Hi everyone‚ I got my galaxy nexus last week from expansys - so far so good‚ it's an awesome phone.
I've read on multiples places that the GN has support for native wifi and usb tethering via an option under the Wireless & network menu. However I can't seem to find it. I know there are apps that will allow it but I'd rather use the native option if at all avalible. Plus, it was said the former method did not require rooting the device.
Was the option removed from the stock rom ? (I have an ITL41F build - GSM model‚ android 4.0.1). Or was it never there in the first place ? If so it's fine I'll just root the device and use a third party app‚ but I‘m curious to know what happend to this option.
Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me to sort this out.

Yes that's what I'm talking about. But I'm not seeing it on my phone : I have 6 options under Wireless & network > more‚ the last one being 'Mobile networks'.
Why is that?
It sounds like you have a version that has that option removed for some reason. This is something carriers sometimes do, but I'm not sure why it would be missing from one you bought through Expansys. I definitely have it on my stock yakjuux (Canadian) ROM.
There are several versions of the stock ROM. You could try flashing the official Google factory images which should definitely have wifi hotspot.
There are already threads about the different stock ROM versions and how to change to the "official" (yakju) one, so I won't get into that here.
Thank you for your reply.
Well now I'm sure it's been remove/disabled from my rom. I will give flashing the official rom a try - sadly I won't be able to do so for the next couple days.
I'm confused though‚ I was confident I had a 'pure' yakju build‚ and the thread you linked in your post seems to comfirm it (ITL41F/I9250XXKk1).
To find out for sure, install Android System Info and look under System > BuildInfos > Product to see which version you have now.

It says yakju all right. Do you guys with others yakju build in 4.0.1 have that tethering option?
Now i‛m even more confused. How come I don't? It can't have to do with my sim card or the location of my google account right?
the developers of Wifi Tether
were working on it last night... I can't say I was helping, but I did test the latest one on my Nexus Galaxy (pre110).
Have connected my MacBook Pro, Windows 7, Viewsonic Gtablet, and OpenBSD laptop all at the same time. works great for me. Some people have had issues with spontaneous reboots.
Sorry I can't post links (stupid posts rules). Do a search for "issue 1257".
give it a try...

I'm sorry I don't follow. What are you suggesting?
Brake‚ I understand your are talking about the Wifi Tether app‚ which is great‚ but my original intention was to figure out why my yakju build doesn't have the native usb and wifi tethering option when others do‚ and bring it back.
Well‚ if I don't find any other lead I'll just just flash in the lastest yakju version from google and see if that fixes it.
Thanks for your time everyone.
Hello,
I have the same "behaviour" : don't have the personal hotspot and all info on the phone say me I was with the official yakju build in 4.0.1.
Buy phone from uk and use french sim.
Let's us know if you have this option after you flash (if you want to flash )
David.
Hi folks,
same here... I just bought a galaxy nexus in France, v4.0.1 ITL41D I9250XXKK1 and I don't have any tethering option in my Network menu
As far as I understand, I though that ITL41D was the "real" google build... So what can I do now ? I can't
It's nice to be allowed to use this option, but I cannot enable it :-D
My stock build (yakjuux) came with tethering, and it's also in the 4.0.3 AOSP build.
I'd flash Google's stock images.
I have a yakju built, 4.0.1 and i got its uk unlocked version. From the start i had portable wifi hotspot and it works great. Really surprised that its not showing up for u. Did u buy the phone outright did u get it w contract?

As I already mentioned I bought it from expansys, so yes it's SIM free and no contract. I am in France, using a french SIM (maybe that's the problem?) and I'm pretty confident it was shipped from the UK, but I might be wrong.
I can confirm I have a yakju build (4.0.1, ITL41F I9250XXKK1, yup no updates so far).
I'm guessing flashing in another Google 'official' yakju build in 4.0.3 wouldn't help much. Or is it worth trying? Couldn't the OS display the tethering option depending on the SIM card? Or is it possible it was removed from my ROM even though it says yakju and I bought it SIM free?
PS: I am as much interested in getting the option back as to know who is to blame for its disappearance.
Alright so my SIM card seems to be the problem here: If I boot the phone in airplane mode‚ the tethering and portable hotspot option is visible - though not of great help under theses conditions. However, as soon as I disable airplane mode, it disappears right before my eyes.
What information on the sim card could tell ICS to disable the option? Should I complain about it to my carrier?
Same problem here. Bought in france, from expansys, with a french sim card. No tethering option available. Google's firmware.
Booting in airplane mode, the menu is there.
My nexus S, updated to ICS, still show the option!

