What firmware does the new fire TV 2 ship with? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know this answer?

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? I'm guessing the current firmware or maybe an older one. You just never know.

Mine came with 5.2.4.2, bought last week in MediaMarkt in Germany.
Today it goes back to store to be replaced by Shield TV.
No root - no Amazon TV.

Due to the large number of factors at play, it can be very difficult to say, sight unseen, which firmware will be on a device.
I have a few tips if you are trying to find one with rootable firmware. It's difficult but not impossible.
Where to look:
-Very high volume vendors receive a large number of devices at a time & take awhile to sell out
Leaving potential for in-stock devices they received several months back.
-A vendor who accepts returns, only sells AFTV devices by special order (or both) has potential, if one was bought & returned, or ordered & not picked up.
What to avoid:
-Direct from Amazon
-Refurbished devices
Both will most likely be on up-to-date firmware.
Firmware version can be estimated by dissecting the serial number on the box
If you're looking online, buying secondhand from non-bulk sellers will yield the best results. Just ask the seller for the serial number, or check the package if you're at a store, then plug it in to this handy tool from aftvnews: http://www.aftvnews.com/amazon-fire-tv-serial-number-decoder/
It won't tell you with absolute certainty which firmware is installed, but it will give you the 'when' and 'where' of manufacture.
Cross-reference with firmware version release dates and you can get a pretty good idea, without having to pay $50-100 to find out.
I found an unopened AFTV1 on the initial software release (unlockable bootloader) in December, and Bestbuy was even shipping out AFTVS-1's carrying 5.2.1.0 up until last Christmas.
New rootable devices are still out there, just gotta know where to look.
Good luck, hope this helps!

Here’s one from Craigslist. Apparently, they are listing on different Craigslist’s sites in the country with the same add. They are located in Provo, Utah with a store location in case anyone wants to verify they actually have some.

Woah, located in Provo, Utah and selling the Touch Pro 2 for $350? I'm about 40 minutes north of Provo, so maybe I'll check it out...
Anyone got a phone number for them? Or what is the name of the store location?

No-one said it's a fake, the craigslist "photo" is a stockphoto (a rendering).
HTC is not SELLING any of these devices yet.
Only ones released are the pre-production models, they are eg. for operators for testing.
NONE are yet for sale.
Fake. The phone hasn't been released
As I type this I am obtaining a new ROM from my source for the Rhodium.
RUU_Rhodium_TMOUS_1.04.531.0_Radio_Rhodium_3.43.25.13_Signed_Test.exe
This ROM was released to me today. There's no way that there are consumer grade devices for sale out there. I promise you, if the seller is true and has the device, the Rhodium had two stages in its development. One included hardware and software that were "non-turbo", later on the hardware was enabled with "turbo" but had to be disabled with a specialized cab. If that was not completed the firmware would stall and there would be an error stating that the hw/sw versions do not match. this was a real pain in the ass to get around that. So finally, everything is a running beta stage as of today.
Buyer beware.

its funny, i'm comparing my device with the ebay one. they look nothing alike. The back isn't even close, the keyboard looks cheap, the chrome on the edges doesn't exist, the screen size is wrong. I hate it when people try to prey on device junkies... don't they know that's like teasing a kid with candy.
I thought of china clone, probably doesn't even run winmo..

[Q] Any way to estimate firmware from a retail box?

Is there any way to estimate the Fire TV firmware version by looking at the box in a retail store like Best Buy? I am thinking of finding another older one that I can root before they are too hard to come by.
Here's my 2 cents..
Am not sure there is a way to find the firmware by looking at the box. But my recent exp is buying from Amazon is the best bet in regards to getting an older
rootable firmware. (If u get the German/English prompt's on the first screen that's a sign ur into the latest un-rootable zone.)
I got one last week and it was still on 51.1.0.1_user_510055620 - And i didn't bother to update my router to block the OTA update.
When u start it the first time it starts with checking for UPDATES screen but it doesn't actually do any updates at-least in my case. I have been running it for a
day now and its still the same. I un-plug the ethernet connection when i am not watching and it's been working so faar. I plan to do the rooting this weekend.
Good Luck !

The UK units ship with 51.1.4.0. There's no "seeing".
You would need to order one off Ebay or somewhere and import it to the UK to get a rootable unit.
Thanks guys! I might return the new one and manage to get one fom US

Anyone still getting rooted units?

