Hi folks
I'm considering getting the S III but am not sure about the screen durability as i've heard a lot of mixed reviews. How durable is it? Looking at some break tests on youtube suggests that the screen is a lot more sensitive as compared to other phone. Is that true?
btw, what is a good case for this device ?
Thanks!

I dunno if this counts, but I keep dropping mine and the only damage so far is a little scratching on the corner of the outer plastic bezel when I dropped it once pretty hard on some rough tar. I haven't seen any other blemishes on the case, and so far no scratching at all on the glass. I loved my Nexus One, but the glass on that scratched pretty easy just sitting in my pocket. Not so with the SIII, no scratches at all on the glass in the 3 mo I've had the phone.
I don't have a case for it.
Bigger the screen... The easier its going to break. Simple.

+1 but on the flip side I always baby my phones and with the sgs3 its slim and fits in the pocket just fine. So no issues here for me and this awesome screen.. I highly recommend it to you.

The gorilla glass on this phone is garbage. ive never dropped a phone and a couple of weeks ago i slid it into my pocket and my pocket was broken. It fell like 2 inches from the ground on to pavement and wrecked the display and the bezel is all dinged up. gonna fix the display and get rid of it

Similar experience...phone dropped from my pocket while sitting, landed on the corner, cracked screen...probably hit the weak spot on the phone, regardless, shouldn't break that easily IMO..
It is not durable at all compared to my previous phones (gs2, hd2) if you drop it there will be serious cosmetic damage. The plastic is extremely soft.

Get an Otter Box, you pay that much for a phone then spend an extra 50 bucks to keep it safe.
Get a case if your gonna pick up the GS3... its a beautiful phone but you need to make sure you can protect it... I dropped my phone 4 times since I got it and thank God I bought a case for it. If I didn't have one, then my screen would have been shattered already

Op, keep in mind all these guys who broke their displays are a small percentage of a whole.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
yea that's why i'm hesitant in buying it (3 actually). The issue seems widespread and if it is a case of bigger screen then it is a serious design flaw or maybe a manufacturing flaw. At this point im probably going to put off buying this phone but let's see if things change

Do not have it yet, but Im going for the otterbox defender. Only negative I have heard from some is that the built-in screen protector lacks a bit in terms of looks on screen. Can always remove that tho.

I just bought the generic case from T-Mobile store... its grey. I mean its okay. It gets the job done but I'm looking to get the seidio case with kickstand. I just found that on the top left hand corner of my phone, I have a tiny dent on the side... its irritating the hell outta me but I only see it when I take the case off... guess it could be worse...

I feel like the S II was way more durable. But that's why I bought insurance for this phone. Never had insurance on any other device. And the fact that I have an extended battery and there really aren't any good cases for extended batteries made me get the insurance.

It's a phone and it uses glass, it doesn't matter what phone it is if your looking at Youtube and their hitting it with a hammer or dragging a razor over the screen then it's gonna do as expected. It's almost comical that people do these tests considering you spend money on the phone you should be responsible for it and take care of it. Accidents happen and the carriers know this so instead take care of your property, it doesn't matter who made it or what some moron with a hammer says.
all that is fine but generally speaking one does expect some level of durability for a device that costs upwards of $700 dollars, specially if the company is touting the latest and greatest gorilla glass 2 as one of the main features of the phone. Cellphones break when dropped, everyone should know that. But the amount of complaints i've come across regarding the S III and the different ways the screen is getting damaged is quite abnormal to say the least.
Anyway, i'm still debating whether i should pass on this phone or go for it. Anything new coming up in the coming weeks?

