Galaxy A3 poor battery life - Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, A7 (2017) Questions & Answe

Greetings all. I have a major issue with my A3's (2017) battery and it seems like many people are having the same issue. Despite the number of users experiencing this, there are no solid solutions to be found anywhere. I've tried absolutely everything; from changing my WiFi settings to disabling almost every built-in app. Even when the screen is off my battery drains at almost 5% an hour, regardless of whether AOD is turned on or off. It doesn't seem to make a difference whether I'm using WiFi or HSDPA either.
I'm unable to post any links, so no screenshots unfortunately. Android OS is utilising 24% and screen is at 18%. My battery usage graph is at a 45° angle: Not the nice, relatively flat line that you would expect to see.
If anyone could shed some light on this for me I would greatly appreciate it, as I'm on the verge of smashing this POS with a 4 pound hammer.

It almost sounds like it's something wakes up the phone a lot during deepsleep or something.
Try to install wakelock detector from play. Maybe it can give a hint of what's draining the battery.

Try use Gsam for identify your problem.

I'm having the same problem and i think it's becuse of the new update i installed recently. On the January build(with the January security patches) I had way better battery life. Attached a screenshot so you can see the new build number. Do you think if I revert to the old firmware this will be fixed?

I also thought of that but unfortunately I haven't rooted it yet because it's still fairly new and I'm not sure if I may have to return it or not. I might just have to root so I can try get to the bottom of it.

Ok so I installed GSAM and it's reporting that my screen is using 61%, even though my screen brightness is set to almost as low as it can go. It's used 18 percent in just over 2 hours. Can you confirm if this is normal? Also I noticed that Android OS stay awake is at over 11 hours. Seems a bit much to me. I'm thinking I should just root it so I can do some proper diagnostics.
Thanks for your help guys.

If you do not mind losing the warranty, do root. But I would first make the factory reset and have done testing without installing any other applications.

1) factory reset device
2) drain battery till 0%
3) charge it to 100%
4) Use sleep/doze mode for apps
5) Use power saving (mid/high)

Weird Battery Stats

Hello XDA,
Been noticing bad battery performance on my device, only to find out that the problem might not be the battery itself.
Here are 2 screenshots that easily show the problem imgur.com/a/DMtGo
Basically, my phone was on sleep for several hours, turning the screen on 4 or 5 times just to check for notifications. I went to the power management, saw the graph steady while it was on sleep mode (battery at 64%), then in 50 seconds, 10% disappeared as shown in the second picture. Can somebody tell me what could be the root cause of this? I'd highly appreciate it
note: I took screenshots because i noticed the issue before, good thing is that i was able to replicate it.
The battery stats don't always update when the phone is asleep. This has been mentioned by others.

Thanks for this, but my friend gets around 3.5h of screen time, i only get 2h. We have the same phones with similar serial numbers. We both have 3G always on (except when there is wifi) and both use auto-brightness.
Can you please guide me on how to diagnose? I have Carat and it isn't reporting anything suspicious.

Oh, you didn't mention this in your first post.
Both having auto brightness is hardly a fair test, maybe he uses his in darkened rooms and you use yours in direct sun.
I notice your phone signal is bad, which could cause battery drain.
I used to get about 3 hours use, auto brightness in darkened rooms, WiFi and data always on. My soft buttons died, sent for repair and now I get 4 hours with similar usage. They said they replaced screen, but they also replaced the case. Have no idea if they replaced the battery. Both phones arrived with an empty battery, but I suspect the first one was empty for longer which may have damaged it.

How can i check for the battery health? I mean actual health percentage of what it should ideally be.

draining battery fast.

First two days I had the phone it had great battery. I was getting 16-18 hours of life with 4-6 sot. Now the last two days at work it's worse than my op2. By the time I got home yesterday I was at like 35%. Previous days I was well over 60.My android system is taking most of the blame. On my good days it was at like 8% when the phone would die. Right now with my phone at 79% it's already at the top with 5%. I've barely used the phone while I'm at work right now. It's been unplugged for 3 hours and my sot is 35 minutes. Not sure if it's got something to do with the ambient display. Maybe finger print scanner. Any one have ideas?

