My OP3 started to have a problem like ~2 months ago with a very very low incall volume. For a while, the fix low incall volume zips found here on xda boosted the volume a bit, but the sound was still low and poor quality. After a talk with OP for warranty, which was gone, couldn't send it to them for a repair, so I ordered a replacement speaker earpiece. After I replaced it, I get same problem even on stock OOS or custom ROM. Anyone else encountered this problem, or anyone has another "workout" for this particular problem? Any advice will be highly appreciated!

I have problems with both
1) too low volume
2) the people I call hearing a loud echo of their own voice.
I actually think it a hardware design error. The ear piece speaker and the noise cancelling microphone are not enough isolated from each other. The sound from the speaker go into the microphone and the problem arises.
My guess is that Oneplus lowered the ear piece max volume to avoid the worst echo problem.
If you want high volume again this zip (OOS version) actually work for me (on SultanXDAs Lineage rom):

Hi buddy sorry if you've already tried this option but if I was you I'd back up everything you need and download stock ROM then wipe system , data , internal storage , cache and dalvik cache and then transfer the ROM you got to your phone and install , the reason I recommend wiping your whole device and starting from scratch is because you could of messed up your mixer_paths and other similar files by using sound mods etc viper4android or others , if you try it will you please let me know the outcome by quoting my post , thanks.

Did that like 4 times now. The mixer_path is same as original one... I will try again when I get back from vacation because the problem got back after I assembled entirely the phone (tested it without the back case and the sound was louder, strange). Hopefully I will figure it out somehow...

Hi. try flashing back the stock rom. If still same prob, then and take it back frm where you bought it. They should fix under waranty, or exch it. it may be faulty
btw did the issue started happening after u flashed a custom rom?
I had the same problem...
...searched all over trying to find a solution relating to Desire HD but eventually found my answer in a thread relating to an older HTC phone.
I doubt I'd find it again so I can't give the credit where it's deserved but the poster suggested a couple of possible causes and solutions as I recall;
1. The speaker in the earpiece naturally contains a magnet and could over time pick up bits of metal fragments (swarf) from dust, in your pocket, off tables, etc. He suggested using a stronger magnet to stroke it off perhaps, or even easier (and perhaps safer for other components) just blow!
2. The speaker will have a thin plastic diaphragm that resonates to form the sound. If this becomes malformed somehow it will produce crackling/tinny noise and poor volume. The solution here is to close your mouth over the earpiece and either blow or suck If one doesn't work then try the other and test again.
Sounds comical I know(!), but it worked for me. I can't remember if it was blowing or sucking in my case but I was very glad I had avoided having to go through customer services and being without my phone. Instant fix and it's been fine since.
Like I said, this isn't Desire HD specific advice - it could happen to any cellphone really. I hope you have the same joy as I did ;-)
Funny but it works!
I was just going to unroot and return my Desire Z Vision to stock, and try to get it fixed under warranty. What a hassle!
I'm not sure whether the blowing or the sucking was it, but it fixed the terrible sound distortion coming from the phone earpiece speaker at higher than minimum in-call volumes.
Thanks so much! I love the XDA community!

To me I have tried blow trick but it messed up the ear piece more. But there is no way you going to loose the sound unless you drop the phone , try the magnet trick or using a vacuum cleaner ( I was once thinking of doing that ) try to re flash your DHD may be it will help and try to go with stock Rom first with mod kernel .

Hi, I am on a t-mobile branded stock DHD which has never been rooted and the in call volume is amazingly low, I can barely hear people when I'm outside and most of the time I have to put it on speaker, I never had this problem with my n95 or bb 9780, can anyone help or offer any suggestions, is there a chance my handset could be faulty. Also does call quality improve in gingerbread as I am still awaiting that update.

HTC Desire HD weird sound from earpiece
Hey guys
I am experiencing something really weird. On my desire HD, when I start a call (make/receive) the sound is at max and is fine, after sometime the calls sound is all distorted as if the speaker is burst, once I lower the sound its fine i.e. <50%. If i keep my phone upside down for some time, the sound gets normal on the earpiece but again after sometime it gets distorted again.
What is going on? My speaker (earpiece) sounds okay for a few mins and then gets distorted, and after sometime it gets back to normal and then again distorted.. help me out guys i cant figure out and cant fix it.
I have tried:
1) Magnet in front of earpiece to pull out fragments of small metals on the speaker
2) Left the phone in an air tight jar with a dessicant on the earpiece
What next?

