Need MM OTA UPdate for the Unlocked Moto Z Play, - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

hi i need the OTA zip file for the Moto Z Play because i used to have free unlimited wifi hotspot until i updated the phone,
I already have the Android 7.1.1 update but things keep crashing all the time, is it posible for me to downgrade the os?
the phone is unlocked
model : XT1635-02

Below is the method I know of but it seems people have had issues after upgrading to 7.1.1 so you may not be able to down grade at this moment.

I will advise you that it is a bad idea to downgrade. After the April 7.0 patch, downgrading to Marshmallow and OTAing back to Nougat will result in a hard brick, which cannot be repaired without the necessary blank flash files, which are not available.

I've read about this issue. So basically only for those who had the April 7.0 patch on their Moto Z play will hard brick the device? When they downgrade and update? I've downgraded plenty of times, but decided not to OTA back to nougat.. Now I'm worried if I accidently OTA to Nougat will my phone get hard bricked?

According to a user here, the brick happens when you install the April security update, downgrade to Marshmallow, then OTA back to Nougat, typically bricking on the first, initial update to Nougat. I've downgraded from the January patch once back to Marshmallow, then OTA'd to Nougat + February, then N + March whenever my carrier released it without any issues. I have not received the April patch yet though, but I think you're good.

Awesome. I think it's time to stop flashing roms now lmao.. I dont wanna brick my phone.

I just got the April patch today, and it has not bricked my phone, so if you've never installed that update, you should be okay to OTA.

ok, im confused, I want to downgrade from nougat 7.1.1 to android mm 6.0 with adb, my phone is not rooted i just want to downgrade normally to have hotspot again

you can't downgrade unless you unlock the bootloader, and are ok with potentially turning your phone into a brick.

Ah, I finally find out that I am not the only one with hotspot issue on 7.1.1. But 7.1.1 is so good that I am not going to downgrade only for the hotspot issue. I will wait for the Official 7.1.1 release to fix that issue.

Great. I've heard that the reason for why people are bricking their phone is because of the updated bootloader? The April patch updates the BL to C1.07 and mine right now is 1.05. Do you think I can flash the Xenon HD rom (7.1.1) and if for some reason i want to downgrade again i wont brick my phone?

dont get confused. I never downloaded the april security patch. my bootloader version is c1.05 which i believe is the feb patch. the april patch is c1.07. If you downloaded the April patch and downgraded do not try to install the ota. it will brick your phone.

What's the reason for hard brick ?
When downgrading then receiving OTA Update .

No!!!!! What is happening to my phone!! Bizarre OTA update

Ok long and short; reverted to MM base, wiped clean, accepted the OTA for 7.0. Did not get an error message in stock recovery while it updated. It finished went to reboot and nothing. When I plug it in , led flashes. unplug it and led turns off. Plug in and out of computer. And the PC recognizes something is plugged in but can't find any hardware changes in device manager. Not sure what I ca try next????
Attempted
fast boot - no device
Adb - no device
Computer - makes sound when plugged or unplugged but not in window explorer
Rsd lite- no device.
I feel like the battery died while writing battery charging files or something???
Willing to try anything
Thanks guys. Matt
RETUS xt1635-02 / sec. patch either August or November 2016 mm 6.0.1
It's a hard brick. Sad, there is nothing you can do to fix it. Except You will need to send it back to the manufacturer or change the logic board.
The reason of the brick is accepting 7.0 ota after downgrading to MM.

Another one. Sucks bro...
The issue did indeed come from downgrading and then accepting the OTA. When you downgrade firmware on a moto phone you can NOT flash the downgraded bootloader. It can cause problems like this.
That's what I figured, wasn't worried since I was on November security patch. why is it that I was able to do so a couple months ago? Was on MM ota'd then custom rom and when I had problems I flashed MM and ota'd back to 7.0? I

Help regarding unrooting, restoring and accepting 7.1.1 OTA.

Hi. Im new here so please help me.
I have a Moto Z Play XT1635-02 on 7.0 with the 1st May Patch installed.
I unlocked the bootloader to root this device.
I rooted with this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/correct-rooting-moto-z-play-feb-17-t3560268
Now i want to go back to stock firmware to accept the OTA i just recieved for 7.1.1.
My main query is that, i have RETGB device and its on build number NPN25.137-24.3
I can't find any firmware for RETGB software channel.
I did find the OTA for this, which i have downloaded through the moto ota link generator tool by erfanoabdi.
Now, can any one guide me on how to restore stock without messing up my device?
I have downloaded two retail firmwares:
1)XT1635-02_ADDISON_7.0_NPNS25.137-24-1-9_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml
2)XT1635-02_ADDISON_7.0_NPNS25.137-24-1-4_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml
Is it safe to flash any of these on my May patched device or should i somehow find the may patched firmware?
Waiting for your kind replies! :')

Yes on TWRP no on future updates.. being there is not official release for you. Plus the next major update if it happens would not be till O is released which we would not see till way after the new year.
Once you unlock bootloader and root, no going back...

I don't seem to get why the RETGB firmware isn't released.

On the Verizon blackberry priv, there was a way to install the ROM with no Verizon bloatware, no rooting or anything.
Same with my T-Mobile s7 edge, is there something for the Verizon moto z play?

I don't think that its possible with the Verizon MZP.
There's no access for anyone to unlock its bootloader as of yet.
So there's no development for it either.
But who knows? Don't lose the hope! :'D

Is it safe to flash April update image on May update to return to stock?