Definitely sim related. The strange thing is that my nexus s is showing the option!

hi guys,
I have been a lurker for a while, didn't actually have anything meaningful to contribute (to create a new post/thread), i.e. until now!
Bought a galaxy nexus in April when Google started selling it on the Play store. I did not root it and/or modify it in anyway other than trying out a few apps I developed.
Given that background, 3G/HSPA data has not been working on the phone ever since I got and installed the Jelly Bean OTA update.
I thought I also had the Wifi issues that others are facing, but it turned out to be just a setting (Keep WiFi ON during sleep was set to NEVER by the JellyBean update, am pretty sure I didn't do it).
Do you guys have any clue as to what might be happening here? Any troubleshooting tips?
I am on the AT&T prepaid, data was fine until the JellyBean update. My friend with galaxy nexus also started having this problem post the OTA update, but he is AT&T post paid.
any insights???
thank you!
EDIT:
Also, I forgot to mention in my initial post ..
I get good signals and 3G or H also shows up next to the signal bars, but they are in grey.

I didn't call AT&T because I know thats exactly how they are going to reply. If you didn't know it before, AT&T claims the $50 unlimited talk/text/web is unlimited web only for dumb phones but for smartphones you`ll need a separate data top-up. However, I have been using 3G with the same SIM card from November 2011. I had a Nokia N95 till April and then bought the galaxy nexus.....I didn't add the data top-up.
So at first when I started having this problem I thought AT&T finally started blocking 3G on the nexus, but later found out that my friend who is also on AT&T but on a post paid contract also has this same problem from the day he got JB OTA.
Unfortunately, I never went to Phone Information settings until after I got the JB update, so I do not know how it was before the OTA. .

This issue probably requires Developer actions to be solved … anyway I’m posting on General section cause it’s not a properly developer thread …
Since Android 4.1.2 there’s a problem in tethering for all people that has a carrier plan that doesn’t include Tethering. I’m on Vodafone Italy with “mobile internet” plan (2GB/month). I have never had problem with tethering my data connection from my phone to a laptop or tablet but starting from Android 4.1.2 upgrade I noticed that when I activate built in wifi hotspot the APN is automatically and secretly changed from the default one (mobile.vodafone.it) to a new one (web.omnitel.it) that charges my bill with additional costs … It happened to me in the past using branded phone with branded firmware, but after rooting and switching to CyanogeMod firmware the problem was solved … now I’m on an unlocked Galaxy Nexus with CM or others custom ROM …
On 4.1.2 I bypassed this problem using dedicated app “Wifi Tether for Root”, but now on 4.2.1 also this app doesn’t work anymore (ok this is another issue, here you can find more details).
Well … rather bad … I did a lot of research on the web, and here is the most interesting thing I found:
A person working for Roger carrier stated this (see original thread and full post here ):
Android 4.1.2 introduced that ability (and requirement) for Android devices to properly flag when data is for tethering purposes. This is the first time this has been used in a vanilla release of Android.
...
For everyone frustrated by this update to Android: Android respecting a carrier's request to know if data is for a tethered device IS NOT A BUG. IT IS A FEATURE. It's not a feature for users like you and me, it's a feature for manufacturers like Samsung and HTC, so they can in turn build devices that carriers can have more control over.
So, to be clear, THIS IS NOT A BUG. Google INTENDED to respect carrier tethering rules.

So, can someone confirm this behavior? Is there some Developer that can intercept the section of Android OS code that apply this flag to the data download and find the way to avoid this annoying issue??
I want to tether again without pay additional money! I’m paying for 2GB/month! What do you care, Vodafone, how I use it??
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: SOLVED!
After some time someone found a solution, at least for all users with ROOT:
Here is the solution script
Here is a method to setup the script on boot
.
I don't know, AT&T doesn't do this for me.
Can you manually change the APN when the hotspot is turned on?
Hm, never had this happen when I tether my N7 to my GNex, and i'm on a prepaid-card (where something like this would be more likely to occur than on a contract).

I can't edit the APN cause I can't see it! After few minutes I'm tethering I get an SMS from Vodafone that says: we remember you that your plan doesn't include data connection using APN web.omnitel.it ... And then if I check my bill detail I can verify a row reporting connection with this APN and additional amount and connection time

I don't pay for tethering on my T-mobile US plan but tethering never stopped working since 4.0 versions all the way now to 4.2.1 takju.
I have a pre-pay plan, so the carrier is not able to charge me anything extra, all they could do is shut off my data plan or tethering, which they never did.
Edit: I'm not rooted in version 4.2.1. I was rooted in some of the previous versions, but can't remember which ones.

Ciao Furius!
I think I'm in the same situation as you with Vodafone Italy :silly:
I'm running CyanogenMod 10.1 (so Android 4.1.2) with a Samsung Galaxy S2 and can't get the wi-fi thetering work: all seems ok, other devices can see and connect to the hot-spot, but can't get any data from it...
I thought it was some problems with the nightly builds of CM, but other people are reporting that wi-fi tethering is correctly working.
Now I read your message while searching some information about the Galaxy Nexus (my Galaxy S2 developed a faulty loudspeaker, and I'm considering to get it repaired under warranty then sell it and buy a Galaxy Nexus, I've found it at 269€) and maybe we have the same problem, but I've got Vodafone to lock the web.omnitel.it APN, to prevent costly surprises...
I think problems arise with operators that make distinctions between different kinds of APN (like Vodafone Italy with web.omnitel.it and mobile.vodafone.it) and not with the ones that don't care about the APN you use (to my knowledge, TIM Italy doesn't care about the APN you use)
I'll keep an eye on this topic and let you know if I find some news!

