Root error: Can't remount /system - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Hello,
I got an OP3 with latest Open Beta installed. It is rooted via SuperSU ZIP.
Most root apps work, for example "Root Essentials". However, every app that modifies the /system partition does not work. "/system/app mover" gives me the error "could not remount /system", for example. AdAway says "Could not copy host file".
This problem occured on earlier Open Beta builds as well.
Mounting /system R/W via "Root Essentials" doesn't work either, it does give me a "successfully mounted" message but modifying /system still doesn't work.
Has anyone got a solution for this problem?

Push

OxygenOS does this to me sometimes. There is one thing that helps (sometimes):
1. Boot into recovery.
2. Go into mount
3. Untick keep system read-only (If it's unticked tick and untick it again)
4. Remount system (tick the box next to /system, if it's ticked, untick and retick it)
5. Reboot
Also which root solution are you using? Magisk or SuperSU?
Which ROM are you on? I have only seen this problem on OxygenOS.

Did not work sadly. I am on latest OOS with SuperSU

Got the same issue, does anyone know how to fix?

Haven't found a solution yet Don't want to change ROM, OOS is so stable and pretty

Any fix for this yet this happen to a buddy on mian .

Use magisk SuperSU is not mantained anymore

SU/ROOT privileges problem after rooting

Phone: Incredible 2, running Android 2.3.3 Stock Verizon ROM
S-OFF and Rooted : using revolutionary 0.4pre4
HBoot: 6.13.1002
Recovery: Revolutionary CWM 4.0.1.4
I'm having ROOT Access/SU problems. I need access to some files in the root/System/ directory and am unable to get r/w.
I s-off/rooted my Incredible 2 using the instructions on this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1219246 (The How To Root DInc2) and the instructions on the revolutionary.io website. (Essentially: Get S-Off via revolutionary> flash recovery CWM> flash su.2.3.6.3-efgh)
The revolutionary s-off process was successful and I got s-off.
I flashed Superuser su.2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip and seem to have Root. The binaries are upto date according to the app.
I have Titanium Backup, Root Check, BusyBox Installer installed. I had to install Busybox. All these apps run properly. I can wipe, backup, and install system app data via Titanium Backup. Root Check says I have root access and the correct Busybox location.
The Problem
I installed Root Explorer today and I am successfuly able to change from R/O to R/W and back on the root directory and on the SDCard. But when I go to the System directory I cannot change from R/O to R/W.
Tryed to connect to the Inc2 from my PC (winXP) via ADB. ADB Devices command shows my device. When in ADB Shell the default profile is $. When I type in SU I get back the message "SU: permission denied" I do not get a prompt from Superuser on the phone to give access.
(To see if the problem was in the steps I was doing I tried this on my rooted Incredible 1 and in Root Explorer I was successfully able to remount the System directory from R/O to R/W and back. But the same problem with ADB I have on both Inc1 and Inc2. (Inc1 was s-off/rooted with Unrevoked3/Unrevoked Forever, with su.2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip.)
I'm not sure what went wrong where, since some of the root access is working. Any suggestions? Help?
Thanks,
that happen to me before. and the only way to change the r/o to r/w is going back to stock,if you have a stock back up rom you have to run that one,and then you can install the rom you want, and the you can change with root explorer s/o to r/w.if you dont have a stock back up you have to install the PG32IMG,and then you have to go to revolutionary and install the recovery.dont forget to turn off the fast boot.if you dont know how to do that, setting, power, and then uncheck the fast boot to off.
I dont think your binaries are up to date.
Try installing SuperUser 3.0 and report back - with updated binaries. The binaries should show at least verison 3.
I had issues to with the Root access that came with revolutionary and this worked for me.
You are on the right path though.
I'd like to try and avoid flashing the original Verizon ROM back on the phone. I'll leave that for last resort. There is stuff that I've done to the phone that I would rather not have to go through to do again.
In Superuser I tap on the 'check for binary updates', the respone after checking is that the 'su is up to date'. The version that I'm currently using su.2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip the files are modified in 2008 and 2011. So it seems to be upto date.
Is there a place I can download the latest version of Superuser 3.0?
The version of Superuser3.0 that I was able to find, when I open the zip file, shows all the files last modifed in 2008.
You wont have to flash back.
Follow my advice and install the new SuperUser on the market. It is 3.0.
Once in the application go to update binaries and update anyway.
Reboot and let us know how it works.
Those 2.3.6.3 binaries didnt work for me either. Now im fine after following my own advice.
Oh - and also - check to make sure that you have allowed specific permission for the application you are having issues with - within SuperUser.
You will be pleased to see that the new SuperUser can automatically grant Root to all of your apps...dangerous, but speeds things up.
@tinkbtrar. Thanks!
Ugrading to the latest Superuser 3.0 and updating the binaries did help! Still some problems, but making progress.
I can connect via adb shell and get SU privileges. # shows up! I think I now have r/w privilege on /system. Not sure, but I think I do. (I'm still learning adb shell and linux commands)
But I still cannot get Root Explorer on the phone to work properly. Same problem as before. I can get r/o and r/w on the root directory, but cannot get r/w on the System directory. The button turns green, but the nothing changes.
I can live with getting SU privileges in adb shell, but it would really be nice to get r/w on System in RootExplorer.

