get them to update it said on all that they would update on next reboot, well after several reboots nothing. I clicked on the little garbage can to delete and they wouldn't delete?? I ended up having to uninstall magisk to get rid of them and had to reinstall magisk to get root back.. Any one else have any problems with the modules??

I had a similar problem. It took multiple reinstalls of magisk to get it working, hang in there you'll get it working. That's just one of the issues with how this phone handles many different things. T-Mobile has had to issue updates to fix updates and that has potential to turn people away from an otherwise great piece of hardware. Hang in there you'll figure this phone out.

Still able to use Google Play store and certify device after root + custom rom?

Hi,
Not too long ago a weird bug forced me to do a wipe of the device before i can start using it again (was all stock). Now i'm debating on a custom rom since the biggest obstacle for me (wiping the device and reinstalling everything again after) has been taken away.
I did however remember reading about devices with root and custom rom not being able to use the play store anymore since Google marked them as unregistered and such.
Is this still a problem? or is there a work around / fix for this to be found?
Thanks in advance.

Its not a problem if you flash custom rom + gapps + magisk altogether. Once all those files are flashed successfully then only reboot to system & your Google play store will say your device is certified.

Alright so i have managed to install lineage and gapps, but somehow i cant get magisk to work.
1) can i just leave it like this without magisk and not have problems with google uncertified stuff?
2) if the above can't be done or if i can still somehow install magisk, please explain how. (i rooted one other time long ago with superSU, i dont have experience with magisk). I followed: https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-install-magisk/ but i get an error 1 when trying to install in TWRP.

To make magisk working properly just make sure you have /data partition EXT4 formatted also install this version of TWRP for Lenovo p2 https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=5862345805528044694 after that install latest version of magisk through recovery & you will be able to install magisk successfully.

Correct. Even with Magisk root Google Pay and other secure banking apps work fine. You may just need to activate Magisk hide for certain apps.

Thank you for your reply.
Yes i did format the data partition to ext4. I used the TWRP version of their original website, searched for the lenovo p2a42 and found kuntao_row. (twrp-3.2.3-0-kuntao_row.img to be exact). Is there a difference in the version you linked there and this one ?
I currently have lineageos with gapps installed and working. If i am going to try and make magisk work. Are the following steps correct?:
1) install magisk manager
2) shut down and enter fastboost
3) flash different TWRP version
4) Boot into TWRP recovery
5) install magisk from ext sd
6) Then done? Or do i need to reinstall LineageOS and gapps again after those steps? And maybe wipe and reformat again at some points? if so, where?
Again thanks in advance and i really appreciate the help.

Just download latest version of the magisk, keep it somewhere in the storage then reboot to recovery, update your current recovery by the recovery I have given you above, reboot again to recovery then flash magisk & reboot to system. After successful flashing of magisk zip install magisk manager apk from play store or Google.

Hi,
Back again haha. It still works properly and almost have everything set up as i wanted to. One more question arose:
The system is telling me there is a new version update for lineageos.
I am assuming i just click download on the latest version, then reboot into recovery (backup as optional), click install, search the zip and let it install then reboot again is the way to install it. But do i have to reinstall gapps? and does this process delete any data or is it just like a normal update and everything stays the way it was before installing the update?
Thanks again in advance.

To make Netflix show up on Play Store, you not only have to pass SafetyNet but also pass Google Play certification. To do that you can simply hide Magisk from Google Play Store app.
I have Xiaomi.eu custom ROM with Magisk and hid a bunch of things, SafetyNet passes and Netflix is visible on the Play Store.

To make Netflix work also try clearing Playstore cache and if Netflix is already installed and it says device incompatible clear it's cache and storage. I had this issue, clearing data fixed everything.
Same here. It worked only after clearing cache of the Google Play Store on official MIUI with Magisk.
