Hello
I have had a massive battery drain problem on my Note 2, a couple of days after the 4.3 update. While being idle during the night it loses 25% to 30% of its battery and while using it I can literally see the percentage drop. I have tried everything that I could find on the net. EVERYTHING! Nothing worked. These included: Factory reset (twice), letting the battery frain completely and then recharging it while the phone was switched off, switching off all sync, disabling bloatware including KNOX components (the actual KNOX app is not installed), installing only a few apps after factory reset, using Gsam, Wakelock detector, Deep sleep battery saver (which could not make my phone sleep), no GPS, no 3G, wifi on only when needed and more besides.
The phone is only one year old and unrooted. On 4.1.2 it had a beastly battery performance of almost 1.5 days of normal to heavy use, with 300 apps on it. Now it cannot go for more than a few hours with the same use.
I cannot say for sure but it seems to me that the drain is the same when it is sleeping and when I am using it. Wakelock has given me a 75% awake time even though I only use it for 15-20% of the day at most nowadays. Battery settings show everything normal, or at least I think so, eg Screen 35%, Android OS 15-28%, Voice calls 10%, Android system 5-15%, Cell standby 7%, Device idle 4%, Media server 4%. The batttery chart shows a constant steep drop all the time.
The problem started one day when the Media server went mad consuming 50% of the battery. After I did the factory reset it has never again been a problem but the drain still persists.
I have also read that it's a mess up between syncing of Samsung apps and Google services, but I have no way of verifying that.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
I had the very same problem until yesterday myself but think I found a solution on the web.. Uninstall Google Search and Google Play Services and the goto the Play Store and wait for them to reinstall and that's it....! As I found that there is a bug in Google Services (Nlpwakelock and Location service)
Hope this helps...?

Download wakelock detector from the play store. It detect which app is waking your device (both screen and cpu) by list.. Then download greenify from the play store and herbinate (greenify) upper most apps from wakelock detector. Hope you can solve your problem

Thanks. I already have Wakelock Detector on. I mistakenly wrote "defender" instead of detector on the original post. It gives me Viber and Messenger as the most active wakelock apps. But they both were not installed when the problem started. Besides, on the 4.1.2 they created no problems. In essence I believe that Wakelock Detector cannot help much. Whatever this problem is , it is well hidden. Thanks for your interest and help anyway. Much appreciated.

Which kernel you are using? And also i recommend using Greenify. Widgets usually eat a lot of battery, I went from battery lasting only 8 hours to get my battery use only 30% in 8 hours.
What i did: installed wakelock detector, gsam battery monitor and better battery stats.
Monitorized the wakelocks.
Applied greenify to the apps which were waking most
Removed widgets which were waking alot
Installed Toggle 2G.
Kernel settings: 200-1600mhz | zzmoove | AFTR+LPA | Multicore power saving (SCHED_MC) = 0 | GPU = stock settings
Works like a charm for me. Hope it helps! Any question, ask!
I've read all sorts of things about this problem since I updated and got hit. I have too much app data to lose by trying the factory restore (which by all accounts shouldn't change anything anyway since you'd still be stuck with 4.3)
I finally decided to try the age old blackberry cure-all: "if in doubt, pull it out" (the battery). Since the entire issue seemed to be related to battery caused problems (ie slow charging, fast drain, etc) it made a lot of sense.
And it worked.
I think the main reason this isn't more commonly tried to fix issues on Android is the same reason I didn't try it earlier. My case is pretty serious and isn't easy to remove. I'm glad I did take the time to take the case off though or I could have ended up wiping my phone.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have already taken the battery on and off several times. It had no improvement. The phone is only a year old, that is why I don't believe the battery is the culprit. Besides, problems started only after the 4.3 update. Before that it was working perfect. Too much of a coincidence.
Sorry to hear that it didn't work for you
I'm not saying the battery is faulty in any way - however removing the battery and letting the phone power drain completely seems to stop whatever process is running under the buggy 4.3 long enough for it to work again as intended. It's basically just a more thorough way to reboot.
As I said, I've read all sorts of suggestions, many of which don't work for everyone (such as the factory reset) - this is hopefully just one more thing for people to try before they end up wiping their phone in desperation. I mainly posted here in the hopes that others with this issue that may not be forum members can get some more suggestions.
At least for me, wakelock and all the other diagnostic tools at my disposal showed nothing different to before the update. Many other people have found that the Android System is using a lot more of their battery than normal or some other apps are involved - if this is the case, it's likely to be a combination of things causing the issue (the firmware, the drivers, apps, hidden Samsung processes, etc).
Also, for what it's worth, I found that Knox supposedly wasn't installed (when I find it in the apps list, the button to install it is showing...). But it's showing in the list of apps so it must already be installed. I dug through the list of running processes (had to show the system processes too) and I discovered that several Knox and some other new Samsung processes were indeed running.
One other quick tip - If you wanted to check/tweak the 'developer options' and can't seem to find it any more, that's because it's now hidden since 4.2 - go to 'About Device' and tap 7 times on the Build Number. I tried disabling all background processes however it seems this only disables application level processes, not system level processes but if you've tried everything else, it can't hurt to try playing around with some of the options in there.

