Moto Z Play Nougat Battery Drain - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Hello everyone,
I'm experiencing heavy battery drain with my Moto Z Play on 7.0 Nougat.
About device:
Android Version: 7.0
Software Channel: reteu
Build Number: NPNS25. 137-24-1-9
Android Security patch level: April 1, 2017
My 3 months old Moto Z Play (Single SIM) is giving me terrible SOT. It came with Android Nougat out of the box, I set it up from my Google account backup and started to use it. For the first 2 weeks, I could only get 3-3,5 hours of SOT with no gaming at all (Browsing with Chrome, watching Youtube videos, WhatsApp, moderate phone use). First, I tried wiping cache, no results...
Today I've done a factory reset through recovery mode and set the phone up as a new device (didn't restored settings from my google account) so far battery drain seems to continue. There are barely 15 apps installed and this time I uninstalled unnecessary Google Apps to make a fresh start. I don't know what drains my battery, but I really want to see 8-10 hours of SOT with my MZP.
Cell reception: Excellent on 2G, Low to medium on LTE and/or 3G. (Battery kept on draining both on 2G and LTE)
Location: High accuracy at all times, scanning is off, google location history is off.
3rd party apps I use frequently: (all are updated)
Snapchat
Youtube
WhatsApp
Chrome
9GAG
Spotify
So far I've tried,
Wiping Cache,
Factory Reset,
Turning Data Saver Mode on
Restricting background data usage for nearly all apps,
Unmounting my 32GB Sandisk microsd card,
Turning on Airplane Mode at night (still lost more than 20% till morning)
Safe Mode,
Resetting App Preferences,
Turning Synchronization off,
Turning all moto suite features off,

May be snapchat and spotify is the reason.
Many of them were having issue with their battery and they also have spotify and snapchat installed.
Try uninstalling both the app and use the device and see how much SOT you are getting.
If this didn't works then perform hard reset and wipe cache partition Together (1st Hard reset then Wipe Cache via recovery).
I was also getting 5-6 hrs SOT earlier but after doing this it becomes insane and i started getting 8-10 hrs SOT.

Yeah, when i uninstall Spotify my battery get really better, that can be the reason
Wysłane z mojego XT1635-02 przy użyciu Tapatalka

Uninstalled Spotify, 9Gag and Snapchat. Let's see what happens.
BTW, I'm literally using my phone with no more than 10 apps installed and now I have to uninstall 3 of them just to get my phone properly. This is ridiculous.

Location in high accuracy will use your WiFi and Bluetooth to ping other nearby devices to guess your location. It uses a lot of battery.Try using in device only mode

High accuracy is fine, turn off wifi and bt scanning under location. Pretty hidden settings and by default on.

Use the app "Island" which sets up a work profile that you can toggle on and off. The toggle will restrict when the apps use background functions and when they do not. Really useful for social media apps.

Wifi and bluetooth scanning is off, I've disabled them since day one. Yesterday I fully charged the device before I go to bed. Then I rebooted into safe mode and turned airplane mode on. So basically all third party apps were disabled and all the wireless capabilities were cut off. Left the phone on the shelf. Today I woke up to see my phone drained 18% battery. Here's a screenshot. The device was sleeping all the time, yet, the battery is drained by 18%.
Maybe it's a faulty unit, what do you think?

Id try hard resetting at this point. I had battery woes at one point, turned out it was the battery saving and monitoring apps that were causing the issue.

Yeah, that's not normal. I've charged last evening and look ss.
Sent from my XT1635-02 using Tapatalk

Damn, cannot edit and attach another ss.
Sent from my XT1635-02 using Tapatalk

Double, sorry. Tapatalk has issues.

Since you get drain while the device is basically doing nothing I'd say try to get it exchanged(the phone )

Quick update:
Did a wipe data and wipe cache through recovery mode.
Set it up as a new device.
Installed NO third party apps, only updated the pre-installed ones.
Charged it up to 100%.
Let it sleep. Next morning, battery drained to 84%. (Excellent cellular signal, Wifi ON all the time.) Check out attached screenshots.
Settings:
Syncronization ON (Only Chrome, Gmail, Contacts, Calendar is activated.)
Location: Battery saving, scanning is OFF.
Backup My Data under Backup & Reset is OFF.
Google Photos app photo backup is OFF.
Rest of the settings are default.

