try to root google pixel C android 7.1.2 - Pixel C Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all sorry for my english !
I would like to root my pixel C runing on android 7.1.2 but i did not find any tuto even on french forums !
On youtube I saw tuto for root with magisk but i need a TWRP recovery and if want to install a TWRP recovery i need root acces ! Completely lost .
I just bought the cable ( usb type C to usb ) only for root .
I also tried wugfresh but the last version to root is for android 7.1.1 .
Thanks to you if you could help me I just past two days looking for a solution.

having the same problem. picked up my pixel c yesterday and didn't think about root/twrp before applying all the updates.
I'm sure a solution will come up. I Have seen some people that have said they are running root/TWRP on 7.1.2 so it is possible.
We just may have to downgrade via fastboot image from google? I'll be looking into it

Heres a start:
https://developers.google.com/android/images
I'm going to flash the latest version supported in Wugfresh NRT.

I also allowed the device to apply all of the OTA updates and could not load TWRP.
I had to flash the factory image 7.1.1 (N4F26T, Mar 2017)
I was then able to the Nexus Root Toolkit to fastboot flash TWRP and root the device.
I'd like to go to 7.1.2 (N2G47W, Jun 2017) but I don't want to lose root.

If you've flashed TWRP, any reason to not use PureNexus (or any other custom ROM) to get on 7.1.2?

SWR50 - Flashed stock to fix OTA update problem, now bigger problem.

I have rooted my SWR50 previously and was trying to reflash stock in order to upgrade to 5.1.1, When I ran into the problem that lots of people have had with flashing stock. I don't know why, but when I tried installing STOCK LWX48P with 5.0.1, It said it was expecting different test keys than what was on my system. It needed tetra KNX01V 4.4.2 or tetra LWX48P 5.0.2, and it said I have omni_tetra 5.0.2 LRX22G which it is not compatible. I have tried many things and flashed quite a few "stock" roms and bootloaders for my smartwatch trying to get it back to stock, and it is possible one of the things I flashed was wrong for my system. I tried this same method with STOCK LWX48P 5.0.2 and 5.1.1 (5.1.1 being the update I'm trying to install in the first place). I had an idea to install KNX01V being the base firmware that the later firmwares build and patch off of, but I can't find a working download. If you have any ideas to fix my problem it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
P.S. - Just wanted to note that I did read http://forum.xda-developers.com/smartwatch-3/help/wrong-test-keys-ota-update-failed-t3186118, and still had the same problem because rollback didn't work either and the Sony Update Companion says there is no update for my smartwatch when I tried .

You will have to reinstall to complete Stock (see link below). You can not OTA from a customer rom.

If you already did update to Nougat via OTA, flashing that Marshmallow stock image can/will brick your device.
There is a generic RETAIL Nougat Stock image for the April Security Updates flying around somewhere. But generally you should install the stock version you originally had on your device, and then update from there.

I have no idea in what channel a phone will end up with the generic RETAIL images. I just did a dump of every single partition on my phone before I installed custom stuff, so I can always get back to how it was originally, and OTA from there.

I can not say it enough... I really wish people would first learn how to correct their phones before they make the changes.
It really is simple, would you learn how to properly parachute before or after you jump from the plane?

No problem... any time you change a phone I always suggest to really look at the Guides and Discussion section and get to know the phone well before jumping in and hacking it.. Plus Moto did not make this one as simple to flash and recover as some of their others.
Good Luck.

As far as I Moto has not released any signed firmware for the Addison.
Just flash this with RSD lite and you`ll have 7.1.1 with aug patch )

Flashing that on my reteu device resulted in a bootloop with the phone playing the "Hello Moto" sound over and over again.
I could flash LineageOS over it and it worked fine, but it did not give me a working stock OS.

You can try to do next:
1. Wipe everything (incl internal storage with TWRP)
2. Format (not wipe) data with TWRP
3. Go to fastboot and flash stock ROM with RSD lite
P.S. If you still have bootloop - just flash TWRP and SuperSU with it. But if you`ll do everything, what i wrote - You`ll have fully worked device.
Good luck )

Step 3 is what I did originally, including erasing userdata. With that exact stock ROM.
I only wanted to update the bootloader and radio firmware, so I don't overly care it does not boot by itself, as I'm using LaOS.
Just as a note for anyone trying to use that image.

