Oreo - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note5

Do you think note 5 will get Android Oreo

Not likely, but anything is possible. We've hit the two upgrades that Samsung usually supports; Lollipop to Marshmallow to Nougat.

Almost certainly correct. We haven't even gotten 7.1.1 but only 7.0......not complaining.....just being realistic.
My wish would be to get unlockable bootloader and ability to flash roms/custom kernels.

Thread closed. AT&T just like any carrier is in the business of selling new phones, not supporting existing ones with firmware updates. This is affirmed by locking the bootloader, so we can root or sideload any unapproved firmware.
I'm jumping ship to the Note7 FE of 8 when it becomes more affordable. I have no complaints with my N920A other than a defective wacom digitizer (so my sPen doesn't work properly).

It SHOULD get Oreo. No reason why it can't handle Oreo

You need to understand that carriers only make money selling new devices, not making software updates for old ones.
The Note5 CAN run Oreo, but there is not revenue for AT&T to provide it. Your N920A has a locked bootloader. AT&T can now make money on you by forcing you to buy a newer phone since your device can't be updated unless through AT&T (with the locked bootlader).

I think everyone understands that carriers are all about the money. However, it won't break their banks to provide an Oreo update and further security patches to AT&T customers. This is the least they can do it they won't unlock a bootloader. Not everyone can or wants to update to the newest phone. I can't afford a brand new PC laptop but at least the one I have (from 2011 mind you) is able to run Windows 10 and the latest security patches to go along with it. Can you imagine if Dell sold laptops and after two years said "sorry no more Windows updates. Please buy the newest model from our website" or if Microsoft only did updates for two years on all PCs?
Not everyone has cash to upgrade and some don't want to update. Those two year old phones should not be considered obsolete.
I wanted to add i have the t-mobile variant so my bootloader can be unlocked and I can root/flash a rom but I shouldn't have to. I should get Oreo. The phone is two years old and still capable. No excuse for Samsung not to support it one more year plus additional security patches. Also remember when that wanna cry virus went around earlier this year? Microsoft put out a patch for people still on XP. XP! That's circa early 2000s....just saying

It does. AT&T loses revenue by YOU not shelling out big bucks for the lastest device. They already budgeted their annual profits for the year based on making a new sale to you (with a locked bootloader). Your point with Microsoft and Windows XP is valid only because XP users genuinely don't see the need to update (or can't afford to update obsolete hardware) and as such at that point it doesn't cost Microsoft anything else.
When a carrier bakes their bloatware in a ROM, there is a lot of time testing compatibility and all that stuff (kinda like R&D). For them to do this on a device where they already have your money, makes no incentive for them.
I also have a T-Mobile device with an unlocked bootloader along with my N920A. There is still not incentive for T-Mobile to roll-out Oreo until after they have sold out all the latest devices with Oreo as stock firmware

Apple does this with iPhones running iOS. Try getting the latest iOS to flash on the iPhone 2G/3G/3Gs/4/4s.
Try getting the latest version of Whatsapp or Facebook to run on any of the above mentioned devices (2G- 3Gs).
Apple devices have a limited Operating System shelf life, so that the end-user keeps having to buy a new device every 3 years (based on the trend I'm seeing).

Samsung is a member of the "Open Handset Alliance" what this means is that they are only OBLIGATED to support OS updates for the first 18 months from the initial release of the device. Since our phones are at least 2 years old, we should not expect to be getting Oreo just because the hardware can support it.

You can't fairly compare Windows and Android.
Microsoft have to consider the diverse variety of hardware out there (intel vs AMD, NVidia vs ATI, etc) and as such have to be conservative with their required specifications and keep the coding very efficient. For this reason, Windows 10, does not require any more resources than Windows 7.
Google on the other hand, only need to think about Exynos vs. Qualcomm, and very few deviations. Samsung can make touchwiz as bloated as they want once they don't max out the 4GB RAM for our devices and can keep at least 2 background applications running smoothly (for multi-window)

Guess you have pretty solid points. I can understand that yes AT&T, T-Mobile etc are businesses and really care about the $. I guess my frustration comes from Samsung and carriers planned obsolescence. We all have a budget and if they're not going to update phones that are two years old then I'll keep my money and just go the root and ROM way until my Note 5 dies. I can't stand paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars for a phone that's yesterdays news just a year or two later. It really is ridiculous. Theyre about the money and I'm about my money.....so I'll choose to not buy the latest phone

Would we at least see 7.1?

