Google Nexus 5X LG-H791 Bootstuck - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I got an issue last night with my Nexus 5X, he suddenly stopped without the possibility of restarting it.
The battery was 80% full and i never installed any rom on the phone.
It's not a bootloop because when i press power, google screen appears for 5-10 seconds then the phone shutdown again.
I tried to press power + volume -, but no option in the menu works.
I don't know what to do but to get in contact with the seller to make the warranty works, i get pissed for all the data on it :'(
Sorry for my bad english, it's not my mother tongue :crying:

I am having the same issue as you, I even managed to flash the stock 7.1.2 and it worked for 10 minutes then it froze and went back to not working at all.
I have no idea how to fix this and I am out of warranty.

i got issue 15 minutes ago too, dont know why it stopped.
i suffing web and suddenly it turn off screen.
i do all thing i can but nothing work:crying::crying:
my devices is Google nexus LG H790

Mine died on me a couple months ago in this same way. I do believe this is the bootloop or hardware failure that is known for the LG phones at the time. The V10, G4 and Nexus 5X have all been effected by it. When it happened I did some searching online and saw a video of someone putting it in the freezer for a short time to cool the motherboard and it turned on for a limited time. It was long enough for me to back up the stuff I need before it shut off again. I was also able to wipe and factory reset it another time the same way. It's been harder to get it to turn on lately. A better fix I saw (although temporary as well) was taking the motherboard out and using a heat gun to reconnect the solder. That is what I believe the issue is. But I haven't gone that route.

oh my.. it happened to me yesterday, now i see this... i flashed a new recovery and nothing, it passes the google screen to black.
Ill try the freezer thing to see what happens

Hello,
Thank you all for your answers & testimony ^^ , how long did you put it in the freezer?
This manipulation can kill the warranty ?

i had it like 20 miutes and it worked a few minutes, now im trying longer...
as for the warranty, i dont think it has anything to do... its like when u go to the mountains or if u live i a really cold country

This is how my phone acted before it eventually boot looped. Letting it sit in the freezer for a while would get it to go into the recovery menu, but it would not enter recovery or boot. The only way I got it to actually boot was using a hair dryer on the motherboard. But it immediately froze once unlocked. It also bootlooped. I got it to boot for a long period only by using a heat gun on the motherboard. Second time around I used a higher setting and it acted normal for 9 hours. But then it rebooted on its own and eventually bootlooped again.
A video In Spanish, but good walk through and you can just follow the video with subtitles.

I only put it in there for maybe 5 to 10 minutes. The longer it's in there the more condensation builds up on it. This is the video I watched that gave me the idea. He talks about it in the beginning. So I just tried it.

EDIT: I see the post above me has the same video.

What happens when you do a factory reset? Does it load into CWM?
you can access download mode so you can unbrick your phone
I think its not a hardware problem because you can see the lg logo
If you can access cwm menu , wipe user data and cash , then flash hono stock ics.
Then if the phone startup was successful check the hardware parts via hidden menu in stock roms.

The phone goes into grey screen and wont start up to set the account but if i revome the batter for a few min i can start it back up and go through the google account set up. But after a while if someone called me in the phone i cant hear what they are saying and they can hear me, if i restart is grey screen of death again. :crying::crying::crying::crying:
Thank you drumist for looking into this.
No i was not able to get into CWM. I have to do the unbricking guide to ICS was not able to go to GB as i cant root it goes into grey screen after the phone restarts while rooting causing the root to loose connection with the phone.
Please help.
I have the same problem. This is a problem in the system board. When pressed at a certain point the phone can turn on. I think the problem is contact a BGA chip

Guys i took real good care of my phone it never fell down from my hand nor does it have a scratch on it. never over did the flashing part as well, my advice is stick with the stock ICS. My Nitro is game over i bough a new Samsung s3. just a word of advice dont over do your beta flashing. :crying:

happyneser how did u resolve the issue.
Please advice i tried every thing in the book and did not pull though.
You need to check the power IC, and make reballing
I was treated to the service (good repair workshop), they said that one of chips was soldered askew.
I think it one of this - Qualcomm PM8901, PM8058 and PM8?7? I do not know exactly.

