[Q] Use T-Mobile Samsung S4 on AT&T

I plan to buy the T-Mobile Galaxy S4. Worried that I may not be happy with T-Mobile's coverage is it possible to use it on AT&T's network? If so will it be able to pick up all bands?

According to [1] the t-mobile version of the S4 has the following LTE bands: 1/2/4/5/7/17, which correspond to 2100 1900 1700 850 2600 700MHz.
- Bands 1 and 4 are clear, as those are the main t-mobile LTE bands.
- Metro PCS uses band 2, so given the pending merger to t-mobile, this makes sense as well.
- Band 17 is used by AT&T, which would hopefully mean a T-Mobile Galaxy S4 can be fully used on AT&T including LTE.
- Band 7, is commonly used around the world, including Canada, some countries in South America and Asia and many countries in Europe. So this should allow for using the device in many countries abroad e.g. through roaming, or buying a pre-paid sim when overseas on business or holidays.
But why did they include Band 5? According to wikipedia [2] that band is only used by very few carriers around the world. Would it have not made more sense to include e.g. Band 3 (1800MHz), which is commonly used for LTE in Europe and Asia, including most of the European T-Mobile networks. That would have allowed for much broader roaming.
Furthermore, can someone confirm that the information on the webpage is correct and particularly that T-mobiles S4 really has band 7 (2600MHz) included?

Theoretically, yes, it should work on AT&T fine as the device does support all of AT&T's bands, including their LTE bands. Of course it needs to be SIM unlocked in order for you to be able to put an AT&T SIM in it though.

To your question why. .....if they did include this to American version S4 then there will not be difference to international S4 LTE version. ....There is two different devices 9500&9505...it's a market democracy that separate this market for known reason. ....otherwise ....There is going to be way some time on road to flash different modem to give you other bands. ....flashing modem will not make hardware frequency to make changed. ...

T-mobile mostly uses the 1800Mhz band in Europe (UK, Germany, Croatia, Hungary, Netherlands and Czech Republic) although it does have some licenses for the 2600MHz band as well. 2600MHz is heavily used by other carriers in Europe though, which is why I was interested to get a confirmation that the t-mobile US version of the Galaxy S4 really does have that band included, as I will likely want to use it in Europe too.

If you go to US tmobile website and go to specification you will see exactly what you looking. ...just remember there is also important to look for given band on frequency you will operate in Europe. ..my note II Was running fine on A1 Austria Tmobile Orange and tele ring company. ...When I was in Europe. ...in Australia I was not capable running LTE be cause I do have 2600 MHZ frequency just no band for Australia. ....

Ah, looks like they have updated their page to include more details now. When I looked a couple of hours ago it still only said "LTE compatible" with no indication of the exact frequency and bands it supports.
As the specs on t-mobile.com and samsung's us page now match in claiming it does have support for band 7, I'll assume it actually does. But given that the AT&T page still claims the S4 has FM radio and the supported LTE frequencies of the AT&T spec page don't match the Samsungs's spec page, it seems even the "official" specs can't always be trusted.

So the T-mobile version should work no problem in Canada if we end up with a bootloader locked version up here.

Well, it looks like the Tmobile version of the S4 may be the one to get for a lot of us on ATT and in Canada since it has the right bands and the bootloader isn't locked. It just needs to be sim unlocked.

i am very interested in this option. I guess what we need is some confirmation from folks in the field/first hand experience.
I guess we need to wait for someone to sim unlock and test the LTE?

Is the sim on the T=mobile version a micro? AT&T uses full size sims. Of course, getting a micro-sim from AT&T or using a sim cutter should work, but it is still a consideration. It also needs to be determined if the radio (software baseband) of the T-Mobile S4 takes advantage of the Hardware frequencies the phone supports. In other words, will it be optimized for AT&T networks.

The next important question is - how do you SIM UNLOCK the T-mobile S4?
If T-Mobile doesn't give you the unlock code, then this is moot.