I'm currently on the May security update (NPN25.137-24.4) with TWRP and Magisk. I can't find the stock ROM for this update so I have no way to return to stock May update. Can I flash oem/boot/logo/recovery/system from the April update to "return" to the April update and take the OTAs that way?
I ask because I'm aware of the people downgrading to MM from Nougat and then taking OTAs bricking their device due to different bootloaders.
Afaik, downgrading to mm and then accepting ota will brick your device.
Wait for someone else to confirm.

hmmm. bump. the last stock rom before 7.1.1 is still not available anywhere.
To add onto this thread, why isn't there a 7.1.1 stock rom uploaded anywhere?
I bit the bullet and flashed the previous version to return to stock. It worked fine. Updating to 7.1.1.
Now... does anyone have a 7.1.1 stock image anywhere for me to be able to return to stock later? Whenever I try
fastboot boot twrp.img
It just locks up at the TWRP splash screen (using Alberto's twrp port, 3.1.1)

there's still no image of 7.1.1 for the Addison, maybe in a few months
you can downgrade avoiding the gpt.bin and (I believe)the bootloader.bin, after that you can download the OTA file from the forum and install it, check the forum for more info
are you sure that's safe? I felt ok going from 7.0 may update to 7.0 april update cuz I was sure there wasn't a change in bootloader or anything. But going from 7.1 to 7.0 to take the OTA sounds like the exact same scenario as ppl who went from 7.0 to 6.0 and then bricked their device when taking OTAs.
Try this, although it's from Verizon but works for other devices as well without any issues.

Just a friendly reminder, never ever downgrade your bootloader and accept/install OTA's unless you are ready and prepared to unbrick your device. Many folks had brick their devices when they downgrade their bootloader and accept ota. If u are in a soak test firmware then best thing to do is wait until they release the 2nd or final soak firm. :good:

Downgrading your stock firmware generally will not downgrade your bootloader (you'll usually see a security downgrade error and/or pre-flash validation error if you try).
So if you do downgrade, you'll likely have an (newer) Oreo bootloader and (older) stock Nougat system. If you attempt to use a stock Nougat OTA update, the Nougat OTA may corrupt your newer Oreo bootloader and hard brick your device. OTA updates appear to only check if your system is the correct patch level, and do not appear to determine if your bootloader is of the same patch level. As you've downgraded, this mismatch of bootloader/stock system patch levels and stock OTA corruption is why downgrading is risky. The act of downgrading won't cause you issues, the use of stock OTA updates (regardless of whether they're from XDA or Motorola) may well cause you issues.
If you downgrade to the December 2017 7.1.1. firmware and it emerges that the next OTA update you receive is the Oreo OTA, you may be okay. However, if you downgrade and receive a Nougat OTA (e.g. you downgraded to the Nov 2017 firmware, or there is another Nougat OTA before the Oreo OTA), you may encounter serious trouble. We saw similar issues when the 7.1.1 soak test got leaked - users would downgrade from 7.1.1 to 7.0 and proceed to hard brick when they attempted to use OTA updates (because they had a newer bootloader). Luckily, we had a blankflash then, I do not know if the blankflash will still work for Oreo bootloaders.
As mentioned above, you can wait for the soak test OTA updates to be leaked or wait for the Oreo stock firmware to be captured, which should be safer to update with.

Android 9 Pie update

Soooo.....I just bought this phone, unlocked the bootloader and installed Magisk.
Today, I got a system update notification saying Android Pie is ready to download.
Anybody else getting this and if so, I have to go back to 100% stock in order to upgrade right? Then unlock BL again?
Mine isn't showing the update yet. I've got the TA-1068. Not unlocked or anything.
It is possible someone jumped the gun, releasing it too early, and they pulled it so can't download it.
Not yet available on my nokia 6.1. I think we are a couple of weeks away from the update.

What security update level of android 8.1 are you on?
Good luck getting 100% back to stock.
I have a TA-1045 and I unlocked the bootloader and installed Magisk on the July patch of android 8.1. I get update prompts for the August security update, but the update won't install. I tried completely removing Magisk, but it stills fails with "Installation Failed". I don't think anyone has a stock recovery image (at least for TA-1045) to restore
At this point if you flash twrp/magisk you have no way of restoring to stock and accepting OTA updates. You will be stuck on the update you are on until someone figures out a way to take OTA updates or someone gets a hold of stock firmware images for your device (none yet for TA-1045)

Nope - don't think its Chinse - it appears to be a "global" or international version. I don't really notice a difference from my original stock.
I got it from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...-to-flash-global-firmware-pl2-222e-0-t3831764
And was able to flash the "extracted version" with fastboot. I used some fastboot instructions that I found for a chinese rom and changed the filenames to match the worldwide filenames and it worked without the OST tool

I guess this OTA is a fake. No one with a Nokia 6.1 has reported getting an Android Pie notification. It's super rare that just one single person will get it.

This. Unless OP is an insider and just dun goof'd, then I fail to see this as legit.
Slightly off-topic:
I was on the June security patch on my 6.1 until yesterday. I received an OTA notification while half asleep and got all excited thinking it was the Pie update, but no, it was the July security patch. What's interesting is that immediately after installing I received the notification for the August security patch, and promptly installed that. May just be me being lucky, but that almost imples that HMD are trying to push out the latest security updates to devices as a way of preparing for Pie maybe?
