hi
follow this thread instruction to restore the stock os read all the the steps and foloow it
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
you can flash any custom rom to have a working device !!!!!!!!
Thanks ill give this a go
i have flashed a custom rom. but i ended up with a deaf phone !, now this may be hardware and not the rom hence the need to stock it so i can confirm it either way.
Ive also had numerous rom/nand failures hence my request for assistance.
Thanks again
Stephen
ps can i use the TWRP 3.0 to install or is that version specific ?
Ok i flashed 4.25.771.6 all went smoothly and i got audio indication of the phones boot up :-} the phone is now installing apps, but i did this previously and it hung overnight attempting to initialize the apps so im waiting hopeflly for a successful installation !.
Stephen
Cant thank you enough, the phone is now alive and kicking
I cant believe how simple and quick that was as ive spent quite a few frustrating days attempting to get it operational, and thought i was on a pointless mission, ive waded though an awful lot of os/roms/nands all with little success.
thank you
very much
stephen
Marshmallow
Ive just attempted an update to 6.13.771.4 mm from the same link, but the O/S hangs on "apps initialization"
Also i did download the update via OTA but on reboot into TWRP i dont see an option to flash the rom
Do i need to update through progressive versions ?
Thanks

Read all the steps again and use the proper files as mentioned in the guide-thread
You can't flash stock OTA with twrp
Do a factory reset before and after doing all the steps
Sent from my HTC M8 using XDA Labs
Heres a list of my progress so far.
1) Flashed version 4.25.771.6 using TWRP 3.0.0000 and all works fine following the guide you linked.
2) Once the above is flashed, im then informed it will auto update to 6.13.771.4 and proceeds to download the required files via OTA
once downloaded the system attempts to update, which results in a re-boot into TWRP recovery and hence it fails.
3) Flashed version 6.13.771.4 using TWRP 3.0.0000 and it hangs at "APP Initialization" following the guide you linked.
Am i right in thinking that if i remove TWRP and return to the stock boot, that the OTA update would install ?.
Thanks for your advice so far
Stephen
Ps my works Pc uses a second user account Essef1959/Piperetti are the same user
@ahmed.ismael said read all the steps but it seems you didn't as you missed step 11, install stock revovery for OTA to proceed with installation.

4th line of my last post indicated i had already worked that one out, and yours was the answer i was looking for thanks ,although i used the term boot and not recovery

the phone set this up then rebooted into recovery mode and installed, but i still have the issue of the system hanging on "starting apps" !

What about flashing a custom rom ?
also i would suggest you to flash the firmware but flash a custom rom first to see how it will goes

I Have flashed a custom rom but this did,nt function with any audio related process.
I,ll have another attempt at one, but dont understand why it fails with a pucka rom ?.
Thanks
Stephen
Ok i flashed leedroids latest offering with TWRP 3, installed fine but once again it hangs on "App Initialization" i left it running for more than an hour.
So obviously there is an issue somewhere ?.

Try to restore the backup again but this time don't install the stock recovery but install the firmware from post #5 in the same thread ( it may and may not help in booting the device )

Yeah i have seen it before, someone have the same case as yours
Marshmallow RUU won't boot but any older RUU will boot just fine
So you have a very limited option either stick with a lollipop rom or an aosp rom ( i think nougat roms will boot just fine )
Sorry there is no much you can do

You,ve been very help full and saved me an awful lot of time which i would have wasted looking for the right s/w, so again thanks for your advice.
I am enjoying the phone at the moment but will attempt a nougat install in the future, so dont get to comfy yet lol.

First of all , Hi everyone ! And please excuse my english, it's not my native language... (wich is French)
I did not want to brick my HTC One (m8) so i went here before to do something wrong.
I received my phone the first august and I rooted it 5 days ago, when it was in kitkat 4.4.2. I did not know that i had to update it to 4.4.3 (even if every man in earth should use his brain and do the update) before to root it.... (because now i can't install custom rom to use link2sd efficiently because all of the best custom rom (that actually use .ext partition on Micro Sd card) are in android kitkat 4.4.3 or 4.4.4)
I know that this question has been asked several times but i did not find the answer for my problem, so i'm really sorry to ask this but i have to.
Okay I rooted my htc when it was in 4.4.2 with TheUnlockr methode on youtube and since then the only things that I did is :
install busybox (twrp) , es explorateur, titanium backup, diskdigger, airdroid, apptoide, root checker, lucky patcher and clean master, NOTHING else.
Now i have to unroot my HTC to finally update it to 4.4.3
Problem is : when i do "getvar all" with hasoon200's toolkit (i'm following TheUnlockr's method to unroot the phone correctly), the field where i should find my version-main is EMPTY, and I absolutly don't know how to find it since I'm a total beginner on android.
My info : HTC ONE (m8)
Rooted with kitkat 4.4.2 (TWRP recovery)
actual software in : 1.54.401.10
cidnum: HTC__203
By any chance , can anyone help me ? THX 3000 times in advance since i'm totally lost !
That NOTHING else appears to include installing TWRP 2.7.1.x, which is where the problem lies, I don't know how to get it back, other than to reflash the firmware... Catch 22 if you don't know what it is.
Perhaps narrow down with a search of MID, CID and radio version.
Sorry man i did not understand
Here is what i have got when I do a getvar :

