Can someone please explain to me what the EXACT difference is between the Verizon Note 4 DE and the stock Verizon note 4 DE.
I'm not a developer or programmer but is there really no way to utilize the discrepancy or software/hardware between the two devices to achieve root or unlocked bootloader??

There is only one difference, besides the model numbers, and that is the unlocked bootloader. When you receive a Developer Edition Note you get exactly the same hardware, software, bloatware etc. that comes with the retail (carrier) version.
Does Developer Edition receive updates in parallel with the standard Note 4?
Second question is whether unlocked bootloader alone allow you to install su, etc and have root? Or are we still in need of some exploit, etc?

No, the DE does not receive updates. You have to do them by hand.
YES! The unlocked bootloader does allow you to install TWRP as well as achieve root. This is the reason I bought mine.
Fine to install manually if the updates are available. Are the updates available then?
Great about instant root access. I don't need a custom ROM with Xposed.

Yes, there is an updated stock (NJ5) firmware that can be ODIN safely for the Developer Edition Note 4.

Where did you get hold of the Verizon dev editon? Samsungs website won't allow me to actually carry out the purchase.

They are out of stock so you'll have to keep checking until they are available again.

So the little disclaimer at the bottom of the N4 DE purchase page about FCC clearance is not actually true?
The backlogged order form is to tell you when they are in. However its not a pre-order and first come first serve. So really its trying to get one is a super challenge at this point. You best bet is to call and ask when the next shipment is coming in and be on the ball several times a day checking the site to order. Its soo worth owning one.

I got it from Samsung's website. I was just lucky enough to get one of the ones in the second wave of them that were released.
Eventually Samsung should make more available but they sure don't seem to be in any hurry.
I recommend you do NOT rely on the "preorder" link on the website at all. After the first wave sold out I put in a "preorder" and I never did get an email saying they were available once the second wave hit. I only knew about it because I made it a habit to check the site every day. Even though I've had the phone for several weeks now I still haven't been notified that it ever did come back into stock.
Sorry, it would sound so stupid to ask but I want to make sure... Does the DE and Retail have same model number? If not, how can I know to find the difference? I looked up on Google for model number and end up with same number with my phone that I bought from Verizon from day 1 when it came out.
You have the retail model since you purchased from Verizon. DE must be purchased directly from Samsung.

Can you screen shot your kernel information in settings and then about phone so I can see what it says for the rooted kernel. And copying the entire system to use it on the other phone is possible. Just depends on certain things.
I guess I should of bought a rooted one myself...........
think that no one has the root yet on this phone, so, pay attention to the instructions that forum masters will give to you. You could be a HERO for the entire Sm-n920a community and users hahahah. Btw, i don't know your knowledge about this things but yes, is possible to do this. Obvious, when someone of the biggest users will teach you how to do what you need, you could share the system clone with us!
Not to mention there's a big donation for anyone that finds a root method. So if you really have a rooted at&t note 5 there could be money coming your way.

Where's this donation? We are close, also luckypatcher works WITHOUT root. Technically we already have root, it just sucks really bad.

I could of sworn I seen a bounty for the n920a like a year ago, but now I'm not finding anything. I should look before I comment apparently. However, much respect TechNyne66. I've been following you working a root method for a while now, and great job on being close.

Do you have a username? I got another member to join in again who says he knows how to complie kernels with ease. So lets hope this gets going! Everything is layed out we just need to get the code written. Remember anything is possible when you put you're mind to it, but this is with code. Kexec has worked in the past for locked bootloaders so I don't see why my notes in theory but plausible.

Can we get a system dump of your partitions? We just need your kernel zImage and I can put it together.
I'd really like to see a dump of the system partition.
Follow a guide a make a full system dump of your rooted phone and then make a nandroid backup.
Upload it to us and we can make a clone. Please!
If you have a real full root. We need your system dump to unlock at&t and Verizon both.