I "feel" that too much time has passed for there to be hope for the N920A to see an official 7.1
We can anticipate another security update to cover the missing months (as released by Google/Samsung), but that might be about it since it wouldn't be in AT&T's best interest to continue supporting devices that they've (officially) stopped selling. Since your locked bootloader can't even take a port of 7.1 eventually you will be frustrated and buy a newer / latest device to continue getting these updates. This is my issue with Google and Android's fragmentation problem.
Edit: Look at it this way, at least you didn't get an iPhone with a hidden expiry date.

I had something to add: so from what I can gather it looks like Samsung phones basically have 2 years of updates before Samsung stops support. Are you telling me that the 2016 S7 will get support till just 2018 even though it could probably go further? All bootloader are locked at least in the United States anyway

No. The "Open Handset Alliance" stipulates a minimum of 18 months. If Samsung chooses to go longer, then its Samsung's good news for the customer. It still doesn't matter for the N920A unless AT&T (the carrier) actually compiles the update (since it is a locked bootloader).
Remember: Google -> Phone manufacturer -> Carrier.
If Google doesn't produce, your phone manufacturer can't make anything for your model, and your carrier can't cook the signed bloatware for your locked bootloader device

Oh gotcha. Thank you for clarification ?

Aside from the not getting Oreo (no shock there), has anyone noticed we didn't get security updates for September 2017?
The last update I got brought my device a patch to the August 2017 security update. I think AT&T has finally pulled the plug and left us for dead.

Consider yourself a little luckier than me. I'm still on the July patch. T-mobile Note 5 here. No blueborne (Bluetooth patch) available yet. If AT&T or even t-mobile abandons our Notes then that's just sad. Seriously sad.

^^^Your phone is already abandoned. You just haven't been informed as yet. The most you can HOPE to get are security patches. The good news for your T-Mobile device is that you have an unlocked bootloader so you have root custom options unlike the N920A

Considering the Note 4 and S5 got security patches I would hope the Note 5 gets them. If not then I'd be better off with a Pixel...oops I don't have $800...

there are any lollipop rom for note 3 neo duos

Anyone can help me to find custom rom .... Thanks
There is very few interest in the N3N, there is even less interest in the Duos version. I think your only bet is that Sammy releases the Lollipop sometime this summer. There were rumors that the Lollipop is in testing phase and will be released in June. Knowing Samsung, that would probably mean sometime in August

To be fair, the person who confirmed the L update was from Samsung France (as far as I remember), so it should be real. But we have seen other manufacturers confirming updates and then dropping them because "it wasn't feasible" (HTC did that for the original One)

Because updates generate no revenue for the manufacturers, except Apple, because they manage to add "Value added services" to their SW updates, for instance Apple Pay, Apple Music etc. They add stuff that the user would like to pay extra. In case of Samsung, all services they tried failed miserably. Therefore, why would they spend the effort to deliver an update that'd only increase the lifespan of a product that they already sold? You might say "customer satisfaction" but let's be honest, SW updates is never the first priority of any customer. I bet 99% of Android users don't even know at which version they are (KK, JB, L)...

We were not "lucky" to get MM on the Note 5, Samsung has had no issue supporting the Note 5 and S6 series with MM since they were flagship phones. If you look at the history of Samsung's support for the previous gen phones, I'm confident they will support N for the Note 5 and S6 series unless something comes up that's significant enough for them of all companies to say no. I'd say you have a reasonable expectation to see N on the now previous gen Samsung's. I love my S7 edge though

If we get Android N it will probly be Aug or Sept of 2017 Samsung will drag its feet and AT&T will really take it's sweet time releasing it
It's not Samsung you have to be worried about, it's AT&T not finding and releasing.
Agreed, Samsung has even committed to providing the monthly security updates to the providers as soon as possible, and even AT&T has been a bit quicker in releasing those. Granted security patches are pretty easy to scan over and verify they won't screw with the AT&T side of things, but a whole new OS upgrade is definitely another story for carriers so they don't brick phones or cause software glitches because of their modifications to the firmware. Thats one thing I do like about Apple, no carrier specific software, they need to do that with Android, since pretty much all of the carrier apps are on the Play Store, and if they aren't well, I say f you to the carriers and their garbage modifications anyways, hence why I flashed the unlocked firmware to my S7 edge.
And beta avalible in Korea

I've come to terms with the likelihood that this phone will never see root. And if it does, there will be little to no development for custom roms or other goodies. I am to the point where I think the glory days of rooting and having cool software hacks that actually improve the phones are behind us. Now my opinion could be, because my last three phones have been locked down on Verizon, and my Razr M once unlocked never had great builds. The builds it did have had issues due to bootloader changes and my lack of willingness to downgrade the bootloader once other changes were made. As I recall. Still excited to see Nougat coming at least.

