Full wipe/folders safe to delete from root - Verizon HTC One (M9)

I've done a lot of searching for this, but have been unable to find an answer.
What I would like to do is a FULL wipe of my M9. I've used TWRP's advanced wipe to wipe everything, but it still doesn't wipe everything I want it to. I don't want to see folders I've created, app settings, etc. I want to delete literally everything and install a ROM that is completely fresh with no saved settings/folders/app settings/etc.
Is this something I will need to delete folders from the root of the system for? I know I can't delete the boot, and recovery folders, but what exactly is absolutely safe to remove? Or, what folders can I delete to remove saved OS settings/folders/app settings?
Phone is S-OFF, unlocked bootloader, and latest TWRP, running the latest Viperone M9 ROM.
Thanks for any information!

[Q] Data still available after Flashing new ROM

Hi
I just flashed my first ROM on my GS3. I went from the LH1 stock OTA from Samsung, rooted, installed CWM, and then flashed AOKP(Jellybean) Task & Ktoonsez - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684 - many thanks to them btw for some amazing work.
Anyway once I flashed the ROM and GAAPS and my device booted up, all my data was still there... my photos, my apps reloaded, even the data inside the apps was still there, which I cannot understand how. Don't get me wrong I am happy that everything was still there. Also, I did make a backup from CWM but I did not restore it because I did not need to (since all the data loaded on its own).
My question is: was this feature built into this ROM or is this something that is normally supposed to happen.
If you didn't factory reset (wipe data/cache) before flashing AOKP, then yes, all your apps will still be there. That's not recommended though because lingering system settings from the stock ROM could mess with things.
And factory reset doesn't erase your internal storage or SD card, it just wipes apps and settings, so your photos and stuff will be there regardless.

Thanks for the reply. I did definitely did factory reset in CWM as I followed all instructions to the T. I am not sure why but all of my apps remained, I saw some of them auto download rather quickly and for example I have this app called Vaulty. All of its contents were still inside.
Odd nonetheless

Stuck at the Google screen.

Hey. I need some help.
My phone doesn't pass the Google screen.
The device worked after installing JellyBam 6.6 and everything was great.
I turned it off after restoring few apps from TB, and then it didn't turned on to the ROM.
Before installing I wiped cache, devlik and data.
I can get to fastboot mod and from there to the recovery (TWRP 2.4.3.0).
Also I can use the toolkit.
What should I do??
It happend to my friend and he told me he wiped everything and installed stock,
but I don't want to format the internal storage as he did.
Should I just install the ROM again, backup and install another ROM?
Should I wipe system?
you restored system apps from TiBu, which is a bad idea.
reflash the rom/gapps then restore your data, but do not restore system apps.
I didn't restore many system apps.
I think only the clock, some app that I made as system one (Notification Toggle), the launcher,
Time zone and few minor things like thats.
Now I wiped cache, devlik and data again.
Should I just install the ROM now or should I wipe system before? (TWRP says it's inly wipe the ROM)
You have the rom in sd rite?
So just go to recovery abd wipe cache and data and system.
After that make a fresh install of the ROM. Let it boot up.
-Rik[Rittik]
doesnt matter. you restored system apps which can cause problems
wipe, reflash rom, restore only non-system apps/data

Just do a factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik and flash the ROM then the Gapps and reboot. You may not even need the factory reset though. Try without it first.
Already did factory reset..
What is system reset and when I need to use it?
If it's wiping the rom, shouldn't it done before changing one?
OH, I just realized I deleted the ZIP file from my device.

I've never done a system wipe. But I assume it wipes EVERYTHING. Meaning if you do that, you better flash something right after so you have something to boot to. Otherwise it will never boot and you will have to hook it up to a computer and flash a stock image and start over. I dont know if wiping the system will wipe your SD card as well. If all you did was changes some system apps and data around then a simple re-flash of the ROM should fix it. If its not then I'm going to say that there is something else wrong.
I don't have to ROM.zip on my device.
Can I somehow do this using Fastboot Mode and my PC?
I tried with OTG and DOK but it's not working :X
boot into recovery and use adb to push the rom to your device.
adb push c:\yourlocationofrom\rom.zip /sdcard/
Okay, I did it, but I can't find the file..
It says that the file passed..
I did "adb push D:/JellyBam.zip \sdcard\"
Where did the file moved to?
OK, got it!
I tried again with upsided / \ and it works.
THANKS A LOT!
working
So I shouldn't restore any system app?
Not even data?
And what about SMS, data usage and stuff like that?
Apps that I made as system app (Like notification toggle)
Launcher??

It depends on what ROM you were on when you made the backup. Are you coming from a different ROM? Because thats when you should NOT restore system stuff. Thats like trying to add stuff to the system that is not meant for the ROM. It doesnt take that long to set up all your settings manually. I would just stay away from restoring system stuff with Titanium Backup. There are apps that backup and restore your sms messages in the Play Store that work well. What launcher are you wanting to restore? If you made any app a system app previously, I would just restore it as a user app and THEN make it a system app again. Dont restore it directly as a system app. And before you do anything, make a backup of your ROM so you dont have to go through all this again.
I restored few things, but Data only.
Now there isn't a problem.
THANKS again for helping