Dear Friend,
i believe i am still right the BSOD now a days Laptop are common mostly HP, its Due to the VGA chip being BGA(ball grid array) they are chips with small balls with soldering underneath them used for comm between the chip and the Bord. but went to chip overheats it melts the solder underneath and when it cools back down the solder get solid it a different area(we moving the phone like taking out of pocket or so) which causes lack of communication between chip and board(when they are back solid) it causes BSOD. I believe the Graphic chip in NITRO HD is using the BGA tech(It makes sense) so if our phone overheats too much the chances of De-aligning the solder in the chip is high cousin BSOD. We all know CM10 at the early stages caused overheating while in black screen coursing huge power drain in battery(we have stigmatic data with the help of battery analyst app).
So summer Nitro HD = BGA , CM10= overheating, Overheating=Bad for BGA(Causes BSOD) so overheating Nitro HD causes BSOD there u have it. i case if the phone really overheats while its in your pocket of in a uneven place and the solder goes out of place then you are in trouble like me.
Solution= Re balling or heat gun(temporary) Can FIX it.
So it's pm8028 near mdm9200
I got the same problem last weekend. I woke up and found the screen on and no sound from alarm clock. I checked and the phone got no sound at all.
I restarted the phone and got the gray screen. Late at the day the phone boot again but after another reboot it got the gray screen and never recovered.
I use CM10.1 and wind kernel with no overclock.
Too bad I didn't find any shop that reball the chips so my phone is dead
I got a i9305 today to replace it.
cn you fix the re-ball?

Make sure the phone is fully charged before you try to boot it up, if it is fading out after the logo splash screen it either sounds like a dead battery or a badly flashed rom. You can enter into recovery by holding the volume down and pressing and holding the power button till you get prompted to wipe the phone.
I have had a couple of grey screens (or "black" screens) which I was able to recover from, simply by making sure the phone was powered off, then fully charging the battery for 4 hours, then booting into recovery and flashing a different ROM
nz
ok... will attempt to reload
will try and download and attempt .....
best and easiest place to get files??

Faulty battery that wasn't faulty for 8 months?

Okay I recently wrote a thread about the random restrarts on my g3 that happened 10 times a day, but the things have gone too far. As i was having random restarts when I monstly use the camera but not only for about 5 days and some of those restarts were also shutdowns now the problem is more serious. Today i was intending to take a picture of something and as usual the phone restarted but STUCK on the startup boot "picture" that says that lifes good and then goes black screen and startup picture and black screen and so on. I wasn't able to use the phone. I pulled out the battery and tried again but it didn't worked. So as I went home i plugged the phone ot the charger and when i powered it on it started normally and tried to take pictures and there weren't any problems. So I think that this is the battery that is making this **** to happen. I highly doubt that this is software problem but from my quick examination i think that the problem is from the battery . What do You think. Tommorow i will go to my carrier and "ll try to explain them about this. But they are usually jerks who don't know anything about phones. They only know how to get your money.Anyways. Yes.

Are you rooted? Did you flash anything? Did you edit any system files? Looks exactly like when I bricked my phone. There is a fix. Check out this thread and the links in it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/help/lg-g3-unbricking-steps-clarification-t3119844
Also can you access download mode or recovery. You might want to try them first.
No I havent rooted it or made any system modifications. This problem occurs only when my phone isnt charging. When iits charging even at 100% there isnt any problem
I've gone to my stupid carriers office and explained everything but they do not want to give me a new battery unless they bring the phone to the other end of the country for repair. This is extremely stupid. Now I can't use my phone because its totally "bricked". I xan only use it with my original dc charger if i unplug it the phone shuts off. Yesterday Ive decided to make a factory reset, but i wanted to copy my internal storage to my pc, but the phone won't turn on when its plugged to the pc. I don't know what the **** is happening with this 500 piece of pancake.
well i have finally decided to do a factory reset but after the anticipation and thinking it is a software problem it isn't apparently. Maybe i will just send it to repair and hope that i wait less than 20 days for it to come back. And i hope that they don't figure out the problem and send a new phone but i think it is the battery that is the problem. Anyways the modern technologys are the most incredible thing and the most getting you pissed of one. You pay 500 dollars+ and expect something good and there you go .
So did you do factory reset or not?
Btw, getting phone to repair center is a good decision, they'll see what's wrong.
I have been happy with my G3, only "minor" thing I don't like is the horrible backspeaker (coming from HTC One m7)

