Built In Messenger App, is the only one that works. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Has anyone run into the problem where you can only receive text from the built in messenger app. I've tried Textra, Android Messenger, Etc. And all have the exact same history from a few days ago compared to Samsung messenger which is updated completely . I can send from the the 3rd party messengers i've made default, but all responses go to the Samsung messenger even though it is not the defaulted one. Can anyone point me in the right direction with this?

I am having the same issue

I'm using Android Messenger and it works correctly. Try re-checking your default messenger settings.

Did that, when my default text app is set to textra or android, 1) i only see the history from a few days ago 2) messages can be sent from the app but all incoming still go to the stock app.

Been running Textra from day one and can report no problems.

My Textra App, shows a completely different message history than the built in app. One that has a few of todays messages in it, missing some in between. I have no idea whats going on. Also my OTP SMS autofill does not work on any app (when the server sends you a code and instead of having to go into messages and copy the code, it should autofill and self verify) You can imagine the problem i had when trying to do a factory restore and google was attempting to send me a text to verify and it wasnt auto reading the text with the code.

Yes, the problem exists.
Go to Settings > Cloud and Accounts > check the multi-line settings "this is the option that is messing with texts"
Also go to Apps > Scroll to "Messages' and tap on it, Hit Storage >> Clear Data, go back one, and you'll see "set as default" under the permissions. clear defaults and "after you do the wipe it might be greyed out >> open your preferred app and try to text yourself and make sure.

What should multi line settings be? I have DIGITs with my S3 Rugged, but i never had this problem with my V20

I've been using Signal since day one. Absolutely no issues. Even used it to make calls through signal to another signal user.

I didn't mess with the multi-line settings, but just to make sure it is off. I have been using textra with no issue.

My wife started having problems with texts after the most recent update as well. She can send texts and I receive them, but she doesn't receive any texts. I've had her try resetting, turning on and off Wi-Fi, etc. I'm having her try clearing data and cache from the Messages app, I'll let you know if it works.
Edit: Tried clearing data and cache and setting Messages as the default, still no luck. And I don't see any option for multi line settings in Cloud and Accounts. Any other ideas?

For Those Having Problems on GVoice

Seeing the "similar threads we found", I see that I'm not the only one having this issue and we're not the only phone having problems.
Turns out there's a known issue on Google Voice where if the customer adds a line, subtracts a line or screws with their service in any way that requires an activation of the line that's on Google Voice (like an upgrade...yknow like we all did ), that Google Voice can fizzle out. Basically, it automatically unchecks the box that says "this phone can receive texts" which prevents your phone from receiving texts. This also changes the setting on the phone app to route texts through your stock messages app again. This will step-by-step you into changing them back.
Well I got mine working again, and I'd like to share how I did it so maybe it'll work for you.
**NOTICE**
This is for one line on Google Voice only. Apparently this won't work if you have multiple phones attached to the same Google account.
Okay:
1. open up your web browser and go to: voice.google.com. Then open up google voice on your phone.
2. in the browser, click your phone number (top right corner). A menu will pop up and you'll notice the "this phone receives text messages" (or however it's written) is unchecked. That's the bug, it'll uncheck itself every time you go to that screen. Also, when this box becomes unchecked, it actually changes a setting in the Google Voice app on your phone to route texts through the stock messaging app again (annoying).
3. Check that box so that it's one (don't close out of the browser yet, leave it on that screen)
4. Then, in your google voice app on the phone, go to menu > more > settings > notifications and sync where there's a drop down menu specifying whether you want messages received by the messages app or GVoice. choose which one you want (i'm assuming if you're here, you use GVoice). This is the setting I mentioned that it changes in the app (all the way back in step 2).
5. Now you should still have GVoice open in your browser. If not, you follow directions badly and need to repeat the process. If yes, you should have the unchecked box checked (when it wasn't before) and the setting on the phone app itself changed back to normal.
6. While the browser is open, have a few people text you. You should now be getting texts and voicemails delivered to your GVoice account again. This isn't necessary, but to test to make sure you did it right.
Last: once you re-establish that "connection" close the browser and never go back to that options page again (it'll just un-check that box and change that setting on the phone and make you do this all over again). Now your GVoice should be working properly.
*addendum*
If you're still have trouble after this. Go back to the options page where you started, check the box, then uninstall/re-install Gvoice on your phone and go through the set up again...then continue following the steps.
*addendum 2*
If this fails, then disable GVoice services with Sprint and set them up anew using the app on your phone (like you did the first time).
Don't worry about the "can't do whatever", just hit "skip".
Then follow the steps above.
Hope this helps, I know us GVoice users are minority but hey we need people to figure crap out too