FIRST: you should delete your IMEI from your post above!
Second: it is a known issue with TWRP that, after installing it version-main is no longer shown in bootloader, as already statet in this thread.
If what you wrote is correct you are on 4.4.2 with FW 1.54.401.10.
To unroot you could search for the unsupersu.zip and install it with TWRP.
After this you can download stock recovery 1.54.401.10 (assuming you data is correct and you are on the given Android version. This should enable you to receive AND install OTAs again.
The problem is, that without S-Off it is not that easy to flash the actuall FW again.

Ok you are S-Off and got 4.4.2 with ROM version 1.54.401.10 installed right!?
If so install the unsupersu.zip in TWRP and download firmware for ROM version 1.54.401.10. After you installed the unsupersu.zip reboot to bootloader and run the following commands:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip nameoffirmware.zip
DO IT AGAIN TO FLASH IT CORRECTLY!!!
fastboot flash nameoffirnware.zip
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Make sure OS is showing in Hboot. HBoot should be 3.16 and radio 1.16 if I remember correctly.
Congrats you are back to full stock. Reboot phone and check for OTA.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
The bug within TWRP has been identified, a fix has been submitted to the Gerrit of TWRP and it was also already verified and accepted.
The Next update of TWRP for the M7 and M8 should include it, if it's being build from the main tree.

This isn't even a similar issue as the OP, and this thread is 2 months old. Really shouldn't have dug up this old thread and posted to it. A different thread, or starting your own would have been more relevant.
Rooted phones still get the OTA notfication and download, they just won't install if it detects any system files have been modified.
Also, relocking the bootloader is not necessary to get the OTA or install.
Something else is going on. If you are stock ROM and stock reocvery, thre is no reason you shouldn't get and be able to install the OTA. Sometimes a factory reset will prompt the OTA to come through, for no explicable reason.

You should check around the forums to see if your specific version has had 4.4.4 rolled out. But I know most (if not all) Euro versions have been updated by now.

Your issue is no more urgent than anyone else here, that takes the time to post to an appropriate thread.
Seeking quick answers and not researching anything will always lead to more issues and maybe serious ones.
Read, learn, read.... Then do. That's the XDA spirit.
If anyone has no time for that.... Then this hobby may not be for you. ?
This has been a public service announcement.
Good morning guys.
I am wondering if anyone is able to help me before i go completely nuts trying to work this out. (I also hope its ok to make a new thread)
A few weeks ago i rooted my M8 following the steps on this website (htconeroot. - how-to-root-htc-one-m8/) with no issues at all. Unlocked the boot loader and also there is the software tag saying modified (my understanding is this is normal). Installed the custom recovery with no drama.
A couple of days ago i got the OTA notification that i can now download 5.0.1 (Happy days) however this is where i seem to be running into problems. I know that i need to revert to the stock recovery from TWRP and then from here need to relock the boot loader to install the OTA update. I think my main problem is that i don't know what version of the stock rom i need to install. I have tried a few but none of them will boot into recovery from the boot loader.
So this is where i am.

I have a swisscom locked phone (VODAP110) the software version is (3.29.166.9 from phone) however the main-version is blank, another website said i need a stock recovery (x.xx.166.x - Vodafone CH-DE (Switzerland - Germany))
The last stock recovery that i put on the phone was (3.29.161.5 recovery.img) this then would allow me to start the phone and run the OTA update. From here the phone will restart and start the update but after about 20/25% the phone will crash displaying a picture of the phone with a red triangle and upside down exclamation mark. I read somewhere that if this problem happens to erase the cache and it should fix the problem but it didn't.
Could anyone please point me in the correct direction or help me solve the problem i am having.
Do i need to ?????
1) install the correct stock recovery (if so could someone please help me find the correct version)
2) Flash the stock rom from HTCDev (no clue how to do this with fast boot and if it will restore the recovery)
3) Give up on OTA and look for a custom 5.0.1 flash and use TWRP to flash from recovery.
Thanks so much for any help.