SIM locked it would be as always. Bootloader locked no one knows yet. SIM unlock on previous Galaxy devices has been done for free, or for a minimal cost.

Order it from Negri Electronics and it comes unlocked, or order an unlock code online somewhere.

I want to buy it from a US Carrier be use it comes with US Warranty. I bought Intl Note before and went dead on me...no warranty of course. I know this is rare, but having a dead $600 phone once is enough for me
Anyways, if Tmo won't provide the SIM unlock code (AT&T does), then there's no point buying it from Tmo because the phone is always locked to their network.
I would have bought the phone from AT&T, but the bootloader is locked.

Ouch, that's understandable for sure. I've been lucky that my international Galaxy S I-III are all still running well.
Did you buy it from an online store that claims to have a warranty or eBay or similar?

I bought the Note 1 from Amazon - the seller was selling it through Amazon Prime. When I searched for the International Note, none that I found (eBay, Amazon, etc.) offer a 1-year warranty with Samsung USA.
Interestingly, I used to buy the International version of Nokia phones (remember those good ol day?) and Nokia USA WILL honor the warranty (I have to ship it to Melbourne, FL).
I wish Samsung USA will do the same or have a local Samsung store, like Sony Store so I can buy the phone full price from them and have full warranty. Heck, even Amazon and NewEgg are selling the Xperia ZL unlocked with US warranty! Right now my options are limited (AT&T have locked bootloader, T-Mobile SIM locked, I don't want CDMA phones).

My understanding is that the AT&T Note 8 is only available in the US. So the short answer to your question is -- nowhere.

There was 1 on ebay US when I posted. BIN $550 but not sure if they shkp to CA tho.
Mine was delivered yesterday. I added 2 lines to my share plan. Got 1 S4 Active and a Note 8 LTE for $362 shipped. The Active I'm selling and terminating the line. Needed to buy Active for $99 to get the Note 8 for $199. If I get the $100 billing credit it showed I got.a smoken deal.
The AT&T promotion might make more available on eBay possibly.

There is an sgh-i467M model for Canada. Samsung just hasn't released the details about it yet. Pretty sure it's coming here and it will be different than the U.S. one. Maybe give it one more week. Starting to see leaks about July 11.

You could be right but I don't remember seeing a difference with the Note II. There's always the advantage of the proper frequencies and warranty coverage though.

SGH-I467 uses north-american lte frequencies so its the same for Canada and US
Finally found one on ebay, should arrive in a few days
I just dont get it why nobody sells them yet on ebay !!

Well for one thing the LTE Bands most used in Canada is the AWS 1700/2100 and then the 2600 Band. Most people in Canada don't want the AT&T version. They want the full version with phone function. The HK or Singapore version has the 2600 LTE Band but you have to watch out for the HSPA Bands because some of those models are missing the 1900 3G Band. Rogers/Fido uses the 2600 Band though it's not as large an area as the AWS Band. The HK version should work but I don't know of anyone here with one to test.

I'm talking about the device as it relates to it's N5120 LTE version number not specifically the source code numbers sgh-i467, sgh-i467M. The AT&T version removed the phone earpiece hardware from their model. If you look at the HK model you will see the earpiece speaker above the Samsung logo. I don't know if the internals have been changed but the source code doesn't allow for phone function. People are trying to get the phone function to work through Bluetooth or wired headphones but I haven't heard of anyone doing it yet.
In Canada the 2 LTE Bands are AWS 1700/2100 and the 2600.
I think AT&T also use the AWS and the other one is 800 or something like that. Ok so it's the 700 not 800.

Without AWS (1700) for UMTS...you would be limited to T-mobile's LTE area only (Band 4). You will not get 3G connections.

what is the difference between unlocked version, gpe, and developer edition?