My worst Nightmare ...Lg G4 DEAD ?

So its Saturday midnight and I m in my buddys house and we were talking and the same time i m on instagram and i scrall around ...when suddenly my G4 freezes and shuts down ...I say wtf and i just power it on (my battery was at around 42)...it starts to boot and suddenly begins to optimize apps ...okkkk i say let it finish ...when the optimization stops and its about to launch my homescreen suddenly blue screen and its powering off...I freaked out!!! i boot into recovery and wiped dalvik and cache...i reboot ....and starts again to optimize the apps ...i say ok everything is good then suddenly it dies again ....i say WTF !!! and i reboot into recovery to wipe everything and do a fresh intall of the Genisys 4.8 rom cause i did a dirty a couple days ago ...as soon as i wipe everything (i have sd and i keep everything there(roms gapps etc...))TWRP freezes and doens do anything after a while it dies again ...I reboot again into recovery to install the rom but when i swipe to flash it just freeze ..i retried it almost 10 times ...nothing it just not gonna do it ...as the time was passing i noticed that the duration between booting itno recovery and freezing was getting smaller and smaller ...so i left my buddys house to go home and flash the kdz (H81520i_00_0927) i put my phone into download mode i open lgup and i do the proper steps (choose the kdz ...closed the lgup ...and reopened it) so i start to refubrish my phone ...when the peosedure was about in 28-30 % my phone died ...I start cursing around ...i put it on the original charger to charge for an hour and a little more ...and i retry ...when the procedure was at 90%(when the phone starts to reboot) without any problems so far ...it starts to reboot but it never boot it just died again ...i pulled out the battery because it was the only way to make sure it was totally closed ...so i power it on and it passes the first lg logo power by android and the unlock bootloader stuff ..and it shows me the android robot with he's stomach working and suddenly it dies again....SO PLZ TELL ME WHATS WRONG WITH MY G4 ?
I want to add some information...
My model never had any bootloops
Its not from the production number with the famous problem
I have dig this particular problem to find if my device was one of them before i unlock the bootloader
For about 3 months i use to charge my g4 through a fast charge cable and though an OEM powerbank
Between a couple of reboots and throught the last time i tried to flash the KDZ my screen flicker the first time was random pixels and the last time it was horizontally the half ....
My first thought was that the battery died ...but when i saw the screen i wasn't sure...
The phone was bought 10 months ago normaly would have 2 months of warranty but with unlocked bootloader thats history ...
Dude, I believe you're having a battery or a hardware issue. Doesn't look like a bad rom installation or anything software related. I'd suggest you take it to LG Support.
Try to successfully pass the original KDZ prior going to LG Support...
i would say bootloop issue.
its the ILAPO issue bro. No more words.
Guys thank you so much for your replies ...I took it to a nearby tech shop that have services for smartphones and the found out that actually its a motherboard problem sometimes its working sometimes not ...we tried a new battery but it dint change anything ....Once again thank you for your replies

I think this is worse than the ILAPO.
I had the ILAPO and now i'm facing this same issue. The unique way to turn it on is putting it on the fridge 10 minutes but it takes 1 min to die again!

