Good day
I am trying to connect my Windows 10 PC to my Shield TV pro and am failing. I enabled network sharing in the Shield itself: saw the login credentials. I then went to my PC and saw the Shield icon under "Networks" but was only able to bring up properties of said Shield, no prompt for login credentials. My network is via ethernet. Also, what Windows services should be enabled? I have disabled services to decrease Windows bloat; so is there is an esoteric service that needs to be running to get my network to play nice?

I'm not certain about this but I think the problem is Windows 10 has SMB2 and the shield only supports SMB1, or something like that. With the latest Windows 10 update they no longer support Samba 1. You can read more about it on the GeForce Forums.

I'll look into it, thanks
This video shows how to disable smb1, but could also be used to enable it if already disabled.
I got kodi working with network shares after enabling the smb1 protocol.
As soon as you mentioned SMB, I realized that I might of disabled it in Windows Festures. When I get back at it tomorrow, I'm going to check.
Well, no luck on the SMB; enabled or disabled.
Might try this; dumb of me, but it happens sometimes. The same thing was going on with me and i could not figure out what the hell was going on, I remembered debugging in developer options, turned it off and everything showed back up on my network.
Use the IP address to access the server. I was having the same problem.
For example, my Shield's IP address is 192.168.1.242, as shown in the 'Storage & reset' page when I enable 'Over local network' storage access. Take note of the Username and Password as well.
Open file explorer (Win Key + E) and in the address bar type \\192.168.1.242 or whatever your Shield IP address is. You will then be asked for credentials to access the Shield.
Lastly you can may that storage as a network drive for easy access, when your at 'This pc', formerly 'My Computer' go to Computer>Map network drive and do the same thing.

vnc: let you access your computer remotely, you can see your windows and control your pc.
vpn is virtual private network: you can access your network, work or home , as if your connected physically. so you can get benefit of what is provided in the internal network. like interanet website, shared files ,, etc...

I know, I know. I should know this. But for the life of me, I cannot figure it out. I'm trying to use Gmote with my evo, so I can stream music, vid etc. I installed it on my phone, and on my laptop. I have a home network set up, the only access to the net that I have right now is through Cricket Broadband. It is WEEAK. When I open Gmote on my laptop, it just gives me the message saying that Im not connected to a network. How to I get it to see it, or do I need a router or somethin?

I have Gmote set up and all you need is to have your laptop hooked up to your wifi and have your phone also hooked up to the same wifi and make sure you have set the password on your laptop the same as for your phone. SOmetimes you will get a windows firewall notification on your computer so make sure you click on 'allow'.
Well cricket broadband doesnt run through wifi, so I have to make a seprate network. for some reason my phone wont see the network at all.
I am not sure if Windows can set up a domain to create an independent network, this is usually done through a router. Though I don't see why you couldn't set up a VPN and associate the devices within that. There is also the option of setting up a virtual machine on your laptop and running that as a router through the virtual nic's created by it.
Easiest would probably be the VPN. Just Google setting up a VPN in Vista.

Seems like I just don't have the stuff to do this. I have to use a Publicvpn account and they charge you by the minute.
The error i get from Gmote on my computer is this:
Unable to join the multicast socket. Is the computer connected to a network? Exiting Gmote.
I can't even get it to start. I am connected to the internet via Cricket broadband USB modem. What am I missing?
Yeah, that is an issue, can you set up a virtual machine to act as your server? Without a router makes all of this very tough.

So ok I've got a router and I have forwarded the port correctly (at least the program says that I did) and VNC server is working fine. But I can't access my comp... What can be the problem? I use external VNC server with my networks ip
(192.168...) as the embedded VNC server aint working (It says that I could not connect to VNC server ). Please guys answer me as Im going to kill somebody
Did you enable remote desktop connection setting and add users for the remote desktop connection on you computer.
also you need a dynamic IP address if you are going to remote desktop connection away from home.
Yes I have dynamic IP but I didnt get the first part.
if you got Win7 or Vista. you need to have the professional version of the operating system.
First you need to go to system property. you can go to Control Panel >> System.
then you will see an option for "remote setting" on the top left hand side of the page.
Select the option Allow connections from computer running any version of remote desktop"
Click on the select user button to add your user account for remote desktop connections.
Enable Remote Desktop connection in your Windows Firewall setting as well as your anti Virus Software firewall setting and finally your router firewall settings.
is there a app for android that i can use to access files on my pc - pictures and video for example, through wifi or the data plan on the phone, and if so, can it be done while pc is turned off? (i.e. when im at work can i then acess files on the pc?)
Thanks
If you set up Dropbox correctly then yes. Otherwise you'd need your PC on to access it remotely.
if you turn your pc off then drop box is your best bet. if you leave it then you can install an ftp or vnc server on the pc and use an ftp or vnc client on the phone. i use ftp to transfer thing top my phone from pc over wifi a lot. android vnc is good
Download from market teamviewer ,for me is the best choice.
I use ConnectBot to connect to my desktop at home; course, the computer has to be turned on first but that's easy too - wake-on-lan on the computer, activated through the home router admin page.
This is fine for geeky Linux connections as it's over SSH...

Hiya,
Ubuntu Forums
That's the instructions I followed to enable WoL for my computer; I've got a Draytek router at home and this has a WoL feature that can send the relevant packets to the computer inside the network.
Draytek Router FAQ
However, if you don't have this function on your router, you could always use an app on your phone to do it:
Wol Wake on Lan Wan (Android Market)
...course, you might need to configure your router to forward on the relevant port for this to work...
I have the following phone & setup:
Verizon Stock DINC - Android 2.2 - No Root
For the life of me I can't get my VPN Service to work on my phone. I use vpn.ipredator.se as my VPN provider. I can set everything up & connect to the VPN server. But when I try to browse regular internet pages it takes forever & doesn't work. I've tried adding a few different DNS servers, but nothing.
Do I need root permissions or a certain program to actually get VPN to work? Is there an alternative VPN service that you have successfully used on an unrooted DINC?
android vpn 2.2
Please note that these instructions are for the "HTC Desire" other Smartphone models may vary slightly.
From the Home screen, press the menu button
Select the options in the record again
Select Wireless and Networking
Select the VPN configuration
Select Add VPN
Select Add to PPTP VPN
Click on the name of VPN and describe it as "VPN" and click OK.
Click "Set the VPN server" enter the server name or IP address of the VPN server, for example, vpn.server.com
Make sure the "Enable encryption" is checked.
Then press the Back button to return to the display settings "VPN"
Find you’re VPN, you just created in the list, then press and hold, a new menu appears
The new menu will be an option "Connect to the network to" use this.
If you have not set up a VPN before you will be asked to create a passphrase of storing credentials. If you have a memory set credentials before just enter your password and then click OK.
Now a new screen will display the Connect "to <network name here> "Enter username and password for your VPN connection, then click" Connect”
You are now back in "VPN Settings" screen, you will notice that under his name will be displayed VPN "connection" after a few seconds this should change to "Connected"
I can enter all my details & even connect to my VPN. When I connect it doesn't let me browse sites. It's connected, but not working.
On another note I was researching VPN's. Seems that some work with Mobile Phones & others don't. Tonight I'm going to try HideMyAss and see if it allows me to browse the web on my phone.
Verizon Stock DINC - Android 2.2
Eken M001 Tablet - Android 2.0
Seems I fixed it by using HideMyAss as my vpn provider. Nice! Especially since the new ISP sleuthing rules have been approved.
