HTC lagging behind with Security Patches? - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I have recently noticed that my HTC 10 is still stuck on the January 2017 security patch, despite the earlier eagerness of HTC to keep the 10 updated. And from what I was able to find on the internet, the US Unlocked version has at least reached the April patch. But five patches missed is pretty ridiculous.
How are the security patches coming along for the rest of you guys?

May 5th.
I'm on Lineage OS though. You give up Android Pay, but it's worth it for me.
I get the full Google experience. [Ik, should've buy the Pixel..don't worry...plan on doing it this year]

Mine is pretty snappy so far; DOESN'T compare with a Nexus/Pixel... But giving that is WIP, I have no doubt that in time the device tree will be optimised.

HTC says if there's no security patches means we don't need... (in a conversation with HTC France support)
I was like.... "WTF"???
Kinda disappointed. HTC 10 would be my last HTC phone, going for Pixel2.

I own both the HTC 10 and the Pixel. I regret buying the 10 for both my wife and I. Although I would prefer to have the Pixel XL and 128GB instead of 32GB, it was just too good a deal to pass up, and the up to date Android software runs the best stock experience I've ever had on any phone. There are still reasons I run custom ROMs and rooted, but there'll always be reasons.
I'm more disappointed that the HTC 10 doesn't have 7.1.2 yet, but you're right, it is ridiculous that it's not getting the monthly security patches. I do like the shape and feel of the 10 over the Pixel, but that's it. Mixed feelings about the fingerprint reader on the front versus the back - ideally there would be both.
I'm going to switch back to the 10 on a custom ROM soon only so that I can play around more freely with making my own ROM for the Pixel based on Google's factory image.

I'm on Orange Romania, but my phone is WWE. I bought it off contract. I'm not sure how this works, I'm pretty much a noob, but does my carrier still have a say on what updates I receive if my phone is a WWE version that wasn't bought from them?
And I'm pretty sure that it's a general problem. Only the US Unlocked version are up to date or close to it, the rest of the world is lagging behind.

Well, Android Pay doesn't work in Romania anyway.
And I don't know.. there are small problems like this that make me regret buying the HTC 10 a little, and I am a long time HTC fan.
But my choices were restricted from the start. I hugely dislike Samsung, so I never considered the S7, the Pixel was slightly too expensive, and the OnePlus 3 meant throwing my 128 GB sd card away. I actually wanted to buy the OnePlus 3T, but once again, the price in Romania was too much.
So I caught the 10 while it was on sale, and I bought it. But it will probably be my last HTC phone unless HTC starts doing stuff.
And I was thinking about installing a custom ROM, Lineage OS or Resurrection Remix. But I'm hesitating.

I totally agree, besides the build quality, and the hardware selection. HTC really blows on software...
Try the PureNexus MOD from Eliminator74, I'm running this for 3 days now :-?, And can't be happier.
You will have to flash a zip after flashing the rom, to change the sepolicy in order to work with your 128 SD Card.
Aand, the Video recording is not working.
But: The devs are amazing, and they put a whole lot of effort into this is project.
I have no doubt that these issues will be fixed soon
PS: Salut xD

It looks interesting. I can flash that to get the sd card working, and I don't use video recording anyway. I only took a quick look at it, but it doesn't have root by default, does it?
I'm mainly hesitating because of a thing I read online, it said that flashing ROM's on your phone could eventually damage it, like its battery. Did you ever have any problems because of flashing ROM's?
I still have a year of warranty left, so I the risk is bugging me a little.

I think it's nice due to the fact that is the "Vanilla" Android, which is what I prefer, but it has options to customise it as per your liking.
Ahmm, regarding the battery questions: I've always flashed or built roms for my devices. And yes; Some roms are poorly optimised and your battery may take a toll.
But when a rom's device tree and kernel are optimised; You shouldn't face any issues. Eliminator and tabp0le are working on this rom, and so far the battery is not WOW, but I'm sure with time, they'll nail down the correct parameters.
Use sunshine (it's$25) to S-OFF (Use LOCKED), and if ever: something happens to your device, you just run a RUU, a fastboot command, and your phone will be like new.
NOTE: I, nor the ROM developers I've mentioned above cannot be to blame if something does happen, and your phone cannot be recovered.
Hope it helps

Thanks. But that's the firmware for the USA unlocked version only. I have the European unlocked version, which is still on the January security patch, and that file doesn't work at all, right?
Cheers

Yeah, I don't think that the software for the US Unlocked version works on European unlocked.
I tried to change my 10's software to the US Unlocked back when they had the Nougat update, but no matter what you do, if you switch it and change the CID and stuff, you're left with the red warning text during boot. And the procedure to get rid of it is dangerous, complicated, and repetitive.
So unfortunately, we can't exactly do much about it but wait.