Clarification on Verizon 7.1.2

First of all apologies if this is in the wrong area. Please move and or let me know.
I've read through multiple threads and posts and I want to make sure I'm understanding things.
I have a pixel XL on Verizon at 7.1.2 with all the updates etc already applied (because I was stupid and didn't read before I did these things).
Based on what I read depixel8 it seems depixel8 was an option up until 7.1 andif you didn't get unlocked then then you are sol at this time. Is that right?
Am I correct that without an unlocked bootloader there is no TWRP no root and no custom ROMs? Some posts I read seem to say you can do these things with a locked bootloader. When I look at guides they all seem to say first unlock bootloader if you do that you can't go to step 2.
In short can those of us on Verizon 7.1.2 devices with a locked bootloader get TWRP root and custom ROMs?
I'm willing to try things and don't expect handouts. I just need a little guidance on where to start or someone to say yup you're sol.
No

Thank you both for the answers. Confirmed what I thought but didn't want to believe.

This is a longshot as I have been out of the ROM game for a while... but would "upgrading" to the beta of Android O (soon to be 8.0) and then flashing a stock image back (un-enrolling) would that be able to drop the phone down to 7.1.0?

I'm on 8.0 now, and OEM Unlock is still greyed out, even when I try to turn on with the sim card removed, and my "Android Security Patch Level" is May 05, 2017.... so still beyond what any of the bootloader unlocking methods have worked on....

You can sell the phone and then buy a Google version. That's the way to unlock your bootloader, the only way. And please don't let others tell you to say something is wrong with the device and return it if there is really nothing wrong. It's fraud and not well received on these forums. Your choices are to either sell it or live with it.
I am returning my Verizon phone as I just bought one right from Google... (anyone know where they ship the phones from?) Is there a special sequence in booting up for the first time to make sure the bootloader can be unlocked and VZW doesn't mess with it?

I wound up here in this thread after seeing promos pop up recently for discounts Verizon is offering on the Pixel and XL on the order of $269, as well as giving you a 100% rebate on a new Google Home as part of the package. I don't see a comparable promotion when buying directly from Google. I'm less than 2 years into our current phones, but wife and daughter are having problems with theirs, so I've been considering early replacements.
So - getting a 128GB XL via Verizon appears $269 cheaper than via Google, and I'd get a $129 rebate (6 weeks out?) if I purchase a new Google Home (already have 3 -- that's enough, but I guess I could sell the new one). Verizon's discount comes in the form of a monthly rebate, with the full credit being applied over 24 months. Not terrible, I guess, if you plan to stay with Verizon (I'm going to: I consult, and travel all over the country, and need the coverage), but annoying.
Then there's the whole issue of the locked bootloader. Sorry in advance for not being up to date on this and perhaps asking an obvious question: I know the boatloader issue would prevent rooting, and I imagine custom ROMs -- but do Verizon-branded Pixel's get all the same Android updates directly from Google as Pixels do that are unlocked, purchased directly from Google?
(please don't sneer when you see that I'm running a Droid Turbo 2! I had to replace 4 phones a year and a half ago, and the available promotions back then made it possible to get them each for $300 - a deal I couldn't afford to pass up at the time! )

Basically it comes down to this:
Verizon can screw you anyway they want. Nothing you can do. Deceptive advertising, No real service through 95% of the areas they say is great, locked bootloader on the "Google Phone" that everyone gets to have pure Android and not F%$ed with.
But, you try and do anything to it, OMG... might as well be in jail for killing someone.
When will we stop the power of these media companies?
Sorry, had to reply, I'm just so fed up with the adds, the false deals, the F%*king lies....

Yup sell or live with it. We can only blame ourselves for not researching before we bought from Verizon.
Me I'm gonna live with it and sell when pixel 2 comes out most likely.

So it's our fault they ripped us off and decided "Their Rules" apply?
No, not gonna buy it. Not gonna stand for it.
This is the attitude that got us here.
F*%$ YOU Verizon.
Stop buying their products?
Yeah, I know you can say nothing we can do, and there really is not much, but every bit counts.