Thanks mate
I think you are right. It is probably a combination of many things. I have opened the Developer options some time back. The one thing that I do for sure in there is limit background processes to 4. Besides that I don't experiment much, exept maybe to change transition animation scale. I am actually thinking of rooting the phone and downgrading to 4.1.2. It was just fine before. I can live without the 4.3 add ons.

I faced same battery drainage issue, after installing wanam kernel and freezing all bloatwares through Titanium Backup. I'm satisfied with my battery now.
You can try.

Here is detail-
Disable sync always, enable when needed.
Disable wifi always scan from settings
Display set to auto
Uninstall apps of playstore you rarely use
Use widgets on lock and homescreen as less as you can (I don't use any)
Disable motion on settings
Freeze all bloatwares by TB except allshare and samsung content agent
Install Agni kernel, from agni control app-
profile: normal
Governor: pegasusq
Scheduler: cfq
Don't touch other tweaks, hardly you can tweak sound boost.
THIS GIVES ME A SATISFIED BATTERY STATUS.
regards.

Wew 4.3 does have may bugs
Hello! I've been lurking around trying to solve my battery drain issue for two days without success. I have a d2att with severe battery drain, where battery would last for around 2 hrs MAX before shutting down at 40%. This was apparently an issue before (my brother was using it) when it was on stock unrooted 4.3. I installed Carbon 4.4.4 to look for improvements.
Symptoms:
Rapid battery decrease during use
Shutoff at 40% (when rebooting it would show 0%, when charging it will start at 40%)
Constant wake (I believe from the systemupdate wakelock that is unstoppable)
Feels warm during short times of use, cool when standby
Attempts to fix:
Using GSAM to monitor battery drain (just installed Betterbatterystats, will update with that info later)
Installed MyAndroid Tools and Disable service to stop systemupdate and checkin services
Autoruns to stop all systemupdateservice receivers
Dalvik cache wipe to try to fix the 40% shutoff
Privacy guard to turn off keep awake for Google play services and Android system
Privacy guard to turn off location for GNow
Have not done:
Replace battery (just ordered one that's coming in two days)
Clearing batt stats, as apparently that doesn't help
Factory reset, as it's a pain to setup again (Should this be next?)
Greenify
Xposed
I am just generally confused at this point at whether systemupdate service is turned on or off, or how to solve that, or if that is even the main problem, and what my next steps should be. I'm not an expert and can only understand half of what's going on, so any advice is greatly appreciated!
*Update: It seems that the phone is able to go to deep sleep (~50% of the time). When I use it just 5 minutes for texting, the battery can drop 5%. After reading from another thread, I re-enabled systemupdate services from Disable Services/My Android tools to see if that would solve the problem, and it looks like it is not hogging wakelock anymore; however it does revert on boot, similar to this: forum.cyanogenmod(.)org/topic/96459-systemupdateservice-wakelock-on-cm11-m7-massive-battery-drain/
Update 2: I flashed Liquidsmooth 3.1 stable instead. This time I used autoruns manager and wakelock blocker (included in liquidsmooth settings) to disable the services, but systemupdate service still manages to run, so I have to disable the block to somehow make it stop with every boot. Once that is fixed, deep sleep functions normally, but now the new problem is that Chrome browser app seems to be stuck in an AudioMix wakelock. I uninstalled Chrome updates and this seems to have fixed that issue, however battery drain is still severe (5%/2min) during active phone use. No application stands out in constant wakelock anymore, so I'm suspecting it may be the battery itself? I will switch to a new battery tomorrow to verify.
Update 3: Well since no one bothered to help, I will just post this for future reference as a log, since I solved the last part by the battery switch to an Anker battery. The phone still gets hot, and I still have to manually deactivate systemupdate service on every reboot, but now it runs for "normal" times 5-6hrs (heavy use).
To be honest, it sounds like you had a failing battery. It happens.

