Installing latest security updates without upgrading to Android 7.1.2 - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I don't want to upgrade to Android 7.1.2, but I want the latest (April) security update for Android 7.1.1.
Is this possible without root?
Otherwise it's a shame.

Google still provides 7.1.1 with the latest security updates. If you want to go the OTA route that doesn't require wiping data, follow the directions at the top of the page in the first link.

Upgrade problems

I just bought this phone yesterday, mostly because it is supposed to have nougat available. When I try to update I get the message that I have the latest software, but it's August security patches. When I try to flash any updates in recovery through ADB I get errors. Can anyone help me out here?
What is your software channel? If It's RETUS, we should get it tomorrow.

you need to be at the December patch before you can install Nougat.
you can download the security patches from https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/moto-z-play-reteu-firmware-otas-t3557917

I'm actually having the same exact issue. Which firmware do I flash if im Blur_Version.24.41.52.addison.retail.en.US and have a RETUS phone?

I'm not sure if you have to flash just the latest patch or whether you have to flash all that are available before you flash Nougat (Blur_Version.24.231.19.addison.retail.en.US)
Blur_Version.24.41.25.addison.retail.en.US is the August 2016 patch. this is what's on your phone now.
Blur_Version.24.41.47.addison.retail.en.US is the October 2016 patch
Blur_Version.24.211.9.addison.retail.en.US is the November 2016 patch
Blur_Version.24.221.12.addison.retail.en.US is the December 2016 patch

I tried to flash every single ota and always get an error. For example, this is the error i get when trying to flash the October 2016 patch:
Do I need to mount the system?
Build number and hardware version.
Other one didn't take.

I just got my phone on Thursday from Best Buy and I'm having the same issue as you. I even have the same fingerprint, which doesn't match up to any of the finger or thumb prints in the OTAs that were linked. That is the issue here. I'm trying to decompile the October OTA, change the required thumbprint (which is why it is failing), re-zip and sign the OTA. In theory it should work but I can not get the signature on the OTA to stick. If I figure it out, I will post a link to the new file. But if I can't and you figure out a way to force the OTA, let me know. Thanks!!!
I'm probably going to just give up and unlock my bootloader tomorrow and flash linage or something. Kind of ticked that this phone won't take updates. Either that or return it for a G5.
I just got the notification for the update, guess I'll give it a shot.

Did your phone take the update?
Yes, finally

Do I take this update?

So I just got the Galaxy Tab S4 SM-T830...
Currently, it's sitting on Android Ver. 8.1.0
Build No. M1AJQ.T830XXU1ARH5
Android Security Patch June 1, 2018
It's asking me to update to the T830XXU2ARJ3 Build Number Oct. 1, 2018 Security Patch...
Do I take the update? I don't want to lock down the device by accepting anything that I shouldn't. I might want to root and install custom ROMs in the future, so that's why I'm asking first.
Thanks in advance!

I have not rooted or installed TWRP. I did upgrade my SM-T835C to U2ARJ3 and I have "OEM Unlock" available in Developer mode. Again I am all official right now. (I have not decided if I want to break AirWatch with this tablet yet or not ) Now if there was a way to keep AirWatch Hub working then that would make want to root faster!
Can anyone confirm whether taking the update will prevent future flexibility with rooting, non stock ROMS etc? Also, can anyone shed any light on what updates/improvements/benefits the update includes (outside of security patch)? Any insight much appreciated!
Sorry to bump but still very curious! Been checking this thread for updates since I asked a while back. Any noteworthy improvements? Still haven't updated.
I didn't even think about the bootloader version before installing TWRP. I just installed it today on T830XXU2ARK4. After installing TWRP, trying to boot into android caused a bootloop until I installed magisk.

How to stay in Marshmallw and get security updates?

Hi, I just bought a new MZP, still on v6.0, Magisk rooted and TWRP installed.
I have disabled system upgrade to avoid battery drain in 7 or 8. My question is, how do I get security upgrade if I stay on V6? Is there flashable zip from Moto?
Thanks for any tips,

No way to do this, especially on stock rom, to get the last security update from motorola (which is Little older) you will need to update all system updates from them, standalone security updates os feature that get announced on android q which is not officially update by motorola.

Unfortunately no, it doesn't work like that.. The security update and OS update are not modular components, you can't mix and match to suit preference/taste.
If you want the security update you will have to download (and install) the update that is provided in it's entirety.

No more updates since 1st January?

I've bought this phone earlier this year (at a big store) and I haven't received an update. I haven't rooted/modified ROM/unlocked bootloader or anything. I used it as it is.
But the thing is that the phone can't connect to the OTA updates, and it should have at least find the latest security patches. What is wrong?

Actualy there is a more recent Pie build with march patches : https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=82210047&postcount=158
It's weird that the OTA is not working.
I recently flashed Oreo stock rom ( miflash) and upgraded to Pie over OTA, i could only get the 10.18 version, probably other update is pulled to, it was 75mb , maybe just security patch and some software to prepare upgrade to android 10
