Something's draining my battery faster than it's charging

I have a dock at work that I place my phone onto every day as soon as I arrive. I noticed at about 11 AM today that my phone was showing 72% battery, even though it should have been fully charged when I left this morning at 9 and had been sitting on the charger since 9:30. More annoyingly, it seems to be staying at about that level--it's not moving up at all. If anything, it's continuing to lose charge even as the icon shows it's charging!
I took it to a Sprint store, where they unhelpfully suggested that I have too many apps installed that are draining the battery in the background. I manually stopped most of them, uninstalled some that I don't really use, and put it back on the charger. It's still not going anywhere. I turned the phone completely off for an hour and charged the thing, and it had gained about ten percent (that seems pitiful, but at least it's charging?). It's back on the charger, still not really moving anywhere.
So what are my options at this point? I've never calibrated the battery, so maybe I need to do that. Other than that all I can think is that either the battery is going bad (but I have a feeling Sprint is going to insist "It's still charging" if I take it back to them and refuse to give me another battery), or perhaps the dock is not supplying the right voltage and hence it's not charging fast enough to overtake the power consumption.
What's bugging me is that I haven't installed anything in the past week that should be affecting my power consumption like this. Last week I had plenty of apps installed with GPS and bluetooth always on, and as long as the phone was docked it would eventually reach 100%. Now I have pretty much everything off, several apps I usually have running turned off, and several more uninstalled (including Lookout Security), and the battery is barely making any headway. I keep the screen on to a desk clock (because that's the whole point of a freaking dock), but that alone shouldn't be draining it faster than it can charge.
Any suggestions?

Sounds to me like its not getting enough voltage. When you charge it at home does it charge reasonably fast?

I never really monitor it, but I would say so, yeah. All I really check is that it's fully charged in the morning before I walk out the door.
The culprit might be my dock. It says it's designed specifically for the GSII but the cable itself looks to just be your standard USB-to-microUSB dock, other than a little bump at the bottom so that it's clearly aimed for bottom-charger phones like an iphone or SGSII. I suspect it might be supplying less voltage than the charger that came with the phone.
Is there anything I can look at (app or internal setting) that can tell me what kind of voltage the phone is receiving?
EDIT: Should also note that it's sitting on the dock now and it is at least making positive gains on the battery, albeit at maybe 1% every fifteen minutes. I really don't remember it being this slow before. Perhaps the dock's cable is cheap and is just crapping out over time.

USB charging is about half the speed of regular, wall socket charging. Invest in an OEM charger or one that has similar specs to an OEM one.

USB charges at 150mah while most ac adapters charge at between 750-1000mah.

Well, when I used the my generic LG USB cable it took about 5 hours to reach from 0% to about 40% while shut. So, I changed the cable and viola, charging to full in less than 3 hours while working on it.
So, it seems that the charger is bad quality. Try using the original cable (if possible) or may be the original charger plug.
I guess that's the only solution, because there is no way that the phone is discharging at a faster rate than charging, except when it is connected to an external display. This is the only thing that I encounter where the phone goes dead after a while despite it is connected to the charger...

Yeah, that dock is a POS. I'm not surprised it charges slow as balls too.
Amusingly, my phone has been running on the battery since leaving work for about four hours with the screen off, and it's only at 92%! I must have uninstalled whatever was draining it so quickly.

If you think it's an application draining it, try better battery stats in the market. Might not be the problem but it does help.

That's right. Use Original cable came with your phone.
I've experienced same thing when I tried to charge my D710 over LG micro usb charger thru AC outlet. The charging indicator was showing flash but actually it was not charging or charging speed was not enough to follow the battery usage.
I charged the phone all the night but in the morning it was empty!
Charging through the original Samsung micro usb cable, it never failed. But charging thru LG micro usb failed couple of times.
You can easily check a couple of things -
try to connect micro usb cable to your PC and set the USB mass storage mode.
If we use LG micro usb over samsung phone, it's not perfectly fit and data communication frequently fails. More importantly, Don't even try to odin your phone using LG micro usb.
It's not the issue of charger. It's the cable issue.
Do not use LG Micro USB cable for data communication, but if you want to use for charging, be sure that you hear the connection sound from the phone. If there's no connection sound, the battery won't last long even battery charging status shows the flash.

[Q] Charging issues - CM10.1

I currently have the CM10.1-M3 build from 4/17/13 installed.
For a long while, I have been having major issues charging my Captivate Glide.
My original battery died. It was bloated. I called AT+T and they sent me a replacement. I also bought two high capacity batteries.
If I leave the phone charging about half the time little or no progress is made charging. Lat night I charged the phone for over 8 hours and the charge went from 10% to 14%.
Other times I will wake up after charging it all night and it will say fully charged, but then the instant it is unplugged from the charger, it will drop down from 100% to 20% or less.
Then once every 3 or 4 days it will actually fully charge. But even in that case the charging is slow at best.
I did a full wipe and re-flashed last night and nothing changed. I have tried charging in airplane mode, but that seems to make it worse. I have had a little tiny bit of success turning mobile data off, but otherwise I have tried everything I could think of with no luck.
Has anyone else experienced similar issues, or have any suggestions? Is this a case where I might need to replace the phone entirely?