Humm I thought it was the other way around. Nevertheless I have WiFi at work. Can't remember if I was on it though. I'll have to test that out.
You don't have to run a custom rom or loose dash charge cause your rooted. I'm still using stock oxygen 3.1.3,and have the basic functions like dash charge working. I'm not sure if you have to be rooted to use gsm, cause I'm always rooted, but it may gave you more specific insight as to what exactly is draining your battery quickly.

You know the image you attached, with the graph on it? Tap that and check the Awake heading. Is it one long solid blue bar? If yes: your phone stays awake (doesn't go in deep sleep mode). Does restarting it make a difference (i.e. does the solid blue bar get broken up)?
The problem emerged on my OP3 as well yesterday AND I had it on my prevous phone (a OPO). On the OPO the problem was that it wouldn't release a wakelock that kicked in during charging. While I haven't explored the problem on my new OP3 enough to know if this is the same problem, here's what fixed it for me if the problem is indeed charger related: when charged to your liking turn off your phone with the charging cable still in. Once turned off, remove the cable and restart the phone.

I'll have to check that out. I'll root today. Just haven't had a need with the OP3 I'm digging this version of oxygen and not missing any of my root abilities. Also I use android pay. But I guess I can live without it lol

Are you talking about under history details? I'll check tonight once my phone is drained. I did a battery cycle yesterday. Let it die and charged to 100 while it was off. We'll see how it goes today. And your saying it was an actual charger problem?
Heavy battery drain might have to do with the "pocket problem". The fingerprint sensor constantly activates and is not properly blocked by the proximity sensor.
There are several threads and posts about it, here and on the oneplus forums...

Yea I had that once in a while with my op2 I'd take the phone out of my pocket and it would say too many attempts at the scanner. Nothing on this phone like that though. And of course today is a different story with the battery lol its good today. So maybe it's while I'm at work. Idk it's odd. I need some more testing. Currently I'm at 9.5 hours on battery with 56% left and almost 3 hours sot. I'll see how this week goes at work and see if I can diagnose anything
I've been having this problem as well, losing as much as up to 20% of battery overnight, while it was doing absolutely nothing. I've tried a couple of things, but last night it 'only' drained 5%, betterbatterystats reports 0.6% of drainage per hour.
I think this is due to the weather option in the launcher, could anyone else try turning it off and see if battery life improves significantly?

You don't even need to do that. You can just check it after an hour or even less. Just put the phone away for an hour with the screen off and check history details.

Not quite. I'm saying it was a wakelock that kicked in during charging and that wasn't released when I took the phone off the charger. I don't know if it was the charger caused the wakelock.
Great for two days now I'm leaving work with 45% battery and only an hour and a half sot. Unplugged for 9 hours. Idk I feel like it's hit or miss

Lineage OS battery drain

Hi!
I've been running Lineage OS for about a week now and I'm experiencing poor battery life. I get around 2 hours of screen-on-time and I'm not doing anything demanding other than browsing and social networking and I have the settings on Efficient in the power menu. I feel like stock was a good 50% better on battery life than LOS.
I also noticed that LineageOS System, Android OS and the Phone Idle processes eat up around 30% of the battery.
I didn't install any battery draining apps and I'm running the latest version of everything.
I tried reseting app preferences but it didn't help.
I also want to note that standby time is amazing. If I don't use the device the battery level stays the same while it's sleeping. When I wake it, it loses 2-3% immediately though. It seems that it only loses battery quickly when the screen is on.
Can someone please help? Is this normal battery life on LOS?

if you want more battery life you can use Greenify or something like that. It is stopping the background apps. This is a alternative way. Hope you find your solution