With Vodafone Italy, even if you force the "mobile.vodafone.it" APN, the one for the mobile phone navigation, you will be charged for tethering, using the 4.2.1 native tethering.
See this post for more detail.
BTW, we have to find where google added the "flagging" feature, in the native tethering application.
Do someone have any idea where to find it?

Good evening all.
Has anyone with a G4 on VZW noticed issues with apps on wifi since the latest firmware update? I've called Verizon and been on the phone with them for HOURS to no avail.
The only time wifi works normally is in safe mode. When I'm on wifi, most apps just aren't functional at all. We thought it was some app in particular so we reset the phone and the issue persists. The only thing tech support suggests is giving me another refurbished G4 which will get us nowhere as the new G4 will just be running the same firmware.
This is problematic for me as I work in and out of different buildings on any given day. These buildings don't always provide the best reception. I clamored with Verizon for a different, comparable phone. I spoke with LG and their solution is me sending the phone in with the turnaround time being 5-7 business day which is also problematic as I don't have another phone to use. Verizon refuses to acknowledge it's an "issue" because it's not "wide spread". A quick search revealed that this problem is not limited to just me.
I've exhausted my options. I do not want to spend hours on the phone with Verizon again. I do not want to speak with LG for the same phone again. I simply want a working phone. This is the 3rd G4 that I've had that does not work. The 3rd G4 in almost as many months. What are my options here?
tl;dr This is my 3rd LG G4 that doesn't work and the latest firmware update broke the wifi functionality. Verizon refuses to acknowledge the issue and will only give me the same phone, not a comparable phone. What are my options?"
Yup. Since the update. Wifi on my phone is lagging horrendously.

I spoke with them again today. Their only option is to send the same phone again which isn't going to fix anything unfortunately.
Same problem here (and also with friends who have both VZW and the G4). This exact issue popped up on the LG G3, also after an update. Infuriating that they broke another otherwise good phone. The workaround is to install an app called DNSet. It sets the DNS to Google's, which fixes it.

Yeah I'm having the same issue. It's maddening!! Nothing comes through unless I manually sync or have to open the app to get it to sync. How is this an acceptable software update for verizon - who usually requires a high level of quality control on software updates??
The Update broke Notifications over WiFi. It has something to do with IPv6. Verizon PULLED the update because this is a major problem.
Either call Verizon and have them replace the phone (you will get the older firmware 11A back on it)
OR
The fix is to download DDNS or something (It is a VPN service) that routes ALL internet traffic over IPv4 connections. I forget the specific name, but it is being heavily discussed in the "VERIZON UPDATE" forum in the General section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g4/general/update-verizon-t3221673
Read the thread, I think toward the end more.

You can fix this issue without root by using the app DNSet from the Google Play store. You hit 1 button (the one and only button), and it turns off IPv6, and problem solved.

Ive read a few posts about this APN issue. I tired over and over to do the sim card trick with my new pixel 2 xl from google on pie 9.0. It would not stick. Whats funny is when i factory reset the phone, the SIM activates just fine and i get LTE. As soon as i reboot the device I lose LTE. Nothing is changing in the APN settings from what i can see. The default loaded settings are correct, its missing the mmsc info but mms and lte work just fine. No idea what its deal is. I may just switch to an att sim card if this keeps happening. which sucks in my area. Ay suggestions?? I tried to boot twrp but when i fastbooted the img it would get past the screen pattern so i gave up. Also seems like once i updated to 9.0 im stuck with 9.0 roms? There isnt many of them so far....
wanted to add, USB tethering seems to work just fine, still have LTE. im afraid to restart my phone. I dont feel like factory resetting again. I wonder how long i can go without restarting my phone lol
I had a similiar issue with Verizon. When I would reboot I would lose LTE. In order to reboot without losing it I had to put phone in airplane mode, reboot, then turn off airplane mode and all was well. From what I read it is some type of provisioning bug. I don't think I've had this issue for a while now, it seems to be sporadic.

i travel for work a lot so i use 20 to 60gb a month on my phone. So the tether is important and with Verizon straight talk i usually get amazing service and speeds. Im coming from a Moto X pure that had no hotspot service detection, very open bootloader, tons of roms. I should have done more research on the pixel 2 before i bought it. I like everything else about it but the strange OS issues and the lack of support is a bummer. I figured google would have just left this phone very open and easy to tweak.
Yes and with that kind of data usage Project Fi
would not be a good fit for you.