Google Edition Pixel XL questions about unlocked bootloader, twrp, and Magisk???

Hi Everyone,
I have a Google Edition Pixel XL with unlocked bootloader, TWRP installed, as well as Magisk 16.0 installed. I would like to know the steps in layman's terms for what is needed to install OTA and keeping data? Then what are the next steps if any to do about keeping the bootloader unlocked, and being able to use TWRP, as well as Magisk to have root?
I have not attempted to updated OTA since I have unlocked the bootloader. I just do not want to lose anything.
Apologies for a newbie question and forgive me for asking for a little handholding

My concern is an unlocked bootloader is an attack vector right? Why can't I relock with TWRP/Magisk? My thought is crossing a border tbh. I'm not doing anything, but don't want my device rootkit-ed if they decide they need to investigate it for whatever reason.

You did say you wanted to keep your data, didn't you?
Oh, and the whole being unable to boot thing, since you won't be stock.

No I didn't really. And no one is clarifying WHY it won't boot... My best guess from what I read is signing? And I'd further guess that said signing must be done by Google not TWRP? Any way TWRP can protect against 3rd party mods by someone with my device to read my data/install stuff?

Upgrade rooted 2015 16gb Shield TV (non Pro)

Hi
I have a 2015 Shield (non pro) currently running rooted 5.2.0. I am looking to update it with the latest 8.0.1 dev image to keep root. Is there any precautions or extra steps I need to take over what is in the instructions in the download centre. From what I have read I will need to ADB sideload Magisk to get full root access after installing the dev image.
you'll need to patch the boot.img in magisk canary and then flash it
https://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/general/guide-root-nvidia-shield-experience-t3882254
Do I need to unroot or factory reset the rooted 5.2.0 before flashing 8.0.1. Is there any benefit in flashing the dev image rather than the factory image before flashing the patched boot.img.
You should update the firmware OTA. Because you'll flash the OTA you'll need to patch then flash the dev image or this root boot image: https://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/development/kernel-overclock-kernel-2-22-ghz-t3943079
But do I need to unroot etc to do an OTA.

yes unroot will happen automatically when you install the OTA. if you know how to use adb and follow my steps it's not a big deal though you can get it back quickly
I have just unfroze system upgrade (com.nvidia.ota) and it offers experience 6.3. I guess I have to incrementally install subsequent OTA's until I get to 8.0.1 then follow your guide to re-root using your guide, I am familiar with using ADB although its been quite a while since I last used it.

yes correct you need to do it incrementally--it's totally worth it Nvidia has done some great upgrades!
Got it up to 8.0.0 installing the OTA's. However the next OTA offered is 8.0.2 rather than 8.0.1 which as far as I know has no root options yet as the 8.0.2 images have not been released by NV.
yes but you don't need dev images to root, you can just patch this boot.img and it should give you root (as long as you install the latest Magisk canary and then upgrade through that)

False double post please ignore.
Just a little confused as to which boot.img I need to patch. Looked at the XDA link you posted but there are quite a few different ones mentioned in that thread. I am currently running stock 8.0.2 OTA on my 2015 16gb.

Just boot into twrp using this https://drive.google.com/file/d/1934405D1S0lv52jZMqS-Zny62RIzGWSi/view
Then flash magisk canary in there, and you are done
Thanks! Flashed the latest canary and now rooted on 8.0.2.

[HELP] How do I root my XT1952-1 (Android 9)

Hi everyone ,
I wandered for months in this forum but I didn't really find how to root my device. There are some tutorial for the "1952-4" but it's not my device. I really don't want to do risky things flashing wrong files. At this point I don't even know if my model can be rooted.
Here are useful infos :
Device : Moto G7 Play XT1952-1
Firmware : Android 9 (security patch december, 1st 2018)
Build : PPY29.68-28
Bootloader unlocked : YES
At this point, what am I supposed to do ? Is there a TWRP image that would work for sure ?
Thank you.
I managed to root my xt1952-4 but I couldn't use the methods on here as I would have TWRP and Magisk root but would lose wifi. So I decided to install magisk, extract the Boot.img file from the rom and patch it with magisk. I flashed it back using "fastboot flash boot boot.img" and now I have root and working wifi but no recovery.

Interesting, thanks.
I don't know if I can risk doing that on my XT1952-1 though, you never know how it'd behave.
If somebody successfully rooted XT1952-1, please let me know