It's still on January Patch. That's just ridiculous. I'm not even talking about the Android version, that can be understandable. But lacking behind in monthly security patches is just unacceptable!

Apparently, we might finally get an update sometime these days.

I've come to terms with the likelihood that this phone will never see root. And if it does, there will be little to no development for custom roms or other goodies. I am to the point where I think the glory days of rooting and having cool software hacks that actually improve the phones are behind us. Now my opinion could be, because my last three phones have been locked down on Verizon, and my Razr M once unlocked never had great builds. The builds it did have had issues due to bootloader changes and my lack of willingness to downgrade the bootloader once other changes were made. As I recall. Still excited to see Nougat coming at least.

Well since Verizon just got rid of 2 year contracts for everyone so no subsidized phones I won't buy another carrier phone. My wife has the pixel xl and loves it. I will be going Google not so much for the unlocked bootloader more for immediate updates. Screw carrier and manufacturer taking forever to update or decide not to update (Droid Maxx 5.1 I'm looking at you).

I use Bluetooth with my truck and some earbuds...... I don't see where I would see extra functionality.
Does not affect your phone. It's just a way how info about update leaks. Every phone/update needs to pass certification before is released.

New to moto z play

Hey everyone
I had purchased moto z pay about two weeks ago ,great experience but i have some questions about some issues with the handset just to make sure it's normal or what :
1- when making a phone call i hear some strong hissing(buzzing as some says)in total it's another sound besides the voice of the other guys on phone , not a very quit voice as i used to in any mobile , is that normal ? is it soothing related with my phone carrier service or 4G or 3G stuff?
2- when applying style shell- which are very awesome - i can found out that it could be moved a little if swipe it in left or right around camera lens something like little shaky or moving, not just stick to the handset and ever never moved unless you remove it , is that normal K i was told it is at seller but you guys have it so is it normal ?
last thing is just a question and not an issue
Motorola is giving full support and update to the mobile even if it was like 4 or 5 years later , in other word how long i will be get the latest android updates for life time of the handset or maybe 3 years and will get bored and it is out ?
that's everything i want to know till now , if i had any issues i will post it here
so thank you guys so much for your help and patience
many regards
Updates? Maybe 3 or 4 years. It's Z modell, so I think we should get updates very long. But I don't know.
1. I think it's your carrier problem. which carrier are you using?
2. If it's never removed unless you remove it, it's ok.
3. Not 3 years! It's a very long time period.
Device is currently running 7.0 and company representative confirmed that it will get 7.1.1 soon And according to sources It'll definetly receive Android 8 in 2017 only.
Cheers!

But I don't know. Nothing is sure. But you can later use custom roms very good on this phone, if there are really no updates anymore. But I don't know the update plans, just that we can expect all update to android O and all other we must be wait and see. But I think so because it's not a cheap phone. And because the Moto G4(much cheaper and older phone) get android O, too. So, Moto Z modells should, too. And security patches at least for 3 years. All other would not be nice from motorola.

Honestly, I don't see what the big fuss is about Oreo. We have it already by way of custom ROMs, and it's stable enough for daily use at this point. The only issue I've seen is that certain camera functions don't work properly without the proprietary firmware, so if you want to adjust ISO or shutter speed you have to use a stock rom. That's exactly what I'm doing, btw, and I have yet to see anything 8.1 has that makes it functionally Superior to 7.0 and aside from security patches, I'm unlikely to change anything about my rom because Oreo just doesn't "wow" me.

I am of your opinion that there is no big "wow" about Oreo. But it's an update Lenovo/Motorola promised to their users and under these circumstances something one has paid for.
About custom roms: I'm a big fan of custom roms and use them on my other devices. But as there is no Oreo source for the Moto G5+ imo there are still several problems with AOSP or Lineage based roms like users losing volte, IMEI or even mobile data when returning to stock after being on 8.1 custom roms and also the roms I've tested lack of stability and features beside the mentioned camera issues. No daily driver material for me.
That would not happen if the kernel sources of stock Oreo for potter would be available and as we all know this will only happen when our devices will be upgraded. The Moto G5+ stock rom is really good in terms of battery and performance and I'm very satisfied with the rooted 7.0 stock but I won't unroot and flash stock everytime just to get a security patch. Don't get me wrong, security patches are good and important but for me it's not worth the effort against the background that a major update is about to come in foreseeable time.
And that's the point why I'm waiting for Oreo for the Moto G5+. For stable custom roms and a good reason to unroot and reflash my device.

