I've got the notification for a system update but it won't download without being connected to either wifi or a pass-through internet connection. Is there any way round this?
Thanks
Andy
I've scanned a lot of posts and tried many things but can't get tethering to work on my Verizon phone with jellybean 4.2.2.
Here is my latest attempt. I rooted phone with saferoot. didn't touch the recovery system i.e. its stock. Installed wifi tether trevi mod.
In wifi tether settings:
- Device Profile > Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
- Setup Method > Netd-Mcd (master)
- checked 'Send Netd Max Client Cmd'
- checked 'WiFi-driver reload 2'
- checked 'MSS clamping'.
- checked 'Routing fix'.
When I try to activate tethering I get "Tethering started with errors! please check show log.".
When i click show log i get message "Unable to open log file. File does not exist"
Is this an old solution which no longer works? If this won't work for my phone can someone suggest other ways of getting tethering to work?
Thanks for any help.

Sorry, could you expand on that a little please. Exactly how does upgrading to kitkat help me?
Will it make the solution i tried work? Will it make some other tethering solution workable?
I don't want to upgrade for the sake of upgrading. I'm good with jellybean unless its preventing
tethering from working.
Thanks.
Hello everyone,
I've just received the notification for the OTA (with the december security patch and the KRACK patch) but I can only download it via WIFI (even though I've got plenty of data on my plan...)
On my previous phones (Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Lenovo P2), I was able to force the download via mobile data. Am I going crazy or is it a new google policy? Is it any way to circumvent this restriction?
Thank you for your help.
PS: I'm still disapointed that this OTA isn't OREO, but at least we get security patches, yeay!!
You are not going crazy and it's not really new.
I do not know of a way to force it over cellular service.
I don't how you guys are facing this issue, for me I always get the option to download OTA via 1- only WiFi 2-WiFi or Mobile Data. i always use option 2 and download ota with mobile data.

Perhaps is a carrier or data plan difference.
updated to pie. rooted with magisk. checked tethering and it failed. tried the build.prop edit to bypass and no go. anyone else experience this?
EDIT: fixed. Had to update magisk to v16.7 on beta channel so it would root Pie properly.

Glad you got it fixed, but this isn't the correct forum to ask questions. Please ask in the Q&A Section

Do you have the tethering zip file you could share? I cannot find it in the store and I need tether.

This is the last version I have.
When you say 'tried the build.prop edit to bypass', are you referring to adding 'net.tethering.noprovisioning=true' to the build.prop file? Was it the same procedure that was described in this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/root-guide-native-hotspot-t3493286 ?
I upgraded to Android 9 Pie this morning and lost tethering, so I just wanted to check if you have verified that this works on Pie before going through the procedure again. Thank you!
Hey. Just saw this, and am on a Google pixel with pie, and have no problem tethering, as I discovered a homerun of a fix, provided you have root.
Just download VPN hotspot (by mygod), VPN tether (by jarvanh) and a VPN (I use the one with the bears in the tunnel). Turn the VPN on, then enter VPN hotspot. Toggle hotspot IN THE APP ONLY, return and enable the wlan0 option that will appear after hotspot engages. Then, open VPN tether, toggle on, and Viola! Endless hotspot. It will be viewable on your data usage only under the app title of your VPN, and thus as unlimited as any other usage.
As with all things, however, there's a drawback, which is excessive battery drain. But it definitely works and can be done, for free, and without a build prop tweak, as I haven't bothered working it in anymore, because I am positive it doesn't matter. But, if you wanted to stick with the prop tweak, add it to your /default.prop as well as /system/build.prop and then in a terminal (as root) enter "setprop net.tethering.noprovisioning true"
Which can be verified with the command "getprop net.tethering.noprovisioning".
Hopefully you enjoy.
So I came here looking for some help, I was on YouTube and saw a video from a YouTuber named ETA Prime about a moto g fast and how I let would be perfect for a android emulator device that was 89$. What he didn't say was that you would at some point need to activate it cause a little popup from CDM would tell you that you haven't activated your device yet. I am now rooted and have used apps to freeze/uninstall certain apps only to be met with a "failed to uninstall" message. I don't know what to do all I want to do is use it for games. I assume my last resort is to flash a custom rom..if that's a case what does everyone recommend?
Flash stock firmware did it for me. Still can't activate it but the annoying Boost garbage is gone. I was also able to stop it from alerting me that there is no sim card in the device.
Do you mean were not able to activate due to you flashing a stock rom? Are you able to use wifi?
