Hi Guys,
I'm thinking about buying this phone for a friend and need to understand how the fingerprint scanner works.
On my One Plus 3, the scanner is ON all the time which makes it awesome, (but probably eats battery.) :victory:
On my Galaxy Tab S2, you have to press the scanner to turn it on first, which makes the whole process much worse.
Is the scanner on the P2 always ON, (like the One Plus 3,) or does it require a press to wake it up? (like on Samsung devices.)

The scanner is always on.. you don't need to wake the phone to use it.. the battery drain is minimal

Is it a physical button? i.e. presses in, or is it just purely capacitive?
My Samsung also has an issue where if you lock the screen using an app, (Power Toggles,) you can't unlock the phone with your fingerprint. Any idea if the P2 suffers the same issue?
It's both. The fingerprint sensor is capacitive and works by just placing one's finger on it. There are also many gestures that work on the capacitive sensor like tap to go back long press to view recent apps. The button is also physical pressing it brings you to home screen and long press brings up Google assistant

Ok Uibon,
So to unlock the phone, do you just place your finger on the sensor (without pressing it down,) or do you have to press it down as well? I ask this as on my Tab S2, having to press down also results in many incorrect reads.
Its a pity Lenovo didn't put a lock screen gesture in the fingerprint scanner like One Plus. It by far the best system I've ever used. :angel:
It works like the fingerprint on the OnePlus.. just place the finger to make it work no pressing the button necessary.

Just tried screen lock widget and it requires pin to unlock after using it. Finger does not work.
I am using nova prime and double tap to sleep and i can wake from finger print sensor iff you use timeout lockscreen method which means after you double tap the screen to lock the it screen goes black instantlly but the actual full screen lock engages after 30sec allowing the phone to screen to be locked through its own system hence the fingerprint wake works normal. I am not aware of other launchers that have this but nova prime has it.

That's an Android security limitation and all phones do that I believe. I think some apps can "trick" the phone by turning the screen off and let the timeout do the locking but I'm not sure.
If you have root access then they'll work. Else they won't. It's a security feature and uses device admin rights to lock the phone. Which means the device admin should unlock it by the most secure way. That's pin password or pattern.
It's not device specific and hence it's nothing to blame Lenovo

You are correct dannejanne. Some OEM's have realised how stupid it is and have sorted it out.
On the One Plus 3, you can securely unlock the phone and relock all with one finger while your phone is on your desk. You can do this better and faster than any other phone. As it's something you do so many times a day, it's time for the other OEM's to blatantly copy this.

So I've had my HTC One M8 for about a few weeks now and I absolutely love it. One thing I really love are the gestures to turn it on and what not. I have realized when double tapping the screen or swiping up to unlock, it doesn't work unless the phone is straight upwards. Sometimes while sleeping, I lay on my side and often times, I have to tap like 10-15 times just for it to recognize it or swipe but nothing happens. Then I have to go all the way to the top to turn it on by hand. Does this happen to anyone else? I use Nova Launcher Prime, if that may help.

You need to apply motion to the phone before it will activate the gestures, and allowing you to unlock the phone. It's a design choice.

Ahhh, I always wondered about that. Good info.
Is there a way to achieve this without applying motion?
All you need do is simply tap the phone on one edge to rock the phone and alert the motion sensor then 2 delibrate double taps not quick taps on the bottom half of the screen.
Works almost every time for me.
Pretty much what the title says. I'm using resurrection remix rom right now. Is there somewhere an option to be able to wake the device with a press of the home button without using fingerprint lock? Or actually any lock at all.

In some cases fingerprint just doesn't work. After doing heavy manual labor without cloves the fingerprints kind of lose they edge and one has to put his finger many times on the sensor. That's only one of the reasons that popped up to my mind from my personal experiences. I had a bug or something in OOS 3.2.6 that it unlocked the phone with any finger or skin contact. It was a foolproof and very simple way to open up the phone but I think it would be useless without a wallet case or something similar.

Try adding the same fingerprint multiple times. This should make it more accurate.
Does double tap the screen to wake work for you or does it have to be the home button?

Double tap to wake would probably be enough. I've already added my finger multiple times but still having issues with it sometimes. At the moment I'm using Xposed Additions to unlock the screen. First I double tap to wake the phone to lock screen and then open it by long pressing the recent button if fingerprint is not recognized.
I realized after reading your post that I can wake up and unlock the device with double tap by removing security all together. Thanks for pointing me to right direction.

Well, first of all, i dont really like locking my phone, as it's mostly a waste of time. No one gets my phone without me knowing it really, so there's no problem with "security" and having to unlock it is just one extra step especially when i hand my device to someone. Now fingerprints are fast indeed, but i'd have to add quite a few of my fingers as right thumb/pointer might sometimes just not be available for whatever reason and even then sometimes my hands may be dirty because im working, or something, and i'll use a knuckle or something like that.
Now to be honest double tap to wake has been growing on me, but still i'd like the single press home button unlock. It just seems easier and more elegant.
I was searching for a way to make Tasker wake phone when I pick it up, so I just have to at it to unlock it. In looking into this, I discovered Gravity Screen, which amongst other things, can wake your phone when you pick it up, straight to Face Unlock. It seems to work well but I'm not sure of the impact on battery. I'm not using it to lock the screen... Really only using it for the one thing.