Nexus 5x shut off and won't turn on

If I posted this in the incorrect place or there is something related to my issue, I apologize in advance.
I've been searching here and all over the internet and no progress yet so I decided to make a new account here just to see if anyone can help me because I'm out of ideas right now.
This morning my Nexus 5x (Non-rooted Nougat) woke me up like every morning, after dismissing the alarm I left it on my bed and when I came back to grab it later I noticed it shut off.
Here are the facts and what I have tried so far:
- Battery level was almost full
- I tried to turn it on but nothing happened, not even the Google logo
- Connected it to power and no icons or any response at all
- Left it connected for like an hour and tried to get it into recovery mode
- I was able to get into fastboot mode a few times but after electing "start" or "recovery mode" the Google logo comes up and then shuts off again right after.
- Tried getting into recovery mode after leaving it charging for a while again but I couldn't even get into fastboot this time, no signs of life at all.
- Disconnected the battery for a few minutes and tried to get into fastboot mode again, this time it worked but same thing happened. (Google logo then shuts off)
- Tried connecting it to my PC but doesn't show up on Linux nor Windows, on Windows it makes the sound like I connected a peripheral but that's pretty much it.
- I have USB debugging enable but never accessed my stuff through usb connection because I have had this issue before where it is connected but it won't show up or it shows up but won't let me access the files even though the phone is unlocked.
At this point it just won't do anything and I ran out of ideas. I just want to at least recover some pictures and information I have in it that isn't backed up, if anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance
It sounds like you might have encountered the hardware bootloop issue. This is theorized to be caused by bad solder for the eMMC chip or bad eMMC chip. This was an acknowledge problem on a related model LG phone, but hasn't been acknowledged for N5x.
If you are under warranty, you should start the replacement process before it runs out.
If you want to try something that sounds crazy but has worked for some people, put the phone in the freezer for 15 minutes then see if it boots. If it does, quickly back up as much data as you can, then wipe the phone in preparation to RMA exchange.
Just boot to bootloader (fastboot) then unlock it and flash a factory image... u can find many guides to this operation on the XDA

Same here... cannot enter recovery mode, so flashed new rom stock rom.
The flashing was fine but it didn't help.
guys if u can get to the bootloader, sure it can be fixed.. everything is possible with the fastboot, u can fix any issue. if it's a hardware issue the bootloader wouldn't work as well.

I've had the same problem with my 5X, except my alarm didn't even go off! I woke up 15 minutes late to see the boot screen "enter your pattern to start Android". I entered my pattern and it looked like it was going to boot up but when I went back to it it was blank. Tried again, got to the Google loading dots and it switched off again and I haven't been able to power it up since. No bootloader, nothing. Tried all the troubleshooting steps on the Nexus Google Support pages (I did post a link but because I'm new it won't show, so just Google "Nexus Support") and nothing worked. I also knew the battery was fully charged because it had been on charge overnight and when I did get to the 'enter your pattern' screen, the battery icon in the notification bar was full.
I requested a call back from Google and nothing happened so I tried the chat and they said it sounded like a hardware issue and are sending me a replacement device within the next 3-5 working days. Good that they're replacing it. Bad that it happened on a device less than a year old and they only offered £10 Play Store credit by way of compensation, when I've had to spend £15+ on a PAYG sim card to use in my old phone in the meantime because the nano sim in my 5X was too small and I've spent over an hour and half this afternoon wasting my time with troubleshooting and waiting for a call back... Not really the customer service I expected from Google for what appears to be a hardware issue. If you bought the phone from Google, my advice would be to get in touch with Google Support and they should replace it under warranty.

I contacted Google and they didn't help me at all because my warranty expired last month, they literally just told me to put in a repair request at the LG repair webpage....this sucks
My experience exactly...
My wife's Nexus 5 exhibited the exact same symptoms this morning. It's been running perfectly for 20 months and today it died, and we're unable to even get into the bootloader screen or power on the phone.
Taking your advice, we put it in the freezer for 15 minutes and were able to perform a factory reset wiping all data from the phone. We are going to take advantage of Google's Christmas 2017 promotion and return the Nexus 5X and buy a Moto 4X. They require you perform a factory reset before returning the phone in order to receive a credit for the returned Nexus 5. Thank you so much for the help!