Nougat out of the box in Moto z play?
About phone What is your kernel version? Hardware information?
In developer options take a screenshot of the running services(or see what you have...if you see something... ) cached and running, all information is welcome. Test "show all ANRs" and tell us if any app has problems.

It didn't actually come with nougat, I updated it to nougat right after unboxing. Sorry for misleading information. See attachments for the requested screenshots.

It's strange . Running services (and cached) are ok, no "strange kernel"(I suppose modifications in kernel or something like that, but you have the same as me*) there is nothing(in the info) that causes the battery problem. It can be a "bad" update or hardware problem. I can't help. you should go to technical service or wait to the next update fix your problem.
*I get 8-10 hours of sot,dual sim.

I've never seen a crazy drain like this. If i were you I'd try to flash MM instead. Your first option should be to just do a hard rest and reset everything first. If that doesn't work then I'd say its a faulty unit. I've used both Nougat and MM.. I feel like MM is way better in terms of battery life. This drainage is pretty crazy. Try to upload more pics of your usuage. Maybe something is keeping your phone awake over night.

As I've said in my earlier post, I already tried that wiping everything. I can't go back to MM, can't risk the phone bricking. Tomorrow I'm going to get it fix fixed or replaced.

[POSSIBLE FIXES] Battery drain 5.1.1

Ever since updating to new Android 5.1.1 I'm having sudden battery drains while on stand by it will often start to warm up and I'll would see a drop in 20% battery in like 5 - 10 mins. And reboot fixes this. But this has been happening for a few days. Its not the WiFi as I have toggled the WiFi off the watch and locations are also off. I have done am factory reset a few times but no use. Any ideas? Or is it possible to reflash the update similar how you can do on android devices via adb?
POSSIBLE FIXES/ SOLUTIONS
I have summarised possible fixes and solutions to the battery drain
1. Uninstall Battery stats app
2. Re install android wear using Sony PC Companion (this worked for me)
3. Disable Google fit (credit to @maniusng)
4. Install previous version of android wear companion app
5. Fix by @Bender_0

My fix:
I think I stopped battery drains, but not discussed in the XDA option.
Settings> Wi-Fi Settings> Wi-Fi Disable
And then in Wi-Fi settings> Advanced> Energy Saving 15 minutes.
See if you solved this to you.

EDIT: POSSIBLE ROOT OF PROBLEM
after doing loads of testing i think i may have found the cause. its the WiFi and its drivers because i have noticed that when my phone gets disconnected and then reconnected later on, during the battery cycle i will have a drain. and if i dont allow my watch to loose connection with my phone and then i would not experience battery drain during that battery cycle.

Try turn off Cloud sync on Android wear app on the phone if you didn't do that. Maybe this is the problem.
Mine has been draining too, cloud on or off
I had this too. The last 20% drained very quick during night in a way it never did before
Had similar issues this weekend. Even tried to use it during a half marathon run and the battery died on me during the race. Even the day before the watch just died on me after maybe 4-5 hours.
Haven't tried disabling cloud sync yet, but have turned off Location and Wifi for now. I also uninstalled a few apps I really wasn't using just in case in the background they were draining battery (even if the battery usage monitor wasn't listing specific apps.) The other thing I did was change back to a stock watch face in case the one I was using was draining battery (it was Minimal and Elegant.) Drain has slowed down, so I need to keep playing around with settings.
My guess is it's tied to apps that weren't ready for the 5.1.1 update, so we'll see if I can determine what I was using that started the drain.

yes checked its off in my phone as well
there is a similar thread of a user seeing what is causing the battery drain and he found out that it is "wear battery stats" as it kept waking the watch. i have unistalled this app and the watch battery seems to be ok. after another battery cycle ill let you know what happens
After receiving the update and it killing my battery from 100% to dead in 6 hrs I charged the battery over night took it off charge at 11 am yesterday and at 4 today I'm at 3 % which is 29 hrs with sync and wi-fi on and I'm using Wear battery stats. The funny thing is my battery before the update would not last even close to what I just got.

