Audio quality - Xiaomi Mi 5s Questions & Answers

I'm getting this phone soon and I was wondering how was the audio quality? When you go on GSMarena's review there is a huge downfall in audio quality when using the earphone jack. The Mi5 has outstanding quality compared to it which makes no sense. Has there been any software updates that have changed it after the review has been made?

No, it's rather bad and it's hardware related so no hope here. I'm thinking of getting another phone just for this.

audio
A matter of taste. I can't say that the sound is so bad.

With mine there are huge distortions in the mids compared to my computer (with extra sound card) and Oneplus One. I can also not hear the difference between lossless and mp3 on the device, while on other devices I can.
If you don't have good equipment you probably won't notice that much, as it is still better than most cheap phones.

I owned a MI4C previously and I think Mi5S audio quality is inferior.

I strongly recommended this mod, if you need good sound quality https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/soundmod-ainur-audio-t3450516

That one does indeed help a bit, although it cannot completely compensate the hardware.

With hardware everything is fine, the problem with a bad software

try halogen rom sound quality is the best

Would you know what exactly is the reason it's worse? As far as I know the S820/821 DAC is really good. Is it possible that the amp is garbage then?

It ain't a matter of taste, the audio quality tests show there's massive distortion, huge noise levels and stereo crosstalk is absolute trash.

Can you give me a source for this? I've searched everywhere and all I see is complaints about the audio quality being terribad

I indeed suspect the amplifier, as it, aside from the distortions, doesn't sound very rich/full. The problems also become larger with higher volumes, especially with large headphones.

Just listen music with customs like RR, LOS, and compare it with MIUI

Just buy an LG device if you want a good sound, Xiaomi ain't good in this area

The Mi5 has fantastic sound quality that blows this phone outta the water. When I get the phone I'll compare the stock MIUI to Halogen which supposedly has an audio fix that brings back to what it should be.

So there really is a difference? I see halogenOS is suppose to have better quality. I hope it actually does

As I think: in MIUI there are some improvers, which on the contrary make the sound artificial, possibly because of Dirac

Speakers are not very loud...

Is it just me or are the new speakers much softer than the previous N7? It does sound much better with the Stereo setup instead of Mono, but the volume just seems low even at max volume. Maybe its just me...
The new Nexus 7 speakers are much louder for me than the old ones.

I am also in the same boat. Low Sound and I was wondering a way to check it.
Also, i tried listening to it by placing my ears on the speakers and I am not able to hear anything from the top speakers at all. The down seem to work fine.
So can you check and let me know which speakers are affected and also what are you software version or and using any custom rom?
I am on stock, Unrooted, locked and nothing changed from me till yet.
Mine is also not loud and I hear sound form both speakers . I just tested it against my phones and........galaxy s3, galaxy s2, galaxy note 2 are louder by alot.
Make sure you guys are testing with the right things, for example with music or podcasts mine are very loud and its great but Youtube can be sporadic because not every video is made well and the sound doesnt get through. If you are watching a professional channel then they should be great but some people dont do too well with the sound on youtube. Also netflix for me is very loud and clear and overall everything is much better than my original N7

my speakers work fine and loud. But i read somewhere that due to the angle of the speakers (almost rear facing), some people have complained about weak speakers.
I have sound mod increase by 50 percent for my gs3. Wonder if it would work with the nexus 7. Prolly not as 4.3 might have different files.

Audio Quality Through Headphones

What is the audio quality like through the headphone jack?
A good pair of headphones & Flac with both built in music player & Poweramp?
Is it as good as both the S5 & the M8 or is it better?
Ta
I think the quality is good. However some handsets have a problem with internal noise, i also had this issue but it kinda fixed itself after the first few days.

Yeah something like that. But i just read people having this issue made it go away by changing from dalvik to ART in settings. When i think about it (i also changed to ART) that was when my issue also was gone. So yeah apparently a software issue.

Do you use stock or a 3rd party music player?
GSM arena ran a bunch of tests and basically found that the G3 has the highest output quality of any Android device, up against the S5, M8, Find7, and Z2. It's not the loudest, but there will be mods for that.

I can tell you that it's the best mobile I've heard. I play Spotify @320 through Shure SE846's and sure it's not the absolute top notch but it's REALLY good. Like, I don't feel the need for an external Amp/DAC.

with poweramp and withour direct volume control, without any egalzer..nothing, the sound is simply amazing.
The M8, G3, Note 3, and S5 all had pretty good sound quality with headphones imo. I really couldn't say which is the best. They all sounded pretty good and comparable to each other. I still use my ear buds from the HTC Rezound. I don't care what anyone says but those were some good headphones for a free pair.

That would be EXACTLY why you can't tell any of them apart, LOL. It's like saying Blu-Ray and DVD look the exact same when you're watching them on your 13" CRT TV.
And no... the stock buds that come with a phone aren't good. They're terrible. Quite literally the only good things you can say is that they put sound in your ear and it's possible to buy worse ones at a 7/11.
Stock earphones from the HTC M7 and M8 are great for free headphones quite loud and good sound.
I have a pair of JVC extreme in earphones that I bought for £15 quid and they are loud, also have a pair of Dre Beat's Solo's and they sound good.
I'd say the stock volume for the rear facing speaker is very loud for a back firing speaker I was quite shocked at just how loud it was.
Headphone volume was on the low side though.
I used a guide in the dev thread to boost the auido volume of both speaker and headset and then used Viper4Android and WOW oh WOW.
Best sound I've had out of a phone.
I've owned alot aswell. Coming from the Nexus 5 the sound of the G3 blows it away.
I would 100% suggest rooting. Increasing the values as per the guide and getting Viper4Android installed

Anyone return phone due to poor HP audio?

