My wife has a Moto Z2 Play and since she got it she has had trouble with recording video. Several times it has worked, but mostly it stops recording after less than a second (sometimes it saves a 0:00 second video, most times it doesn't save anything). I've tried resetting the app, changing video quality, and changing if it saves to phone or SD card. Oddly enough, I had the same problem on my Pixel when it was brand new and the only resolution I found was to uninstall doubleTwist and their alarm clock app (which my wife doesn't have installed). Any ideas other than reformatting the SD card and a fresh install?
Have you tried booting into safe mode and seeing if it works that way?

Hi, I tried to search but couldn't find anything about this problem.
The other day I was trying to record video at a kid's birthday party, and the video was somewhat long, around 6-7 minutes. Without any warning, the video stopped recording and went straight to the home screen. I tried to play the video file, but it shows up as a gray box on the phone and doesn't play on either my phone or my computer. I tried various video players.
This happened to me again, I went up to wine country and was taking a video from my car mount of the scenery as I drove down the windy roads. I stopped one video at around 5-6 minutes, the second one I didn't stop it that soon and the phone went to home screen again. Video was unplayable, same as last time.
I tried to replicate the issue recording videos, tried to push the home screen or any other buttons to replicate the issue - all times the video saved if you stopped the recording one way or another. I even tried to send myself an email to see if notifications could stop the video, didn't do anything. I recorded till around 7 minutes, and the phone went to home screen around 6:52. Same result as before.
All the files that were unplayable weren't unusually large, around 300-355 megs I believe. I'm running the stock 8gb card, and I'm rooted with baked snack 9.6. Free space on card was around 3-4 gigs each time, free space on phone roughly 80 mb. I'm using mpeg-4, all other videos I record are fine.
So is there anyways to fix this problem? It's kind of hard to always stop the phone at the right time to avoid this, and I'm wondering what's causing it in the first place. Could it be that the phone's ram is reaching capacity?
I just noticed that when try recording 720p video on my SRF 1.1.0 Epic, it FCs at around 10 seconds. I seem to recall reading on here it could be an SD card issue, but before I go and reformat my card, I wanted to know if anyone had found an alternative solution to fix the problem.
Rarely use the video camera, so it's not the end of the world having this issue, but it'd still be nice to get it fixed for when I do need it.
Also, it seems to work on lower resolutions, just not 720p.
Almost like my SD card can't keep up with the data rate of 720p video.
EDIT: just occurred to me I didn't mean FC, it just says recording failed.
A friends DHD is just displaying a black screen when trying to watch recently recorded video from the phone. Anyone else had this before?
I had the same problem, after a bit googling it turned out to be caused by the memory card being not up to the task. To record HD video the card has to be class 6 or above but the card supplied by htc is only class 2 so it can't read/write fast enough.
So would ensuring the videos are local and not on the card help?
Normally it isn't related to the sdcard. Have you tried to play your video on a PC?
Sent out of my Free Candy Van.
I bellieve too that isn't the sd card. I have a 16gb class 4 but i don't have problems with HD Videos, i shoot and watch everything just fine.
I bellieve that maybe it's a bug or even worst a hardware proble. I have a similar problem with media, i get random errors and denies to play videos or music transfered from my pc.
is it not working both landscape and portrait?
Afaik it happens regardless,im going to see her tomorrow and take a look at the phone, may take a backup and factory reset.
I just can't imagine what's causing it.
If you can get a memory card (ideally class 6 or above but you could try class 4) try it. I contacted HTC and they thought it was a software fault but I tried a new card (class 10) and I've had no problems in the 6 months since then. I was even getting problems playing high quality on YouTube it was getting so bad.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
Well I checked the uptime of her phone since she said it was really slow and struggling it was a whopping 979 hours!!
switched off and tested her card in my phone. shocked to find mine was class 4 btw.
anyway her vids played back perfect on my GS2. recorded ok too.
videos recorded to my card on her DHD too.
next put her card back in the DHD and begun recording then played it back fine.
started to play back her older vids now perfectly.
Seemed to be down to the fact it was struggling being on non stop for so many hours and maybe taking out the card and popping back in helped.
backed up all her vids and pics onto a mem stick just in case. There I was thinking Id be factory resetting her phone and starting over!
After the August Update, recording videos at 4k60 uses the internal storage instead of my SD card. My SD card is a Samsung EVO plus U3, so it can't be speed problems. This was working fine before the update. Any way to resolve this?

Any solution found? Very annoying...this was the only reason that I bought a 256gb sd!!! It was working just fine....I don't understand!!!
+1 same here, worked fine for months, suddenly a deal breaking change like this, sucks big time. Why not implement a choice, I don't get this.
I finally discovered this painful truth last night. WTH samsung.
I found that out also at 1 this morning while recording water pouring through our basement window. I also found out that if you turn your phone sideways to record video in 4K 60 FPS that when you try to watch the video, it will be sideways when you turn the phone sideways to watch it unless me moving the video to my SD card caused it. . That is seriously messed up.
after using this phone for 3 months, here are the problems I have found.
After every reboot, sorting of images in my gallery change. Most recent pictures and on top. they just get mixed and match. I use a SanDisk SD card. nothing is in order, I mean nothing. This is the thing I hate the most.
Gallery app updates itself pretty slowly, after taking a photo, it takes about 4 minutes to find that pic. in twitter app.

GPS is not a mess, it is mostly a punishment by a higher being. cursor flips other sides, it requires calibration all the time, when I turn right, it turns to left or doesn't even move. Sometimes it works, sometimes it works backward. This GPS losing me time every single day. Shame on you Xiaomi

it takes I'm not kidding, 10 minutes for my phone to load 200GB SanDisk card with 60gb data in it.
To boot the phone back from a reboot, I need to take the sim tray off, otherwise, the home-screen doesn't show up, I just see my wallpaper for 5 minutes. Even though the app I'm going to lunch is stored internally (let's say twitter) I cannot launch it before the sd card loads completely.

video recording option on the main camera app makes the phone freeze and brick. Yeah, just wanting to record a video bricked my one once. it was awesome. Had to format everything and start over.

Backspace key lags, sometimes doesn't recognize when typing fast. Not sure why, it is very odd.
Rooted with magist, TWRP using the stock ROM.