Unlocked - can use on any compatible network, locked bootloader, Sense 6.0
GPe - can use on any compatible network, locked bootloader, stock Android
Dev Edition - can use on any compatible network, unlocked bootloader, Sense 6.0

This would be good news for me, but the HTC.com support person (would they be from Let's Talk, which seems to be the the HTC.com e-commerce provider) was saying that T-Mobile LTE is not supported for the Developer edition. I have been considering canceling that order and wait for T-Mobile version to come out, but would hate any bloatware etc.
I hope the HTC support lady was wrong. How can one confirm?

It is supported, the developer edition is nothing but a ATT SKU. It has all the radios except AWS for T-Mobile HSPA in non refarmed markets. See the first page of anandtech review which has the different models along with the radios.

You can pretty much disable any bloatware I'm not sure why people are so against it when you could just disable it.

Thanks, The anandtech review is indeed quite comprehensive, quite impressed. I am convinced that the Dev Edition will work with T-Mobile HSPA+ at least as I am in one of the refarmed areas. Hope LTE will work fine as well though the experiences of people over on the M7 forums worries me. Even if LTE remains locked on T-Mobile, it would be great if a software/radio flash would work to enable T-mobile LTE on the Dev-edition, though I could not find a mention of anyone successfully doing that in M7 forums

Well if you are in a refarmed area then you will have hspa+ or 3G on the 1900 band. You don't have to flash anything to enable LTE since the dev edition has both tmobile and AT&T LTE bands. Only thing missing in the dev edition is the AWS 1700 for HSPA and since you are in refarmed area you will get HSPA on 1900.
Personally, I will wait for the tmobile version on 11th and as soon as we get S-Off I'm going to fully convert it to a dev edition. In that way I have the full tmobile radio as well as HTC sense minus carrier crap.

Would getting the google play version now be just as good as the t mobile radio, if not better because it has better resale-ability to AT&T users as well?

Yep the Google play edition is the one with max hspa and LTE radios. Basically full compatibility with T-Mobile and ATT. ATT and Dev edition are same as Google play edition minus one band ( AWS 1700 HSPA band). T-Mobile edition has very less radio and not fully compatible with ATT LTE.
There should have only been one gsm model, that is the Google play edition model. Then they could put whatever ROM they want based on ATT, T-Mobile or stock android.
Morons at HTC just make life tough for us.

I think the blame rests on the carriers, AT&T in particular as they wanted to discourage people moving to T-Mobile with the crippled hardware (or software, I hope it is this one). AnandTech page suggested as much: "As far as I can tell only the AT&T and Google Play Edition SKUs support carrier aggregation. The two SKUs are quite similar from a cellular standpoint, with the AT&T model locking out UMTS band 4 to discourage movement to T-Mobile."
I understand that Band 4 is AWS 1700MHz (like you mentioned).
HTC are probably not in a great bargaining position with the carriers because of its own financial situation. I think Apple has been able to override carrier requests because of its superior position and carriers not being able to remove iPhones from their roster.
BTW I think I am fine with getting the Dev edition from HTC as it is cheaper than GPE(and has no tax) and arrives sooner than the T-Mobile one, with potentially more resale value having AT&T bands.

Yes you can, at least with M7 it was possible. And once you get S-off you can fully convert one model to another including model Id, cid etc.

I understand that Band 4 is AWS 1700MHz (like you mentioned).
HTC are probably not in a great bargaining position with the carriers because of its own financial situation. I think Apple has been able to override carrier requests because of its superior position and carriers not being able to remove iPhones from their roster.
BTW I think I am fine with getting the Dev edition from HTC as it is cheaper than GPE(and has no tax) and arrives sooner than the T-Mobile one, with potentially more resale value having AT&T bands.

Yeah makes sense man. Forget the carrier versions which they don't have control. At least the Dev and unlocked editions should have been based on gpe model instead of the ATT. That was totally with HTC control, but may be financially just made sense for them to use ATT model. Whatever it is hopefully they fix this next year.