Chill bro I'm working on getting it from him. I've seen accident eng phones released by Samsung before so maybe it happened again.
There's no root for AT&T Note 5 SM-N920A if you are running Marshmallow with the Nov security update! If you are on this version you are screwedededed!!!! I tried every type of way to install firmwares PH4 ==> PH2 and I tried every version of firmware I could find on this planet. I have tried OGG. I have tried crashing my installation, then trying to downgrade.
Long story short; If you have an unlocked SM-N920A running Android 6.01 with Nov Security Patch I will definitely be donating to you if you upload. If you aren't a member of this forum I promise you that you are safe. The guys here will help you make a copy of the firmware which will not include your personal information. (Look for the guys with lots of Thanks, listen to them)
So if you are coming in from Google and you are wondering if you can root or downgrade now you know that you can't. I'm a beginner Android Developer who follows directions like a champion, save your time trying to downgrade it is fully blocked by the bootloader.
unlocked SM-920A upload coming soon

I'm sorry if this is not the right place to post this thread.
After so many tries I was finally able to get my G955U Rooted.
Now I'm looking for a Custom ROM for it. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Agree, truly is sad that we cannot run custom software on the S8+. Just bet it would scream with some well made custom. I am thinking about jumping to the OnePlus 5t when it comes out this month. If they stay true to previous releases the boot loader should be unlocked and from a quick XDA search there seems to be a pretty good developer community. Just hate ole Sammy is becoming more like crapple everyday.
Hi there !
I am a veteran ROM installer Thinking of buying used samsungs for the family.
I am looking at used S9's, but wanted to ask, which versions of the S9 to avoid when considering simple flashing, bootloader unlocking, and TWRP installations ?
That way I don't burn money for nothing.
Thanks !

Get international Samsung S9 only one that comes with the option to oem unlock in developer settings to be able to flash twrp magisk and custom roms or GSI (but you wouldn't need to do that thiers plenty of custom roms for the S9)

Gotcha, International Version. But how do I recognize what is International ? Is there a special device code that I need to look for on the back of the device, or on the box ?

Oh no. Eek.
I've just bought a g960F/DS version. Am I going to have problems trying to do the things you said?
I think I can take the phone back tomorrow if so. I saw the "F" and thought I was good to go, but is "F/DS" a weird version that will only have limited support for ROMs etc?
Thanks in advance.

The thing is though, what had made me go ahead was that I'd read somewhere that Lineage supported g960F/D.
I'll try and find the link but, in case you're reading this now, does that sound impossible?
EDIT: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/starlte/
Supported models
SM-G960F
SM-G960F/DS
SM-G960N

I've flashed roms many times before but not for ages and I've forgotten what oem unlock even means.
Does the fact that Lineageos is supported mean that in fact there IS oem unlock? And does that mean that I can use most other roms too and basically have the same flexibility that I would have if I had a g960F?
There's this too, PoochyX: Putting LineageOS on a Samsung Galaxy S9 (SM-G960F/DS)
Is it worth the upgrade to OUI 2.5 over staying at Bootloader 3 with 2.1 waiting for possible root in the future or no? I've been holding off updates for it but wondering still since rarely I have gotten root on a Snapdragon Samsung phone (cept a S7 just a few months back)
Nothing in One UI strikes me as, oh, earthshattering. I'm not into photography so the improvements there don't matter to me. I don't use Dex so wireless Dex isn't meaningful. Google can help you find articles detailing everything that's new in One UI 2.5. If some of what you read sounds good for you, then I'd suggest upgrading.
But like you, I don't root anymore, so there's no need to preserve older boot loaders.

It's a tradeoff. Installing a custom recovery, the way I remember rooting, trips Knox. For me, the secure folder is more important. But I recognize different people have different priorities.
EDIT: Magisk came along after I quit the rooting game, and I've recently read through the steps for rooting without a custom recovery. I might give this a whirl someday.
