Personaly I received my phone a week and a half ago. I used stock for a week to be sure that all works and then I unlocked the bootloader-unlock, installed twrp and flashed jaguar. I think that this rom is even faster than stock without any delay between the button press and the action. And even if a rom is less powerful I think that with sd820 there is no risk that it can be really felt. Just choose the right roms and you will not have any problem

Its a good phone i have one

64 million dollar question, should I custom ROM?

Hi
As title says I am toying with the idea of updating my ROM from stock 4.1.1
Although I am happy with its overall performance I would like to know from other people what they felt were the main difference when they changed ROMs
I would love to get rid of all the bloatware and have the new camera app with 4.2
also...read somewhere that 4.2 will be available OTA in the new year but what the hell, people root out of the box so it can't be all that bad
All advice welcome thank you for your time
Cheers
Lee
If all you want to do is remove bloatware, all you need to do is root. You can install some of the 4.2 apps without rooting either.

You don't need to use a Custom rom really.
I got my Note 2 since yesterday and I'm really happy with stock performance (and I was coming from a SGS3).
I just powered it with root and XposedFramework with call recording and multiwindow modules.
I don't know only few devs are doing their mods with xposedframework...

If you want to tweak and customise it then go for a custom ROM.
Otherwise, if you just want to remove pre-installed apps then just root it and stay on stock as D3 suggested.
Ok so rooting is a must, would I still get updates OTA if I am rooted? maybe for now I can just uninstall bloatware and install the camera app until 4.2 is released
Going to give this a whirl

I went that way with my Note I, and was so addicted to it that I didn't rest until I bricked it, of course it was entirely my fault alone but will never take that root again.
So my 64 million dollar advice is no, I will most patiently wait for the stock ROM.

I dunno about OTA. I rooted and flashed custom within about 2hrs of getting my Note 2
Put it this way though...any updates, fixes or features included in new official firmware will always be included in the latest stock ROMs, often even before the official stock appears as many XDA devs have industry insiders who often leak f/w early.
Easiest way to root and install a custom recovery:

All soft-bricks are fixable... don't let it put you off enjoying the vast array of awesome custom ROMs available for Note 2. Just be sure to always have a back-up handy, and to always read the instructions as many times as it takes for them to be clear in your mind :good:
If you have to ask then no.

Been using droids for too long now, and I've tried them all. So my 128 million dollar answer will be, NO.
I'm never opening my door to welcome whole world of problems, bugs, frustrations.

You must be flashing the wrong ROMs
I've been doing this a long time too, on lots of different phones and rarely have any bugs or frustrations, certaininly nothing that isn't usually A/ apparent on stock f/w too or B/ fixed within hours/days by the ROM devs. I wouldn't say I'm a flashaholic though, I tend to find a ROM that works well then use it for a few weeks with the odd kernel swap until the next major release, usually a new base, then I'll monitor the threads for a few days to see what issues others are having and see if it's worth my while updating. I guess that's half the fun for me though and I understand some people simplay can't be bothered with it. Each to their own :good:
The good thing about Note 2 is it has good stock and cutom ROMs so you're going to have a good experience either way
I'd echo citizenlees comments. The stock rom is pretty good.
I'm a relative new comer, and I'm in the process of mixing up ROMS And kernels. And I have to say it's been fun trying new things and seeing how they work for you. My battery life now is mega! And that's only from tinkering.
Make sure your back up is solid depending on which recovery version you use.
I've had to use the recovery method when things have gone pear shaped, but all good now.
Have fun and explore in small steps.

you need to have root to enjoy your android phone to full...for ex: to include all apps in multiview, etc..........but when you have rooted the note2, there is no way you get OTA updates...they are also far and few..you need to update by flashing the official new firmware using odin, when it is made available, usually 2-3 months later than the leak....and you would again lose root...so you again have to root......(unlike my asus tablet, where i can restore root without problem and i get OTA updates despite being rooted..and i am using stock rom on it...asus is fast on updates and fixes)
so think about it, ...you may as well flash custom roms (most are close to stock on the note2 ...just debloated, rooted with all tweaks and mods pre-installed) and enjoy all tweaks and updates earlier.
just read instructions carefully, no problems
The stock firmware is wonderful. I myself got my note yesterday and I am planning to just root and debloat it. I would advise the same.

