Screen on time - Moto Z Play Real Life Review

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Moto Z Play before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

We all know that this is the battery beast so 5 stars only!

Battery life is one of the best features of this phone.

My record SoT is 12h+, but 70% of this were movies (watched via VLan). Typical results are around 8h+ SoT on the span of 5 days usage (with Incipio offGRID).

battery at its best
Really guys!!! so glad that i got this phone, The Z Play is soo awesome in the battery performance department, use two sim cards and do alot of travelling, so the cellular reception is very inconsistent which is one of the biggest battery drainage factors, am always connected to the internet ,location high accuracy, access for almost all the app that need location, less videos, listen to alot of music while on the go ,i get around 6hrs of SOT from heavy use and around 7-8-9(rare) sot with average to mild usage.
PS: so think about the SOT i'd be getting if am on a single sim

Are you on 7.1.1 Nougat? My battery life is mediocre ever since. Even after a factory reset.

Yes , on 7.1.1 . After the update VoLTE symbol has changed to just 4G symbol.

I'd encourage you to just stick with 7.0 nougat. No need to go higher in my opinion. I went from 7.1.1 to 7.0 back to MM than back to nougat 7.0. Out of all three I believe nougat 7.0 is the most stables and best for battery life. I am rooted and using greenify.

Becareful when downgrading my friend. If you have a certain bootloader updated and you revert back to stock it can hard brick your mzp. I'd advise you to just flash custom roms rather than actually downgrading. Look into flashallthetime's 7.0 deodexed rom. I've hand no problems with this rom.

First day testing an almost new Zplay, from 100% to 65% after 13 hours: 6 hours of screen with brightness at 40%, WiFi all the time, good signal, facebook, messenger, WhatsApp, dime vídeos on youTube AND chrome, Will post screenshots later, this phone Is a beast.

Full brightness, BT, Location on High Accuracy and I easily get 6 hours (as many as 8) every day. Amazing battery.

3days standby (including 15hrs of SOT)

I used to get 3 days of battery life on my MZP with Marshmallow @ Stock ROM with lots of mods. Now I get 2 days of battery with Nougat @ LineageOS.
Proof of 3-day battery life - https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/how-3-day-battery-life-15-hours-screen-t3639343/
My Mods -
1.) I used these apps as replacements for stock/popular apps: http://www.haqx.org/2015/06/best-android-apps-alternatives.html
2.) I employed these techniques in a personal combination comfortable to me: http://www.haqx.org/2016/03/50-ways-to-increase-battery-life-of-any-android-device.html

6-9 hours of SoT. I am an extremely heavy user with brightness usually on 10% to 60% + adaptive. I use Snapchat a lot, which uses much of the battery, plus youtube, chrome, whatsapp and vlc mainly. Thinking of rooting it so I could use a dark theme to squeeze more juice out of it.

OFF topic ... but:
You can downgrade if you have:
1. Unlocked BL
2. RSD Lite
3. Brains and Google )))
P.S. Just unlock bl and flash FW with RSD lite without few lines in .xml
You must delete this line form flashfile.xml :
Code:
<step operation="getvar" var="max-sparse-size"/>
<step operation="oem" var="fb_mode_set"/>
<step MD5="89a09a1c2a08c3c4bd62e1a6dfc4c489" filename="gpt.bin" operation="flash" partition="partition"/>
<step MD5="7c4c6c1a2e2f91739827df651309f165" filename="bootloader.img" operation="flash" partition="bootloader"/>
Or just flash 6.0.1 with TWRP )))))
P.P.S Don`t try to downgrade with RSD if you have 8.0 soak test - you`ll lost IMEI and one way to fix it - go back to 8.0 and downgrade to 7.x or 6.0.1 with TWRP

Horrible Battery Life on Nougat

So Just to announce where I am coming from, I am a Sony fan for the past 4 years, Had the Z2 and was totally blown away by the battery life it offered. Then I got the Z5P and even though the battery performance was nowhere near the Z2 I still got through an entire day with it without issues so I was happy.
Then came the Nougat update and all hell broke loose. I am literally getting just 6 hrs of battery life since the update. And even when it is idle it still drains battery like atleast 2 percent every hour.
Also the charging is very slow. I have a quick charger that used to take the battery life from 0 to 20 in atleast 10 - 15 mins. But now it actually drains the battery if I am using the phone while charging. And yes I have switched off the battery optimization option.
Any help will be appreciated even if it is just a confirmation that I am not the only one having this issue, which will at least let me know that it is not just my phone.
There must be some process with corrupted data after de update which is constantly executing something. I recommend you to do a full wipe, factory reset

Oh did not know this could happen. Will definitely try doing a full wipe and see how things go! Thanks a lot!
I never fully trust OTA updates, because it keeps all the applications data and some special case of your current configuration maybe is not "converted" to the new version and causes the programs to behave weird. Have you looked at the battery usage? Maybe you find the process which a huge % of battery eaten, and just wiping that app data is enough