They didn't rip you off. You got the device you wanted. And you knowingly bought it from Verizon whom is known to lock down devices. They never sold it with the promises that you could unlock the bootloader and flash whatever you want. Don't get me wrong I hate vzw as much as the next guy. But they didn't use false advertising to sell this device. And if you want pure Android that's untouched then you should be buying directly from Google. Not from VERIZON.
To add to this, I have pretty much exhausted all methods, and it appears that if the phone came from Verizon, without a hack, there is no possible way to OEM Unlock! Here are the facts that I have;
1. I'm on firmware 7.1.2 - NJH47F - which is the non-Verizon firmware from the stock image download page
2. I have tried with both AT&T and T-Mobile SIM's
3. I chatted with Google Support, there is nothing they can do
4. I chatted with Verizon Tech support, there is nothing they can do (supposedly)
If it comes from Verizon, and you are past 7.1 then you cannot use dePixel8...
I can't believe there is no one willing to find even a temp Root exploit and find a way to mod the bootloader.img, even with a substantial bounty out there! I'd add $50 to it at this point!

Why is this phone so slow to receive updates?

I recently got the a520f after a few years with the iPhone. I was happy enough but then released there is 2 roms, 1 in alpha and another which is abandoned then noticed the updates from Samsung are sparse at best.
I'm unlocked in UK and stuck on 6.0.1, they "used" to say unlocked got updates first, noticed the way I said "used to" because carriers seem to be releasing 7.0 before unlocked, and while on the point 7.0 at this stage when Oreo will soon be released, even bringing the phone out with 7.0 would have been slow when 7.1 was available.
I am thinking I have made the wrong decision with the a520, Samsung are slow with updates anyway yes but the a520 seems to be at the bottom of Samsungs list of priorities. Last years a510 even has 7 for a while now.
hi !
Yes ,all people here want updates with another android version but i think that the most important thing is to enjoy with this phone :
it's a device with MM6 have enought power for to play game , it have the best super amoled screen ,it have a fabulous battery life ! , a fingerprints and "near" 20 differents sensors ,he have a good modem and hardware for 4G , this MM + sansung adds have all useful functions and parameters ....and the middle economic mode is impressive for the battery life...
The phone is receiving updates slowly cause the phone has owners all around the world, it's probably to make sure that OTA servers are not overloaded. Imagine what would happen if they released it at the same time for the whole world, the servers couldn't deliver acceptable speeds. That's just my guess though.
Nah, Samsung kinda sucks. I mean they couldnt make a proper working fingerprint sensor on stock MM, had to install nougat for the bloody thing to work.

How does Apple cope then?
That's Samsung decision to release update or not, as user we can wait for it or complaints to Samsung
Sent from my SM-A520F using Tapatalk
It has nothing to do with "the server not able to cope" or anything. There are a few reasons building up to the devices being in literally the bottom of the pile as you put it:
1) Samsung has heavily skinned Android with a lot of added features, which all take a while to port to a new verison.
2) Costs of development, Q/A testing and everything else that needs to be done before the update gets released public (not doing the update obviously means a lot of saved money)
3) Most people don't care about updates or are even annoyed by them and think they are something evil. That's excluding heavy updates to a new version which slow down the phone by a large margin with features you could have lived without (Apple are doing this), those updates really are evil. Due to the lack of updates though, this rarely happens on Android in all fairness.
4) It's a mid range price device
5) Samsung's policy of not wanting to update the phones too much anyway so the user buys a new one
The phone is probably going to be updated to 7.0 within the next month or two. I doubt extremely it will get updated to 8.0.
This is unacceptable for a phone that has come out for 2017, to not got an update of an OS to a version that is released in 2017 just a little over an year later. We should definetly not put up with it and complain to Samsung however, not on XDA.
We should make sure OEM's take note that we want our phones updated to new Android versions fast for at least a few years, just like iOS devices. And on top of complaining, we should vote with our wallets also. That gets the chain moving.

That is tackled in another way. Your phone randomly receive updates in batch.
Yes you can get an update if you manually go into settings and download updates.
But again it is automatically provided in random batches.
Samsung is late at updates because they have a large number of models.
Not like Iphone that only support 3 models of past I think.
Samsung also needs to provide stable updates which take a lot of testing.
Again it depends on your country and provider when the start rolling updates.
By the way A5 got certified for oreo.

It has Oreo in Russia now