Maybe yes, but its like alright for a few mins, e.g. in a 10 min call, 6 min its fine, then its like something is gradually appearing on the speaker to make it sound bad, slowly and gradually the sound gets from OK to bad as if something is vibrating with the speaker.
What I dont understand is that how does it get okay after a few mins rest?
I live in Pakistan, no Official HTC Support here, everything is either smuggled or people order from abroad... If it fails its a pretty tough situation for me !
Last resort is to blow in the earpiece or to use the professional air spray blower, but none of these trials is curable, this info is from HTC support website, mine requires repair, or I can use it for gaming and chatting, in that way an itoutch is quite enough.
Actually it was a great "phone" but now it's just an itouch or game&watch, or may be elastic baloon according to the technician solution.
Thanks htc ... No more purchases

have you per-chance installed a cover or protector over the speaker holes?
I've had this issue a while ago, and I found out that it was because dust had gone through the ear piece and settled.
Try to clean you ear piece with a soft (and clean off course) toothbrush, I was astonished by the amount of dust that crept in.

and i found the problem the holes on the incall volume's speakers are filled with dirt and its blocking the volume i opened holes and at last i solved the my problem
if u have any question about that solutian please e-mailet to me eczahmetcetiner @ hotmail. com i will ansver for everybody
Screen replacement
If you had sent your screen for replacement and are suffering from low volume.. This could be the reason
The dudes over at the service place didn't remove all the protective plastic that come with a new screen... There was this small plastic piece protecting the earpiece from behind the holes.. it was sitting between the holes and on the earpiece speaker. Removed it and what a difference..
Is somebody experiencing issues with the external speaker? Everything was normal until suddenly the speaker started to sound like is broken. I am using viper audio and I am not sure if this is making the problem. But, somebody can tell me what can I do?

hi all, experiencing same problem with my zenfone 2, sent the device to a local repair shop but they said that problem with the chip on the board.
They changed 2 speakers and same problem, what you guys think ?
The thing is that I could still hear some sound at very high frequency but things such as music or youtube no.
I have been using the moto z play for around 6 months and recently I have been observing that the speaker on the z play distorts and crackles at near full volume. It cannot play any high pitched sound without distortion. I used be pretty clear earlier. I am planning to visit the service center. What do you guys suggest? Anyone else face the same issue here ?

I would suggest taking it in and have it looked at. The prior suggestion would be proper if you had complained about a low volume and was looking to boost your volume. But I have not heard complaints about distorting and crackling at full volume. The other suggestion at this point would make things worse. I keep all of my volumes set to max and have none of the issues you mention. Good Luck.

Like many, my phone has the lower speaker distortion on speaker phone calls and general audio, like YouTube, when turned up high. If you are rooted, I have found a solution to all situations except speaker phone calls.
I installed Viper4android through Magisk, kept all default settings except under the Speaker phone section. I checked the Master Power and FIRequalizer boxes, chose Rock setting under FIRequalizer, and modified it to lower all of the levels from 250 to 4k to -6.8 db.
This removed the frequencies that caused terrible sound from the lower speaker, including when Google assistant speaks.
Does anyone have a solution for when on a speaker call though, as this has no effect there?

Tbh, I'm pretty sure everyone has it to a degree. Either your volume isn't cranked to 100% max, or it's not as prevalent but I do think it affects all devices. There are several lengthy threads with heaps of people confirming this. I just rooted my phone so I'm going to give OP's fix a shot.

I had insane distortion on my previous phone. Any volume above zero and the speaker would buzz around like crazy. If I run my replacement at max stock volume (No audio mods installed), I get clear sound with no distortion. So either I'm lucky or the issue isn't as prevalent as you think

Well, the thing is that it's not noticeable in ever scenario. You need to play audio which has someone speaking in it. A good one would be any linus tech tips video where he's @ CES. Playing music and a lot of other types of audio doesn't bring it out.

I initially tested my speakers at full volume using audiocheck and a bunch of well recorded tracks. I just tested with a couple of Linus videos from CES and the results were the same. There is no perceptible distortion/buzz when compared against my laptop speakers and headphones. If there is any distortion, the only way I would be able to know would be to set up a measuring rig and check what the THD is on these speakers. and compare it to any specs that Google has put out if they did reveal that information in the first place.
It is true that a lot of devices have terrible speakers and there are loads of people who have complaints about them. That doesn't mean every phone is defective. 6 defective phones in a row means you either have really bad luck, all your replacements were from the same production batch that was terrible, or Google QC is really ****ty.
