Hi all,
I woke up this morning to find out that my rear camera was suddenly not working. When I open the camera app, the front facing camera seems to function normally while the rear facing camera just shows a black screen, and after a while it shows a message saying "media server died, closing camera.", shortly after crashing.
Other apps that make use of the camera have the same issue.
I have already tried restarting the phone, completely shutting it off and turning it back on again, and installing a different nightly. None of these had any effect, sadly. If anyone has any tips, please
Thanks.
Current lineageOS version is 14.1-20170818-NIGHTLY-m8

My rear camera suddenly stopped working. My phone didn't get any hurt in nowhere, just suddenly it stopped working. I was takin photos since 10 minutes before, I locked the phone and I noticed that Torch tile disappeared. I thought it was a bug and I didn't care anymore. The day before I noticed that even rear camera stopped working, I was trying to take a photo but the "change camera" (from front to rear) disappeared in every camera app I was using, camera apps opened by default with front camera opened. I tried to reflash ROM thinking that it was a ROM problem (even if I was using the same rom since months ago and I've never had any kind of problem), no results. Reflashing everything starting from stock firmware, no results. As a last hope, I tried to replace the rear camera by buying a new one, but the problem it's still here. Could someone that experienced the same problem, tell me where the problem could be? Or maybe some possible fixes, every kind of help is appreciated. Thanks.
Same
I have the exact same problem. After wiping the cache the rear camera is recognised and I am able to take a picture with it (which is not saved into gallery) but about 5 minutes later the option to switch to rear camera has gone and all camera apps (including social media such as snapchat) is stuck on front camera. This leads me to think it's not a hardware problem but rather that of software with which I am running cm13 nightlies that I have updated every day for the past week in the hope it will be patched.
I have this exact same problem on my d855 too..!
Sooooo frustrating, I've been looking everywhere for a fix, tried full factory reset the other day (I'm running full regular stock with no root or anything), and sadly that didn't work either... I'm glad to read someone has tried changing the camera hardware, cos that was I step I've considered taking, but I now know would be a waste of time and money...
But still, the problem persists..!

I don't think that's a software problem simply for one reason: I'm on the same rom and kernel since months and camera worked fine. It stopped working suddenly with no reason.

Yeah now you made me understand why the camera worked for some minutes. I'll try clearing cache after installing new camera module. I'll report the result. Thanks anyway.
Edit: It's not working. At first boot, systemUI doesn't load well, when I reboot everything works fine but rear camera isn't working. Maybe late I'll try with phone's camera. Now I'm using the new one bought some days ago.
same here!!!!! I'm using LOS13.1 on my d855 and i can't fix it... any idea?
What OS are you guys running? Is everyone experiencing the issue on Cm13?
Also try cleaning the camera connections really well.
I have same problem. Although i expirienced it first time on Lineage OS 14.1. Now 30B, but it still not working. I was listening to music through external speakers, and suddenly it stopped working. Music app was "playing" but i couldnt hear anything and when i exit the app my phone just stops working and starts being laggy as hell. Later that day i found out my camera is not working. I tried reattaching cam connector but it did not work...idk if i should order a new camera or it might be a software fix or something
same problem
happened to me after upgrading to 6.0 , downgraded back to 5 with no luck , even opened my phone and released and reconnected the 3 cables inside with no luck at all . don't know what to do
It's "good" to see other people with the same problem as me.
I replaced the camera and it still won't work.
I'm afraid that it might the problem with our motherboard...How can software block our camera even tho all of us fully reinstalled ROMs/Modems etc? It would be awesome if dev would see this and tell us what is the actual cause of this
If you reinstalled the entire OS using a TOT method, no files are left behind. This is more likely a hardware issue.
The Camera module is extremely close to the problematic hot chip on the G3 so it's not impossible something got messed up.
I have a d852 in Canada that doesn't get hot and I'm having this problem too. Going to order a new camera since I know this is a hardware issue. Hopefully fixed the issue. Not cool having no rear camera or flashlight
It's impossible Every G3 gets hot...you either are not heavy user or idk...but every G3 that i've held had the issue of overheating at some point...and indeed it can ruin everything...imagine 120C on your processor...that kills everything around it...idk if my processor got that hot as i've seen in some cases it did on internet, but it did go up to 90ish...and that is too damn hot
FIX ISSUE be Done
Hi all .
Problem method for repair
Issue is easy buy new rear camera D855 or this same conector D820/D821/Nexus5 is this same and all works fine I'm tested on my D855 International
camera From D821 perfect fit and don't had any foult. Great work and my G3 alive rear again :good:
( !!! URGENT !!! Don't put any paper or any dirt this is short fix and maybe You can crack connector camera on motherboard !!!)
If U still like Your's G3 don't put any **** tourial with fix BUY NEW CAMERA couple $$ AND FIX very cheap and clean LG STILL ALIVE
(Camera had two IC chip and that is problem (burned or heat out)
Flash light it's well had same problem if U have problem camera,
In camea foult You cant turn on flashlight (software thinking camera all time working if camera is broke).
If u tru turn on flashlight he said (on broke camera) " Immpossible turn on flash light when camera work" !!!!!
So I tried LineageOS on my Moto G4 Plus and I was going to keep it until I had an extremely big issue with the camera... Every time I took a picture, no apps could read it. I tried other camera apps and the same issue happened. For a while, Open Camera was working fine but then it had the same issue too. What would happen is it would show the image for a second and then change to gray. On Google Photos it would just load forever. Instagram wouldn't even let me tap on the images. Eventually I reflashed the stock Nougat rom back on my phone and well, everything works. Has this happened to anyone else and is there a solution? If so I would love to know so I can retry LineageOS
Quick Note! I tried Resurrection Remix (which is based on LineageOS) and I had no problem with the camera...
I had my htc one M8 running the htc stock Android 6.0.1 perfectly. Some day I decided to install lineage-14.1-20170109-UNOFFICIAL-m8 wich is Android 7.1.1 for htc one m8, and at the begining every thing runs fine except the rear camera. When I opened the camera application (the AOSP app, the HTC app, whichever camera app) I realized that the camera dealyed a bit to auto focus, after that I could take photos. Eventually the auto focus delays more and more, and now the rear camera never get focus, the image in the camera application shakes indefinitely trying to focus. Another weird thing is that the phone emits a sound when I have the camera application opened, I hear the sound specifically in the region around the rear camera, it's like a repeatedly click. All these problems occur with the rear camera, the front camera works fine. When I first get this problem I flash back my htc stock ROM, to verify if the problem was physically of the camera, but with the stock ROM everything works fine, then I flashed again the same LineageOS version, and the problem starts again, I thought that could be the LineageOS ROM that I was using, and I tested other ROM, this time the lineage-14.1-20170309-nightly-m8-signed, and the problem continues. Right now I had the first LineageOS ROM installed, the one in which all started, and I have not idea what's going on.
If anyone have any idea please leave a comment.
(Sorry for my bad english)
Thanks in advance.