I've just posted this thread overlooking yours. I think this is becoming another common issue. Has the freezer trick worked with anybody else?
I am having the same issue described here. My Nexus 5x went into a Bootloop about one month ago, but I was able to get it working again by going into Recovery Mode. About 4 days ago it went into a constant Bootloop, just showing the Google screen, and I couldnt get back in to recovery mode. I ordered a new phone on Tuesday (Pixel 2) and as long as I am able to do a factory reset I should get a $150 credit when I send this phone back. So, in desperation, I took a chance on the 15 minute freezer trick, and it worked! I was able to get into recovery mode (power + volume down, select Recovery Mode, little dude on his back came up, pushed power + volume up once) and cleared the cache and applied the factory reset. Ridiculous that this phone only lasted 18 months, but if I get the $150 credit I will be happy.
Same problem here -- just froze for a few seconds, powered off, and won't turn back on. Not a boot loop issue as there is no response at all from any buttons. Swapping the mainboard from a working phone powered up without a problem, but obviously that's the other phone's emmc.
I tried the freezer thing and it sort of worked- LCD powered on for a couple seconds, but then shut back off again and even that only happened once. That's progress over the usual absolutely no response though... Anyone have insight into why the temperature would matter? something is overheating that this gives a bit of wiggle room since it starts much colder than usual? maybe a more complex analog electronic situation?
I would happily pull the flash chip off and put it in a emmc reader, but I think I'm out of luck because from what I've read the dm-crypt key is generated from some data stored in in the processor's trust zone thing. I know the "password" but if that's only part of what makes the key and the rest isn't on the flash chip I suppose there's no point in going that route.
I don't care about the hardware surviving; mostly just looking to recover my data. Anyone have suggestions? Hardware debugging direction? I'm willing to buy some electronics test equipment (within reason of course; not picking up a 10000USD rework station for some old photos and contact list...)

The only way to connect that buddy to PC is to get SoC (CPU) working, so theoretically you can go towards reballing the chip. But I guess it's not an easy thing for such a little chip. Also u will need kinda plate for balls, i think there are no common ones, so u can make it yourself if have a technical education.
Another way is to connect memory right to PC without a phone but with some connector. IDK if there are any available, but this looks much more simple. I actually got the same happened, and tried to heat the plate, but with particular success.

Here's the reader
https://www.amazon.com/ALLSOCKET-eMMC169-Programmer-Kingston-Interface/dp/B06Y55DKND/
But I assume the problem is I will not be able to generate the encryption key because part of it is in the processor.
If someone has tried this and it definitely works, I'll give it a go. Just don't want to buy the emmc reader and heat gun this chip off if it's certainly a waste of time.

I've seen a post of a guy who sent his motherboard to china and got reballed it and gained 4gb of ram. Can be wrong, but it was around $50 and a month of time.

Nexus 5x died with no warning

Been using my 5x for 18 months or so, standard Android 7.1, etc. Pulled it out of my pocket a couple hours ago and it is totally dead! Had about 75% battery when last used.
I'm unable to get any response out of it, no charging indicator, power + volume keys doesn't work. Just totally dead.
Any ideas? Will Google replace it for a fee? I'm on a trip for another few days and will really miss it -- hope I don't need it for something important.

Same happened to me while ago. But still no luck with this. To fix I believe I need access to boot menu which I couldn't
Update: For some reason, I was able to get into the initial screen that you get by holding power and volume down. However, none of the three options work from there. All I get is a Google logo for several second and return to darkness.