Yes M8 Developer Edition supports T-Mobile HSPA (1900MHz) and LTE. The refarmed areas with LTE cover over 200 million users now according to T-Mobile. The M8 GPe includes AWS HSPA (1700MHz) for T-Mobile.
I'm using M8 Developer Edition on T-Mobile LTE right now with zero issues.

Don't buy a USA phone to use in Europe they're different for a reason. The Asia version is more likely to be compatible with European bands.

Certainly not Verizon or Sprint!

To be 100% sure of compatibility, buy the EU handset if you're in the EU - it makes sense

I would but it just don't worth the money, both europe and asia version are way more expensive, so i prefer to go with a cheaper device, 32gb and withouht lte. But still, at least one usa network should support band 3 and 7, anyone know?

Having a warranty and full support from HTC is more than worth the money IMO

I'm from Israel, we don't have an offical HTC in here so it doesn't change a lot. I will probably also install roms so the warranry isn't that usefull :/

Agree. Plus, not sure if the OP intends to root or not. But left stock, the AT&T version in particular has critical functions disabled (WiFi hotspot); and you will also typically not receive OTA updates outside the US. I'd stay away from buying the AT&T variant for use in other countries, unless you have a definitive reason to pick that variant.

Why would you assume that? According to the following Wiki, those bands are not supported in the US:

According to gsm arena, the AT&T and Verizon variants support LTE 1800 and 2600 MHz (bands 3 and 7, respectively); probably for international roaming purposes. But I'd still recommend buying the Euro or Asian version over either of these. And gsm arena is not always 100% accurate, so I'd take it with a grain or salt and research more before making any decision:

Thanks for your help, but again, I know buying it from europe or asia is the best solution but in that case i wont get 32gb and it will cost me 300$ more, It just doesn't worth it since lte is still not available and it will be only in israel by the end of 2014. And i will install a custom rom, so OTA updates and the carrier bloat doesn't bother me that much.
I also don't think gsmarena is that accurate. accordint to htc website these are the bands:
EMEA: 800/900/1800/2600 MHz
Asia: 700/900/1800/2100/2600 MHz
AT&T: 700/850/AWS/1800/1900/2600 MHz
Sprint: FDD 800/1900 MHz , TDD 2600 MHz
Verizon: 700/AWS/1800/2600 MHz
TMUS: 700/AWS MHz

I don't see a difference between this, and what is posted on GSM Arena (the links I posted).
AWS band is 1700/2100 MHz (Band 4). Its a bit confusing that GSM Arena lists them like they are 2 different bands. But one is used for upload, the other for download. So its not to be confused with 2100 Mhz (band 1) for instance.

I see, but it is diffrenet from the table band in here http://www.anandtech.com/show/7893/the-htc-one-m8-review, like verizon in htc site has the 1800 mhz but in the table on anandtech channel 3 isn't there.

You can probably find a lot of websites that have incorrect specification information on this (and other) phones. That's unfortunately just a fact. I think I've even seen spec errors on HTC's on website for some of their devices. Your best bet is to get as much reliable info as you can. Since HTC's own website agrees with GSM Arena, I'd go with those. But that is just my own conclusion.
In any case, I wouldn't recommend the Verizon (CDMA) version. You don't need CDMA, and it might introduce a whole lot of needless complications. The CDMA versions also don't seem to have quite the developer support that the GSM only versions enjoy.

Hey,
I am also looking for buying the phone form the US although I am not from there (I am from Israel as well but currently in Australia), I was thinking about getting the Unlocked version but I'm not sure which bands does it support, I tried looking on GSMarena, HTC website but couldn't find any info and when I asked the Online chat support they did not know the answer, so do you have any idea which bands the unlocked version supports and do you think there would be a problem with bands if I get it from the US and use it in Israel/Aus?, as the other user said, it is way cheaper in the US, the 32GB in the US is cheaper than the 16GB in AU!