theres an xposed app called amplify that helps to block some wakelocks , startups and alarms. it might help.
"all i can really do , is stay out of my own way and let the will of heaven be done"
The date I noticed my battery issues coincides with when the update went live. I've tried tinkering as much as I can to disable wake lock permissions in all sorts of apps and using wake lock detector, but I can't really find the culprit.
I'm rooted, on 4.6.3. Is there a way to turn off the OTA check, or fool it into thinking I have 4.6.3.
Is it something else? I have a lot of apps, but the only thing wake lock can tell me about the sheer number of wakes is google play services, which has had it's permission to wake disabled but still is somehow the cause. That and system are about equal. Awake time is 91% since my last full charge and unplug. Not good.
Thanks for any help.
Just to maybe assist you in finding the culprit I'm on 4.6.3 with google apps but no root. I've not experienced any wake locks. Perhaps clearing Google's cache and data?
Sorry I meant I was on 4.6.1 still. Will clear data and see.

Probably one of those glitches that can be solved by a reboot. However, you can disable updates using hdxposed module for xposed if you want.
Done both of those things plus much more. Anyone else having this issue?
try taking a titanium backup of everything and then factory reset.. with everything backed up to your PC. then root and start restoring everything gradually.. start by social apps and call log and messages.. then your essential apps.. and see.. then add the rest of the apps bit by bit till you find the offending application or maybe something just got screwed will be fixed when the data clears..
just make sure there is nothing out of the norm in your essential apps, meaning they are all tried and tested by everyone.. facebook, whatsapp, keep, launcher.. that stuff. and also make sure in these apps to limit their ability to check every X minutes as they can really drain your battery.
I've disabled wakelock on anything that has reported to use it by wake lock detector that I don't absolutely need to have it. I've uninstalled any non-essential apps. I've done too much tinkering and have too much important app data to risk doing a reset when it may not work.
I need a way to actually get to the bottom of it first.
Why is google play services waking the phone 2000+ times per day? Wake lock detector says the phone has been awake 5 hours out of 10, but then the list of times for each app only adds up to 20 minutes. How do I find out what was keeping it awake the rest of the time?
Possibly some kind of location based frippery. Try removing location access from troublesome app. And turn off auto sync if it's on
Location services are completely disabled. Auto sync is off. Both have been since this started happening.
Used app quarantine to disable almost every app I put on here, and Fire OS is still 51%.
Possible culprits, though I'm not sure if I find it likely: Ultimate dynamic navbar, lightning chat, foscam viewer, google apps, xposed mods (have a few). greenify (that would be ironic), flixter, es file explorer, buildprop editor, calculator, jellybean keyboard, multi timer, skana battery alerts, nova launcher, power toggles, slacker radio, bank app, super user, terminal emulator, outlook, wakelock detector.
Get better battery stats from xda, it gives a better breakdown of wake locks.
Alright what should I look for in there?
Ok here is what I believe I have found out, using network log along with better battery stats.
The phone is waking up constantly due to netbios pings (I know not technically pings), from various computers on my network, mostly my main PC. I don't know why it's doing this. Could be one of many background processes. In my opinion, it shouldn't matter. The phone shouldn't be that stupid.
I was able to... I think, mitigate a lot of this by doing a few things.
The first is editing qcom's ini inside etc/wifi so that if it says offload, I put a 0, I assume it's offloading to the cpu, which causes it to wake for pointless crap. The second thing I did was re-enable optimized wifi. This is probably already on, on everyone else's phone. I turned it off because I was trying to figure out how to tether while connected to a vpn through the phone. Still can't get that to work. And I know how to, because I did it on my nexus prime, but something in the fire OS is f'ing that method up (iptable configs).
I'm considering seeking an app to turn off wifi when the phone sleeps, because better battery shows wifi on 100%, and even with the changes above, I was still responding to some netbios pings in the network (about 1/5th as many). I imagine most networks will have noise like this.
However, even after all this, fire OS is still the main battery draw. Better Battery doesn't account for all the wake time, not even by half.
For now I've put enough time into this.
My battery will completely drain after <10 hours while the screen is off!
However I was able to find out thatquickgooglesearchbar is always the top app.
Those screenshots are a bit old but it's still the same thing, I did manage to root it today, and I was testing Greenify which did nothing even with the Xposed modules, service disabler apps just did not show that specific service for some reason. I was able to remove the widget with Xposed GEL settings but it was still running even though the widget wasn't there.
So can someone please help me out here, maybe the search bar isn't the problem but I just want some battery life.

search and install betterbatterystats (read the whole first post) and it will tell you if its wakelocks etc.
Service disabler apps will need a setting to show system apps (or something similar) ticked or switched to etc.
greenify system apps in greenify also needs to be selected. You may also need to cut wake up paths to get it to stay greenified.
You could alternatively delete the apk of hibernate it (byfar the easiest option of all this).