[Q] Ready - kinda

OK - so I have my T-Mobile s3 that was rooted with CSRom (some version...)... and... I'm needing to move to the newest stable Dandroid (4.6?).
What I've done so far is:
1. Backed up calendars/contact onto Gmail.
2. Used Titanium to do backup of app/data to SD - and the the my PC
3. Did a Nandroid backup using GooManager via TWRP.
So, what's next? I've forgotten all I BARELY learned about this stuff well over a year ago.
My thinking is I've got to:
1. Do a FULL WIPE. I'm trying to follow the instructions from here:
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...l-wipe-whats-big-deal-steps-take-15-mins.html
- in doing this, am I bascially doing a factory format? if so, after this step I'll have what? - a 'blank slate" (don't know what to call it) ... that is a phone LACKING samsungs newest software for the phone (I've not kept up I don't even know what the newest one is called, Gingerbread? Cowpile? Cockroach?)... anyhow, the factory format just cleans off everything or does it clean off AND put on the newest S3 software? And if it puts on the newest... WHERE... to I get that software from? Is part of the facotry format an OTA update or such?
My guess is - tell me if I'm right- the factory format just blanks everything out - then I have to hook up my phone to my computer and use ODIN3 to install a stock rom that I get from somewhere? if so - again - where from?
2. Install the stock software using ODIN.
3. Reboot into stock... then shut down.
4. Boot into TWRP using the 3 button method... and wipe the phone again including the cache.
5. Reboot via TWRP to custom recovery.
6. From here I think I should load Dandroid 4.6 something which I now have on my PC. what I don't know is how to get Dandroid visible to TWRP so I can tell it to install it for use. Do I just unzip the Dandroid file and copy if over the my SD card or what?
7. Then flash Dandroid and reboot into it.
8. Use Titanium to reinstall my apps and data.
I'm sure I've got lots of steps wrong and maybe wrong apps to use too.
I'm generally trying to follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2124754
but having to google all over the place to try and figure out what is involved in doing each step fo the guide.
So, tell me where I've gotten it wrong so I can take the next steps...
and please keep it simple as I've forgotten everything... or more accurately - remember just enough to totally mess up my phone.
TIA

You've overcomplicated the process quite a bit: Factory reset wipes /data (ALL your downloaded apps + ALL app and system settings, even ones you didn't download) and /cache. The ROM remains, but it is a "fresh start"
If you want to go back to TouchWiz (Dandroid), do this:
1) Reboot into TWRP.
2) Wipe > advanced: System, dalvik cache, data, cache.
3) Flash Dandroid.
4) Done.
Do not restore any system app data (if you backed it up). Only user app data. And if it's acting funny, wipe the app's settings.
By the way, Android releases are named after yummy treats. Mmmmm cockroach.
so
Simpler sounds better to me. Just to clarify though - do I need to to a factory wipe and then follow your steps 1-4... or... just 1-4?
My goal is mostly to get my BT working with my new car stereo CSRom wasn't agreeing with this idea. And, to have the ability to tether to my ipda. Dandroid will let me do this right?
Thanks...

Factory reset wipes /data and /cache. So, either factory reset, or wipe /data and /cache from within the advanced wipe menu. But you still need to wipe /system.

[Q] How do I restore /system on same stock HTC 4.4.3 ROM and keep apps?

HTC Clock widget looks weird today after running filesystem repair in TWRP on /system, white background with white data so I am going to restore /system back up in TWRP as something is wrong when trying wp_mod.ko on my rooted S-ON HTC One M8 4.4.3 T-Mobile Sense 6.
But I have few questions as I only found how to restore to stock for warranty/returns or from different non-stock ROMs. ANd I have same stock ROM that I want to restore before /system got damaged.
I want to keep my apps and their data. Possibly home screens and settings to save lots of time.
I did back up user and system apps and their data in Titanium Backup and /data and /System partition in TWRP
1. When flashing different ROMs it is always required to do wipe in TWRP. What about if it is the same stock ROM?
If I want to just restore my /system partition backup before it got file system errors, what do I need to do exactly to keep my apps and settings if possible?
2. Is wipe to factory required?
3. WIpe just certain things and which?
4. Is there a way to back up and restore Xposed modules' settings?
Thank you in advance for help.
Hi,
1. Flashing different roms should always start with wiping system, data, cache and dalvik. Use titanium backup to backup your user apps. And you can restore them after. Don't restore sysyem apps. Usually if you are just flashing an update of the same rom, you can dirty flash, unless the Dev says otherwise. That means just going into recovery and flashing the rom update. No wiping. If you have any issues though, the first thing you'll be told is to clean flash.
2. For a different rom, yes. See number one.
3. See number one.
4. See number one... Titanium backup.
As far as system settings, like sounds and what not... You will have to set them again after a clean flash. If you use a launcher from the play store, like Nova for example... You can backup with titanium and restore after and your home screens will be restored. With the stock launchers, no. You will have to arrange them again.
Hope that helps. ?

Question about roms that require full wipe (newbie)

It has been a long time since I have installed roms and when I did in the past my HTC incredible had a sd card so it was easy to get data on/off the device.
I have noticed that several ROM installs for the HTC One m7 require a full wipe which would wipe my restore backups as well. But I wanted to maintain my TWRP backup so I can revert if the ROM doesn't work or if I don't like it's features.
Can I maintain the backup and install or do I have to full wipe ?
Can I pull the backup off and then put it back on. I am sure I could get it off but once I have a bad install not sure how I could put it back on the device.
I have S-Off and Unlocked Bootloader on Verizon device.

Full wipe means BOOT, CACHE, DALVIK CACHE, DATA, & SYSTEM....
NOT INTERNAL STORAGE! NO rom install requires wiping internal storage, as THAT'S where all your TWRP BACKUPS, pics, videos, Roms, etc. Are all stored on your devicw.
So in a nutshell, NEVER WIPE INTERNAL STORAGE. IT ISN'T NEEDED FOR ANY ROM INSTALL

OK Thanks that makes more sense. Some instructions say to do exactly that "Wipe Cache, dalvik, data, system" and some say "Must perform Full Wipe" and the later was making me think I needed to wipe the whole device.