Have tried the below all while Never having the phone and watch apart more than 2-3 meters:
Wifi off , cloudsync on
Wifi off cloudsync off
wifi off, clousdync off, gestures off
wifi off, clousdync off, gestures off, GPS off
wifi off, clousdync off, gestures off, GPS off + Factory reset (twice)
wifi off, clousdync off, gestures off, GPS off + Factory reset (twice), Cinema Mode
The problem still keeps coming back.
As far as i can tell nothing i do is triggering it.
My next thing to try is to uninstall anything that i can that has a wear app in it, though that's going to be very annoying.
I think most off problems are related to Cloud sync and turning it off will be good for battery. But there is something alse that is draining battery. I had problem with some watchfaces and had to uninstall them day after updating Android wear to 5.1.1. They were killing my watch. Now I am still looking what is draining battery. I'll post my results when I am finished.
Has somebody Google Fit installed and no battery life problems?
I think it could be due to the fact that I have greenifyed the watch faces and watch apps on my phone. I de greenifyed them and I'm gonna check out the battery and keep it updated.

Ok weird.
Uninstall Google fit, battery life is better but I'm still getting Google fit notifications.
It looks like there is a version that ships with the watch by default.... Maybe that's the issue..?

I see no difference but use it like I always have no WiFi
Same here.. I have wear battery stats installed on my computer and I've seen sharp spikes with the battery, up to a 20% drain, that's from 2.33% to 3%. I've done the following with the same issue happening:
1. Went into recovery to clear cache
2. Factory Reset from Watch
3. Removed Wear Mini Launcher
4. Removed all additional watch faces
At first it seemed like it was back to normal.. but then I would get another sharp spike... and at times when powered back up from being dead it would act like the cache was cleared and would start the updating applications before the watch would fully start up. So I went ahead (out of anger) and did the following:
1. Removed all unnecessary applications (Stay Lit Wear was one of them.. possible suspect)
2. Reimaged with Sony PC Compainion 2 (Watch was initially upgraded through ADB)
3. Setup the Watch.
4. Uninstalled updates to Google Play Services on my Phone and reinstalled them back on the phone (thus disconnecting the watch... forcing me to.... )
5. Factory Reset the Watch again.
6. Now that I'm back up and running it seems that my battery is lasting a lot longer... at a drain rate of 1.88%.
Crossing my fingers something in there fixed my issue, and possibly helps someone else.
even after uninstalling wear battery stats, still getting sudden battery drains on idle ambient mode in 10 mins there was a drop of over 20% and it still warms up a lot. I am going to reflash using Sony pc companion.
I hope you guy with battery problem figure it out.Mine is the best It's ever been.

[Q] Why Battery Draining Fast?

I have owned this phone for about 3 days, but I have some battery issues.
I attached 3 pictures, and on the first picture, you can see there appears to be no wakelocks, but on the 2nd picture, the Android OS used the vast majority of my battery life, and the 3rd picture, Android System has a lot of "Wake Up Device" (i don't know what the number means is it minutes?)..
I have uninstalled/disabled most of the apps I don't need, and have the brightness set to low, and on airplane mode with all sync off, and zenmotion turned off, and this still happens. I lost about 11% battery overnight with this problem. It seems like when I am using the device, the battery drops a percent every minute even when I am just scrolling through the Settings.
I only used about 1 hour screentime on this phone and the rest on idle.
I already installed both system updates.
Does anyone know why this happens? I know there is a memory leak problem, but I saw on another thread other people don't have that bad of a drain anymore...

Battery drain issue still not fixed with updates???
Disable PC Link and Party Link default apps, worked for me. They're default apps using cpu all the time like they're SO Android... Disable all default apps that you don't use too
I've got here two brand new models, which differ only for touch and battery version (Z2C3 01040005 1525 and ... 1526)
The 1526 doesn't show any drain. The 1525 does, as of its very first boot. I tried keeping same settings of course.
I'd like to point out that when connected and charging it shows big steps like going from 63 to 72% and it also reaches 100% in less than 60 mins.
When disconnected the discharge path exhibits about 1:15min of operation.
May I suspect the battery is defective?
PS: after a factory reset from recovery seems have fixed the problem for now at least...
Asus Zen phone 2 laser battery drain ?
I made an account with this website and took the time to write this, so I can let users who own this phone know one of the
biggest battery drain features I've found......DISABLE HOMESCREEN APP MOVEMENT SENSOR, in app icon settings.
When you tilt your phone app icon adjust to the tilt, yes looks cool until you realize how much battery you could save by leaving then static and not constantly running a fDucking tilt sensor.