Found much conflicting info on HSPA band support for the US unlocked/developer model.
htc.com says it supports 3G UMTS: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz. But is also says it supports 4G LTE: FDD: Bands 1,3,5,7,8,20,28, which is COMPLETELY wrong so i don't know if to trust htc.com.
Can anyone confirm the UMTS band support for this device? I am most interested in 900mhz UMTS because of trips to New Zealand where 900 mhz UMTS is often used.

Really dont know about it, but as far as i know you can flash radio bands anyways, so look for it on the web or this site, i use dev with no prblems at all in mexico with LTE. =D

I am looking into getting the HTC One M9 through AT&T but may switch to T-Mobile in the future.
As such I want a phone that fully supports both networks ...
I found a thread that it is supposedly possible to flash the AT&T phone to support developer ROMs but I can't find any information whether it is possible to also change band support. According to GSM Arena the AT&T version of the phone also supports LTE band 4 and 12 (needed for T-Mobile) but it doesn't support VoLTE on band 12, nor does it have 3G AWS (1700/2100), though of course there is a T-Mobile version of the phone WITH support for all of those.
Can I simply flash my phone so that I can (a) use CM13/AOSP roms and (b) so that the radio uses the proper AT&T or T-Mobile bands and tech?

WELL I DONT BELIVE cm13/AOSP WOULD BE BEST OPTION I FLASHED DVEELOPER 2.11 AND OVER IT VIPERONE 3.5.0 (WWE BASE 2.10) ANS WORKS FINE, AFAIK.... The T-mobile version of the M9 supports the most bands. The AT&T and Developer Edition are identical and are missing some bands needed for t-mobile LTE (Volte) support in some areas. Flashing different radios will not enable bands the phone does not have. Theirs more information in the T-mobile M9 forums

Thanks for the reply. I have checked GSM arena, plus anything else I could find on google. I don't see a listing for the unlocked/developer edition on this page. I see EMEA, Verizon, ATT and T-mobile.
And yes, sorry, I didn't realized there was an AWS for HSPA, i was just thinking about band 4 LTE on ATT which I think is AWS.

It's pretty difficult to find out info on band support, and I have no idea why. It should be readily available...
Anyway, have a look at this: http://wireless.fcc.gov/hac_documents/150813/9135276_21.PDF
Based on that, there are four models sold in the U.S., which are:
0PJA100 (which appears to be the AT&T version)
0PJA120 (which appears to be the TMO USA version)
0PJA200 (which appears to be the Sprint version)
0PJA300 (which appears to be the Verizon version)
The AT&T model supports the following: UMTS 850MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz.
Now, that said, if you look on AT&T's site, they list their model as 0PJA110, so obviously either the FCC site is wrong or the AT&T site is wrong.
I happen to have the 0PJA110 model, which is also the Rogers model (so it would make sense that the AT&T version is 0PJA110 because Rogers and AT&T generally have the same devices, and their networks are generally the same frequencies). Based on HTC Canada's site, the Rogers model supports UMTS 850MHz, 1700MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz.
Now, for the assumption: From what I have read (but I haven't personally confirmed), the unlocked and developer models are the same as the AT&T model. If that is indeed the case, then you have your answer: No UMTS 900MHz support the unlocked and/or developer models (in fact, not UMTS support on any U.S. model).

I know this is a delayed followup, but I wanted to say thanks for this. I finally got HTC to confirm that UMTS 850MHz, 1700MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz are the official specs for the US unlocked edition(which, oddly, is marked 0PJA110 on the back).
I am pushing them for a refund for false advertising. I was so concerned that these specs could be wrong before I purchased the phone, that I did a chat with HTC and they assured me the correct specs were UMTS 850MHz, 900MHz, 1700MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz. Once they confirmed these specs for me, I purchased the phone. Now they confirm they told me wrong. Very frustrating experience.
I am waiting to hear back about getting a refund. I am hoping the come through, this is crazy.