Be sure to click thanks if you haven't already. Lol.
Try wiping data...force closing and uninstalling root explorer (thru manage applications...not CWR).
Should take care of it. And because you are rooted you should have full access to filesystem via adb already.

try mount -t ext3 -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system with adb. thatll remount /system as readwrite

@tincbtrar, gave you the thumps-up!
No go with Root Explorer yet.
I wiped data from CWM, uninstalled, and reinstalled Root Explorer, but still could not get r/w on the System directory using Rootexplorer.
Anyone, any ideas/suggestions?

You paid for Root Explorer. It doesn't work for you. I'd be bugging the developer since it's clearly not doing the job.
@android-incredible
yes, i looking more and more like i may have to flash my rom backup that i made right after s-off. let's see, since i can get su in adb shell i can get done what i need to so reflashing is not utmost urgent.
i'm not sure it's rootexplorer since i've not seen other posts with similar issue. if the flash of the rom backup does not do it, that may then point to rootexplorer. lets see...

Trouble With Secure Settings

Just rooted and the whole purpose was to install secure settings with superuser permissions so I can toggle GPS using tasker.
I have granted it superuser permissions but in the secure settings app the 'helper' file needed for GPS toggle wont install
The error whilst installing it is: Unable to mount partition rw
I then tried to go into CWM in recovery mode and select the zip file manually, but that failed also, Im stuck! any ideas?

[Q] How to put a ROM on read-only /sdcard, while adb shell not working

I've been searching my _ off for two days now to find a solution for my problem, but I can't find one working for me.
What I do have right now:
NO working ROM (I believe because of a failed atempt to revert to a backup in CWM)
Access to my bootloader (unlocked through HTCDev)
Access to my recovery (Which is the latest CWM)
Fastboot/adb working
Phone boots upon the HTC logo screen
NO ROM zipfile on the SD-Card (I accidentilly deleted that, I still hate myself for that)
I've managed to push to ROM file into both /data and /system, which (ofcourse) isn't usefull to flash from because they don't show up in CWM.
What I've tried:
Reverting to a Nandroid backup, I've 2 on the sdcard. Both don't pass the part where /system is being restored.
'asd shell' to push files, or mount the SD card, does not work. First I had the error saying '--exec /system/bin/sh failure: file or dir not found (2)'. I managed to push the sh file into system, (and I believe into /system/bin), and the error changed to '[...] No directory (20)'
asd push /sdcard/; doesn't work because /sdcard is read-only.
In CWM I can't mount as USB storage, is says something about a file which can't be found.
TWRP recovery doesn't work on my device, I can touch whatever I wan't, the only button responding is the power button, which causes a locked recovery, which I can't unlock. (You need to swipe for that, which my phone seems to ignore).
I've read almost every topic on XDA and whatever Google could give me, but most solutions somewhere relied on the asd shell, or pushing into the /sdcard, or simply assume I still can mount as USB storage.
Does anyone have any suggestions left on howto get a ROM into the /sdcard so I can flash it? I would be thanking you forever!
Thanks in advance!
No ADB shell, then adb push *filename* /sdcard?
Maybe sideload a ROM?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I can't push files to the /sdcard since it's an read-only directory.
I tried the sideload part, but instead of executing something, it shows me the help of adb.
Any clue how to fix my shell, or get a ROM on it?
Tried typing 'adb remount' a few times and trying again?
Also, you should update your CWM to latest version so you can mount sdcard

I tried using remount, but that is to remount the /system partition right? I can put the ZIP on the /system partition. But CWM can't install from there.
I'm using the last version of CWM, but it gives me an error about a file not being found, so I can't mound as USB Storage device.
I returned the phone, to the store. I pretty much gave up after another few hours of struggling.