You can read about Nexus 5X bootloop on this forum. Its a hardware problem.

my nexus 5x is going to die . i opdate it too android 8 and work with telegram . then it turn off and is not turn on . after 1 day when press power key the notification light is turn on. i cant go to recovery or downloaD mod . please help me
Mine did this exact thing and it was the bootloop problem, though it didn't bootloop. It acted like yours did.
Your best hope if you're going on a trip soon, is try the method that turns off the big cores. If you don't have an unlocked bootloader, try putting it in the freezer or an ice bath, and maybe it'll boot long enough to unlock the bootloader. Mine would get into recovery using that method so I could wipe the cache and adb the OTA. It also tried to boot longer, but never would boot.
All the phones act differently and you may get lucky.
Mine never booted until I used a hairdryer on the motherboard. But it immediately froze after booting. Then actually did start bootlooping. Only using a heatgun got it to boot where I could pull my data off of it. But it died relatively quickly. Then I got it to act normal for 9 hours after using a heatgun at higher temp. After that I could heatgun it again and get it to boot, but it would very quickly die again. The fix that turns off the big cores was not out then, so I don't know if it would have fixed it.

I was on a trip when it happened, but miraculously survived without access to Google Maps, SMS, FB, etc. Returning home, I was very impressed with Google support. I put in for a callback on my home phone, received a call in less than a minute, and they are replacing my phone (with a refurb) free as a "warranty extension" (phone about 18 mos. old). So I should be back in business in a couple days. In the meantime, I'm finding it kinda liberating to not have to be carrying the phone around, remembering to put it on the charger, etc.

Yeah, they replaced mine at 14 or 15 months in. By then it was such an issue that the tech guy didn't even bother making me do all the troubleshooting steps before he said he was handing me off to the guy to set up the replacement.
Mine just did this to me. It's my second 5X and this time nearly 6 months elapsed before it died so I couldn't use the Amazon return process (my first one started bootlooping in less than 2 weeks).
Had the phone 100% charged, slipped it into my pocket, took it out during lunch and it refused to boot. Can't even get into recovery.
I'll put it into my freezer tonight to see if I can at least get it to boot long enough for me to retrieve a few photos that I hadn't backed up in the cloud.
I wonder if my frequent use of the phone as a car GPS contributed to this. My friend's 5X has not crapped out on him since he bought it in 2015...
Google Pixel, here I come!
Edit: Freezer worked, and in fact the phone is still alive, but I'm not cancelling my Pixel order regardless

1 hour. It works as usual. Hasn't died since I took it out, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
hey guys - I'm troubleshooting this device for a lady friend - this exact thing just happened to her haha she's running all stock everything, I was able to get to the default bootloader/choose recovery etc screen but when I selected recovery, like you all, it just bootlooped a couple times, then played the entire boot animation, then died again...
if I do this freezer thing, can the wug's toolkit aid me in flashing some custom stuff to make it a little easier to mess around with? i.e. put on kernel adiutor and turn off the big cores like someone mentioned?? anyone know the thread where I could root purely from bootloader screen + computer? the toolkit seems to require normal access to the OS to function, right?
thanks in advance

I believe you should be able to get the phone to stay alive long enough to do everything you mentioned, after a freezer treatment.
In my case, the phone has actually stayed alive continuously after the freezer treatment but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Same things happened to my phone...it was 50% charged and all of sudden... The phone went off...still trying to find out....
Just happened to me.
Phone died while in standby on my desk, black screen and no luck booting or anything. I was assuming the worst, it's been only 1 year since i bought it.
I dig out my screwdrivers kit, removed the back cover and disconnected the battery. After a few minutes i reconnected it and the phone was alive and kickin' again. No bootlop whatsoever.
Now it's working fine, i hope it keep doing that for long time. @machoman1337 yours is still fine or died again?
Thanks

I bought a Pixel so I haven't tested my 5X since my black-screen happened. It's still in my drawer.

Oh, I see. Thanks anyway.
I'll see for myself.
there's a nexus 5x extinction in progress
there we'll be no nexus 5x alive in a while
having nothing but rubbish in your hand after 2-3 years is not a pleasure and this is a shame for lg