You never hear the whole story either when people give these reviews, "I had it in my pocket and the screen cracked" turns into I was drunk and fell down the stairs.
I still have all of my devices in perfect shape and it all comes down to how well someone takes care of their things. If your gonna carry the phone in your pocket with your car keys then its gonna happen, I see it all the time and like you said at $700.00 you should act like it's worth it. You want an honest opinion on the device? It's worth every penny but the one thing that would make me warm and fuzzy about it is if HTC built the body. It still feels solid but theres nothing like a well built frame like you would find on the One S or X. No other device comes close to the functionality and multitasking that this one does and I own 8 myself (different devices not all cells.)
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
yup the One X is really nice too. Too bad t-mobile doesn't carry it.
I'm going to call t-mobile again and see if i could get a better deal on the S iii's than what they offered me ($179 per phone)
Hi all!
Having seen Zagg EXTREME Invisible Shield torture test video filmed at Best Buy on the SGS3 (on YouTube - I am not allowed to post the link here), I was impressed to seek out this product for the GN2. I found it locally but I noticed that it didn't say "Extreme" anywhere on the box. I didn't purchase. I decided to call Zagg and inquire further. What I was told is that if the product does not say EXTREME on the outside cover of the box, it isn't that version of the product. Glad that I didn't have that product installed thinking that they were the same!
Extreme is a separate entity that was not made for every device, unlike the regular Invisible Shield product which is virtually made for many devices. The difference according to the Rep with whom I spoke, is that EXTREME can hold up to what we saw in the torture test, whereas the flagship product is merely a scratch-resistance product.
I contacted the interim head of the company and got the "standard issue" response from the secretary. They don't make that product for the GN2. They don't have a date for release of said product. And they don't know IF they will ever make the product for the GN2. That is not wise.
Here we have a product which covers the phone entirely, allows us to keep the beauty of the phone without an ugly case and makes the phone virtually impervious...and they don't know IF they want to make this product for the hottest phone on the market?
Apparently they don't "get it." Time to bring out the brigade. While I am but one end-user, I represent a great many of us who would love this product rather than an ugly, bulky case to detract from the beauty of this beast. If you feel the same, Please contact Zagg, Inc and ask them to please rush the Invisible Shield EXTREME for the SGN2 to market. There is an email addy for the CEO on Zagg's website also. i dislike zagg too but their dry shields are actually really nice and there is no chance of liquid damage while putting them on.
I prefer ExtremeGuards to Zagg. I have ExtremeGuard on my Echo that's still in perfect condition, even after knocking my pocket knife blade first onto it. The Zagg on my Photon didn't last a month before the back started to peel off.
So of course I got ExtremeGuards for my Note 2 and it's held up remarkably well to the S Pen

Thank you Casperi (and everyone for your responses). I simply cannot see putting my beautiful phone inside an enclosure. Aside from that impressive YouTube (Best Buy) torture test what really sold me on getting film was remembering that I had a similar product on my CLS. My car got "attacked" one rainy night by a runaway grocery cart (funny now, but not funny then since I had designo paint, lol). I cringed on impact. (Ok, so I actually cursed, but it wasn't ladylike, k?) I got out and inspected the damage. It was horrible. It looked like Wolverine had run by in one of his fits and swiped it. Next day, I took my baby into the dealership who said they didn't think the damage had gone through. Drove down to the Car Armor shop, lo and behold they peeled the film off and NOTHING...not even a skid mark was there. I suspect that the Zagg EXTREME product is a lower grade, but similar film. Anyway, it's a moot point since it isn't available now.
Update: I called the Car Armor shop and they are going to install that product on my phone for me! They do it all the time for their clients who are having their cars done. I know how good this stuff is firsthand. I am confidant that it will work well in this application.
I want more than just scratch resistance for my phone. I want to know that if I happen to drop it, the screen won't be shattered. So, this turn of events is probably a godsend. Gyrlz like pretty phones that stay pretty...and tough!
So, can you please share that Car Armor shop address and/or phone #?
Thank you.
WTF.... What am I reading?? Ya let us ALL know about this stuff so I can put this ****t on my whole car... Then I won't even have to have my vehicle insured!! Think of the LONG term here everybody!! :silly:
I love my note 2 but it's hardly the hottest phone on the market. The s3 has sold 60+million units and the note 2 is just above 5 million.

C'mon now Kush...How long has the s3 been out? The note GN2 is at 5 million in 2 months. And that on the heels of the S3 being a hot seller and those buyers being tied to contracts. Plus, the GN2 had form factor issues to overcome in the buyer's minds. Whereas the S3 is an average size phone. Not to spread it on too thick but, the GN2 has also accomplished the unthinkable. People are actually dumping their iPhones and getting the GN2 or changing their minds about getting the iPhone and getting the GN2 instead. I hear it from people daily. "I was going to get the iPhone but..." It's a hot phone and it lives up to the hype (Well, Tmo users got shafted on Multi-Windows and LTE for a bit but I heard that it's coming.). I'm giving you a hard time, Kush, lol! I really love my GN2. But back to Car Armor, lol

