yes. version doesnt matter.
the only thing that matters is you pick the right recovery.

Why is it that people recommend against the toolkit? Is there a problem with it or do you just think it's better to do it manually and learn while your are doing it?

Knowledge ftw.
Knowledge.
AND...a big part of it for me...
Is getting ADB/Fastbooot set up...so that we know it's working.
That way...if they come in one day with something wrong:
They:
A) Know what I'm asking them to do.
B) Know that everything is set up correctly...and we don't have to diagnose driver problems and such while the phone is bricked.
If a phone won't boot and all that noise...
ADB/Fastboot might not be working.
But if the user never GOT ADB/Fastboot working to begin with...we'll never know if they did it right or if the phone is simply in that bad of shape.
OP:
What I said sounds scary.
Just do ONE thing...never flash the stock .img's through fastboot that aren't for your device. (Radios/Bootloaders) Flashing the wrong recovery isn't going to brick you...you just won't have a recovery.
That is the big one that seems to get people into hard (or relatively hard) bricked situations.
And you'll be fine.

There is nothing wrong with using a toolkit, IFF you already know what is actually happening when using the toolkit.
I like to think of it this way: in school, they don't let you use a calculator until they teach you how to do arithmatic. Why do you think that is? Because you would never learn to add and subtract.
It's the same issue with a toolkit. It you don't do things manually first, you will never learn...

the toolkit works fine, but if he has no idea what he is doing and just blindly goes with what it says and stuff breaks, he has no idea how to fix it.
i would rather him understand what he did so if he has issues, we can help him get everything back in order and he will understand what we are asking him to do.

I just ported a ROM from the T-989 to the Nexus via disxda's kitchen and I'm slightly afraid to flash it since I bricked the last phone I tried porting on (it was hand-ported). I'm not asking you to flash it, but would you please look it over for me? Message me and I'll send you the link; just don't want it to be public yet.
What did you flash to your phone to brick a Nexus is probably the more important question.

No no, I'm not bricked! That was my first attempt and it was hand-ported. I did this with the kitchen, and it's the second attempt. Haven't flashed yet... Afraid the kitchen did something wrong. Just want some advice.

Haha, refer to above. The thing I bricked with my PREVIOUS port was a T-989. This is an entirely different, GNex port I made, but have not yet tested.

It doesn't look like much can be done until we get recovery.
I've built a stock, debloated, deodexed rom but cant test without recovery.
I've tried to compile recovery but I am afraid it's beyond my expertise.
Let me know if I can help
I spent my free time arguing today didn't even see your reply til now. I'll see what's up tomorrow before work though and I believe a rom can be flashed via stock recovery if done right. .. Maybe I think I read somewhere we can sideload? Worth investigation if you have a rom to test yaknow but use caution

Stock recovery has sideload but I tried the rom with no luck. I did the update via sideload on my good phone (regretting it now) and it worked.
maybe because its signed by samsung.

Yeah there's another step and I think that's the updater script that has to be altered to mimic Samsung or ported to your rom but I am just throwing you ideas for now. Hope it helps

Wishful thinking from a non-developer:
- debloated AOSP
- deodexed
- overclocking
- fast charge
- mount as usb storage
- cwm recovery
While all of these things are what I'd love to see, fast charge is a big one. I use my phone as a GPS navigator on my motorcycle, powered via USB outlet. I'm not sure about this model but my PRIOR phones would lose battery power faster than the usb outlet would charge. Fast charge settings options would remedy this.
I've never built a rom. I think it's time I read up and learn why I don't have what it takes to build one hahaha.
what?
Knox bootloader, wondering if stock out the box comes with it or if the ota update is the bringer of it. .

If by "New" you mean some super meaningful "OMGOSH We're almost there!" type update... No.
All I can really say is that we are still working on it. I believe justlove and I are going to be a pretty good team, we are in daily contact with each other and are working as hard as we can given the circumstances.
I know this is going to sound like normal dev bull s**t but please try to be patient and I'll let you know when we reach certain milestones.

If you can get this out, trying to convert my wife to android from iOS. Would be willing to test, especially since multiRom is in the works.
Assuming you have dropped interest in porting one over. I have never ported a rom or done anything dev wise but may give it a go over the next 2 or 3 days and see if I can get a stable MIUI port.

I will try to port but at the moment I wish to use patchrom and there is no mm code for it. Will try porting the MI4 as it uses the same SoC and same amount of ram.

Not even close. PC went out on me and, to help cover some bills, I had to fall back on my S6 and sell my 5x =( If you are like me and have 0 experience HERE is a really good guide! Sorry I can't be of further help.
Update: Patchrom is still not updated to MM so even without the device or my main PC I couldn't build it anyway and the only way to build it is with MI4c roms. They haven't even released the 5.1 patchrom
Is there anyone else interested in giving a try about this happening?
Of course I am interested in whole MIUI thing.