I don't need betterbatterystats, I have battery Battery Historian, check the screenshots, It's clearly the search bar, on my other phone It isn't shown as a top app.
Also I went in the system folder /apps and there was no googlesearchbar, or in any other system apk remover tool, perhaps it was removed by another app, but it's still for some reason running.

Your 3rd image shows googlequicksearchbox had 370ms (milliseconds) of wakelocks over a 9hr period. I really doubt that is your issue.
If it is your top app, then it is probably because of Google Now launcher listening for OK Google spoken keyword.
I seriously doubt that is your battery drain problem as almost 90% of people probably have OK Google turned on and are using Google Now launcher and only a very few have serious battery drain.
BTW wakelocks aren't the issue usually. In the past it has been "partial wakelocks" which means an app locked the device from sleeping, but never released the lock, so the device never goes to full sleep. If you see some app with partial wakelocks or if you see some app with hours of regular wakelocks then that might be an issue. Minutes or microseconds of wakelocks are inconsequential.
I suggest you flash factory image and install your battery tester only. Turn off wifi, bluetooth, nfc, cell radio. Test the drain overnight. That is a baseline for the minimum drain your device can have. Then enable what wireless stuff you normally have turned on. See what that drain is. Then start installing apps and see what that drain is.
If you have reasonable/expected battery drain with stock and everything turned off, then it is just a process of elimination to see what is causing your battery drain.
If you can't get reasonable/expected battery drain with stock and everything turned off, then you probably have a bad battery.
For the record, my overnight battery drain with everything turned off is 0-1% With wifi turned on about 1-2%. With wifi+cell about 2-3%.
IMO the biggest drains for standby are wifi and/or cell signal related. Either bad signals or apps sending data in background or apps that are polling all the time.

IMO the biggest drains for standby are wifi and/or cell signal related. Either bad signals or apps sending data in background or apps that are polling all the time.

Factory reset didn't do anything a few days ago, the results were exactly the same that was when my phone wasn't rooted, so I guess I should return the phone, and get a new one?

What is your battery drain per hour with nothing installed and all wireless turned off and everything stock?
I'd only return it if that is significantly more than 0-.2% or 1% every 5 hours.
Otherwise it is something you have installed or something to do with the signal and how it interacts with your phone.
Once you start installing stuff or turning on wireless (wifi/bt/cell) then it is no longer purely about the battery and there are more factors that need to be isolated independently.
You really need to establish a baseline to see what the minimum battery drain is. Then you can determine if the battery is the problem or something else.
If you just install everything and turn everything on, there are too many moving parts.

Okay, I now have android N, and my battery life seems to be better, I will leave mobile data off. I will see tomorrow if my battery life has changed.
Do you think I should use Adaptive brightness for more battery life?

Which battery life was the one you think you have a problem with, standby or in use? IMO for in use battery time this phone is about average. Your title of "wakelock" made it seem like you were concerned about standby battery time as it doesn't matter if there is a wakelock if the device is already turned on and in active use.
When turned on, the screen is probably the number one thing eating power, so adaptive brightness could help, but if you are in a bright area, it might be worse than if you fixed the brightness below max.
Even if you have adaptive brightness turned on, the slider scale still is useful as you give the adaptive brigthness mechanism some idea what level of brightness you feel comfortable when the mechanism detects dark, med, bright situations.
One of the worse things for eating power is for the cell radio to be turned on but have no signal, like inside office building or just a bad signal area in general. The reason is the cell radio is power efficient once it establishes signal, but when it is searching for (or loses) signal it uses a lot of power.
If you are doing a lot of disk activity like taking video or hdr pictures, it would probably help to have your userdata unencrypted as this device does software (kernel) encryption and doesn't use the fast/more power efficient co-processor.

Standby is the problem, on screen times are good enough.
Anyway, I don't even know what to do at this point. Android N didn't help enough (cell data is off), I guess I can flash Android 6.0 again and then try to fix it using apps...
What do you suggest I should do, I'm out of ideas at this point.

What is the power drain over a couple of hours with *no apps installed* completely stock, and wifi/cell turned off? What is the change when wifi is turned on?