I had pretty much given up hope that i'd find anymore rooted units about a month ago until today when I walked into a store and bought 3. Is there still a supply of these rootable fire tv's?

you could get them on ebay. the key is to ask what is the serial. Its hard but a few give the serial and with that you can find out if its rootable. Did you find a few or are you still looking for it. If you did buy three. would you sell any one of them for the community?
Picked up one at staples from 7/14 so I can root it. Tech guy was nice enough to find one for me after bringing out a few from 3/15 so they're still out there. just have to sort through there inventory.

After making this post I have received 3 more rooted units in the mail today from staples. I am beginning to wonder if they stopped making these...
I've actually picked up 7 in the last 3 weeks all at staples....they still keep getting them in.
Most of them are 51.1.0.1 even...I think it'll still be a while you can easily pick these up. I have literally put forth no more than 5% effort in finding these

Actually I've honestly had better luck ordering from staples than going into one. The one time I did the manager actually told me without me asking these were not the rootable ones. Lol mabye it's just where I live.

I like the ability of having a custom rom that is around the corner. The absolute imperative for me is SNES EMU and the Sega Masger System EMU that are charged on google play. and the Quicksupport teamviewer that only works on root for desktop sharing. I can always debug/tweak and help my friends/parents fix their firetv's. Rooted for me is very important.

If you pay for shipping. I can help you. I'm in Los Angeles. Send me a PM. There is a seller on ebay that may have rooted ones brand new but I suggest you message the person directly. I've purchased one for myself and once it arrives I can confirm what version it is. If you need I can stop by at bestbuy to see if they have rootable ones but chances are slim. just trying to help out.

It's a tad expensive, but I suggest buying them from the seller auction_discount. I've bought two of them, and he did a great job rooting them. He sets up XBMC, Stick Mount, Busybox, and other essential apps.

Id rather pay slightly more to get a rootable sealed one vs someone else doing it for me. I just got one from the person in the link above.
The earlier link that I had purchased was a bad one as it seems someone had updated the firmware and repackaged it. The box came opened with plastic.

ah, I agree. I'd rather have one that was rootable as well. I made the mistake of ordering one off of amazon, and it the software was way too new. I returned it and set out for another AFTV. I don't why I didn't pick up a rootable one instead of one that was already rooted.
Yesterday I went into the Navy Exchange on the base I work at, and saw they finally put out AFTV's. I whipped out my phone and checked all of the serial numbers on the ones on the shelf. BOOM! ALL of them were rootable. I picked up three of them right away. I'll probably go back and buy more soon. They all come with 51.1.0.1_user_510055620.

I'm in the same boat right now. It seems like the new updates are providing much of the same experience that rooted boxes originally had. Besides sixaxis and rbox's xposed module, I really don't utilize any of the advantages of a rooted unit over a stock one..
I'd just hate to kill a rooted box. It'd be like shooting a black rhino.

There are fundamental benefits to rooting and rBox has the latest one rooted. Its really simple to keep up with the rooted versions specially when you have the boot menu with recovery installed. For starters the latest version still does not allow ntfs mounts on usb. Then again remote quick support needs root for screen sharing remote as that is imperative if you build boxes for family and friends and if they need any software help.
I always land up helping my parents remotely. I have two sessions connected through teamviewer. one to the firetv and one on the pc and I'm golden. All tweaks updates and fixes work perfectly. except rom/firmware updates.

Tab S4 - Live Demo Unit

Hello guys,
I acquired Samsung galaxy Tab S4 SM-T830X for 300 euros and it is live demo unit and I have a question how I can remove "retail" mode where I can not install some apps as Antutu and CPU-Z?
Should I root it or what to do?

First off - Great to see you here - Noticed you had created a Tab S4 TWRP
Second - I agree with you. But if you are over here in the UK - CPW and O2 barely have any stock of these... Ive seen a couple of stores sell demo units in some capacities. Back in 2012 - When Comet went under - They were selling Demo units real cheap for IPADs etc because of administration.
If the user has picked up a demo unit lawfully (Notice how i say that ) Then it could be that a store was going to stock the device but due to delays in procuring etc (CPW had issues and pushed back release from Samsung by WEEKS!) they no longer plan to stock it.
Either way there are numerous reasons why they have a demo unit. Some legal some not so much... But either way while we dont know the full circumstances... We can assist if need be.
If the OP has stolen / obtained unlawfully then there is very little that can be done apart from to block the IMEI.
I wonder if the OP would like to tell us how he acquired said device,...