Ah ok have a good career w/ android.. bye
Hey.
I'm using the latest LineageOS same as you, on my LG G2 D802 32GB and having the same issue as you. If I leave my phone on table for a night, it usually drains 1 or 2%, but if I start using facebook or facebook messenger, or just browsing the system settigs, or just ANYTHING, the battery percentage suddenly starts to count down, like 1% every minute or so.
So i've tried stock LineageOS kernel and Lambda kernel aswell (most advanced, latest kernel for G2 atm), rooting and using Greenify, turning everything down to minimal, underclocking GPU and CPU frequencies, changing govenors, battery saving modes on, screenbrightness to minimal without adaptive, everything syncing off, bluetooth, gps, and wifi is usually off, but nothing really helped and it's been buggering me for a week. Compared to the Stock 4.4.2 or 5.0.2, the battery is half as good. Also, I've been reading posts and I've noticed that not everybody have this issue, because some people experience really good battery - or they just say that -, on the same phone modell. I've been thinking about reverting back to stock because of that, but I havent given custom roms like (crDroid or AICP, I'm torn between those two) a shot, but that not relevant to you because G3.
If I find a solution I'll let you know.
LineageOS doesn't have any battery draining bugs for me currently. Have you installed a custom kernel?
G3 D855 user here. Can confirm the same issue, with all nightlies I have used so far. Standby is OK, but it still drains faster than stock. When I use the phone though, that's when it begins to go down waaay too fast. One percent per minute or two tops, certainly at least 2x faster rate. Tried to solve it in many different ways, so far to no avail. Asked some people with D855 and lineage too and they had no issue. It's a mystery to me (btw I bought a new battery just recently)
Second that, same D855 with latest baseband 21C, i encounter same bizarre battery drain..

I'm glad I'm not alone then!
Same problem as everyone else.
Overnight lose only 1% per hour but using the phone it drains extremely quickly.
Look at this crazy battery history:
I've never had this issue on my other devices running CyanogenMod in the past.
Has anyone tracked this issue down to something in particular?
Phew, its not just me. Stock LOS nightlies, pick any... same issue as described by everyone above.
D855/32Gb etc and can not shake it. Wakelocks are all good, as meant to be, just screen on seems to destroy the battery. Have screen on adaptive brightness with around 50% brightness on slider in the first place.
Something is not quite right. Love every other aspect of LOS apart from the battery drainage.
I've got the issue too. I don'y know why but it starts to drain the battery quite fast during the usage of the phone. Any help will be appreciated.
I don't see an open bug unless anyone else has seen one:
https://jira.lineageos.org/browse/BUGBASH-167?jql=text ~ "G3"
https://jira.lineageos.org/browse/BUGBASH-17?jql=text ~ "D855"
There's also this bug:
https://jira.lineageos.org/browse/BUGBASH-364?jql=text ~ "battery"
which is similar to what happens to me, i.e. get to 30% and then suddenly shutdown.
I think this is the bug:
https://jira.lineageos.org/browse/REGRESSION-372
Clear caches!
I was having this issue, with Lineage OS as well as some others i tried based off CM. I would get better than stock battery life for a few weeks, then suddenly the battery would start draining in a few hours.
Booting to recovery and clearing all caches fixed this issue for me.

This is a hardware issue with the battery, not a software one. You need to replace your battery with an official one from a reputable source (careful, there are quite a lot of fakes around, so don't be tempted by saving a dollar).

I had already tried this but no luck.
Could you please check your battery stats?
Does the percentage used equal the total of the individual apps?
In my case, it never does, e.g. 15% usage but only 3% used by apps.

Same for me - the numbers never add up. When this occours, I can watch the battery go from fully charged to 30% in an hour or two, but the battery usage meter doesn't show anything like that kind of usage.
I'd post a screenshot, but I've just taken my phone off charge and have no data as yet. I'll post one tonight - but since clearing the caches, mine is behaving at the moment, although I'm not getting the same all-day battery I was 6 weeks ago.
Same here
Also experiencing this issue on my 6P. Lineage OS system consumes the largest portion of my battery and I usually only get 1hr 50 minutes max of screen time. The phone also seems to die at minimum of 24 percent. Just shuts off. I no longer think this is a hardware issue either as other people seem to be experiencing this. (On a somewhat unrelated note, I also can't flash SuperSU in TWRP without it going into a LOS bootloop)

Screen drains battery

Hello,
my gf has Nexus 5X and has been complaining about her battery dying way too fast. I didnt find any apps draining the battery or anything that would unnecessarily keep the phone awake. The thing I found though was that the screen uses 60-70% of battery in a bit over 2 hours of screen on time. She has her brightness set as low as possible while being able to read what its on the screen actually.
This has been going on through multiple versions of android, I tried a clean install couple weeks ago but that didnt help either. The battery health is also good.
Does anyone have the same experience with it or a solution to this?