I have tried these steps and nothing works..If i change the setting in the app to use the google voice app for receiving text it automatically un checks the box online in the google voice settings. When I recheck the box online the app reverts back to using the stock app for messaging in the goggle voice app. quite pissed off about it but i'm still receiving calls from my google voice number so I guess I will live with it until its figured out.

here's the essential part:
Check the box, but leave the browser window open so you can see it.
save the setting for using GVoice but leave the settings open so you can see it.
Then open a new browser window and text someone using the browser interface in a separate tab. I use Google Chrome and have the GVoice extension so I didn't need to do that.
The idea to get texts moving back and forth while both are checked without leaving so they can't uncheck (which they won't do if you stay in the windows).
Once you get the flow of traffic going, then leave those settings windows and never, ever go back to them. It's a cheap fix and a house of cards of sorts (i've accidentally undone my own work twice), but it does work.
Ok..this is what I discovered for me. I have an Evo3D flashed to boost and I have the same google voice number going to it as I do the touch. I was looking at my settings online and suddenly the box for receiving text to the 3D was unchecked so I rechecked it. Well when I did that my messages started going through the stock messaging app on the 3D . So I decided to uncheck both my Touch and my 3d in the settings online to receive text and now I'm getting my text back through the google app. This makes no sense but its working right now.

I suspect it'll be fixed in the next update or two.
If you didn't mind going through the WHOLE set up process again, you could find and download an older apk and just go back to a bug-free version. I have a transparent themed one and an inverted one from before the latest update and they worked fine before I updated it (ever since, they are screwed up).

Little Clarifications Please:
1) Using CUSTOM ROM or Stock ROM?
2) Using Stock messaging App or any others?
I'm assuming you'r using default stock messaging app in STOCK ROM.
May be try opening Messaging, Press Menu key and go to Settings, under the settings there will be notification settings. Check those.

I'm not sure how is this then.
May be Check whether it's similar to this.
Also, Check you notification volume and Also make sure the there is some ringtone selected in these apps as well.
Since Go SMS works fine i think it's ostly an issue due to the setting in Stock Messaging app.

Messaging app lag?

Just wanted to see if anyone else has been experiencing the same thing. I haven't experienced any lag with this phone whatsoever except for the stock messaging app.
1) Sometimes when I open the messaging app, the preview of a text messaging thread may be from many hours ago and then "refresh" itself to the most recent text. Essentially when I open the app, the preview shows a much older text message and then after a couple seconds will show the most recent one.
2) Sometimes when I push send on a message, it will take a second before the text is actually sent so if I continue to text, it will add on to the previous message until sent.
The only way I've found to correct this is to switch to the "SMS/MMS" tab, which seems to correct the lag, but of course any time you push the back button out of the app, it goes back to the deault "all messages" tab when opening. I also tried holding down the tab titles and it brings you to a screen which it almost looks like HTC was going to give the option to remove other tabs but the boxes cannot be unchecked.
Anyone else running into these issues? Find a solution?
Yeah ive noticed the same weirdly enough I don't feel lag when using sliding messaging app or textra

I don't recall having any of those issues but for me what happens is when I open the message app, in the list of people I've been texting, it shows their phone number for a second, and then it switches to their name. And it only happens once in a while. Like right now, it's not happening. Weird