[Q] Battery drain after Marshmallow update

So I updated to Marshmallow on my LG-H815, and now my battery drain is a lot higher than on 5.1.1. I'm checking GSAM and it seems like Android System (logd) is using up the most battery.
The phone is running quite warm as a result, before, at the end of the day, my phone would be on around 60%, now it gets to 20%.
I can't seem to find much about logd, but so far I've disabled WiFi scanning, and checked to make sure Activity Logs is disabled.
Does anyone know what could help to bring Marshmallow promised battery life improvements?
Cheers.
I had a battery drain because of Bluetooth. After disabling it it's gone. It's only temporary solution because I need BT to use my SW2 smartwach. So LG do your job.

First thing is to do a factory reset after you upgrade to MM, my battery was worse until I bit the bullet and reset it. Now I get 2 days use with 5hrs screen on time, most of that on GSM data.
my experience with MM
Mine just updated to 20c (EU - Latvia) and its flawless! Had some battery drain at the beginning, now after 3 restarts it runs a lot better and battery life lasted around 15% longer! If someone have issue with processes called dex2oat as they running and eating up the battery, you will need to reset your phone to factory settings, reinstall all of the apps you had on Lollipop and restart phone few times. Mine disappeared next morning. I guess they were apps still optimizing for battery! Hope it helps!
My experiences with MM are:
1) Bluetooth drains THE **** out of our devices. If you don´t need it, disable it. No idea why, but with BT off, I have over 1 hours of screen on time time more every day.
2) Disable auto-brightness. Do it. Helped me to get from 2,5 h SoT to over 3,5 h.
3) Greenify really works for me. I know we have Doze, but Greenify affects system apps...maybe thats why. Or maybe it´s just voodo, idk.
Still, battery life could be A LOT better.
Well I've just done a factory reset, will see how tomorrow goes.

No improvement after a factory reset, may roll back to 5.1.1
In my case I did update from LL directly, battery was a disaster, disabled location services improved a lot. Found out how to do CSE installation with LG UP, reflashed the phone and disabled location services, battery is great...I end up the day with 40% with normal usage with WIFI at work.
I updated my H815p (south africa) to Marshmallow 6.0 using the LGup utility the first time I flashed I selected update only option, and I was getting unusual drain so I retried and this time opted for refurbish option which I believe is the fresh install option, and still only get 55 min screen on time. Android OS is keeping the device awake all the time. What can I try to solve this.

thank you very much sir !
great solution without root !
Since getting the update my battery performance has been terrible. Its takes hours to charge the phone and when left off charge last night i lost almost 20% with thr phone doing nothing. When i use my phone the battery can be seen draining.
I have restarted the phone a number of times. Dont really want to do a hard reset though.
I have emailed LG and shall keep you all posted.
Hi,
I joined this forum just for this issue. I was all excited about the new battery improvement with MM 6.0 although my LG G4 had excellent battery life before - thought better is always a good thing.
Until I upgraded to MM 6.0 about a week ago. I thought I was just using my phone more as it kept being at 20% by 5pm when I was never less than 75% before?
So I started doing some reading and checking the battery usage and installed Greenify.
Last night I had my phone at 100%. Unplugged for 8 hours with no usage - I was asleep...
This morning battery was at 80%???
So I checked what is using the battery. The issue is that you cannot reset these items to zero but they do seem to fluctuate so this maybe a current usage? I pulled the battery for 30 seconds and the percentages are about the same.
Google Services 15% (I suspect my location services that are enabled but they were enabled under LL 5.1 and never killed the battery).
Next is a weird one com.lge.exchange 12% (I assume the exchange server I get work email on) - have always had it before as well if that is it and have not changed the sync settings which are manual so only get mail when I call for it)
Phone idle 12% - what is phone idle taking 12% for?
Cell standby 11%.
So based on a 20% drop over eight hours with ZERO usage other than standby - my LG G4 will last about 30 hours on STANDBY. No usage - just sitting in a quiet room.
Can someone help what is now sucking my battery dry all the time?
TIA
Trevor
I have the same issue, after I did the V20D-JAN update a week ago. My SOT dropped from ~4h to less then one with "Android System" beeing on top of my battery history with 50%. I really wonder, what happened to my device.
I did a total of 5 factory resets, 2 full discharges (not hard, when your battery only lasts about 30min of continuous usage) and still, nothing changed. It even got to the point, where it discharged while on the wall adapter after a factory reset. I installed no apps, no root or nothing. Full stock after a reset and it dropped charge in no time.
Disabling location, logging, LG health and most other stock apps after a factory reset did not change a thing. "Andoid System" was at 40-50% battery usage in less then 15min after I booted the phone.
Anyone else had this, too?