Hi! I've noticed that display brightness causes some heat in the phone, specially in the camera area. So I decided to control brightness and phone temperature with Velis Auto Brightness (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.velis.auto.brightness&hl=es_419). This app helped me control temperature and thus battery. You can try and tell me! Good luck! :fingers-crossed:

S20 serious battery drain issue

My s20 Exynos is draining 1 percentage battery every 3 minutes when screen is on. Location , bluetooth, aod and all are off including Bixby. I'm using single sim and signal is very good. Using wifi for data. Can't understand what is causing battery drain.
Is my battery fault? I purchased just 2 weeks ago and it's really frustrating me.
Thanks a lot for your list. I'm going to do factory reset and check how it improves. Its a big pain moving all files to pc and copying back. I'll update my status in some days sure. My sot is very bad now, getting 3 hours only

For the moment it's normal let the phone learn your habits and your usage do the update and do 2 or 3 full cycle charge (20 to 100%) after that it will be good if not you can ask a replacement because you have a damaged product

I had similar issue on my S 20 Ultra but even worse. After update to One UI 2.5 I had huge battery drain, overheating, can not even reach 120hz and had lags every 10 secconds no matter what I was doing.
I tried to: Wipe cache did not help, new function apps optimizer did not help, restart did not help.
I found that new "design" Edge panel ate approx 8% of battery over the night so I disabled it ,restarted my phone and everything went back to normal.
I never had such a problems with any phone in the past. This is embarrassing!
Hope this will work for you too!
May I know how did you know edge panel took 8%?
Because battery care does not show system apps power consumption. Accubattery and gsm battery also did not show system apps power consumption.
I struck on finding which one is causing this huge power consumption.

settings -> device care -> battery -> battery usage-> edge screen
edge panel is a part of edge screen "app" which I can normaly see in the list.
I've checked it. It shows only 1% was used for edge screen. Samsung has hidden the feature of showing system usage like screen , wifi, cell radio signals etc.
Why the hell they did this. If it is available we can easily find which one is causing issue
Any ideas?
Try running med power saving as a test, see what your drain is then.
What is showing as your biggest battery drainer? You can try grabbing galaxy labs and seeing what's going on via battery tracker. You can find galaxy labs in the galaxy store, if it's not there then someone posted the apks in the apps forum as it's only available in some regions. . It gives you a little more granular visibility in batt usage.
check out gsam battery monitor from google play store. You will need to enable permissions to allow it to collect enhanced stats. This is done via ADB ( Android Debug Bridge), which is quite a simple process. The app walks you through enabling it step by step. This may help to identify what is going on. I can't remember how much detail it gives on system processes. But it is free, so worth a try
Newest update has also tanked my battery. Have a S20 snapdragon.
welcome to the world of exynos
see my post #311 here https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s20/review/screen-time-t4010447/page32 it may assist with some options to tweak to help with your drain. I got the new update a few days ago and my battery use is still fine, around 3% drain overnight for 8 hours.
Battery and Lag
I have the S20+ and when the new software BTH5 was installed...it was a nightmare ...huge drain and lag was terrible...I wiped cache no difference then factory reset which I hate doing due to the reinstall........however it is absolutely perfect having done that. hope that helps
Install Better battery stats from plays store, give it all the required permissions, do a full cycle and check what is draining your battery there. It's a very good app, perfect for troubleshooting battery problems.

There is no app causing battery drain because I have put all apps in deep sleep mode. Accubattery and Samsung labs battery tracker showing apps power consumption only and not hardware power consumption.
I've charged for 92% and it went to 82% in half an hour of sot and 2 hours of screen off.
This is very annoying me to find out where is the problem
No issue here. Do a factory reset may help