i'm more than satisfied with fully stock ROM ( with disabling bloatwares )
just playing with kernels
Im using it stock (4.1.2 official) + root + cwm (to flash some mods for odex roms...) .. And i enjoy it.. THe only thing i miss are those mods for notification toggles, as i cant get them to work on odexed 4.1.2...
Rest is totally fine...
And for the OTA. you dont need to wait for ota.. Just follow xda and, when next official version comes out (4.2) just flash it via odin

If quality don't matter, 4.2 camera isn't close to Samsung's firmware camera. Just something to consider.
Device belong to us..not samsung anymore. Unlease the power!
Update....
hence forth with cm10.1 and gapps-jb was a pleasant experience I have to say.
on boot chose not to do a full synch with gmail, sweet that it re-downloads all ur apps but on this occasion thought best not to
camera didnt have sphere!! so i flash it with 4camnex2 so now I have 2 camera icons in my app draw one that has no sphere and one that fails to load!! hmm
also keyboard doesnt have any number across the top, I was sooo used to this previous now its just a bind having to press 123 button
on the whole I am still glad I upgraded to 4.2
am I right that I could re-flash with an official ROM and revert back to OTA updates?
Any advice on tweaks wit this would be most welcome
Cheers

*NEED SOME SERIOUS HELP GUYS* Problem with WiFi

Guys I just received my phone from service after the SDS syndrome.
I flashed to PACman ROM and PRObam 4.4.6 and 4.3 nightliy but with all three I am having problem with WiFi.
It seems to not been able to connect with all three. It says saved and then does not connect.
Any ideas? Otherwise what would you recommend me to flash to right now?
Please help me because I need a solution asap. I don't even have the stock rom and I need to download it, so I'd like to hear your opinions before I do.

well try phoenix rom if want the 4.1.2 as for me the default sometime created problem connecting to wifi which still does and temporary solution solves it but its irritating when phone takes time or does not connect, which I found that the phoenix rom used to connect in a sec as it should be and never had problems connecting
Yeah, being this your first flashing experience,i suposed, why did you chose the 4.3 builds?I think wifi thing is 4.3 issue,if you want fast buttery smoth everlasting juice deliciusness flash thunder lite rom...

Thanks I will try it, I am out of solutions for fixing this weird issue with the CM 10.2 custom based ROMs. Just in case that 4.1.2 creates issues as well, can you recommend me your best 4.1.1 which works like a charm for me now?

No this is far from my first flashing experience even with Note 2. It's my first flashing experience as I said after receiving my phone from SDS syndrome (mobo was swapped). Why shouldn't I flash to the newest build if I can?
It had 4.1.1 and worked great as it works now with a custom 4.1.1 rom. The problem is with other custom ROMs and yes everything works amazing except WiFi connection with the CM 10.2 based that I tested (Nightly,Probam,PAC).
It should be a software issue with some devices in this code.

well stay away from 4.1.1 rom as its prone to sds so avoid it and yes thunderlite is even an amazing rom fast and stable now its upto you what u choose plus thunderlite has the battery advantage too if you go for phoenix choose 240dpi mode in aroma and enjoy the beauti of the beast ,the choice is yours, earlier i have tried N7100 Resurrection Remix® but in that case too wifi worked fine for me ,I would suggest a complete wipe install ,even wiping your system but do a backup of your current before proceeding in case.