Have you set "WiFi on during sleep" to "Never"? in the Advanced WiFi settings?
In the original release, there was a bug where WiFi would stay on even if you had set it to "Never" draining battery in standby.
Somewhere between MDA89E and MHC19Q they fixed it and WiFi will go to deep sleep after being in standby for a while, but they introduced another (or exposed existing) bug where WiFi will not resume after coming out of sleep, unless you cycle WiFi off/on. So you're standby battery should be better with this setting, but it'll be a little more annoying when turning on your device.
Hello.
I've bought a G4 in March and only 20 days ago I've started to notice a odd and big battery drain. Android tells me it's "Android SO" consumption. What once drained like up to 5%, now drains more than screen. 20 days ago, battery lasted like 34h. With same usage now, turned 12h.
I've uninstalled the apps I've installed meanwhile, used it in battery eco mode and even on airplane mode, without any luck.
4-5 days ago I've installed Wake Lock Detector (no root, but with the right permissions) and Better Battery Stats. From what I understand from the reports, they don't blame any specific app but show thousands of wakelocks on Android SO. I believe sometimes it can be normal (for instance, when I run with GPS and music). Anyway, maybe the issue lies here.
What I find really odd is that those 2 apps say that the phone is awake more than 90% of the time. Like 1h of deep sleep only per full battery.
I could understand if someone says that it's the battery that had a great use already, but not only has 7 months of use, but also the phone behaviour changed (Android SO was never so high before, at least constantly).
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Suggest you check out and install the apps recommended apps on ✭[GUIDE][26-07-2016]Extreme Battery Life Thread(Greenify+Amplify+Power Nap)✭ at https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/guide-extreme-battery-life-t3095884
Read the OP thoroughly for each app discussed. The wakelock situation can be helped a good deal with Amplify and Greenify in particular - the paid versions - but I would also install AppOppsXposed - all require Xposed which requires root in order to be installed and I would also check out Power Nap to see if any incremental improvement.
You may a also want to run a malware scan ...
Thanks for the info. I checked it earlier, but most of those apps only run in root phones. I'm waiting for official Nougat in G4, mostly because haven't saw yet a Nougat image for this device without any problems, like camera not working, or such. I wouldn't mind to pay for apps that could work on this, but I want to avoid rooting. I guess I rather put Android 7, that has a bigger chance to even solve this problem, than root at this time.
Haven't said earlier but did a factory reset yesterday and device kept the behavior... I believe a hard reset would reduce almost to 0 the eventual malware problem.
No obvious alternatives for not rooted phones? Haven't this happened to someone else and been solved?
Thanks!
I had the same problem a few weeks ago...i was loosing ~30% of the battery at night with no wifi/data/gps etc. I tried everything...factory resets, different roms, greenfy & those kind of apps but the phone would not sleep. The last thing i tried was a factory reset and after i logged into my gmail account i set the phone as a new device...so no restoring apps and backups from my gmail account. Now everything is ok, my phone sleeps like a baby. I've read somewhere that it might be related with the syncing & backups....i don't really know, but you can give it a try.

Haven't tried that yet. I'll try to remove and add the device again, to avoid the pain of a new hard reset.
To have a reference, it was good to know an average percentage of other G4 deep sleep. If everyone has around 90%... maybe it's not a problem at all. The "sleep like a baby" is which percentage? Also, there are plenty babies that wake up hourly crying for a period of time...
Thanks for the tip!

My phone was awake >90% of the time(when screen was off), even in flight mode, when it had "the problem". Now things are back to normal...~2% awake when the screen is off.
Hello again.
Tried to reset a couple more times, tried to remove old phone register in my gmail account, but I wasnt successful.
How you did the
"The last thing i tried was a factory reset and after i logged into my gmail account i set the phone as a new device..."
?
Once it asks for my account, I'm not able to set it's a new device. I also did no restores... Is there a way to disconnect devices from Google account? I was only able to do so in devices I connected like one month, or more, ago, but not able to do so in the device I'm using at the moment.
One thing I did not try but that would confirm your thesis is to register device with a new account.
Anyone with an alternative?
I'm hoping LG really releases Nougat for G4 in 2017...
Today, the device returned to normality without any intervention. I can only imagine the following: since last factory reset I've disabled some apps I didn't used, like Google books, or Google music, but only yesterday I did a normal reboot (due to huge battery drain...). Eventually, some updates just took place after this reset. Anyway, even having imagined this theory, I don't believe in it. Wizardry, I bet.