Hey guys,
N7105 Lineage 7.1.2 (2017/06/20)
Pretty green to all this. Just reimaged with the latest Lineage, got that working - slick system - only foible this time around is Camera Error ("Can't connect to the camera")
Note, I replaced the back (rear facing) camera with an ebay special recently. The samsung image was ok with it, took photos & clear enough. Cyanogen and Lineage both error out as above on attempting to use the camera.
Pity the backup didn't work. I might end up reversing all the way back to stock at this rate; now, thoughts. Could it be the replacement camera? An N7100 camera, for example? Is there a possible workaround to that - or am I barking up the wrong tree?
I'd prefer Lineage to the stock OS, for sure - if the camera problem can be resolved.

Can't connect to camera is an old cyanogen (now lineage) problem. To fix this i download mediaserver killer application from play store and this fixes the issue.
This error is usually faced if a third party camera app is messing with the main camera. Eg- snapchat.
Funny app that one. It demands SU, eventually #SuperSU notices and I grant it SU access... it continues to demand SU when you try to open it.
Also, it hasn't fixed the problem (yet). Is there a trick to this?
Tried it via Play Store and by APK download & manual install, same results.
*Edit: You've given me a new direction to look in though. Tried safe mode, camera still errors out. Will go through some more steps of this article later.

Do restarting phone solves the problem temporarily?
Nope, no affect from restarting.
Update: Popped the old camera back in, guess what. It works. Additionally, with the replacement camera in I lost Torch function along with rear camera; front camera did work in third party apps, just not rear. Re-installing the original rear camera regained all functions.
Of course, I replaced it for a reason - liberal use of solvents damaged the lens in that camera, I still have to find another replacement. Probably not from ebay though...
Really rocking 7.1.2 and having root access on tap, big cheers to the Lineage mob and the #SuperSU guy; these are great packages, and done just for the love? Crazy guys, good work.
Long story short, my main back camera works fine. Yet neither the front cam nor aux cams work. Either they are non-responsive or the app force closes.
I am using crDroid now but it was the same with Paranoid Android as well. I cannot remember well but with LineageOS they were working. I once wiped everything in my internal memory, that might have left some mark - or with LineageOS it was raw10 while now it is raw_sensor. Yet I cannot get how these might be problematic.
Any ideas about what might be the problem, or even better, any solutions? Even the slightest hint would be more than welcome. I don't care about so-called macro or "selfie" cam but I liked wide-angle and I am trying to have it again.
I have tried SELinux permissive, did not work. I patched a fix from a Telegram group, something v2, did not work. I tried different cams, did not work. So far all my attempts failed. If I'll somehow find one, I'll just add it to the post.
Thanks in advance for reading, and even more importantly, caring to answer - if you have one.