Maybe this one works? This is the 3.29.161.9 recovery. It's from my VODAPE17 cid
1: download the ota, take out the firmware.zip and in that zip is a recovery.img. that is your correct stock recovery that you need.
2: go to the general section - collection of backups and firmwares. Have a read there and look for your cid in the list with backups.
Please do not relock the bootloader that is not needed for an ota !
And delete your serial !
I was forgotten to paste the url: https://mega.co.nz/#!nZkCWZAL!djqZnzAlVfHslzWJxUxvW5cLKHdI9BIhr_uxzjFxbng
I also have this Problem with my M8 (3.29.166.9). I also flashed the new recovery from the OTA, but when i flashed the OTA, the recovery wrote Status 7 error ...
New download of the OTA doesn't worked..
Any Idea ?

Hi onkel.
the process i went through was as follows.
1) force download the OTA from swisscom and copy off to computer.
2) do what Mr Hofs said above and extract the ROM and dig out the recovery.img
3) reset with fast boot - (fastboot reboot-bootloader)
4) flash recovery (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
5) fastboot erase cache
6) fastboot reboot
7) install OTA from within booted OS
8) wait.......
Thanks for taking the time to read through my problem guys.
@Mr Hofs if you would like the OTA update or recovery.mg please let me know.

Mr Hofs, You absolute legend. This was a very quick fix (No. 1) back up and running now.
Hi onkel.
the process i went through was as follows.
1) force download the OTA from swisscom and copy off to computer.
2) do what Mr Hofs said above and extract the ROM and dig out the recovery.img
3) reset with fast boot - (fastboot reboot-bootloader)
4) flash recovery (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
5) fastboot erase cache
6) fastboot reboot
7) install OTA from within booted OS
8) wait.......

Back to stock problem
Hello,i have a similar problem. I did everthing as you, rooted, custom recovery and unlock bootloader on htcdev, all to try out custom roms like arhd and so on. But i didn't do a nandroid backup, because i'm a fool and didn't know what i was doing. When i wanted to go back to stock i tried flashing 3.29.161.9 as it's similar to our stock rom but had no luck, still no updates. When i go to fastboot my os says os-3.29.166.9,so clearly there lies i problem. i need i stock 3.29.166.9 nandroid backup so i can go to stock. i've downloaded the recovery you uploaded and put it in 3.29.161.9 rom but no luck. So can you please upload a 3.29.166.9 nandrod backup. Thanks in advance. And mister Petert87 and Mr Hofs if you have any idea how to solve my problem please tell can you tell me. Cheers guys

Are you running a rooted stock ROM when your phone now not working ? If yes, can you install TWRP recovery and make backup of the system part only. Then upload it for me, I'll try to fix it. I've done this many times with other rare ROM like WIND, Taiwan version, Optus, Telstra and many more.
If possible, just PM me the link.. this is the only way that I can help you and @dexterts

No. I don't have because I can't find any version nandroid for x.xx.166.x anywhere out of XDA
That's why I'm asking these guys to help them
And if that @raynordg guy respond to notification ... he can help too. He was scared about his data on nandroid backup ... system partition has no user data.

Yes ... change CID and flash EU WWE RUU if you want it on .401
If only firmware, you can restore a EU WWE backup and do OTA .. but for now only lollipop the latest and there's already lollipop RUU, you can check EddyOS thread for RUU method : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735235
Hi,
My phone got the red triangle and exclamation mark after upgrading my firmware. I believe this was due to it wiping the custom recovery which was TWRP. I have tried to reinstall TWERP but I get stuck on the entering recovery screen.
I have tried to install twrp a couple of times with no joy but I have a copy of philz recovery and this installed 1st time.
Any ideas? I have tried clearing the cache in fastboot but am stuck.
I have no phone as the rom I install is on the ext sd card and Philz touch will not mount the ext sd card.
Thanks in advance

You reverted to stock recovery, which flashing firmware will always do, unless its a modded firmware which has the stock recovery removed.
Confirm that your bootloader is UNLOCKED (which is needs to be to flash recovery).
Also, if you update to Lollipop firmware (which is usually the reason for updating firmware) you need to use one of the more recent TWRP versions. I recommend TWRP 2.8.7.
Older TWRP versions do not work on LP, and fail to install properly is the mode of failure. Similarly, Philz does not work on LP.
EDIT: To clarify TWRP build.
I have checked and the bootloader is unlocked, s-off and super cid.
The problem is I cannot get twrp to load up. I install it with fasboot and all goes well but when I try to get into recovery it just stays on the entering recovery screen.
I have tried to reinstall the latest firmare using the'Firmware Flashing without the panic attacks' guide as I have always used and this seems to install ok and then tried to install twrp again ( I have tried the latest and the previous copy) but no joy. I can though install philz recovery and that boots up fine.
So still stuck trying to get twrp installed.
Also if I reboot the phone hangs while starting upon the htc screen with red text but the phone is actually working behind this, just cant see the normal desktop/startup screen. If i hold the power button so the screen goes off and the hold the power button to turn it on the screen comes to life.
For information, I am on Android HD 41.0 as this is the only rom I had on the internal sd