I have these two issues.
This stock HTC Messages app automatically closes when you back out of sending a reply message, so it doesn't refresh the preview list like previous HTC phones on a reply. On the same token, it appears that it completely quits the Messages app, requiring you to load the names from the Contacts app when you open the Messages app without replying to a message. If you press Home rather than Back, when you open the Messages app again, it loads the messaging screen with the contact you most recently messaged, the person to whom you just replied. If you open the app and send a message, then press Back, it loads the list again, and everything is all good. It's all very odd.
Well glad to see I'm not the only one. I had tried Handcent, Chomp, etc with nothing but lag and other issues. Thanks to the response from NSRpxndxhou, I tried Textra and actually really like it. Best replacement text app I've tried.
I like how HTC's stock messaging app looks, but it ended up simply being too slow. I switched to Textra, enabled the dark theme and never looked back. Silky smooth performance, even with giant threads.
I am in the middle of an email conversation with the guys at Textra. I love the app. But my group messages are not working correctly. Those guys are great. Within one day I got an email with an update to try.... make that two updates. Just got another one while typing this.

Textra does seem nice, but there are a couple things I would miss from the stock messaging app. I like the ability to search ALL your text messages to find a specific text. I also prefer to have the time stamp on each and every text like the stock application does. I also don't like how it shows the contacts phone number below their name.
I would likely use this as a stock replacement if they were able to integrate all those features.

You may want to consider going into messaging->settings->general and adding a text limit (default at 200). When you do this you will notice your messaging to be a bit more zippy. This is because its not trying to open all of your old previous messages (which can be in the thousands).

I had a Messaging app issue when I had too many messages, which was fixed by deleting them, but that whole "reloading" issue seems to be separate.
Even with a few messages, it tends to reload upon reopening the Messaging app. Really weird why it does it...

Had this issue as well, found out that if you go to the stock messaging app settings > MMS > then connection settings, this gives you the APN. Copy that URL and paste it in the Textra MMS settings. Mines worked flawlessly ever since. Not experiencing any lag like the stock messaging app, and have noticed no difference in features.

[Q] G3 oddities

Generally very happy with new G3 (on Optus network in Australia), but two weird things driving me nuts.
1. With several apps open, hit the home button. All good, end up on home screen. Then hit the open apps button and it says 'No recent apps'. Repeat above steps and now it shows all those running apps and you have an enabled option to Clear All or can individually swipe them off.
Any one else seeing this. Never saw this with Nexus 5 I just lost and replaced with G3.
2. The keyboard entry on the Nexus 5 (if I recall correctly) worked pretty much the same for emails as it did for say SMS messages or Hangouts messages. i.e. if you had a bad typo you could position back into the word and all suggested corrections appeared to allow you to replace the typo. This is how SMS/Hangouts works but seems other text entry functions don't do this correction process the same way. Is it up to each app developer to control how this works or do they all use the common keyboard text entry 'widget' or control??
3. Hangouts. Seems that all of a sudden (probably an app update?) Hangouts (which I have selected as my default messaging app) tries to send a Hangouts message instead of a regular SMS. This is fine if the received has Hangouts activated on their device/account, but many of my contacts don't and I've suddenly realised they what I thought were SMS messages sent correctly have just gone into the ether. So step by step, if I go to Hangouts, search for a contact, select contact and start typing, I can see that it is telling me it's sending a Hangouts message, not an SMS. If instead I explicitly scroll in Hangouts through my contacts, and select one, it pops up their contact details and I get the option to select a message icon. When I now get back to start typing the message, it now shows the mobile number it will SMS (not Hangout message) to. This works fine, but is different behaviour to a week ago.
For all of the above, apologies if I simply don't understand the apps or OS fully yet. Learning ...
You can either clear all of swipe each to kill the app.
The stock keyboard sucks in my opinion. I use the Google keyboard without any issues.