Stable enough although not ideal. There are always a couple hacks and other shenanigans that may not deliver the complete experience. Either missing blobs or proprietary functions that some people need it.
Warranty. I did unlock my bootloader within 3 months. My G5 Plus started to act stupid, the power and volume buttons would get stuck and not press down anymore. This is not my fault. I'm no *insert stereotype here* to handle my phone as if it is some piece of brick.
Result: I bought another one, extra 800BRL.
Also, not everyone has the knowledge to flash ROMs, as easy as it may be. Some people **** up the most simple stuff, such as downloading the right zip for the right device.

Well there is PIP (Picture-in-Picture) there may be a lot of people that would actually love to have this feature.
There is a new interface, some people like looking at something different. Blame them
I think they improved the File Manager.
More precise notification settings. (Notification Channels)
Unknown Source APK settings revamped. (Now you don't need to go back to that APK file because the system won't dismiss everything.) [And you can choose only your file manager in case your browser gets attacked and the attacker finds a way to install APKs from it, security+)

It should "wow" the fact that Motorola promised something as a company and did not deliver.
Would you trust them again? Do you believe they are caring enough about you as customer, or do you think they see you more as money than other OEMs?
I'm out won't due that stuck button problem I had and the delayed updates.

Companies lie. It's a universal constant. LG lied when they said all LG G4 devices after a certain serial number were free of the bootloop solder defect. Lie. They said it wouldn't happen in future devices. Lie. HTC lied about certain phones getting Gorilla Glass... They all lie. Motorola/Lenovo didn't give an exact date, they just said it would happen for a specific list of devices. They've reiterated the list, and then started a rollout in AUS/NZ for the X4 which is on that list, so now they can say they kept their promise because they started the rollout on one of the listed devices. They're going to say the delays are because they can't, logistically, rollout to all of them simultaneously. They've still come closer to keeping the promise than any other OEM, but they're all liars about something.
And I never take anything as a personal attack unless someone says something personal about *me* in an insulting way, so we're good. You're just sharing your opinion, same as I did. There's no harm in that.

Unofficial LineageOS 14.1 is stable enough for daily use. I've been running it the past week weeks without GAPPs just fine.

Am I the only one who don't want Moto to release orio for this device? I was also waiting for Oreo but after updating on one of my devices I found the new UI awkward specially the status bar and quick tyles (they all are either white or pure black). Also I am not going to unlock this as official LaOS is not available.
Anyone has any idea if official builds will ever be possible for Potter or not?

You are OT. We are talking about March security update not about how pretty is the oreo UI.
Afte rall you can choose to not update to oreo, use a lineage of Nougat. Many choices for android users, you have nothing to worry about.
I've only got the January security patch on my G5 Plus last Wednesday. You guys are already getting the March patch?

Depends on where you live, if your have a retail or a carrier locked phone. These OTA's always roll out in stages. There are users recieving the Nov security patch these days.
Sent from my Moto G5 Plus using XDA Labs
Got it on retus.

Updates

Since it is an Android One phone (with the promise of timely updates and security patches), I am curious that I'm still on an October update and not November's, which is now almost over. Anyone else?
Same here, hopefully delayed this once because of Pie update, but first Nokia so not sure about their track record
I am pondering to get this new device, but I see there is no XDA support yet for mods or roms
How do you feel about it?
I got the phone from work, but as a flashaholic I wouldn't go Nokia, search a bit Bootloader unlock I think only one of their device has it. If custom ROM and root is your thing check another brand

Yeah.. I wouldn't expect any action here for custom ROMs. I've been a frequent flasher in the past, but as I looked for a new device, I found myself asking why. Frankly, security updates are more important to me at this point, and there really isn't anything I do that requires root.
This is also my only device, so I use it for work all the time, and custom ROMS always seem to have lingering issues with the basics.
I used to flash ROM on my Nexus devices, now on Nexus 5x I am on stock.
For my future device, if there is also XDA support is better, but it not a so important condition.
Maybe slightly offtopic, but how do you feel with this device at all?
Do you like the way it is stock?
I am mostly interested to battery duration, network and if photos are great
I would imagine that given Thanksgiving it's delayed until the end of the month.

I don't really see why thanksgiving would affect the Devs/release, most of their R&D is in China, some in Finland, where it's not a big thing

For those of you using the stock ROM, what are your plans for migrating once we reach EOL?