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I looked at the battery usage stats and no specific app is draining more than 2 percent of the battery over a charge. The only things that have taken most out of the battery are 1. The Screen On Time which is to expected and 2. The Idle Phone which takes around 15% consistently in every charge.

after updating to .372 , i learned from internet that this build has battery draining issues. ( i never faced any )
after updating to .376. , the phone is as steady stable as my other xperias (btw z5p is my 6th xperia )
now there is however a catch.
1. if you updated on OTA , this means the update of 1.2gb via ota only replaced certain files from .305 to make it .372 build (android 6 to 7) --- such OTA updates USUALLY ends up having problems (in general) with battery draining issues. Such problems i personally faced during updating from honeycomb to ics. - in short whenever update is available; always install FRESH
2. if your bootloader is locked then use xperia companion to install fresh after wiping all data. (makebackups)
3. if your phone is not rooted then try disabling all un necessary apps under Apps section.
----
Trivia
You cannot compare Z5p with predecessors like Z3/Z2/Z1 and Z since
1. they were always smaller in screen size / resolution and were not 4k
2. They stops at Android 5 / 6 as their last builds and battery life was awesome w.r.t consumption

however some of friends on XDA agrees that .305 (android 6.0.1) (came out dec2016) is the BEST build ever for z5p. addressed all battery issues and it was the final build for z5p on android 6.0.1
even i am thinking to degrade my phone due to ram consumption of N is very high!
this is why xzp has 4gb ram!
I need to know. If I updated my phone to .376 and it's having this lack of battery life, DO I HAVE TO SELL IT OR DISPOSE OF IT BECAUSE IT'S LITERALLY A LOST CAUSE NOW? (P.S. I immediately did a factory reset after the Nougat install completed.)
Because apparently if you updated to this build, then returned to the last Marshmallow build, THE PROBLEM IS NOT FIXED, and reloading nougat will only make things worse. And if you updated to .378, it not only does this not get fixed, it breaks your headphone jack to boot.
Please help. I am freaking out about this battery life. I lost 60 PERCENT IN 6 HOURS OF BASICALLY PODCASTS. ?

Well, after all my trials I flashed MM back and everything is back to normal. The issue is with 7 so not sure what happened to your handset
EDIT: Re-upgraded once again= battery 8 hour life. Go into About Phone, Status and disable battery optimization. The handset reboots and incredibly this morning it was like the old days .

Maybe I'll try that. The best I was able to do was 21 hours with one bar LTE, 6 hour's sleep, and 3h40m screen on time with several hour's worth of Pocket Casts.
i confirm that on build .33 i lost my battery even on stamina mode one percent every 10 minuets over using wifi , it just keeps the battery when device is screen off -_- its horrible i didnt have this kind of problem with .253 and im wondering revert back to MM

Battery Life on OOS 5

Just wanted to start a central thread for people to share SoT's and other battery-life-related info for the new OOS 5 build, and the other Oreo builds that may eventually follow, OnePlus willing.
I'm just waiting to see how battery life turns out, and how stable the build is, before upgrading. I figured many others would be too, so any of you brave first responders who want to fill us in would be very appreciated!
Useful info to include:
*Screen-on time (ideally with a screenshot of app usage)
*Average standby drain per hour
*Rough difference between standby drain when on WiFi/LTE (signal quality is the biggest decider here, so if you have an idea how good of a signal you may have been getting, please include that too)
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to let us know! (Remember to click the thanks button for those who help us out!)
So far so good. Pretty much the same as nougat.
i lost 40 % in around 1 hour SOT. that's very bad...
Very good, better than nougat
Hi, maybe a survey can be usefull ? Like "better than nougat" or not
After selecting location mode to GPS only, my idle drain with Oreo open beta is really low. I usually have 80% battery left when I go to bed. The other day I somehow disabled wifi and still had 80% left, so cellular battery usage is minimal.
Way better battery life than nougat.

There isn't a lot you can do about google play services and android system wakelocks, that's just Google spying on you and selling information about you. Limiting those almost always breaks something, they build their internal services confusingly on purpose because spying on you and selling that information is their core business model. You just have to do trial and error and see what works in your use case.

Is the LeEco le pro 3 Elite worth it in 2018?

Hi,
as the title suggests this smartphone is currently my top pick, i have a tight budget (120 euros/140 dollars); and the Le pro 3 sits comfortably at 116 euros shipped.
Would you recommend it? I have zero experience with modding but i'd like to learn; are the chanches of hard bricking it (x722) high? I would not be able to replace it for while.
Thanks!
At this price you can't get any better.
A few phones at this range might have a bet camera and the official support is almost non-existent, but it's beautiful, well-constructed, has good battery, a good community and it's super fast and smooth. Is runs everything without lags and the processor is equivalent with the ones of iPhone 6s Plus and Samsung Galaxy S7, 300€/400€ phones.
There are currently 13 Oreo ROMS for it and will surely be more, P included.
As long as you flash files compatible with x722, you will not brick it.
Normally, it costs 150€, so run for it. NOW!
P.S. I think you posted in the wrong place, maybe you can ask a moderator to move the topic.