Thanks - but my issues is that it says no active apps, and the Clear All button is greyed out. Repeat the process and now the apps which I know are open, are all there. The question is why first display of apps thinks there is nothing there.

Install a 3rd party keyboard, then set your new keyboard to be the default keyboard. Now restart your device and Disable the stock keyboard with something like titanium backup, reboot once more to be sure it is gone and notice how much smoother everything is... Most lag disappears... Just goes to show how crap the stock keyboard really is...

I've noticed this as well, only ever happens when I have more than a couple of apps open, it's like the phone fails to register what apps are open or something, but as you said if I try doing it again, they appear there open
Very strange, probably just a bug or something that will be fixed in a Firmware update...

Yeah me too. Even after complete restore to stock.
Recent app menu is some funny bug.
And about your keyboard. I'd ditch it for google keyboard and lag will be gone.

Yeah I caved to pressure today and switched to TouchPalX. I've had it for years but decided to give the default LG keyboard a go, but after today's update I just gave up. Now, I've never had a smoother typing experience in my life!

Unable to use Facebook Messenger as SMS app

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I literally cannot find anything on this. I've been looking for a better texting app ever since I realized that my favorite SMS app Google Messenger horribly compresses all of my MMS files and there is no way of changing that. At first I though it was my phone (HTC M8) since before I did not have this issue, but I've upgraded it to the HTC 10 and it does the same thing. I've been using Chomp because its somewhat the best overall app I've found. I tried Textra, but every now and then it fails to send/receive messages for around 3 minutes, and when it finally does send my message, it'll just flood me with all the messages I should've been receiving during that time all at once. I tried Yaata as well but I was having issues with the group SMS feature on it. I recently found out that the Facebook Messenger app has re-integrated the SMS feature on it, but for some odd reason, I cannot get the setting to pop up on my phone. I'm fully updated, no root/exposed, I've tried reinstalling the FB Messenger app, I even installed the native Facebook app to see if it was that it needed to sync with my account or something, but nothing has worked. There is still no option for me to use Facebook Messenger as a default SMS app on the settings, or even send texts through. Has anyone ever encountered this issue?
First of all, who is your provider? I'm on AT&T, and their MMS size limit is 1MB. I was having the same issues with Textra and had to tweak a couple of the settings. I changed the size to 1MB and the other setting to 'System". Everything works great. You could always try going into the HTC Messages app and changing the MMS size, and then trying Google Messenger again? As for FB Messenger, this may be stupid, but is your phone number confirmed in the Settings page? I haven't tried that app yet for SMS.

Oops, could've sworn I mentioned T-Mobile somewhere, guess it slipped my mind. It's T-Mobile. I believe the stock HTC app actually sends MMS fine as well, just not on Google Messenger.
On the Textra issue, I used to think it was a regular SMS issue, but now that I think back, it might've been an MMS only issue since it happened to me on a group text. I can't really recall if it happened on regular one on one SMS.
And yeah, it's confirmed. I double checked on the settings and when I reinstalled it, it asked me to make sure it was correct. There's apparently (from some screenshots I've seen) a whole section on the tab all the way to the right on FB Messenger that just says SMS, but it's definitely not on my screen.

Try doing this.... Settings > Apps > Top Right Corner "Configure Apps" > Default Apps > Choose Messenger for Default Messenging. I didn't do it, but FB Messenger is listed under the choices. Maybe that will kick in the SMS Settings?
...it worked. I can't believe I forgot to check that. Thank you so much!
Hi I'm having the same problem, but "Messenger" isn't listed under the choices for Default messaging apps. Is there a way I can force it to be recognised as an SMS app?
EDIT: I figured it out - For some reason I never received the prompt to give Messenger SMS permissions. Once I went into Settings > Apps and enabled the permissions, everything was sorted!

This did it for me. I feel like this is an HTC 10 thing because on my Nexus 6P I was prompted with the permission request and SMS option right off the bat, whereas on the 10 I had to manually set it up.