Both companies offer touch-ups if needed. For example when they replaced my front fender covering after the Wolvie incident, they didn't charge me! Plus, they added on door sills and the handle cups (you ever notice how you get those scratches in the doorknob handle cup - from fingernails, keys etc? Well, they covered that little area with the film too! So cool!) That's it guys! The gyrl's eyelids are heavy now, lol

Hi, lets put aside "lol it will blow your house" thing...
The main reason i want this phone is screen (well also having a samsung vr would be interesting)
What do u guys think besides that what reasons u guys wont recommend me to buy this phone?
thanks!
It's the best phone currently made, so really no reason not to get it. I think the main thing I don't like is the non-removable battery, which had Samsung put a removable battery in it then the whole recall thing would have been as simple as them sending us a new battery. But overall there is very little to complain about with the phone and a ton of things to like.
The lack of IR blaster is very disappointing.
The credibility of Samsung after the recall.
Question of future updates.
Light leak under the curved glass.
Saying all that I'm still waiting patently for my replacement..
Doesn't make wet coffee only dry. Makes a mess of washing my car.
BUY IT and love it......I have never been so black and white before. Just try and buy one, its hell!
Go go go and get the Note 7........

Anyone that lacks mental bandwidth to use a real phone. In that case I recommend that person to go buy an Iphone where it requires nothing more than swipe, swipe, swipe, swipe, swipe, swipe, swipe and press.
the only reason I can think about somebody not geting a note 7 is not having the money to do it.......
How common is this "light leak" issue? My note gets here tomorrow and I want to make sure it doesn't have any build quality issues. I went through 3 s6s and got stuck with one with a wobbly home button and asymmetrical screen.

My previous Note 7 had the gap (the same gap described as expansion in the user manual and did indeed leak light) Replacement does not have the expansion gap at all, in fact it is just like the S7 Edge in that it is bonded entirely. Very happy with my replacement.

So when I get the phone I just need to check the sides where it curves and make sure the glass is sealed tightly against the metal with no gap?

Also.. Anyone have any luck with a protector working with a case yet? I want the neo hybrid case.
Curved screen makes it almost impossible to get a good screen protector and especially a good screen protector/case combination that plays nice. No IR blaster, no removable battery, audio is pretty crappy (standard crappy, not particularly crappy compared to other phones that aren't enhanced like the HTC and LG flagships), curves on screen get annoying when using s-pen, probably will never get s-off... That's about all I can think of. Oh, and occasional lag which I don't think should happen in today's day and age with these processors and RAM amounts. It's probably just Samsung and their TouchWiz... I think the HTC 10 and LG V10 seem smoother, honestly. Not a huge deal though.

This is only reason I can really think of depending on what you are coming from. I had one before the recall and that one was even worse than this one. I get this with my Nexus 6P which is a year old. I love everything else about it, dunno what people are doing to get 4-5 hours of SOT differently than I am.
Its the best phone out bar none.
That said i find the edge screen useless and annoying...cant even use a glass screen protector. I would prefer a flat screen.
I would prefer a flat 6" screen actually lol.
Would be nice if it had front firing stereo speakers also....my nexus 6 and 6P kill the note in sound.
Other than that i couldnt think of anything else someone may not like about it.

Don't get the Note 7. You've already talked yourself into how terrible it is. In fact, don't get any phone, I don't think there is ever going to be one made that would keep you anywhere near glass half full stage.
The phone comes with screen protectosr preinstalled. Both back and front.
One main reason I can think of at least for me is sound quality. Sound quality is not the greatest by far. Hands cover the speaker a lot when holding it. Although it is because the phone is water resistant but still. There is a dual speaker mod though that I have yet to try that could help with this
i have the phone and i like it, but there are definitely reasons not to buy it.
1: you can get a OnePlus 3 for less than half the price, and the only areas the Note 7 "wins" in are subjective stuff like screen quality (i don't believe the human eye can see the difference between 1080p and quad HD) or "i like having a stylus". the Note 7 camera is better, but mostly in low light situation, and the gap isn't nearly as big as Android blogs (and Samsung owners) make it out to be.
2: TouchWiz has cleaned up but it's still not as smooth as just about every other OS out there. people hate on LG, well i'm using a LG V20 right now and it's definitely smoother and snappier than the Note 7. OnePlus 3 too, is smoother than the Note 7.
with that said, the phone IS beautiful to look at. the edge display give it a really cool bezel-less effect, but it's not practical (edge features are redundant) AND makes the phone more likely to break than "normal" phones.
if money is no issue or you are a gadget geek who just like to own the biggest, most hyped it product (i belong in the this group), then by all means, the Note 7 is a worthy purchase. but to the very average consumer, like, say my middle-aged mom? i wouldn't advise her to buy the note 7 for $850 when there are $400 phones that more than gets the job done for daily use.