I've been using this app on my last two phones in order to be able to double tap the home screen on my launcher (Action Launcher) to turn off the screen, WITHOUT locking the phone. For some reason though, this no longer works on the OP5T, double tapping just simply won't trigger the screen off shortcut. Really disappointed in this, are you able to get this to work on yours?
I do also use its proximity sensor feature so that it automatically turns the screen on upon removal from my pocket, and it turns the screen back off once I put the phone back into my pocket, which triggers the angle needed to turn the screen off. That feature still works as intended, and better yet, preps the screen for the face unlock. And as far as I can tell, hardly uses any extra battery.

Hmmm... I use Nova Launcher and I use the double tap to lock the phone. I've never wanted it to not lock. I wasn't aware that there is a double tap action in Gravity Screen? I'll have a look.

It's not really within Gravity Screen itself, you'd have to use the launcher to set up the double tap on home screen to a shortcut. From there, you can pick one of Gravity Screen's shortcuts that allow you to either just turn off the screen, or do a persistent off screen, where you have to use the power button to bring it back on. I believe the problem I had with using the double tap to lock screen feature built into the launchers is that it forces you to have to enter in a password afterwards...face unlock or fingerprint do not work.

Hmmm. Not true with Nova. I double tap to lock and I can use fingerprint to unlock. However, I believe that I requires root for this lock method. Do you have root?

Nope, I don't have root. I did try the same shortcuts with Nova, and it didn't work there either.
have used the app on my old OPO.. now on 5T it's just perfect.. just pick up the phone.. and prepare for landing on homescreen without any tap or button press

Unfortunately, some smartphones let the CPU on while listening to the proximity sensor. This is called a wake lock and causes considerable battery drain. This isn't my fault and I cannot do anything to change this. Other phones will "go to sleep" when the screen is turned off while still listening to the proximity sensor. In this case, the battery drain is practically zero.

First of all, thank you for the recommendation. This app is working flawlessly for now but I'm just curious about a feature. I have enabled the feature that allows to cover the proximity sensor to lock the screen. It needed device admin permission for that. Now, when I wave to wake it up, it takes me to the enter pin screen instead of fully unlocking so I have to enter the pin to unlock the device because it says that the device is locked by admin. Is there a workaround to bypass this one extra step?

This looks like the Nova's "double tap to lock" feature. If you're not rooted you need to grant admin permission to lock the screen, which requires PIN everytime you log back in.
Exactly, if you're not root, the "lock" feature is no good if you use fingerprint, I have disabled it, anyway phone goes to sleep on its own.
You should also check out KinScreen (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teqtic.kinscreen), it does wave to wake and also has many options to control when the screen stays on. For example, you can set it to stay on when your phone is at more than a 45° angle (like most times you're on your phone, reading something).

You can basically use double tap to wake with this, just enable it and tap your proximity sensor to wake.

I just switched from a Asus Zenfone 5z which has a dedicated fingerprint sensor. So one touch and you ard on home screen.
Now the fingerprint sensor on Note 10 + is slow, also the fact that one has to first click the side key and then put the finger on the screen and seemingly wait for 2 sec.
It is nowhere near as fast as the zenfone 5z.
Have you guys got any better solution or idea to unlock it fast.

You don't exactly have to turn on phone to use fingerprint reader.
If you know the position of fingerprint reader then putting your finger there would turn on and unlock phone. But that would be if you can get it on right position. If not it would tell you and then you can readjust as it will then show you.
Other option would be to have always on display and would show position of fingerprint reader.
You can also double tap to wake up phone as well. Then go through same process.
Hope some others could add more but these has been what I've found out with my usage.

Enable "always on display" so that you always see the finger print location.
What ever finger you use most for the finger print, scan it for 2 spots out of the 4 available. So I have my left thumb for 1, right pointer for 2, and right Thumb for 3 and 4. My right thumb is now always solidly fast.

1. Please clarify : Do you mean to register the same right thumb twice to increase accuracy of the right thumb, as that is what I mostly use.
2. Currently always on display is set as tap to show.
Does making it always show have any significant reduction in battery.

Didn't even know that I had to just press the locked screen.
Also thank you for recommending the lift to wake up gesture, has increased the speed a lot.
Still wondering if I can use NFC to keep it unlocked as it is always kept on a phone stand.

You can use Smart lock Trusted places under settings-lock screen to keep phone unlocked. You just have to turn on phone then just swipe to go into phone without password but it will lock after a certain timeframe if not used.

I do know about Smart Lock but prefer not to use it as keeping the GPS on does feed the location data to other apps as well, not something I prefer to give away.

You can register your face as well. It works really fast with lift to wake up gesture.
Smart lock can be used without GPS on, it uses a trusted wifi network to keep the phone unlocked or, if you have one a bluetooth speaker...
Don't need GPS at all...
Another vote for smart lock but with a wearable like a wear os watch. I pretty much never have to unlock my phone.
In case helpful to someone else, I enabled the increase touch sensitivity setting under Display settings and the fingerprint seems to work much quicker as I don't have to press down harder.

I have AOD set to always on, and it is super easy to unlock.
I pick up the phone, hold my thumb on the sensor and it is unlocked instantly. I don't see how it could get any better than that!

Hi, I did turn it on after reading your post, enabled my location with GPS off and wifi connected but it doesn't work.

Yes I turned ut on as well as the phone comes with a factory applied screen protector and that is what that setting seems to be for. Should have been on by default.