As I'm sure we all know here, our beloved Pixel 3 XLs are officially getting dropped by Google in about three weeks. If history repeats itself, though, we will get the Android 12 release in October followed by one last OTA in December. My typical usage pattern with a phone is:
Get the phone and use the stock ROM until the phone reaches EOL.
Once EOL is reached, move to LineageOS.
I know that this is a pattern that some others more or less follow as well, but I was wondering about what variations there are to the pattern. Does anyone here use another ROM? As much as I like LineageOS, I would be more interested in using a ROM that is basically identical to stock Android. I have read about compiling AOSP from source so as to maintain my own ROM that does just that, but from what I understand, that does not work very well for unsupported devices. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Off the top of the head... EOL only means no more official updates or support, ie security fix's...
Your fone working on a custom rom will still work, since you'd think it was the custom rom updated...
If they do stop the fone calling, there's plenty other apks for 'near field' communication
Free wifi calling hint hint..

Oh yes, I know that functionality-wise the phone will continue working as before. What I want to know is, what are people considering in regards to custom ROMs?

Kl, well, me, I'm wondering this too just now, because I'm stuck with a system-as-root fone thats a pain, and now there's too many different too choose from, and if they're of the best quality, they now have to cover at least 4 different styles of booting alone, I'd watch those for the ones updating quickest

Well, LineageOS certainly does that, but at the same time, it also takes them about 6 months to move to a new major release of Android. I was hoping that someone would know of a release that does it just as well, but is a little more flexible with migrating. I haven't found any myself.
I've yet to convince myself which version is for my fone lol

I've already moved to LineageOS, simply to get the monthly security updates. I have not seen any functional loss on LineageOS. If you don't feel you need security updates, just stay on the stock ROM, especially if you think you need any Android 12 features. IMO, new Android features simply add more bloat than I want or need. Your opinion may differ.
Not at all, they all sound excellent, however, my fone cant write to the actuall system, can mount, but no joy yet doing anything else, and no overlay works so far, the only custom os I could install was a chrooted nethunter, which was pretty lame and useless being my system as root is a pain... so I'm looking..

My plan, at least for now, is to ride on stock until the last update is pushed, and then once LOS gets updated to 12, I will migrate. The only problem with this, though, is that it would leave me without security updates from the end of December until either March or April, and I am not sure how I feel about that.
My experience might help...Last year I was using a Motorola 5Plus with Pixel Experience Rom and loved it. My phone was fast, stable and highly compatible to the "Pixel Experience". I had a hardware issue and decided I liked the PE so much, I went ahead and got a Pixel 3xl...I've never had such a seamless transition...was just faster with better hardware but almost no thought changing for different mechanisms of actions...
I'm hoping someone picks up PE and ports it to the 3XL and I'll use that....otherwise, any alternative suggestions for closest to "stock" Pixel would be appreciated...

Yeah I have seen PixelExperience and would really like to use it over LOS if the 3 XL gets support. As far as I know, the 2 XL did not receive support until it's EOL, so there's hope. Is the feature parity as spot-on as is claimed?

For the features and functions I use, it was almost totally seamless...it was less than a typical release level amount of change (e.g.: 10->11 was more than I experienced PE -> P-3xl)
YMMV however...based on what features/functions you use most heavily.

Great! I guess it's time for me to start researching building my own image.
"David B said he's gonna research building PE for 3xl....
GREAT...be sure to use the AOSP version ... there are a couple of flavors of PE but IMHO the AOSP version is the closest to the stock 3xl ...
If you don't mind guiding me a little over the rough patches, I'd be willing to help test your creation once you're out of alpha<G>...(my 3xl is my daily driver)... specifically, I'm used to having TWRP available for the maintenance/management of the ROM and if I understand it properly, TWRP isn't used / available for the 3xl ROM's...
Thanks

For now, I would like to hold off on it. I don't really see a point in putting effort in to building PE for the 3 XL when we're about two weeks away from the next major Android release, at which point, PE will need reworked by the dev team. If the 3 XL is not picked up by someone else in the modding community at release time, and I've seen some people that think it will be, then I will start researching it.

Sounds like a plan...will keep an eye on development threads for it once it goes out of support.
Even though the last update will be in Dec I'll probably keep using the 3XL until the 7 comes out (or 6a maybe). I just had the battery replaced a couple months ago, and there is nothing wrong with the phone. I usually use devices until EOL hits, and then upgrade when the next OS/phone comes out, so whatever device I'm using at any given time is on the current OS release (IE: 3XL on Android 12 until Android 13 drops, and then upgrade phone to get Android 13).
I would like to use that method, but I think it's too expensive, so I try to settle for "my phone's basically dead."

I don't know how to tell if it is still in effect. I see photos counted against my storage allotment, but don't know if that is just for my previous phones, or if it includes the Pixel photos.
My guess is you would have to use the Google Camera and Photo apps to keep unlimited upload, if it can be kept with LineageOS.