[Guide] AdAway for systemless hosts file

About the only reason I root my phone is to install AdAway. I'd prefer to not modify the system partition to help make OTA's easier to get and to allow Android Pay to work. AdAway has a flashable .zip file that preps the hosts file to use the systemless root structure that comes along with SuperSU. Unfortunately, that script depends on being able to access the /data partition inside of TWRP which isn't going to happen any time soon on the HTC 10. Fortunately, it is easy for us to manually replicate what the flashable .zip is trying to do.
This isn't a detailed how-to, but more of a set of guidelines. Don't blame me if your phone explodes.
Root the phone with the latest SuperSU.
Download the AdAway_systemless_hosts_v2.zip file from the Unofficial AdAway thread.
Extract the files from inside the zip. We are only interested in two files in the support folder.
Connect the phone to your PC and turn on file transfer mode.
Copy "hosts" and "0000adaway.script" that you just extracted to the internal storage of your phone.
Use a program file Root Explorer to move "hosts" into /su/etc and move "0000adaway.script" into /su/su.d (this probably could have been done with ADB push, but I got permission errors when I tried it that way and I'm impatient and lazy).
Chmod 0755 /su/su.d/0000adaway.script (I used a root shell on the phone via ADB)
Install AdAway (I used the link in the Unofficial AdAway thread.)
Reboot the phone.
Run AdAway like normal. By default it should use /system/etc/hosts which is what you want.
If something doesn't work, figure out why and fix it. I'm happy to answer questions to the best of my ability.
AdAway works without problems here, with simple press activate button.

Yes, but it modifies the /system partition unless you do the trick in OP. If I'm correct, you will have problems with OTA updates and Google Pay if you let AdAway directly modify the hosts file on /system.
Now that TWRP can access /data, can we just flash the zip?

Yes, you can. I downloaded that zip and apk from the Unofficial AdAway thread linked above. Booted into TWRP, flashed the newest betaSuperSU2.74-2-forceencrypt (not related to this, just so I'd be on the latest version), then the AdAway_systemless_hosts_v2.zip, rebooted and installed the apk and let it run. Rebooted. Showing hosts location as /system32/etc/hosts as the OP says is a good thing, and both files mentioned are in their correct places per Root Browser. [emoji106]

Sorry that it doesn't completely match the thread here but I think my question could fit in here anyway.
Do I suggest correctly that with systemless root, systemless AdAway and the stock recovery OTAs should be fully usable? Since there's no other modification to /system then.

I believe that is correct. There hasn't been a new OTA for my phone yet so I can't verify. However, when I do the check for new software it tells me no new updates (as opposed to the message about the files system being corrupt). I believe Android Pay should also work. I have it installed and added a new card, but I haven't tested making a purchase yet.
Thanks for the guide.
My device is rooted, but I didn't found su folder in anywhere when I use Root Explorer with root access, does anyone tell me how to get su folder and make AdAway work?

Your device may use su, & still not have an su folder (at all) that is used for hosts file (ie systemless root). Just do this..
Download... Terminal emulator.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm
Open terminal
Then enter these commands.. "Quote"
su
mount -orw,remount /system
rm /system/etc/hosts
ln -s /data/data/hosts /system/etc/hosts
mount -orw,remount /system
Now open AdAway go to preferences and select option to " Target hosts file"
Select /data/data/hosts
Enjoy..
If you still have ads in apps do this!!!

Open the 3 dot menu in adaway, chose log DNS request. Enable TCP dump.
Open the app with ads, when ad loads, go back to adaway, and open log.
Long press any entries and chose black list.
Profit

Unable to change permissions of /system on LOS14.1

Hello, I am using the unofficial Lineage OS 7.1.2, with SuperSU 2.82 and a 3.1.1 TWRP & .160 FW
I'm trying to add some files like sony SoundEnhancement, some lib's files, Walkman, build.prop and stuff from Sony to /system
But I always encounter a problem like "system is read-only" or "you don't have permissions blaaah"
I tried at least 2 days with ADB (haven't tried ADB Sideload yet)
Or the app Mount / System RO/RW from play store
I also tried with Root Browser to change the file but no success
If someone would take some time to explain to me even if I've browse a lot of website I still don't understand why it doesn't work -.-
Thanks in advance

Use terminal app.
write down below commands
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
Now u can change permissions.
You have to use this command after every reboot if u r going to play with system.

Hello, i tried and it failed
I don't have my phone now but I'll try again, thanx for your time
Tried this command on the android command prompt, continuously gives me message that the /system is being used by another resources.
Is there a way to add this statement in some sort of init.d component? Can anyone provide the location of this script file?