I have to say that while my copy has been flawless, I can't say I like the HP output. It's at least two steps back from my old Samsung GNex. Volume is poor and simply the detail coming out of it, at least through my Audio-Technika IM70 IEMs, is also quite lacking. Not impressed at all.
Is anyone else thinking about returning/selling their phone due to poor HP output?
No ofcourse not there will be a tweak to make it sounds good
Verstuurd vanaf mijn LG-H815 met Tapatalk
I've not experienced anything like that. Like you I love my music and I am very happy with the quality coming from the handset. Although I always use poweramp.
I like the audio from this device.
I was replying to one guy at reddit before. He was curios about the sound on the G4 compared to HTC One M7. Since I got both, and I do listen to music a lot, I wrote my impression.
"I switched from M7 to G4, and I was worried about the sound in headphones also. Even though I think they both perform really good, but I will give my M7 a slight edge here. I was listening to both right now, and it feels that G4 got more highs, bass is not as punchy as M7, and M7 sounds more tight. It's really hard to say which sounds better, matter of taste, but I find M7 as a better sound quality device, even though the sound is a bit dull comparing to G4. The volume levels are higher in M7, but the volumes G4 produces are more than enough for me.
Both devices were tested with stock players, without any EQ tweaks, Beats Audio turned off of course. Music genre: electronic. Earphones: Shure SE425."
But I won't return this device, only because I don't like the sound as much as I do on M7. G4 is superb phone in overall, and the sound is not bad at all, it's just different.
Versus my M7 it doesnt compare. But with that being said my M7 had an audiomod on it which revamped the output. There really isn't any phone(stock) that I could find that'll compare to it.
Am I going to return it? Nope. I'll wait for root and get another mod and call it a day
The headphone quality is indeed poor. Also on my unit, the device won’t even recognize the headphone input unless the jack is pressed at a certain angle. Tested with multiple pairs of headphones.
The headphone situation is my only negative mark for this phone. Everything else about it meets or exceeds expectations.

The headphones quality by all means isn't poor whatsoever. Tested and compared to iPhone 6,5, Samsung s6 n4 and 2014 edition tablet. Lg g4 by far is the very best. I'm a sound engineer and was blown away from the sound of this device. It's very well balanced with extension on the highs. The bass of course isn't as punchy but it's just right amount of bass extension so it doesn't overpower the mids. Yes volume output for hp isn't so great. Lg g2,3,4 is the one phone that has a DAC inside for sound quality and support natively 192/24bit audio

Sounds a lot better than my Nexus 6. I had to mess with the equalizer to get a decent sound that wasn't muffled/"warm" but not with the G4.
Using PowerAmp and ATH-M50x.
It also gets plenty loud for me. I've never had to turn the volume to max.
If it doesn't get loud enough for you, get some headphones/iems that isolate better, are within proper impedance range for a mobile device or get an amp or get your hearing checked.
I don't understand what you all mean when you say you apply an audio mod to make things sound better. What does this "mod" actually do? I am very skeptical because mods can only modify the software at that point, the hardware (which controls the quality) is what it is.
I sweat by Viper4Android. Its crazy all the things it can do. The convolver in particular has helped elevate the sound. Not being able to install it has been my biggest disappointment with the g4

Dac quality compared to Axon 7?

Hey guys, the only factor that is making me choose the Axon 7 over the OP3 is the dedicated DAC. I was wondering if you guys would be able to tell me if the sound difference would be a deal breaker over the OP3 whilst using headphones? If the OP3 is almost as good as the Axon 7, might as well go for the OP3. Any help appreciated, thanks.

Hi,
If you are really wanting to get good sound quality on OP3, I suggest that you root and install an audio mod on top of a custom ROM like RR or CM.
It really does improve the device's sound quality.

I think you won't be disappointed with the audio output.
http://pocketnow.com/2016/06/27/oneplus-3-review#toc-7
Initial anecdotal impressions of the OP3 were very positive. This phone has a clean, punchy, balanced output from the headphone jack, and this amp is more powerful than the hardware found on the Galaxy S7 or LG G5.
Running this phone through some analyzer tools, it handily beat those two flagships, and trailed directly behind some of our absolute favorite music phones like the HTC 10 and LG V10, just nipping at the heels of the iPhone 6S. This was shocking in the best way possible. The OnePlus 3 sounds like a very good option for the audiophile on a budget.
The bottom firing speaker is no slouch either. Not the loudest we’ve tested for alerts and notifications, but providing detailed and crisp playback.

I have also seen a negative review, where the reviewer mentioned that the output lacks in specific frequencies compared to other phones.
Too bad these frequencies are inaudible by the human ear.

Pointless. Wont make the slightest difference other than imagination .
Play around with an eq and you will get the same results.
Limitations are hardware but the headphone output of the OP3 is not all that bad.

I have the axon 7 and the sound is amazing. I dont even have great headphones and its amazing. Just make sure u turn the dolby toggle on in the notification tray toggles.
Some of you are mixing up stuff here:
Quality is not determined by what you think sounds better (what you can achieve with EQ = Software),
but by what frequencies can be played without distorting the sound, details in lows, highs, at which volume?!
The latter can all be measured and compared and relies on the DAC's quality.
The rest is pure software enhancement. It surely can improve your hearing pleasure,
but a pure DAC will result in low output when using higher specced headphones for example.
(I'm not saying one or the other is better here / Axon7 vs OP3)