Your firmware flash never properly "stuck".
Your getvar data indicates you are on the original version firmware (1.54) which is over a year old. The current firmware would have updated you to hboot 3.19, radio 1.2xxx, and main version 4.16.401.
This also explains why Philz works, and the current versions of TWRP do not work. The current TWRP versions only work on Lollipop firmware; and only older TWRP versions work with your 3.16 firmware.
Try running the 4.16.401 firmware twice, this is often necessary to get it to flash properly. Then once you've confirmed you are on hboot 4.16, radio 1.2xxx, main version 4.16.401, then try TWRP 2.8.7.

True, a few of the recent builds will work on LP. But older ones than that won't work, trust me. I forget the breakoff point exactly, which is why I recommended the most current version (2.8.7). And once the most current version is known to be stablen (which 2.8.7 is), its usually the best recommendation.
I didn't mean to state that 2.8.7 is the only version that works. But I see how it can be interpreted that way (and have edited the previous post for clarity). For some reason, I constantly see folks still trying to flash much older TWRP builds (2.7 or so) onto Lollipop (which won't work).
And it turns out the OP had the opposite issue (trying to flash newer version TWRP on really old firmware hboot 3.16).
Thank you, I will try and flash the firmware again. Have you a link for this. I have been getting it from the ARHD Firmware page but not sure if its corrupt.

4.15.401 (Euro) firmware is probably the most commonly downloaded and installed firmware from that collection. So it should be fine.
You probably just flashed the firmware once; when twice is often needed.
I managed to get the updated firmware on my phone eventually. I had to download from another link and it flashed first time.
Twrp installed straightaway and I am back on S.Rom.
Thank you for all your help, much appreciated

Hi,
Having issues trying to put SuperSU on my M8. Heres what I've done:
- Unlocked bootloader
- Fastbooted TWRP on the phone
- Tried Flashing the ROM, says No OS installed. Rebooting stops at Android screen
- Tried downloading RUU and going back to stock, however the RUU tells me that there's an error and it can't continue.
- Tried switching between TWRP and CWM.
- Tried sideloading from my pc with a few different versions of SuperSU
Nothing seems to work.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
If there's any more information you would like me to provide, just let me know.
Thanks Again,
Nick

Having issues trying to put SuperSU on my M8. Are you trying to root the stock ROM, or flash a custom ROM? Because they are 2 different things, with different approaches. And your steps described below contradict each other on this matter..
Heres what I've done:
- Unlocked bootloader
- Fastbooted TWRP on the phone What version TWRP?
- Tried Flashing the ROM, says No OS installed. Rebooting stops at Android screen Which ROM exactly? Did you try another ROM? Did the ROM install properly (any error messages in TWRP when you flashed?
- Tried downloading RUU and going back to stock, however the RUU tells me that there's an error and it can't continue. What RUU (exact file name)? What was the error message and error number? These are important, as they tell you why the RUU failed.
- Tried switching between TWRP and CWM. Not recommended. CWM hasn't been updated in a long time, and can cause some problems in itself.
- Tried sideloading from my pc with a few different versions of SuperSU If you have no OS, flashing SuperSU isn't going to help matters.

Additonally, do fastboot getvar all, so we can see more info about the phone. Delete IMEI and serial number before posting.
Are you trying to root the stock ROM, or flash a custom ROM?
Originally I tried to put SuperSU2.37 on there, that didn't work, so I tried SuperSU2.77, which failed. I then tried to RUU to stock, which I'm having issues with also.
- What version TWRP?
3.0.2-0
- Any error messages in TWRP when you flashed?
It doesn't show any errors. After it's finished it says No OS Installed, are you sure you want to reboot?
- What RUU (exact file name)?
RUU_M8_UL_M60_SENSE70_MR_BrightstarUS_WWE_6.12.1540.4.exe
Error 155
Please get the correct RUU and try again.