My bad, i thought this was the right section, sorry.
It still worth it AS A FLAGSHIP.
why should be worth? you have a "OnePlus3" inside as hardware.
The right place would have been the questions and answers section.
Just make sure you use the ROMs for the x722 some are universal some are not if you stick with the le pro 3 elite x722 development section you'll be pretty safe as long as you're careful and read everything in the first post you should be OK just make sure and do a full backup in twrp and copy it to your PC in case of problems. If your unsure about something don't do it till you're certain you understand the guide. Good luck
Yes and no.
If you want a phone that just works then get something else. Yeah, the Le Pro 3 has better looks and internals than other phones but the software is never perfect.
Currently all Oreo Roms drain the battery pretty fast, battery life is still good but not outstanding anymore. Also there are always some other minor issues like a wonky signal, app crashes as so forth.
The Redmi Note 4 or Mi A1 are the obvious other choice. You're getting a more "stable" package but the phones don't feel as premium, the RN4 also has worse camera.

Ah ... bullcrap. What does it mean "Oreo..drain the battery pretty fast"?
In technical terms, I charge the battery in the range 20-85%, and this delta of 65% = 2,645 mAh.
That charge lasts me a week (my Nokia E71 would not last that long).
Standby discharge + some usage = avg. 0.5%/hr (20mA/hr), airplane mode overnite = 0.1%/hr (4 mA/hr)
Maybe A1 with Nougat lasts longer with smaller battery, than X72x with Oreo...
And the RN4? To beg the commies for letting me to unlock my phone?
Really?
At this moment, the X722s (X720s long gone) are disappearing from the [Chinese] warehouses, ergo the price went over $200,
but if one doesn't have to pay any duties/taxes ... it is still a bargain for this 2 years old phone. https://tinyurl.com/ydamcw9y

Don't worry, the phone is fine. The battery still lasts quite long but I haven't gotten 9h screen on time on any Oreo ROM anymore. Things are constantly improving, you just need to spend a little time to reading the forums and flashing a new ROM now and then.

Latest aicp, using blackscreen 5.1r2 oc (latest) (and after, in settings you can set to battery/balanced/performance profiles, tweak with lspeed and than with kernel Adiutor... I tweaked my phone for maximum performance (+ battery) that's why i have only 6h hard/demanding game session)

Blackscreen is always present by default I have AICP.
Anyway, you can use almost at any rom.

Oc kernel is not included. You can find it on dev sections.

I've recently fallen in love with xtended. Using it with the stock kernel, no games, only some light xda browsing, telegram and some YouTube. I easily get 11-12 hours SoT. You can give it a try.

I've been using AOSiP and have not looked back. its great on battery and buttery smooth.
Or as the other guy said, MSM is really good too

I'd come back with an edit for MSM tho. Yeah, it's nice and i guess SoT is very good, but idle is... Lost 6% in 9 hours first time, then 3% in 5 hours. Even with my deep sleep tweaks and nothing turned on. That's a big no-no for me. So like you said, AOSiP is a really really good choice (IMO at least).
I'll start with the aosip, used it on my oneplus 5t liked it

No, you're fine, there's no firmware in AOSiP.

No, no need for Greenify since i just don't use social media crap apps. Those are battery drainers. I do, tho', tweak the doze settings. Also, i use a different brightness app since the android's one gives too much brightness all the time and i don't really like to adjust it every time i unlock the phone. And the kernel is tweaked a bit, since i don't game much on my phone.

Basically its not applyable to most users. So your screenshot with sot time is very misleading without these details. If you underclock miui, dont use social apps, dont game, and lower your brightness, im sure you'll get something like 14-15h SOT. Because i often get around 10h SOT with miui, without modifying anything, just using phone as it came. And i do use social apps and enjoy an occasional game

I do play games, just not heavy ones. And the brightness is just a little bit lower, at most 10%,the kernel is not underclocked, it's just tweaked so it doesn't jump to high freq for just tapping on the screen. And yeah, social apps do play a big role in that, but only in deepsleep. For SoT, it's the same, I don't use social ones, but I use 9gag,which is known to drain battery, or telegram or WhatsApp so it's basically the same. But everyone's usage will be different. I just recommended a ROM and kernel, I didn't say it's the best or that people will get the same results as me.

Mi6 really slow after upgrade to 9.5.9 Beta

Hello,
a few days ago my Mi6 (4GB/64GB) upgraded to Pie (9.5.9 Beta) by OTA.
After that, the phone isnt smooth as in the past.
Sometimes starting apps from links while browsing - like ebay or amazon- fails.
Phone take little brakes.
Soundstreaming to a Bluetooth Soundbox is horrible, many little stops.
Does anyone has the same experience or issues after upgrading?
Best regards Christian
I always have this rule, if i upgrading. Example: from Android 8.0 to 9.0, then i doing full wipe, but older system leaves so many trash in system files.
I install 9.5.9 on my Mi6 128GB with MiFlash and dont have any problems, very stable rom, good battery performance.

Thanks mate. I will think about doing a full wipe. The battery performance is also not the best. Its not worse , but battery drain in oreo was much better.