plastic screen protector works, but yeah, no temper glass ones.
i've tried a few temper glass protectors, they either don't cover the sides, or cover the sides but lack adhesive in the middle, which makes the screen less responsive, especially when typing.
For me it would be the green battery icon All other things I can live with (facepalm)

I got my phone for 200 bucks so what i'm saying next is with the price in mind:
To be honest, with the included cover the scratch issue is not that big of a deal
The bend test is an over kill. just don't sit on your phone.
This phone rocks for the price. (I'll say better than my galaxy s7) The only thing i miss is the faster lens on the s7.
The people who take JerryRigEverything's "durability tests" seriously are simply put, dumb. The videos he make are for pure entertainment purpose. Who lights up their phone's screen with a lighter? Are there still people who wouldn't protect their screen with a protector anyway? And seriously who the heck tries to bend their phone in half even if you're a rough user. Dumbness is taking over the people.
I own Honor 6X from about a month, I have about 10 hours SoT daily on my phone. With that kinda usage, I have 0 scratches so on my screen or back so far. And of course no freakin "bends" like it's a metal ruler lol.

There's no excuse for the s-h-i-tty glass used on the Honor 6x. None of the 50 phones he tested had the glass scratch at level 3 or 4. While I somewhat agree with the bending thing, the glass they used on this phone is pure crap.

It's not really about buying a screen protector or not. It's about the inferior quality of the glass Huawei chose to use on this device. It's the worst ever tested out of 50 phones and it's worse than last years 5x. I literally have a drawer full of phones and this is the first test that actually persuaded me to go out and buy a tempered glass screen protector. I never have felt the need before and the screens on all of my devices are still pristine.

It's not really about buying a screen protector or not. It's about the inferior quality of the glass Huawei chose to use on this device. Lol mate, you're taking JerryRig's stupid (meant for fun) durability tests way too seriously. His tests are not equivalent to day-to-day usage.
Fair point ?

AGREE I DON'T TAKE HIM SERIOUSLY TOO.
But, you need to admit the fact that what ever be the day to day use of a device
there is that one day where things are not in your favor and S#!t Happens.
So, understanding the worst case scenario is not a crime but a reminder what you should expect rather.
CONSIDER:
In my **** day i accidentally drop my phone on the street while getting of a bus in INDIA and a car runs over it
now since JERRY DOES A BEND TEST BOTH THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE PHONE you will have an idea of what kind of damage you should be expecting and
if you should dive in to push your phone away
or
let it be it can handle a car running over it
and
i can get it back with no problem

I can gurantee you that any phone you buy will become a brick if it was run over by a car. There, saved you time watching more videos. Lol

Why argue and waste time rather lets just ask "jerry rigs everything" to throw a google pixel and an Honor 6x under a car. Or lets do it by ourselves but someone will will need to sponsor you to get a free phone to break so yeah we cant pretty much do that can we. HONOR aint sending us a free phone anytime soon so lets see what people do when they get a free one like jerry who practically breaks the phone.
THEN WHY DO I WANT THIS ARGUMENT TO CONTINUE ?
Because my SAMSUNG E500H could manage drops like i dropped it while trying to get a clear snapchat post in a DJ snake concert it practically was being run over by people but it survived with a crack on the digitizer and leaving the LCD un harmed.
Now my HTC 526g+ that had a crappy but decent tempered glass on broke in a simple fall when i missed my pockets and drooped the phone in the METRO.
I have been a person with slippery hands when it comes to phones so it helps me know
like if i got an IPHONE 4s ill cover it in a pillow
if its an OBI WORLDPHONE i will first recollect when was Android 4.4.4 awesome and re-evaluate life's decisions.
if its an honor 6x ill buy a higher quality TEMPERED GLASS and a decent quality PROTECTIVE CASE.
( METAL BODY ALLOWS FOR SOME SERIOUS DAMAGE INTAKE ).
if it is an GOOGLE PIXEL then i can call F U C K IT and throw it screen side down under a car phones internal will be safe but screen might break.

