[Q] Severe battery drain and miscalibration - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello! I've been lurking around trying to solve my battery drain issue for two days without success. I have a d2att with severe battery drain, where battery would last for around 2 hrs MAX before shutting down at 40%. This was apparently an issue before (my brother was using it) when it was on stock unrooted 4.3. I installed Carbon 4.4.4 to look for improvements.
Symptoms:
Rapid battery decrease during use
Shutoff at 40% (when rebooting it would show 0%, when charging it will start at 40%)
Constant wake (I believe from the systemupdate wakelock that is unstoppable)
Feels warm during short times of use, cool when standby
Attempts to fix:
Using GSAM to monitor battery drain (just installed Betterbatterystats, will update with that info later)
Installed MyAndroid Tools and Disable service to stop systemupdate and checkin services
Autoruns to stop all systemupdateservice receivers
Dalvik cache wipe to try to fix the 40% shutoff
Privacy guard to turn off keep awake for Google play services and Android system
Privacy guard to turn off location for GNow
Have not done:
Replace battery (just ordered one that's coming in two days)
Clearing batt stats, as apparently that doesn't help
Factory reset, as it's a pain to setup again (Should this be next?)
Greenify
Xposed
I am just generally confused at this point at whether systemupdate service is turned on or off, or how to solve that, or if that is even the main problem, and what my next steps should be. I'm not an expert and can only understand half of what's going on, so any advice is greatly appreciated!
*Update: It seems that the phone is able to go to deep sleep (~50% of the time). When I use it just 5 minutes for texting, the battery can drop 5%. After reading from another thread, I re-enabled systemupdate services from Disable Services/My Android tools to see if that would solve the problem, and it looks like it is not hogging wakelock anymore; however it does revert on boot, similar to this: forum.cyanogenmod(.)org/topic/96459-systemupdateservice-wakelock-on-cm11-m7-massive-battery-drain/
Update 2: I flashed Liquidsmooth 3.1 stable instead. This time I used autoruns manager and wakelock blocker (included in liquidsmooth settings) to disable the services, but systemupdate service still manages to run, so I have to disable the block to somehow make it stop with every boot. Once that is fixed, deep sleep functions normally, but now the new problem is that Chrome browser app seems to be stuck in an AudioMix wakelock. I uninstalled Chrome updates and this seems to have fixed that issue, however battery drain is still severe (5%/2min) during active phone use. No application stands out in constant wakelock anymore, so I'm suspecting it may be the battery itself? I will switch to a new battery tomorrow to verify.
Update 3: Well since no one bothered to help, I will just post this for future reference as a log, since I solved the last part by the battery switch to an Anker battery. The phone still gets hot, and I still have to manually deactivate systemupdate service on every reboot, but now it runs for "normal" times 5-6hrs (heavy use).

To be honest, it sounds like you had a failing battery. It happens.

theres an xposed app called amplify that helps to block some wakelocks , startups and alarms. it might help.

Event log service battery drain

I currently have a problem that "Google services -> event log service" is draining my battery a lot,
I was asking this in another thread about this problem but got told I should ask here in the specific forum for my phone.
I fully charged it during night and at 2:30am I rebooted the phone and unplugged the charger.
Now in the afternoon at 5pm I checked again (haven't used the phone since then) and battery was at 62 %
Wakelock detector is showing an activity of Google-services/Event log service with 1 hour 43 minutes.
Wlan off, 3G on, GPS off, bluetooth etc off.
I disabled all unessesary syncs including google backup/restore, not helping at all.
I checked developer settings for log recording etc.. but everything is off.
It's the international E975 model btw,
I have the same issue. I think i tweaked it too much lol.
Partial wakelocks in BBS indicates EventLogService has been on for 5h.. -_-
Have you done any tweaks to it? I.e: freeze anything from titanium, greenify, etc
This is a result of frozen apps.

hi there
so if i check what apps are frozen and uninstall them, this will get rid of the problem basically, that simple??
It may just cause more problems. The reason the wakelock is even appearing as event log service is because the app is frozen, but causing wakelocks. But wait, didn't we freeze it?.. how can it still be causing wakelocks? Some other system level app is still capable of waking it, so it may or may not be something important.

cheers, actually i have LOTS of wakelock time taken from these 2:
1) Alarm Manager - Android System. this one grows by 5 units every time i unlock the phone and check, NORMAL??
2) Event Log Service - Google Services, this one is a bit more quiet but still growing silently.
Things i have on:
usually sync, but those 2 above grow regardless of sync being on or off, then i have 2 alarms in the calendar, one active and one not and some calendar notifications.
are those responsible? right now my phone is doing around 2% battery use but i notice that it grows very easily, just now i lost 1% in only 25 minutes.
the "awake" graph under battery looks strange.. sometimes it matches screen off (so good), sometimes, it seems to be on, with screen OFF for no reason whatsoever.
any idea?
thanks