Also tried 4.2.2 RootBox before and it still gives me the problem with WiFi. There's definitely something fishy going on with anything from 4.1.2 and above for me from what I've tested with 6 different ROMs..About the SDS syndrome I checked with eMMC program and it says it's a sane chip this time, before it warned me it was an insane one and after some time my phone had died on me.
Anyway I've had enough, just finished installing Phoenix V13 and tweaking the basics. Works amazing thus far and it looks like a great rom. WiFi works great and I think I'll stay with this one for the time being.
10 days without this beast were A LOT, I'm bored looking even further I hope this one will serve me well..

well, right now i have franko kernel installed , no params adjusted... not even sure where i would find the section in settings.. on a stock Verizion JB 4.2... im not even sure what would be the best rom to try
some one suggested MetalC.. but i cant find the Gapps that work with that one... so what i need is a solid ROM, Kernel and Gapps..
i was able to root via the Nexus Root Tool kit... that went well... but now i need to decide what Toro version rom i need to use.. and im keeping an eye out to see if the Franko kernel brings any joy for those random reboots and shutdowns... the guy i bought the Gnex from said he will do a full refund but i want to sort this out if possible... this little machine is too cool just to cash out on...
time to research on roms and stuff i guess..

For 4.4 go for cMetal / Playfulgod / dhacker's CM builds, for a 4.3 experience i dunno any one for toro and for kernel i think you can try out MpoKang as it can be flashed on 4.3 and up just have a look in the official thread and you'll be able to find zips plus use trickster app for the kernel control :good: !!
well, a bit of a followup friday swapped out the stock kernel for Franko kernel... and i have had it on for about most of the day yesterday and zero random shutdowns and no SOD.. this little thing is great and its a lot more easy to have this around then a remote for 2 google tv a roku and an xbmc box... i have not delved into new roms, the JB stock seems to be working fine im getting at least 10 hrs out of the battery... this is be best micro tablet i could ever find for 70 bucks... and the screeen is quite nice.. im sure i will be moding soon enough... but for now just a kernel change seems to have put an end to the sleep of death and random shutoffs..

What to do with the phone to make it usable?

My friend has an xperia m single sim model running latest official firmware and its is very slow. Hangs quite often and takes 2 to 3 swipes to unlock the screen. So i thought ill flash the phone with a custom rom.
Im good with flashing phones and have done it a lot. I always do my research before flashing to get the best rom for the phone. But with this phone i am stuck. I dont think i have found a stable rom yet. I know i should not ask which is the best rom but still can someone suggest a rom which can be flashed to this phone.
The problem is that after i will be meeting my friend for a day and i cannot flash it for a long time. So i dont want to put a rom and then after few days he finds serious bugs.
So some suggestion please. I usually go for omnirom or cm11.Some advice regarding rom, kernel, recovery would help me a lot
Thanks

Try Latest build of CM11 FXP, that is most Stable Rom according to me.
I'd say it's latest build from FXP (it's 326 so far). No serious bug or annoying UI. go for it. :good:
i will go with cm11 then.Thank you guys one more doubt. Does cyandelta work with fxp builds?

very noobies need kind person to give suggestion

There is no N rom for this phone with battery life or stability even close to any stock KK or LP rom. All ROMs after LP are experimental and buggy to some degree. Also, since there is no official stock rom after LP, anything else would require a computer to unlock bl.
I would suggest flashing the MX ROM as far as I know this is the LP with best battery life now. It can be installed on locked bootloader and is as stable as stock LP.

Thanks for ur suggestion. Yes i know mx rom. Been reading the forum for a litle while. Worth to try
And not to forget that there are no security patches for stock LP since.... a long time. That is why a lot are using new roms although the battery life is not so great in comparison to stock roms.
Guys forget about MX rom! There is new ROM by munjeni out there. It is based on Lineage OS 14.1. It has decent battery life, good camera (almost like on stock), great stability, all security patches and is smooth like butter.

Thanks mate
yes, that rom from munjeni also looks the best for me. When I have time I will upgrade fom to Jaguar ROM to that one.
If you have stock KITKAT you CAN'T flash 5.1 or newer roms via recovery.
This is because from android L the partition scheme is changed, so you MUST use flashtool to flash first the stock LP ROM.
If you flash a LP rom via dual recovery in kitkat you'll brick your phone!
And I'm surprised that no one said it to you.
Once you flashed stock LP, rooted, installed REAL RECOVERY and unlocked bootloader, you can install any custom ROM.
If you don't unlock your bootloader you can flash ONLY STOCK BASED rom.
Cheers, and good luck. (I hope you didn't brick you phone)