Im not sure if you are trolling or serious. Let me tell you something, a phone dropped is not similar to a car running it over. Also ive had 4 phones since the last 5 years, first was a blackberry which screen cracked from a simple fall on the street. Second was my galaxy s3 which is still in good condition despite it falling over a million times, and not to mention i still use it from time to time until this day. My newer galaxy s6 which i had a case and a tampered glass protector got its screen fully broken when it fell less than a meter high. Should we now say that samsung flagship device is really good quality (ex s3) or very bad (ex s6)? The truth is its all about how the phone fell, the angle, the type of surface there are too many variables. Now im using my honor 6x without any cover and it is still as brand new. Even though it fell maybe 2 times it still doesnt have a scratch. So chill with these videos they are nothing scientific and only for entertainment

Wouldn't that leave a giant variable for people who want to solve problems related to the exact matter if i consider the angle surface, ETC on which my phone drops and breaks.
I can only test my phone by droping it from a height and then fixing problems right and if we do this process over and over again we get a durable phone right.
SADLY, companies cannot spend that much on just making test models and break them over and over again to make a durable phone that costs more than a kidney
ALSO
Droping an object is not a standardized test and cannot be repeated without minimum human error.

If you think your phones with gorilla glass won't get scratched without a protector, you're not thinking right.

You're right, i wanna get a glass screen protector on top of the plastic one included but I'm too lazy, regardless it's still great for the price range.
Are you planning to install a screen protector for the inside screen?
Seems like someone has done the installation without any issues.

at the moment, no.
the cover plastic said don't put anything on the screen,
the warning during setup said don't put anything on the screen,
the website care instructions say don't put anything on the screen,
yet there i was standing at a samsung experience store being asked if i wanted to buy a protective screen cover for the front, main, and back of the phone. i was confused to all hell.
after a bunch of back and forth, the workers at the store said that the warnings "mean to say" dont use an adhesive screen protector. the one they sell is applied with a spray solution.
my last question to them was "will it void my warranty?", and unfortunately, their answer was "no, it SHOULDN'T void your warranty".
once i heard that type of careful wording, i knew they had no idea what they were talking about, even the manager ( since this purchase was expensive, they had a manager overseeing it).
as of right now, i am still quite careful of how hard i press the buttons and what conditions i bring out the phone in.
if i start to see scratches, i might consider the main screen proctector, but for now, i will keep it as is.
sorry for the long reply. lol
I put one on and have 0 regrets! Comes off really easy and I like the extra piece of mind!

Could you post oictures... I bought the Olixar one but I'm hesitant to put it on...
I have installed 2 different types and this one has been the easiest to install, I have removed 2 of them so far and no residue left behind by the screen protector.
See attached pics of my phone with the screen protector applied. (I did mess up a bit and left couple of small bubbles in there and top left was due to me placing a sticker to remove a dust particle)
This is the one that i bought
https://www.amazon.com/Protector-Hy...2332&sprefix=galaxy+fold+scree,aps,338&sr=8-3
PS. The fingerprint and some of the marks you see are not visible to the naked eye, Camera enhances them a bit and makes it look worst than it actually is.
Olixar easy to install is clear smooth and easy to keep clean

Are you worried about the display getting ruined,? I know it says not to install one.

I removed one as I cocked it up when installing it... it's not over sticky so removes quite easily. So no I'm not too worried

i get protecting your screen and everything, but due to crap fitment and cutting, now the phone looks like the gen.1 galaxy fold.
can anyone chime in, who has tried a screen protector with edge to edge fitment?

I disagree in general use you can't even see the screen protector you have to look really close

the regular msrp. $1980 USD, or $2599 CDN, im in canada so this phone cost $2910 after taxes
i would hold off. if you've already spent that much money on other devices, theres no point being in such a rush.
the new year is here already. pay the remaining off or sell it somehow, have money ready for the new fold 2 (not the clam shell flip phone) if it comes out later this year.
good luck!