See that's the issue. These devices are not supposed to be released to the public, but destroyed.
I agree there are instances where demo devices end up in public hands, but not usually brand new recently released devices.
FRP is meant to protect unlawfully 'acquired' devices from being accessed and we get a lot of posts regarding that also.
I'd gladly assist anyone with a legitimate issue, but I feel uneasy with this sort of thing without actual proof of 'aquirement' especially considering posts related to unlawful practices are not allowed on XDA.
I'm not pointing fingers here, just voicing concern.
Thats very true with FRP. What should also be kept in mind here.
Samsung's retail mode is very different to the Retail Mode built into Developers Options.
Thing is - If the user does as my advice. Very quickly we will know if there is an issue with the device. It will ask for the original Google Account Assigned to the device ^_^
Lets see what happens
I removed retail software and flash new one and everything is working fine now... It was also some issues with charging but now everything is great. Like this forum!
Sorry for the inconvenience, but the guy sold me and I don't have idea how he got it... In my country there is no possibility to get it so soon after official release.
Can you share solution please
When I try to flash it says no flash interface found
I'd love to get a copy of the DeX switcher app that's included with the real Retail Mode.

Do I need to UnRoot my FTV 1 to trade it in ? Finally time for a full on upgrade...

So I think I should get a FTV Stick 4K Max. Mostly for the latest Bluetooth options available on them. I would like to trade in both my working Rooted Bootloader unlocked FireTV 1 devices for the 20% discount before the next 4K Max sale. But I am not sure if I should try the trade in process by sending in my TWRP rooted device as is (boots fine & used them as my current daily devices) or if anybody has yet to successfully unroot a TWRP flash FireTV 1 device ? Any guidance would be appreciated.
Also, how long do they give you to use the 20% discount ? Can you do two trades around the same time to get the discount on two new devices. Any info about how your trades went are appreciated.

Since the trade-in accepts also broken devices without a remote and other stuff, I guess it's too much of a hassle to do the unroot first...
Did the trade-in some time ago, also a bueller box, three bucks and 20% off for 'new' 4k devices (back then this was the cube and 4k-max). The whole process took ages, best is if you start the trade-in about 1,5 to 2 weeks infront of the sale...

No need to unroot before trading it in. Just make sure you wipe your data and you'll be good to go.
I don't know if you can have 2 active trade-ins at the same time, but I wouldn't risk it. I wouldn't do the second trade in until after you make the first purchase using the first trade in.
Some people get instant trade in credit, meaning you can use the discount immediately and mail the device after. There's no way to know if you'll get that until you fill out the trade in request.
Lastly, I'm expecting a new Cube to be released around October, if that changes your plans.

Good to know. Right now it shows they are still offering the same $3 + 20% off discount on a accepted working device. I plan to just send the device & remote. Do they require the power cord too ?? Amazon chat said two trade-in's should be fine around the same time. But not sure I trust them. I did copy over the chat incase I decide to do two close to the same time.
Maybe if the New Cube upped the storage to 32GB or above it might make a difference. I doubt most of the other specs will really get an increase. The RAM will probably still be @ 2MB. I actually own two FireTV 4K Sticks which I think are still on rootable FW. But they don't seem to be any hints of those ever getting the FireOS 7 update. Which is what I need to make my Bluetooth usage much simpler.
Does Amazon has Labor Day sales or ? Trying to do the trade in 3 weeks before the next possible sale.
Thanks for the quick reply...

Good to know. Thanks for the info. Do you remember if they asked for the power cord too or just the remote & box ??
It is still going for the same rate. $3 + 20% discount. Was told one can do more then one at time by Amazon chat but not sure I trust it. They where not sure how long they give you to use the % off credit. Wonder if there are labor day sales by Amazon or not.

There should be two questions about the condition and the parts at the trade-in page right after you've selected the fireTV model... I would select working condition = yes and accessories = no.

In my country it doesn't make any difference, all possible answers get the same discount, so I guess you can ship only the box in (like I did) and it will be fine.
I bet that the discount thing will not work (to buy two new fireTV devices), if you trade-in two old devices at the same time... maybe it's better to use two accounts.

Maybe if the New Cube upped the storage to 32GB or above it might make a difference. I doubt most of the other specs will really get an increase. The RAM will probably still be @ 2MB. I think the cube isn't worth the price.

Afaik the discount only works for 4 weeks or so, after the trade-in confirmation.
In my case the whole trade-in thing with shipping and confirmation took almost 2 weeks.
I guess 14 days infront a sale will be fine, if not you can annoy the support chat, they can give a discount too.