Android System always higher ?

Guys got my OP3 few days back but what I'm noticing is that after 2-3 days that my Android System is higher then Screen usage which wasn't before. Never facing this kind of drain before on OP3 or on my Nexus 5 that I used to use before. Is there anything unusual? I'm attaching screenshot of better battery stats also please do look into them.
Anyone ?
I had the same issue resulting in terrible battery life since Android System was constantly working the CPU. It's probably due to the Oxygen OS kernel. I sent back my unit and asked for a replacement because I didn't want to install a custom ROM on a brand new phone just yet.
Same issue here, Android System uses more battery than my screen. Also it looks like the phone was awake all night tonight with screen off, so I had more standby drain.
This is most likely due to an app that has a rogue process running in the background constantly keeping gms awake. Try clearing data for the play store and turning off sync for any apps you have. See the drain overnight and report back.
Same problem here... "Android-System" is consuming the highest amount of all my other apps ...
My OP3 has a lifetime of about 6-8 hours ...
Yeah even it's the same for me... Even did a factory reset but didn't help

when you turn off auto sync, does whatsapp still work without having to manually sync every now and then? afaik, most of the social apps rely on this sync to function properly and having to manually sync every time for whatsapp or twitter would defeat its purpose.

Whatsapp doesn't use sync to fetch messages. Sync is for syncing contacts on Whatsapp
guys try disabling ambient mode and see if that lowers the android system drain.
i'm checking it myself on my op3
That does not work for me. I have everything disabled - daydreams, ambient, proximity wake, Google now, now on tap, auto sync, oneplus launcher but android system continues to take up more battery even when the screen is off.
The Opskin package is included in Android system, maybe rendering the ui drains more battery
I think I fixed this by disabling "location" and/or "location determination" (DE: Standortbestimmung)

Terrible battery life since Android 10

Since the latest update of Android 10, my phone will not even last me a day. I've asked Google Assitant if my battery is bad and it told me it's fine. But I can do 30 min of light new reading and it's dropped by 20%, previously I could easily get an hour of Reddit and reading and it would drop to 90-91%.
I've tried many things, like clearing cache of Google App and Google Play Service but it still drains. I have no apps running the background that I see are taking a lot of resources.
Try a custom kernel; there are a number of good ones out there. I use caesium.
I'm using latest: 10 factory image, EX kernel, twrp, and magisk.
Today I was at 2hr 55 min with 47% remaining, and my overnight drain is about 6%, which are both about the same as what I was getting on 9x.
IIRC "wi-fi and BT scanning" (location) were turned ON by default when I switched to 10, so I turned them off. Not sure how much, if any, additional drain that might cause.
Yes...this ^^^; I am experiencing the same as well...
I noticed I used to have such excellent battery life on my 2XL, but no longer... I used to use it pretty hard (SOT plus apps like GPS or streaming music/video), and still have a good percentage leftover at the end of the day (15-20%)....
I'm unsure what, if anything specific, might be causing such the drain, but I "chalked" it up to the new OS version....maybe it's inadvertently attempting to sense off-screen gestures for all i know (which would be an understandable loop with that being a Pixel 4 particular and makes sense of the drain)...
Just some basic info on my device: October patch, Magisk v20, custom kernel: Caesium (successor of the legend Flash kernel), AOD is enabled, manual brightness but usually at 80%-ish, “Saturated” color scheme, Dark theme enabled (in both Display settings and in Developers settings), “Optimizing battery use” is enabled for most apps….

How old is your Pixel 2 XL? Google Assistant also says my battery health is fine but I definitely have battery degradation and I'm not surprised after 2 years.

Thanks my battery is good. Although it's only been 10 months. I hope dark mode is supported in more apps specially WhatsApp, Chrome and Facebook. That will help the battery even more.
October update is really buggy. I didn't like it at all
My battery life is about the same. But my phones takes WAY longer to charge esp if i am not using a google quick charger.

Methinks it's time for the dreaded factory reset. 8:45 minutes of screen on time here according to Accubattery with wifi and location always on and not the greatest signal up here in the Mountains...
My screen on time is 3 hours at max...no apps running in BG... tried greenify also but no luck...12 months old phone