I did notice a lot longer charge time when hooked up to USB on computer, on my car charger and hooked up to AC I seem to get a lot quicker charge...
What charger are you using?

I have tried a few different chargers. I mostly use a 2.1amp wall charger. I also have a 1 amp wall charger, and a 1 amp car charger. I have tried about 3 different car chargers.
I am really suspicious that the micro-usb port on the phone went bad and that I will need to get the phone replaced.

Charging with AC is gonna be alot faster then with DC. But as far as it being the rom I don't see tthat.. sounds like possibly a loose wire or bad connection when u lay ur phone down

When I charge my Captivate Glide with phone powered up plugged in to the wall, using the supplied wall charger, I've noticed that the battery seems to drain quicker. This is with the original battery, I will be getting an extended battery for my phone. If I power the phone down then charge it in to the wall it charges quickly and seems to take longer draining. This does not happen when charging with the PC.

Bloated battery could just be bad - but it could also be due to overcharging. That's not going to happen unless there is a serious problem with your phone, or possibly a problem with the contacts leading to an incorrect voltage reading. This also may explain your problems charging and sudden jumps in charge %.
Clean your contacts well on the battery side and phone side with a pencil eraser, rubbing alcohol, etc.
I notice a big difference with whatever kernel is shipping with the current M3 cm10.1 build between a 500ma charger and 2amp charger, so I imagine the kernel is set for a 750ma or 1amp charge.

I just got a t-mobile version of the S4 and I'm loving it, but I noticed it is very very slow to charge.
Aside from light to medium usage i didn't touch it much between last night and today. I had it plugged in and charging via USB, but it maybe charged about 40-45% in 6+ hours. My old phone (LG G2X) never took this long to charge.

This was using the Stock T-mobile Rom
I have since rooted and installed CM10 nightly on the phone, It appears to suffer the same issue
Between 9:27 to 10:00 it went from 67% to %74, My LG went from %39 -%56 in about 20 minutes. By those quick number it will take 7 hours to charge the S4 while only 3 to fully charge the g2x
Is this normal? is there anything i can do to fix/test or alleviate this?

The question for you is the source? If you plugged it into your compy, it will take forever as standard compy USB ports (USB 2.0) provide only about 500 mA. The stock S4 charger is 2 Amps.
The fix, plug the phone into the wall using your stock charger. If it is still slow, it is probably your battery. Good luck.

Make sure to use the charger that it came with. Ever since I started using the stock charger my battery charges fast. Also it could be your plug so test it with another just in case.

Yup it was the charger, I have chargers pretty much where ever i go so i just used those. With the stock one it works great but i ran into another issue. I plugged it in and it was taking a really long time to charge with the stock charger, something like 3% in 30 minutes. I had to unplug and plug in the cable again and it charged normally.
Is this something I should worry about?

It could be possible that the cable was not properly seated in the phone, or the charger end was not properly seated in the wall cube. I wouldn't lose sleep over it unless it happens often. Could be a phone problem, but sounds like a one off to me.
Yea my lady like to use my charger with her HTC phone because it "charges faster". The S4 stock charger has the highest amp rating and provides juice at the highest rate to any device. :good:

There are a few factors here.....
1. The charger itself. The original Samsung is a 2A charger. If you use a different one (most are only 1A) it will take twice as long to charge.
2. The USB Cable. Believe it or not, not all cables are the same. With the standard charger and cable you will be able to charge @ 1900mA. Less then 2 hours to fully charge a completely dead battery. But.... plugging some USB cables into the standard charger will limit the charge down to just 600mA.... taking 3x_ longer to charge.
3. The other is the kernel. If you're using a newer custom kernel Samsung has limited to a max of 1200mA with the screen on & full 1900mA with the screen off.
Lastly, you can download an app on the playstore called Galaxy Charging Current. This will show you the charging rate should you want to test your setup.

This man speaks the truth. I use CurrentWidget and set to manual update. Whenever I'm testing cables/chargers, I plug in a known good cable (charges at 1900) to see what the charger is putting out. I do the same with a known good charger (2A - iPad and S4) and test the cables

To power up, you consume Red Bull. But your phone just needs its adaptive fast charger. Rate this thread to express how quickly the Moto E4 Plus can charge. A higher rating indicates that it charges extremely fast.

are you using original charges because mine take usually 120 min to full charge .

Make sure the charger you received has the output at 2A. I've seen some come with 580mA (I don't know why.). It should be 2A, and charge quickly.

this is the specification found from charger

That's correct. I don't know why it's taking so long to charge for you. It should charge a lot faster. I put mine on the charger at 48%, and it was at 93% an about an hour. Maybe it's a defective charger, or even something wrong with the outlet. Does it happen on all outlets you plug it into?

yes i have tried all outlet but same effect on every outlet!
my friend have the same device it does not have any problem at all. so i thought exchanging charger now i have to wait to until the battery is empty.