Strange battery usage behaviour

I have a strange issue with my 32G WiFi FLO that I was hoping the knowledgeable members of XDA could help me diagnose.
Since I got it at launch, it's been sucking the battery dry. But not consistently. I have no idea what or why, but here's what I know so far:
All details are with auto sync OFF. WiFi OFF on sleep, location services ON (but cannot use WiFi)
Not unlocked or rooted (stock)
- From boot, and for the first 20-40 hours after that, battery usage on standby averages out to around 0.13% per hour.
- After that, and for no reason I can discern, battery usage jumps to an average of 0.84% per hour, and keeps draining like this usually until I reboot or need to charge
- Stock battery app shows no apps draining, BBS shows no apps draining stuff or excessive wakelocks and indicates the tablet is spending most of its time in deep sleep.
- Life with screen usage seems to be around 7+ hours either way, so this is as expected.
- Sent to ASUS to diagnose & repair, received with note that front camera unit replaced and OS reloaded.
- Issue is still occurring after "repair"
- apps running at the time are usually Android Keyboard, Android Services, Settings. Sometimes Play Store, Currents (even though I don't use it and have never launched it), Google Play Services as well. These are the only apps that run regardless of state of battery drain.
Can anyone think of any reason this is occurring, or where else I can go to check for more info? I'd prefer to stay stock/unrooted.
I'm looking to send it back for RMA *again*, but I'd rather tell them where to look than try and trust that they'll know where to look to fix it this time.
Guess no-one else has this issue or any ideas on where to look for this, since there are no replies

Serious battery drain issues

First of all i have tried factory reset. Im using elementalx kernel on android 4.4.4. I don't remember my custom rom's name but it was cleaner version of stock. No im not going to update to 5.0. I have tried disable some wakelocks from google play services and disabled all possible syncs. But Google keeps enabling sync for location reporting and History reporting even though i have disabled it many times! Evert single time im connected to wifi or any other way to net it soon gets enabled and massively drains battery! 70% of battery had drained in 3 hours! I hadn't even touched my device on that time. I'm sure there is way to fix this but i don't know how. I have searched everywhere but nothing worked.
Edit:
Used Wakelock Detector and found out systemupdateservice and some alarm thing are on top of list. Appereantly there is some sort of bug with systemupdateservice so its always disabled. I enabled it because thats supposed to fix it so now let's wait if its the cause of problems.

msm_hsic_host - any solutions?

Since resetting my phone and coming up to the latest 6.0.1, my phone's battery life has been terrible. I can unplug it and leave it sitting all day with minimal interaction, and I'll have less than 50% left. This morning, I went through the process of installing BBS, and the only thing that is keeping my phone from deep sleep like 99% of the time is the msm_hsic_wakelock. My phone has very little installed on it. I disabled all bloat apps, but didn't just tell PDP to disable all bloat as that usually leads to issues. Other than that, I have installed authy, the rsa app required for my job, facebook, greenify, liftmaster, and the ring app. None of these are registering in BBS at all.
I looked around the internet, and can't find anything that has a solution for this wakelock. Any way to kill it off? Do I need to go back to 5.1.1? Is this a 6.0.1 issue?
Thanks

IMS wake lock drain

Hi, I recently got my S9 but however lately I've been getting idle drain. With mobile data off, I lose about 2% every 2 hours and with mobile data on, I lose 4% every 2 hours. I have GSam installed and used ADB to give it permission for battery stats. Below are screenshots
http://imgur.com/gallery/5c4Q4j4
It seems to be from IMS service. I read that it can be from either WiFi calling or volte. I do not want to turn off either. Had anyone else experienced this? I still have good battery but this idle drain isn't normal. I haven't left my phone overnight so I guess I might try that tonight and see how much it drains
Hi there,
I am re-opening this old thread since I am facing the exact same behaviour with my new S10+. Due to IMS wakelocks, my battery drains 30-40% overnight (while I'm sleeping for 7 hours). If I put my phone in flight mode, it loses 1% overnight. Did you manage to find a solution afterall? I really hate having to put my phone in flight mode every night. Thanks in advance :highfive:

Did you ever find a solution to this? Experiencing same problem now ...
Hi ... did any of the posters above find a solution to this issue ?
I am stuck at exactly the same problem: The phone (S9, stock-rom) drains approx 20% over night, doing nothing. Reason (according to GSam Battery Monitor) is the high power consumption of Apps > Android-System > 48 mins (264 count) wakelocks caused by ImsService.
If you look at the picture of batter usage in Gsam you clearly see, the phone stays active all night and barely sleeps/dozes :-(
What I already tried, without any effects:
- clearing cache of all "IMS*" Services in App Manager
- wiping cache partition
- disabling AOD (Always On Display) and VoLTE Telephony
- removing and re-adding google account
I am a little clueless and would like to avoid a factory reset as especially all those nasty "push-tan applications" will most likely need a re-authorization :-(
I'd heavily appreciate any hint.
After a long journey it seems that I found a solution: At least on Android 10 there seems to be a bug in google location services. If you disabled location history, the API requests are still made but get stuck each time (every 60 sec.) and keep the phone awake instead of returning to sleep.
The "bitter" solution was to turn on Google Location history again ... and suddenly the drain ends, as the detection and transmission of the location is ways faster, than letting the die in a timeout ...