SuperSU version 2.37 is really old. Not sure how you even came about it (old toolkit maybe?), that version probably wouldn't work on Lollipop, much less your current Marshmallow firmware.
SuperSU 2.77 should be okay, its current and updated for MM. I might suggest the latest "STABLE" version, which is 2.76 from here. But honestly, they are all pretty stable from what I've seen, and it probably wouldn't make a huge difference wither way (the version 2.77 should be ok). And it seems like the main problem is that we need to solve the "No OS" issue before proceeding.

My guess, is that you did something to delete the OS, that maybe you missed when listing the steps you did. Since, I can't see how OS could be wiped/missing with what you indicated. At least up until you tried RUU, since if you relocked the bootloader to RUU (which is a requirement unless you have s-off), that wipes the OS (so maybe you just have the order of steps you tried, mixed up?).

That RUU isn't for your version. Maybe the "WWE" in the file name has you confused, but its actually for the US Developer's Edition. What you need would have version number with "401" instead of "1540", but you would only know that from experience or reading it somewhere on the forums.
You should be able to use the following RUU (zip format, not exe - so follow the instructions to flash): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64926626&postcount=6
Alternately, restore the stock TWRP backup 6.12.401.4 using the file and instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
Not sure whether your bootloader is currently relocked or unlocked, as you haven't indicated, either way. It needs to be relocked to RUU, or alternately it needs to be unlocked to do the TWRP stock backup method.

Need help please!
I was updating my fone to marshmallow and it is now stuck in bootloop. But I will explain what I was up to before that.
I decided to try and start the process of unlocking boot loader, rooting, and then was then going to install a custom rom, etc.
I had success in unlocking the bootloader and after the factory reset was performed I thought hey maybe I should run this OTA update before I go any further and thats were Im at now stuck in bootloop. The update got as far as starting apps and just was stuck at that. I tried the RUU for HTC One m8 unlock/developer but it came up with identicafation error, maybe there is a RUU better suited to my fone?
The phone is european Branded to EE but ulocked to any network and as I said the bootloader is unlocked.

You found a backup but you don't read how-to that come with the thread.
It's not a flashable zip, you need to extract the backup and use TWRP to restore.
Why don't you try restore the 6.12.61.4 backup since the firmware is already updated to 6.12.61.4 ?

when trying to update to 6.12.61.4 OTA again it is stuck in bootloop, will not got past the "starting android' white box on first boot.
could the bootloader being unlocked be the cause of this, though I have read in the totorial linked that the bootloader being unlocked will not matter.
should I just go straight in for a custom ROM, which would be smoothest and most reliable.
Thanks again
I've seen a few cases like yours but I don't see any way to fix it.
Since your firmware is already updated, yes you can try custom ROM and see how it goes.
I can't recommend any as I tested only 2 or 3 custom ROM (sense & gpe based). For now I'm on Oreo 8.1 custom LineageOS 15.1
Just select any that you like to try and try it.

Is going about installing a Custom ROM the same as what I have been doing, will this work ?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/development/rom-resurrection-remix-v5-8-0-t3507210/page101
Do I need to place other files in with this ROM as when Trying to restore using TWRP it does not give the option of which partitions to restore to. Don't want to go ahead incase I damage the phone completly!
Thanks.
Restoring a twrp backup - select restore (different when it comes to rom zip)
Custom ROM zip need to be installed, not restore. So use install menu and select rom zip and install. Also need to wipe using wipe menu before install rom.
Its' still not happening for me, installed 'Android Revolution HD 51.3 6.12.401.4_R' and still gets stuck at 'android is starting, starting apps'.
I am really up for trying any other other suggestions, after all I'm learning a little as I go. what about android 7?
*edit*
If I was to try and install android 7 version of the build tried previous do I have to remove all other firmware and completely wipe?

What do you mean "build tried previous"? Try to refer to specific ROM names, not vague terms that can lead to confusion and mistakes.
You don't need to do anything to firmware to install a Nougat ROM (Android 7). But you definitely need to do a full wipe, which means the default wipe option in TWRP (wipe cache, Dalvik, and user data).

You don't need to do anything to firmware to install a Nougat ROM (Android 7). But you definitely need to do a full wipe, which means the default wipe option in TWRP (wipe cache, Dalvik, and user data).

I was referring to the 'Android Revolution HD 51.3 6.12.401.4_R' when I said "build tried previous".
Going to try the the Nougat Rom now, hopefully its a sucess.
thanks for the advice.
Just an updated to were I'm at now,
I managed to get 'RESURRECTION REMIX v5.8.5 [Final Build][Android 7.1.2 Nougat][09/26/17' up and running on my M8 but chrome crashes when I try and load a web page, the camera don't work at all and crashes and sound does not work for ringtone, alarm etc.
Has anyone else had these same symptoms.
Thanks