Fast charging or quick charging can be affected by either the wall charger or the cord itself. Since the specifications on the wall charger look correct I would suggest try another cord.
A lot of the ones you buy at say a gas station, or a grocery store or just poor crappy cords, and only really meant for charging and not even data throughput, just your "basic" charging cords, meaning no fast charge or anything so it can take forever to charge your phone.
I had this issue where had a Samsung fast charge wall charger, that I use on every phone I get, and yes it does work on every phone I have tried it on, so I know it does fast charge.
What I ran up against was the cord being the problem, I went thru like 2-3 different cords before I found one that worked right, and it took me near a month of frustration and trying things before I finally figured out it was the cord, not the wall charger.

I have the same problem too, my moto E4 plus take more than 4 hours to charge (20%--->100%)
I use too the original charger and cord.

What's up fellas? I just got one of these yesterday and it's having some serious charging issues. In my case, it's not the charger, it's the phone. I think the problem is that I just got it and I'm not leaving it alone while charging. Too much setting up going on and stuff like that. Not to mention, I'm a Real Racing 3 junky. When the phone gets hot it slows down the charging to try and stay cool. My 2 amp charger is working fine, but the charge rate the phone is allowing is only around 300-400mAh when it's hot. I was wondering if one of you guys who's phone is charging very fast could try charging it under stress and see if it slows down like mine does. If yours still charges fast while hot, then I'll know that mine is defective and I'll take it back. One quick and easy way to tell is with the Ampere app. I actually made a little review/tutorial for it on YouTube if you'd care to check it out. Anyway, I'd sure appreciate if one of you could let me know if I need to exchange this one. Thanks a lot guys. By the way, I know it's not the charger because it's putting out 1800mAh when I plug it into my S5. Thanks again.

My e4+ took 2 hours with the 10 watt (AC) fast charger that came in the box with it. I'm using a much slower DC USB 2.0 charger in my vehicle and it normally stays status-quo while charging. I can go a solid 4 days between charging, but I normally re-charge the device while I sleep.

I have been using moto e4 plus from last three months and it usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours to charge 100%.

Slow / Inconsistent charging

Charging problems started to occur a month ago on my phone. The problem is that it charges really slowly, but other times normally.
I experienced that if I plug in the phone when the battery is between 20-60% it charges super slowly.
Sometimes it speeds up but more often not.
Here are some screenshots that show that sometimes it takes like 6 hours to charge and sometimes it basically just hovers around a percentage and doesnt do anything. Gets like 10% overnight.
On the second picture you can see that it charges normally till it reaches 55% then it slows down to like 5%/hour speed.
I noticed this while the phone was draining battery even tho it was plugged in while using it.
I bought a new OEM battery and its the same with it aswell. Some chargers charge it quicker, some slower, but the problem occurs with every charger.
What do you guys recommend me to do?

U can also try to recalibrate the battery deleting the data/system/batterystats.bin file

I have used many chargers since I have this problem, but mostly the one that came in the box.
Ill try deleting that file if its possible withouth root.
Edit: It seems i need root for it, so its not an option for me.

Actually brother initially same problem occured with me and it was persisting on the same way load since i come to change my charger now before i was charging it with blackberry passport charger it was really cool and even charges it faster that i mean around 50% faster than the previous charger, but now days m befitted with moto g4+ which meets to charge my lg g3 around 65% faster
But brother dont use any local company pr anypther charger as it may damage the phone display which may come to cost you at high

There are going to be 3 main factors that you want to address:
- Battery
- Charger/charging cable
- Software
It seems you have already addressed your battery. That's usually the #1 culprit, but you've already replaced it so you can rule that out.
The next is the charger and charging cable. This is often overlooked. The stock charger is 5 volts and 1.8 amps (5v 1.8a). Before more advanced smart phones were developed, almost all USB chargers never produced more than a 5v 1.0a charge (most were 5v 0.5a). So you want to ensure you are using at least a 5v 1.8a charger. (I even use my Fire Tablet charger on my G3 which is 5.1v 2.2a, and that works great too). Note that all USB chargers have their output volts/amps printed on them somewhere (usually in very tiny print). The USB cable you are using matters too. The thinner the wire gauge and the longer the cable is, the less power is transmitted. For example, if you're using a thin and cheap 6 foot (2 meter) USB cable on a 5v 2.0a charger, you may only be getting 1.0a of charge from it. If you use a thicker, shorter, and more expensive 3 foot (1 meter) USB cable on that same charger, you ensure you get that full 2.0a of charge (or close to it). The two factors to look for in a USB cable is length (length = resistance = less amps) and wire gauge (not insulation thickness).
The last is software. If you have any way to backup and restore (ie nandroid) your ROM from recovery, I recommend doing that first because it's easy. If you backup your current ROM, factory reset, and the issue persists then you know its the charger/cable. If the issue is gone, then you know it's something in your current ROM. If you do not have access to backup/restore features and/or do not have root, then next you can use the Android OS Battery stats to carefully go over what could possibly be draining so much power when the phone is on or off. There are also several apps that will help you determine where the battery drain is coming from. Note that software can not prevent your phone from charging, but it can drain power so fast, that there is not enough left over to charge the battery. This is especially bad for our G3s because they easily overheat if they are charging and heavily discharging simultaneously.
